Chalk the Block returns to downtown St. Joseph
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Need a summer boredom buster for your family before the back-toschool crunch begins? St. Joseph is hosting its 20th Annual Chalk the Block Aug. 5-7. Sponsored by Cook Nuclear Plant-Indiana Michigan Power, this free event brings in regional artists who create chalk masterpieces downtown on Broad Street, between Lake Boulevard and State Street. A featured artist, sponsored by Southwestern Michigan College will be Nate Baranowski from Tampa, Florida. His chalk murals and street art have awed audiences from Illinois to Florida. Festivalgoers can watch Baranowski create an original work in a 7’x15’ block at the corner of Broad and State Street. To view his portfolio, visit natebaranowski.com. Various other professional chalk artists are coming in from across the country to participate in this event. Event goers can also vote for their favorite artist renderings in the People’s Choice vote. Tickets will be sold at the St. Joseph Today Welcome Center and the Chalk Tent on Broad Street for $1 each. One dollar equals one vote towards the favored artist, the artist with the most tickets by the end of the weekend wins the People’s Choice Award.
New this year for those interested in learning more about chalk art, a Chalk Artist Workshop will be hosted by The Box Factory from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 5. Behnke said this workshop is perfect for anyone ages 12 and up, “It’s a chance to try a new medium, refine skills and learning something new
from a chalk master.” The fee for the workshop is $35 and includes materials and admission into the Artist Welcome Reception later that evening. Chalk art isn’t the only sidewalk entertainment planned. City merchants will showcase sales merchandise outside and local
Joseph Today. “Not only can you see awesome chalk art around town, families can easily walk to Whirlpool Compass Fountain, jam to live music or catch a movie outdoors by Lake Michigan. Everything is free.” Behnke said this long weekend also offers a good opportunity to view the
city’s outdoor art exhibit “Beach Bugs” that showcases gigantic painted caterpillars, ladybugs, snails and bees along downtown streets. She added the St. Joseph riverfront, several Lake Michigan beaches and family friendly attractions are walking distance from the shops and restaurants.

S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Friday and Saturday evenings from July 22 to July 30, The Fischgrund Center for the Performing Arts will become the streets of London to present Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” South Bend Civic Theatre’s summer production at St. Joseph County Parks. Katie Kuehner stars as the practically perfect nanny opposite Pierre Cooks as Bert the chimney sweep, in this production sponsored by Merrill Lynch - Matt Kahn Associates. Mark AbramCopenhaver directs this production in collaboration with Music Director Roy Bronkema, Choreographer Callie Lorenz, and more than 35 actors. “Mary Poppins” is based on the stories by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film. On Broadway it delighted audiences for more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again.
“Mary Poppins” takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael are not the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.” Tickets for adults and children are $15 when purchased ahead of time. If you wait until you arrive at the park the night of the show, tickets are $25 for adults ($15 for kids). Your ticket purchase includes parking and admission to the show. Tickets can be reserved anytime at sbct. org or by contacting the box office from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Want to pre-order a chicken tenders dinner box to enjoy at the park before the show starts when you purchase your tickets in advance? A $25 ticket includes chicken tenders, a bag of chips, cookie and a bottled water, in addition to admission to the show and parking. Contact the box office with any questions. On performance nights at St. Patrick’s County Park, WakaDog (July 22/23), Fiddler’s Hearth (July 29/30) will have hot dogs and specialty hot dogs available. For both weekends, Olivet AME Church will have dessert options available and Fiddler’s Hearth will provide beer/ wine service. Photos by JOHN GILCHRIST PHOTOGRAPHY

Hot day, cool festival
Downtown hopping during Summer in the City weekend
D
Leader photos by TED YOAKUM & KELSEY HAMMON
OWAGIAC, Mich. — In spite of the heat wave that hit the area this weekend, many braved the hot and humid weather to enjoy the 31st annual Summer in the City festival, which took place Thursday through Sunday. More than 70 different businesses and organizations pitched tents along Front Street, from food vendors to candidates running for local office. In addition, the festival featured the debut of the first ever Summer on Tap craft beer tasting on Saturday, which even in the heat attracted many to the Beckwith Park Gazebo. Children were not left out in the cold, though, as there were several popular events lined up for them, including a petting zoo that featured alpacas, goats and even turtles.
