he Niles Burn Run will roll out this weekend with a variety of fun activities for the whole family, including its signature 50mile motorcycle ride through beautiful Southwest Michigan. Proceeds from the event go to the Great Lakes Burn Camp, a place where young burn victims can heal and have fun. In 12 years, the Burn Run has raised approximately $115,000. That is enough to send more than 191 children to the Jackson camp, which costs an average of $600 to attend.

By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com Construction on the second phase of the IndianaMichigan River Valley Trail may prove more challenging than the first for Niles Charter Township. However, township officials are also saying that portion of the trail has the chance to be the most beautiful because it would run through the lush Brandywine Creek Nature Park and over the creek. “It can be the crown jewel of Michigan,” said Harry Thibault, Niles Township park commission chairman, at Monday’s regular meeting of the township trustees. The I-M River Valley Trail is a multi-use recreational trail that, when finished, will connect the City of Niles with Mishawaka, Indiana, with 34 miles of

Contract extended for RESA superintendent SUBMITTED Berrien Springs, Michigan — During Berrien RESA’s Board of Education retreat, the Berrien RESA Board conducted their annual performance review of RESA Superintendent Dr. Kevin M. Ivers. The Board evaluated Dr. Ivers using a state directed format which reviewed his relationships with the Board, administrators, community, and staff, as well as his educational leadership and personal qualities. Dr. Ivers received “highly effective” designations in all areas measured. The positive review resulted in an extension of Dr. Ivers’ current contract by one year, allowing him to continue to serve the District through 2017. “It was the Board’s pleasure to extend his three-year contract,” said

to cost a little more than $600,000 with the City of Niles and Niles Township jointly responsible for paying approximately $178,000 of that, Thibault said. The rest would be covered by state grants. Terry Eull, township clerk, said the township needs to develop a plan quickly for phase two because grant applications are due by April 2015. “I don’t think we can wait,” he said. The township formed a committee to research op-

Supervisor Jim Stover said the challenging part would be keeping the trail grade at less than 5 percent (to comply with the American Disabilities Act) as it moves past the nature park and through or around the ALCOA property to the north. There is a large change in elevation in that area. The length of the trail for phase two is about one mile.
Also Monday, the township: • Announced that a bicycle and trail safety forum would be held at 7 p.m. July 16 and Aug. 6 at Niles Township Hall. Michigan State Police Trooper Rob Herbstreith will host it. Attendees will get to ride the trail after the presentation. • Extended open burning permits to be allowed until Aug. 7 as residents clean up from the recent storm damage. Cassopolis counselor on SMC Foundation board SUBMITTED Southwestern Michigan College’s Edward and Maria Jones Family Endowment, funded with a $2,500 gift at the “Acres of Diamonds” event at Chris and Susan Stoler’s Diamond Lake home June 21, is another way to affirm a faith in education forged in the cauldron of the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks was a family friend, as well as a neighbor in Montgomery, Alabama. She attended the Jones’ wedding 37 Augusts ago. “My husband and I believe in education. It changes people’s lives,” said Maria, who joined the Southwestern Michigan College Foundation board in May. “More than anything, we want to give kids at Ross Beatty High School the chance to go to college if tuition is going to be a hindrance. Having them stop at high school would break my heart. SMC, in my opinion, is a treasure for students here in this region. We want to help students go forward in the right direction by supporting their positive choices.” She has been a student support specialist with Cassopolis Public Schools for two decades at what is now Sam Adams Elementary School. “I was always eager to learn,” Maria said. “Even as a little girl, I was counseling the neighborhood.” The Cassopolis couple and their two sons all pursued coursework through SMC. Edward is the third-generation owner of Universal Casket Co. Their sons graduated from the University of

Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. The oldest has been on Capitol Hill for more than eight years, working for three members of Congress. The youngest, also in Washington, D.C., directs corporate partnerships for Special Olympics. Edward and Maria met at Western Michigan University. The inner-city Detroit native laughs recalling her phone call during orientation to tell her mother about life in Kalamazoo, the “smallest town in Michigan.” Little did Maria know that 34 years and counting awaited her in Cassopolis, which “I have definitely made my home.” Edward F. Jones founded Universal more than 60 years ago. He moved his family from Chicago to Cassopolis, centrally located 100 miles from it, Detroit and Indianapolis. He traveled to Cass County and bought bits of land until he accumulated five acres. In 1954, the business passed to Charles Jones. Ten years ago, in 2004, squeezed by consolidating competition, Universal carved a niche of assembling unique products to meet specialized needs for oversize caskets, infant caskets and inexpensive caskets for the indigent delivered within 24 to 48 hours. The Universal line is available through its web
site and Costco. Maria turned to SMC when she went back to college to finish her degree after a 13-year pause to raise her family. She made up for lost time, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in human services with a specialty in professional counseling. For Cassopolis, she typically identifies problems that interfere with student learning and achievement. Some issues are academic, some behavioral. Situations often call for prevention through classroom presentations, small support groups or meetings with individual students. Some classroom topics are stranger danger, bullying, tolerance and acceptance. Maria introduced the Positive Thought Process at the start of the 20122013 school year, with students reciting four phrases after pledging allegiance to the flag: I am smart, I am kind, I am important and I am here to learn. The first three are lines from the movie “The Help.” The last line was her personal reminder for the most important reason to come to school every day. “The more one says it and hears it, the more one believes the statements are true.” “My role models didn’t say, ‘Study psychology and become a counselor,’ “ Jones said, “but to take full
advantage” of hard-fought gains the civil rights movement won. “Going to school and doing well wasn’t a choice,” she said, “but a mandate from my father,” who volunteered his vehicle to bolster the Montgomery bus boycott, which began Dec. 1, 1955, in Montgomery when Parks refused to surrender her seat in the colored section to a white passenger. Jones said the soft-spoken seamstress always felt misquoted in retellings of her story because she wasn’t “tired” after a long day at work, but “fed up” with segregation. Parks, who lived her later years in Detroit, visited Dowagiac and Niles before she died Oct. 24, 2005, at 92. The Edward and Maria Jones Family Endowment is reserved for graduates of Cassopolis Ross Beatty Junior-Senior High School. It takes only $2,500 to create a perpetual scholarship endowment. Donations between $2,500 and $25,000 are matched 100 percent by the foundation, thereby doubling their effectiveness. SMC Foundation accepts contributions to existing scholarships in addition to establishing new scholarships. Woman was dead before hit by car STAFF REPORT
See Stars. Every WEEKEND.
Coming July 11th in the Friday Editions of The Niles Daily Star & The Dowagiac Daily News
The search is over for the driver of a vehicle police say struck a Berrien County woman Monday. A 29-year-old Mishawaka man turned himself in to police Tuesday, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police post in Niles. Preliminary autopsy results show the woman, Delaina Redade Tripp, 41, of Stevensville, was dead before the vehicle hit her. Police said David Allen Tripp, 56, of Stevensville, shot Delaine and then killed himself at around 6:13 a.m. Mon-
day in the 400 block of W. John Beers Rd., Stevensville. Delaine’s body was later hit by a vehicle. The driver left the scene. After hearing news reports that police were looking for the driver, the subject came forward and contacted the Lincoln Township Police Department. His vehicle was examined by police and the driver was interviewed. The driver is still being treated as a witness. Once a full investigation is complete, all reports will be forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review of any possible criminal charges.

ANSWER: A study reveals that as kids grow older, the nutrient content of their diets often decline. By following the eating patterns of children from third to eighth grade, researchers from the University of Minnesota found kids’ milk consumption dropped from 2.5 times a day in third grad to less that 1.9 times a day in eighth grade. At the same time, soft drink consumption more than tripled between the two grades,

Reviving some of your innovative ideas from the past will prove to be very lucrative. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- Share your thoughts with the people you most enjoy being around. A night out with friends or a quiet evening discussing plans with someone you love will be satisfying. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- Stand up to anyone putting demands on you. Backing down will make you frustrated and angry, and give whoever you are dealing with the go-ahead to continue treating you poorly. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Hard work brings results, but every once in a while you need to take a break and have some laughs. Make plans to do something fun with friends, family or a loved one. will improve your relationship and ensure that you will still be able to count on this person in the future. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- Be mindful of what you say in the workplace. Rumors and innuendos can damage your reputation. Even the most innocent remark can and will be used against you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -Consider joining a group or organization that could use your skills or services. You have a lot to contribute, and you will feel gratified by helping others. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- Don’t worry about what others think. Someone you work with may be jealous of your abilities, but don’t let that hold you back. Pursue your goals and your interests. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- It’s time for a change of scenery. Take a journey that will broaden your horizons, rejuvenate your spirit and revive your sense of adventure. A change is as good as a rest. ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- You will run out of steam if you don’t slow down. You need to pace yourself. Difficulties with an elderly relative or child will try your patience. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- Romance is in the air. Plan an intimate evening with the one you love, or, if you are single, get out and take part in events that are geared toward meeting people. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- Don’t flirt with disaster. Abide by the rules and regulations. If you hew to the straight and narrow, everything will be fine.

11 HALF CLASS
Continued from page 12 defensive players to the NFL Draft, the Cardinal still leads all teams with four players represented. Last season, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald both made history by becoming the first players from their schools to ever win the Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik Award, respectively. McCarron was drafted in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Bengals, while Aaron Donald was taken No. 13 overall by the St. Louis Rams, where he will join one of the NFL’s elite defensive lines. Also on the list are Michigan tight end Devin Funchess, Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson and Michigan State running back Jeremy Langford.

U-M, MSU, Irish players on watch list SUBMITTED A pair of quarterbacks from the state of Michigan lead the preseason Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik Award watch lists. Michigan State’s Connor Cook and Michigan’s Devin Gardner are among those named to the watch list for the 78th annual award, which goes to the College Playear of the Year. The Bednarik Award, which is in its 20th year, goes to the defensive player of the year. The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, has been given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell’s contributions to the game of football were extensive, including as a player, a sportswriter and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of ‘69 and the NFL Hall of Fame’s Class of 1967. Returning Maxwell Award semifinalists from 2013 include Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and returning Maxwell Award finalist Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. The Seminoles have placed three players on the list, as running back Karlos Williams and wide receiver Rashad Greene join Winston. Three athletes also represent Baylor, Oregon, and USC, but Alabama leads the pack with four. The Chuck Bednarik Award watch list features three of last season’s semifinalists, Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley, Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and USC defensive end Leonard Williams. Georgia landed three linebackers on the list: Leonard Floyd, Jordan Jenkins, and Ramik Wilson. And despite Stanford losing four of its best See LISTS, page 11

Money is not the object for MHSAA

ristling from criticism that our associations are money-grabbing exploiters of children, my counterpart from Colorado said, “If we were running our programs just to make money, we would do very many things very differently.” I knew exactly what he meant. Because we care about the health and welfare of students, because we mean what we say that the athletic program needs to maximize the ways it enhances the school experience while minimizing academic conflicts, and because we try to model our claim that no sport is a minor sport when it comes to its potential to teach young people life lessons, we operate our programs in ways that make promoters, marketers and business entrepreneurs laugh, cry or cringe. If money were the only object, we would seed teams and select sites to assure the teams that attracted the most spectators had the best
The Dowagiac Conservation Club will hold a hunter safety class July 17-19. Registration for the class will be today from 6 to 7 p.m. at t h e C o n s e r va t i o n Club, located two miles north of Dowagiac on M-51. You must have a birth certificate with you at the time of registration and must attend all three classes to receive a Hunter Safety Card. Classes are from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 17 and July 18 and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on July 19.
chance to advance in our tournaments, regardless of the travel for any team or its fan base. If money were the only object, we would never schedule two tournaments to overlap and compete for public attention, much less tolerate three or four overlapping events. If money were the only object, we would allow signage like NASCAR events and promotions Jack Roberts like minor league baseMHSAA Perspective ball games. Those approaches to event sponsorship are not wrong; they’re just not right for us. And we will live with the consequences of our belief system. During the 2012-13 school year, 438 of the MHSAA’s 2,097 district, regional and final
tournaments lost money. Not a single site in golf, skiing or tennis made a single penny. Over 17 percent of all other sites brought in less revenue than the direct expenses incurred at the site. In no sport did every district, regional and final site have revenue in excess of direct expenses. In fact, in only three sports – boys and girls basketball and football – is revenue so much greater than direct expenses overall that it helps to pay for all the other tournaments in which the MHSAA invests. That’s right: invests. When we present our budget to our board, we talk about the MHSAA’s investment in providing tournament opportunities in all those sports and all those places that cannot sustain the cost of those events on their own. John “Jack” Roberts is executive director of the MHSAA.
