Crane Wives’ music about more than performing
G
rand Rapids Americana band The Crane Wives are known for the emotion and the energy brought to the listener in both their live show and in their recordings. As Emilee Petersmark and Kate Pillsbury, the original duo who formed the group, told me after their show at The Livery, their pursuit is not simply about music, but about family and lifestyle. Emilee and Kate met as students at Grand Valley State University. Though both were solo musicians and ran in similar crowds, it was in the financially tough years following college that the two really bonded. Both worked for the same Chinese restaurant in the area, a job experience they each described as terrible. It was in the difficulty of that job that they connected and embarked on making music together. “We worked there together and in our shared misery, we became much closer than we had been,” Kate said. Writing together in their free time from work, they started to create a catalog of songs. They quickly discovered that the normally painful process of collaborative songwriting was easy when working together. They would finish a number of songs they had each started previously on their own and take their music to a live audience as The Crane Wives. “Our boss found out that we played music,” Kate said. “And we encouraged her to let us play music on Friday nights.” Though their initial

Justin Flagel reception was not positive, the union of their individual skills in lyricism would prove fruitful. Both Kate and Emilee relayed tales of writing songs as early as childhood. Emilee recalled diving into songwriting during her middle school years. Kate, whose father was a songwriter, has handwritten lyrics going back as early as age six. Together, they wove together emotional lyrics and tales that individuals of any background could connect with. As the band grew in size, the music evolved beyond the Americana sound, urging the listener to sing, foot stomp and dance. The band would eventually grow to a five-piece. Dan Rickabus and Tom Gunnels, both known from the Grand Valley campus and the local music community, joined the family as a way of uniting their various musical projects. Ben Zito found his way into the band after acting as their sound engineer for a number of shows and playing bass while helping them create an album.
Riverpointe Auction Service, LLC 574-876-9641 • INAU10800054 Gunnels would leave the band in 2015, pushing the remaining members to stretch their musical skills to complete The Crane Wives sound. The unification of the four members of the band goes beyond that of musical collaboration. Together, they have set out to pursue not only music, but a particular lifestyle, treating their creativity as a career and their band as a family. “Being in a band, we always equate it to being married,” Emilee said. “It’s such a very delicate chemistry.” “Our lives are dependent on each other,” Kate said. “Whenever someone takes a weekend off, we all take a weekend off. We carefully architect our lives around each other.” The members regularly “check in” with each other, making sure the entire band is satisfied both with their creative progress and with the lifestyle that has come out of existing in a full-time band. They have put a deliberate focus on longevity, as opposed to

more lofty goals of stardom. They recalled their experience at Folk Alliance International in 2015, in which they met with people in the music industry who highlighted the more practical aspects of life as a musician. “They want numbers,” Kate said. “How many fans do you want to draw to a show? How many shows do you want to do in a year? How much money do you want to make at a show?” “Making it means something different when you realize this is a job,” Emilee said. “I want to be able to do this every day and live financially secure.” Justin Flagel is the founder of the web magazine and podcast Anywhere the Needle Drops, where he and others showcase their interest in music, pop culture, creativity and life. Round Barn gets ‘All Shook Up’
Amish Acres theater invites guests to shake, rattle and roll
N
APPANEE, Ind. — Elvis Presley’s hits roar to life on The Round Barn Theatre Stage in the American Jukebox Musical “All Shook Up.” It is sure to have audiences dancin’ in the aisles and jumpin’ out of their blue suede shoes. This mad-cap musical comedy based on William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and told through the songs of Elvis Presley, overflows with rock ‘n roll, gospel, romance and mistaken identities. “All Shook Up” tells the story of a small town girl with big dreams and the guitar-playing roustabout who brings romance, rebellion and rock ‘n’ roll into her life. Among the many hits that will have you jumping out of your blue suede shoes are, “Love Me Tender,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” and of course “All Shook Up.” Will true love prevail? Will the power of music win the day? Will this small town survive getting all shook up? The musical premiered on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on in 2005, where it ran for 213 performances before closing in September of the same year. This vibrant and enchanting musical will be directed and choreographed by Mike Fielder who is making his directorial debut at Amish Acres. Julie Lyn Barber returns to The Round Barn Theatre for the first time since 1997 to music direct the complex score.
“All Shook Up” stars returning alumni Carl Glenn as Chad, and South Bend native Abby Murray Vachon as Natalie. Carl was most recently seen on the Joseph Stein Stage as Sparky in this season’s “Forever Plaid,” and Abby is currently wowing audiences with her unique portrayal of Hilda Miller in the 30th Anniversary production of “Plain and Fancy.” Joining them in the “Jailhouse” will be returning alumni Rory Dunn, Don Hart and Katie Post. “All Shook Up” opens on Tuesday, June 7, and continues through Sunday, July 17, with 2 p.m. matinees and 8 p.m. evening performances. A complete show schedule, ticket availability, and reservations can be found by calling the Box Office at (800) 800-4942 extension 2 or online at AmishAcres.com. Theatre tickets can be combined with Amish Acres famous family style Threshers Dinner or a oneof-a-kind Theme Dinner served on Friday, June 10 only. Theme Dinner seating is limited and reservations must be made in advance with The Round Barn Theatre box office. Following “All Shook Up” and running in repertory with the 30th anniversary of “Plain and Fancy” will be “Crazy for You” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” Fall Harvest Days will bring the Tony Award winning drama, The Miracle Worker to the Joseph Stein Stage, and for the Holidays, everyone’s favorite “festive” indulgence, “A

8 WAYS TO
WASTE
YOUR ADVERTISING One and Done
1
Advertising works best when scheduled with frequency. An advertiser who runs one ad and waits for results is wasting money.
2
All successful advertising need to make a point. If the reader has to work to determine what the point is the ad is wasted.
3
Some advertisers feel every inch of an ad must be used, such as 75 things on sale in a two inch ad. It works best to make a simple single point.

7
Advertisers who constantly change the look and styles of their ads lose the residual cumulative benefit of the ad schedule.

FOCUS
Lest We Forget pays tribute to WWII, Korea and Vietnam battles B ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The annual Lest We Forget weekend in St. Joseph-Benton Harbor is June 23-26, honoring veterans and paying tribute to those who gave their lives keeping the country safe and preserving the nation’s freedom. The re-enactors will be arriving Thursday and Friday and the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport will be transformed into a battlefield as re-enactors from all over the country recreate famous WWII and Vietnam battles. On Thursday evening there will be a presentation by the Vietnam War Dog handlers at Peace Lutheran Church in St Joseph. There will be dog handlers from all over the country attending this event. Some of them will be bringing animals they have trained to duplicate what their dogs did in saving their lives in combat. There were more than 4,000 war dogs in Vietnam and it is estimated that they saved over 10,000 American soldiers. On Friday evening at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport in Benton Harbor there will be presentations by Nick Koulchar and decorated VN pilot Charles Kettles. In 2008 Nick was in a vehicle in Iraq when it was hit by an explosive. He lost both legs and spent 2.5 years in re-hab at Walter Reed Hospital. Despite this, he is in training for the U.S. Para-Olympic games and he completed the Boston Marathon this past April in his wheelchair. Come and hear his inspiring story. Charles Kettles was the commander of a helicopter unit that was tasked with rescuing an Army unit that was surrounded and being overrun. In spite of heavy gun fire from the enemy he made repeated trips into the area. The final airlift was accomplished despite orders that came from above telling him not to risk it with an extremely overloaded chopper. WWII landing crafts — i.e. “Ducks” and “Gators” — will be giving rides on Thursday and Friday on the St
Joseph river at the Benton Harbor DNR boat launch on Riverview Drive and at the Viewing Park in downtown South Bend. These rides will be from 10 to 4 p.m. One of the Gators belonging to Tom Price of Bowling Green, Ohio appeared in the Mel Gibson’s movie, “Flags of Our Fathers” with Tom at the helm. This is the first time that landing crafts rides have been available in South Bend. Guests can watch re-enactors from all over the country recreate battle scenes from famous WWII and Vietnam battles at the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport in Benton Harbor. To start the program on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. there will be a WWII “beach landing” with WWII landing craft at the airport. This will be followed by an American and Korean flag drop featuring heavy equipment such as tanks, two flame throwers, and various American and German heavy equipment. On Friday the Michigan Vietnam Wall, paying tribute to more than 2,500 Michigan soldiers killed in the war, will have a motorcycle and police escort to the airport. Motorcycle riders are invited to participate in this welcome ride which will meet at DiMaggio’s restaurant (located at the intersection of M63 and I-196). Cyclists

must be at DiMaggio’s by 1 p.m. to register. During the weekend, examine authentic aircraft, combat vehicles and historic artifacts related to various conflicts at the airport. Guests can hear moving presentations by WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans and Medal of Honor recipients. A Chow Hall run by the Watervliet EAA serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to reactors and visitors Saturday and Sunday. Saturday afternoon there will be a presentation by Dr. Brian Dykstra of Kalamazoo on the current medical evacuation of injured soldiers. Colonel Dykstra is a trauma surgeon who has participated in hundreds of medical evacuations from Iraq and Afghanistan to Germany or Walter Reed. He will bring several medical associates who will present a very informative briefing on the medical evacuation treatment of soldiers. Saturday evening at 6 pm there will be a 1940-1960s Fashion Show put on by the Berrien County Blue Star Mothers. Following the Fashion Show will be sentimental sounds of music as vocalist Jeff Whittaker from Niles sings hits from the greats including Elvis, Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The Hangar Dance featuring the “Moonlighters” follows from 8-10 p.m. Join us for Field Church on 9 a.m. Sunday morning in the hangar then listen to presentations by Charles Kettles, Jerry Lindquist-Master Modeler, 20th Century at War and the War Dogs. This will be followed by WWII and VN battles on the airfield. Throughout the event rides will be available on the Huey Medevac chopper and a civilian helicopter. Fee is required. For a schedule of the weekend’s events, visit www. lestweforgetusa.org. Because of generous sponsors there is no admission charge. However donations are welcome. For questions call (269) 921-7176.

'American Pickers' to film in Michigan
M
ike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team say they are excited to return to Michigan. They plan to film episodes of the hit series “American Pickers” throughout Michigan with filming scheduled for this month. “American Pickers” is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique “picking” on History. The hit show follows Mike Wolfe and Fritz, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques — from motorcycles, classic cars and bicycles, to one-of-a-kind vintage memorabilia. As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank continue their mission to recycle America by rescuing forgotten relics and giving them a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about American history along the way. “American Pickers” is looking for leads and would love to explore your buried treasure. They are on the hunt for characters with interesting and unique items. Some of what they look for: vintage bicycles, toys, unusual radios, movie memorabilia, advertising, military items, folk art, early firefighting equipment, vintage musical equipment, automotive items and clothing. They are always excited to find things they’ve never seen before and learn the story behind it. Anyone who knows a collector with a large, private collection is encouraged to send “American Pickers” their name, phone number, location and description of the collection with photos to americanpickers@cineflix.com or call 855-old-rust.
