Local man hosts fundraiser for troops, veterans

ARODA, Mich. — When Carle Post tried to join the military, his father, who served in the Navy for more than 38 years, said no.

Post’s father had enlisted with eight other men from Bridgman, and he was the only one who returned. Years later, Post’s two brothers were both killed as well.

Carle was the only one left, and his father did not want to lose another son.

“I grew up in an atmosphere that loved the military and service people,” Carle said. “And I kept feeling terrible about not being able to join. So I thought, ‘What can I do to pay back to our veterans?’”

Carle wanted people to come

to an event, have a good time, hear music, eat food and see fireworks — all while raising money for nonprofits to help soldiers and veterans with special needs.

So, he did.

In 2010, the Support Our Troops Festival was born in Baroda.

“This year will be our fifth annual,” Carle said.

“I’m very proud to say that.”

The festival, which drew around 6,000 people last year, will be held at the Baroda American Legion and will feature a day packed with events — most covered by the $10 admission.

The day starts at 7 a.m. and will feature a car show, vendor booths, a

motorcycle run, helicopter rides, a children’s play area and a parade — and that’s just before 1 p.m.

The afternoon will begin with

a POW/MIA ceremony put on by the Notre Dame ROTC and will continue with dog shows, tribute artists, a dance and a seven-gun raffle. The night will conclude with a fireworks show starting at 10:30 p.m.

Through all the festivities, last year the festival raised more than $29,000 for charities that include Rolling Thunder, Lest We Forget, Blue Star Mothers, Paws with a Cause, Culver Military Academy’s Supporting Our Troops Program and more.

Carle said he hopes that number will grow this year.

“If more people come, then we’ll be able to give more,” he said. “We are all 100 percent volunteers. We have no

paycheck of any kind — not even for gas reimbursement.”

Of the more than 200 volunteers, Post said that a great majority are veterans.

“Everybody enjoys helping our veterans and our soldiers,” he said.

The Support Our Troops Festival will be from 7 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25 Admission is $10 for adults and $25 for families that show up all at once. The Baroda American Legion is located at 9214 First Street in Baroda.

The ‘Lake Effect’ Local jazz musicians, teachers form band

ichiana — Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Pat Metheny… These are just some of the great musicians that have helped to give life to jazz music from the tunes of the 1930s all the way through the popular hits of today.

That, according to former St. Joseph Public Schools Orchestra Director Steven L. Reed, is why Lake Effect Jazz Big Band will be playing the music of those composers this summer — to help continue to give life to jazz and preserve it as a true American art form.

Reed is the current

director of Lake Effect, a local jazz big band comprised of 13 current and former music educators and nine community members who all share the same love for jazz music.

Reed said members of Lake Effect have shared their love of jazz music with the southwestern Michigan community for 15 years.

“We’re a group of local musicians that got together and stayed together with the idea to preserve the American art form of big band jazz,” he said.

With half music educators and half community members (including Whirlpool engineers, business owners and car dealers), Reed said that Lake Effect is very unique.

“You have everybody

from the adults who used to play their instrument in high school to those who either have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in music,” he said. “Even though we have a wide range of performance abilities, everybody loves the idea of getting together and performing live music.”

Reed, a trumpet player with a degree in music education from Western Michigan University, not only directs the group, but will also occasionally play with them.

“There are opportunities for solos in jazz music,” he said. “But I like to feature the members of the band as much as I can.”

Lake Effect performs mainly throughout the summer to fit the sched-

ules of the current music educators in the group.

Their next performance is 7 p.m. July 16, at the Lincoln Township Library.

They will then travel to South Haven and perform at South Haven Riverfront Park 7 p.m. July 30, before one of their biggest events, performing at the John E. N. Howard Band Shell in St. Joseph for the St. Joseph Friday Night Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. July 31.

“We play the [St. Joseph] concert series every summer,” Reed said.

“When we play there on a Friday night, it’s one of our biggest crowds.”

Reed said that there are some difficulties with playing outdoors as opposed to a concert hall due to the acoustics of the

stage and how the sound projects. Despite that, he says, they still love to do the event because of how much fun they and everyone in attendance has while they perform.

“My preference from a sound standpoint is indoors,” he said. “But from a crowd standpoint, we play outside.”

Lake Effect will be joined by guest vocalist Katie Rohwer for their July 30 and July 31 perfor-

mances. Rohwer is the choir director for Lakeshore Public Schools.

“Our mission is to promote the art of jazz through performance, education and community outreach,” Reed said. “We try to mix repertoire from the big band era through modern music written today.”

ew Buffalo, Mich. — The Art Loft Studio of New Buffalo will present the Third Annual Quilt and Watercolor Show on Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19. The exhibit can be viewed both days from 1 to 4 p.m.

The public is invited to enjoy the colorful fabric quilts of Ruby Yoder Campos. Her work is presented in a number of different formats. Campos is an experienced quilter from Oak Park, Illinois.

The watercolors of Dave Knoebber are designed to remind guests of floral gardens and landscapes of the area. His work is created on various types of water-

color paper. He is a local watercolorist and host of the “Harbor Country Arts Scene” on WRHC 106.7 FM. A special reception is planned for Saturday evening, July 18. The show will run from 6 to 8 p.m. central time. Visitors will be served refreshments at colorful exhibit and have the opportunity to walk through the gardens of the Art Loft Studio. Those interested may also meet the artists and acquire a new knowledge of quilts and watercolors.

Meatless summer side dishes

T

his 4th of July, for the second year in a row, I hosted a pool party with a few friends at a downtown Chicago roof pool.

Of course I can’t just show up with a six-pack of beer. I pack a full fledged picnic party including a cooler filled with a variety of salads, snacks and libations.

I find broccoli and potato salads are perfect for pool and beach picnics because they don’t wilt after hours of being lugged around and they’re filling without bloating. Potato salads are sort of a summer staple here in the midwest, so I want to highlight this fun new twist I came up with this year.

My plan was to make a variation of my jalapeno potato salad to include some watercress, but I ran out of vegan mayonnaise as I was making it, so I was forced to improvise and come up with a new recipe.

At the party a couple of my friends commented on how they loved the potato salad best of all because it wasn’t creamy. They

Lighter & Summery Potato Salad 1 pound bag small red skin boiling potatoes, cooked until just tender 1 ½ cups chickpeas cooked in vegetable stock (or 1 16 ounce can rinsed) 1 bunch watercress, chopped ¼ cup nutritional yeast ¼ cup fresh parsley, minced 2 tablespoons minced shallot 2 tablespoons hulled hemp seeds 2 teaspoons minced fresh hot pepper (or to taste. I used 2 very hot local peppers) 1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 ½-2 teaspoons white wine vinegar ¾ - 1 teaspoon sea salt (½ teaspoon Himalayan salt) Cook potatoes in a roaring boil for about 5-7 minutes or until just tender but not too soft. Run under cool water and let cool while you prep the rest of the veggies.

Cut cooled potatoes into ½ inch cubes and toss with remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Adjust seasoning to taste, but try to let sit overnight in the fridge and stir again before serving. It’s best if the flavors have a chance to set in a bit.

COOK’S NOTE: Watercress does wilt so this salad will really only keep for 2 or 3 days after served.

She is currently an instructor for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco part-time, teaching production design for the Motion Picture and Television Department, and she owns her own interior design business.

McClellan is also writing a book for Submitted Photo Focal Press on production design, with Art by local artist Pam Kirkham of Bridgman. publication tentatively set for May 2016.

She maintains membership and many friendships in the film business today, and lives in Marina del Rey, California.

Pam Kirkham Kirkham (Fight or Flight) graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids in 1976 as an illustrator.

From a class that originally numbered 150 students, Kirkham was one of 12 worthy of graduating as illustrators.

Hired over the phone in 1980, she moved to Galveston, Texas, where she worked for the University of Texas Medical Branch as an artist.

Kirkham moved back to southwest Michigan in 2004 where many local businesses display her murals, including Pike Funeral Home and Dairy Queen on Niles Ave. in St. Joseph, as well as private homes in the area. She was commissioned to paint public art for downtown St. Joseph by the Krasl Art Center and Lest We Forget, among others. She teaches at the Box Factory for the Arts and Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Celebrate summer on the island Festival returns to Mishawaka July 22

I S H A WA K A , Ind. — Next w e e k e n d , Mishawaka’s Kamm Island will once again come to life as the annual Kamm island Festival returns.

This 21-and-over signature summer event will run from 5 to 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 22.

The festival will feature live music from the Sandbar Bums, the Caledonia Kilty Pipe Band and headliners Blammo!

While guests enjoy the music, they will have the opportunity to stroll around the island and check out the vintage car show, art fair and motorcycle show.

While the timeline on phase layout isn’t specific, the first phase focuses on an improved alligator exhibit (with zip-line Alligator Adventure) and an endangeredspecies carousel, while phase two incorporates a children’s zoo and educational plaza. Phase three reveals the North America Experience, a new restaurant, and corporate picnic area.

“Future” phases consist of the bulk of blueprints and $26 million of planned cost with Asia and Africa, flamingo and penguin remodels, as well as a new administration building.

“A great city deserves a great zoo,” said South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

“I applaud every part of this project.”

In playful talk between Dean and Buttigieg of who will ride the first zip-line, Mayor Buttigieg added, “Ziplining over the alligator pits does sound pretty fun.”

OUTH BEND, Ind. — For many, zip-lining is enough to make stomachs drop and adrenaline rise. Add a dozen or so alligators underneath for effect, and you’ve got a thrill ride most would consider a distant adventure.

Soon enough, though, that experience won’t be so far away. In fact, tourists will soon be able to find such an adventure right in the heart of South Bend.

Gator zip-lining is just one anticipated attraction set for the city’s Potawatomi Zoo in its $37 million extreme makeover.

The master plan, which was released last week, illustrates a comprehensive 15to 20-year strategy to enhance guest experiences, improve the site and facilities, and strengthen the zoo’s stature in its educational mission.

“There will be so many opportunities to interact with animals,” said Marcy Dean, executive director of Potawatomi Zoo. “We expect these changes to really bring out the emotion of those who come to visit.”

Giraffes and penguins are slated newcomers to the wildlife roster and part of the feeding experience, and guests will also be able to feed the existing bison.

The plan is largely built around a crosscontinental theme. The North America Experience will introduce bears to Potawatomi Zoo — either grizzly or black — along with wolves and cougars.

The African Experience is considered a crucial economic driver for the zoo with goals to highlight the ever-popular lions, the new giraffes, and an improved view of the chimpanzee exhibit, to name a few.
