Summer sounds take over Lake Michigan Concert series continues through September in St. Joseph

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Music has returned to Lake Michigan.

The St. Joseph Summer Concert Series officially kicked off on June 24.

Every Wednesday and Friday through Sept. 4, a different musical group will be performing in the John E. N. Howard Bandshell, overlooking both the St. Joseph River and Lake Michigan.

“The bandshell has both bench and lawn seating,” said event organizer Jill Stone, executive director of St. Joseph Today. “So it’s an awesome place for all ages to experience the joy of listening to live music.”

All performances are free and open to the public.

“The concerts are within walking distance of beaches, shopping and more family entertainment,” Stone said. “They’re the perfect way to interlude to your work or vacation day.”

Next scheduled to perform is Lee Murdock, a folk singer-songwriter who has a unique topic around which he themes his songs.

“In my general research for material, I came across songs about the Great Lakes,” Murdock said.

That was more than 30 years ago, and Murdock has been in love with the lakes ever since.

“I, like many people, did not really know the role that the Great Lakes played in the development of America,” he said. “Through music, I am able to make people aware of the Great Lakes heritage.”

Murdock said that he believes folk music is the best medium to inform people of the cultural history and significance of the Great Lakes.

“Regardless of who sang the song, who recorded the song, or who promoted the song, with folk music, it’s the song itself and that personal interaction with people that I think really brings history to life and makes a connection with a past that is more of an emotional than an intellectual connection,” the musician said.

Murdock, who will perform July 15, is a veteran of the St. Joseph Summer Concert Series. He said he is looking forward to playing for the community of southwest Michigan yet again.

“It’s a fabulous setting,” Murdock said. “It’s always attended very nicely, and people come just to have a nice lunch and spend a wonderful day.”

Murdock will be performing as part of the Wednesday Brown Bag Concerts, sponsored by St. Joseph’s Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches.

Those performances are from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through Sept. 2.

DNR tours offer unique look at Michigan

S

AWYER, Mich. — As the sun sets over Lake Michigan, Mike Latus holds court on the sand of Warren Dunes State Park. He is an animated one-man show, walking in circles around a small fire telling stories, talking about voyageurs and Indians, legends and myths, planets and ghosts, while a crowd of more than a hundred — mostly youngsters, but adults, too — listen, some amused, others enthralled.

To Latus, it is a typical weekend night, when the fireside story hour regularly draws a big crowd.

Several hours earlier, he led a group of 30 on a hike through the woods, pointing out medicinal plants or unusual trees, answering numerous questions. As soon as his fireside chat is finished, he is setting up telescopes for visitors to explore the night sky for his regular “Sky Watch” program.

Latus is an Explorer Guide, one of an army of Department of Natural Resources employees who educate and entertain visitors at 43 state parks in Michigan.

Latus, a high school math and science teacher the rest of the year, has enjoyed his summer job for 21 years. He’s considered a rock star by the other program members for his longevity, enthusiasm and ability to wow a crowd.

“This is my summer vacation. It’s my hobby, and I live close enough to the park that I’m out here every weekend, even during the winter,” he said.

“It’s teaching and being outdoors and connecting with people who are trying to connect to nature.”

Latus is aware of his status among Explore Guides.

“I think I’ve gotten a reputation because I just don’t quit,” he said. He puts on 11 scheduled presentations a week, but will rearrange his schedule for church, Scouts and school groups or whoever may be coming to the park but can’t make a scheduled event. He presents some programs regularly, others intermittently.

increasingly being regularly attended by local residents. The DNR has expanded outreach to local community centers and libraries to publicize the programs.

“That’s a huge component now of what we do,” Gourlay said.

To help meet demand, Explorer Guides sometimes make presentations at other nearby parks.

And some park supervisors send one of their summer workers to the training so they’ll know how to present occasional programs.

The DNR is always looking to expand outreach opportunities and will be hiring more guides next year. The job is perfect for educators or naturalists, but those are not requirements, Gourlay said.

“You can’t be afraid of bugs,” she said. “Or you can be, but you just can’t show it.”

“Certain programs are just made for Warren Dunes,” Latus said.

“You’ve got to do dune hikes; you’ve got to do beach hikes. And people have come to depend on the storytelling. We do Sky Watch every Friday and Saturday night and we always get a crowd for that.”

Explorer program coordinator Karen Gourlay says the Explorer Guides are “seasonal naturalists.”

“They work in state parks all over Michigan,” she said. “Their job is to connect the visitors to the resources available in the park. They create their own programs, market their own programs and present their own programs.

“They’re a very creative bunch of employees. I’m always excited

to see the programs they develop and their ability to get the visitors excited about natural resources and the parks.”

Many of the Explorer Guides are college students — often natural resources or education majors — who are working summer jobs as they explore potential careers, but they needn’t be.

“Mostly I’m looking for people who are enthusiastic and willing to learn and teach what they learn to others,” Gourlay said. “Having enthusiasm for outdoors is important.

The youngest person I’ve had working for me was fresh out of high school.

The oldest was 70 years old.”

Explorer Guides attend a weeklong training session at the beginning of the summer, where they learn about

the job and share experiences with each other. A full day is devoted to fishing, but employees also learn additional program-creating techniques.

“Hook, Line and Sinker is a huge part of the program,” Gourlay said. “They may know a lot about fishing, but they may not know how to teach fishing.”

Other than that, guides are free to develop their own programs.

“They’re individualized,” Gourlay said.

“They figure out the cool factor – what it is that brings people to those parks – and go with that.”

Always popular with state park visitors, the Explorer program is becoming even more of a draw. Originally designed to cater to park visitors, the programs are

Art on the bluff Krasl fair returns to St. Joseph

— What one would expect to find in a much larger city can be experienced this summer right in southwest Michigan.

The Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 11. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 12.

For more than 50 years, those behind the Krasl Art

Fair on the Bluff have made it their mission to bring people and fine art together.

Annually, the art fair draws upwards of 50,000 people, making it one of the most anticipated and best-attended events in the area.

OTRE DAME, Ind. — The 2015−2016 D e B a r t o l o Performing Arts Center Presenting Series season will present 41 performances in a variety of genres, ranging from rarely performed Renaissance choral music to world premieres of new music by living composers to audience favorites in dance and children’s literature-based musical theater.

The season features a total of six commissions, three of which will have their world premiere at the center, and three reconstructions never before seen as repertory in a single performance.

The six commissions are Seán Curran Company’s evening-length work of dance performed to live music, Dream’d in a

Dream, on October 1−3, a unique collaboration with the traditional Kyrgyz music ensemble Ustatshakirt Plus and, featuring a week of community engagement activities led

by Artistic Director and dancer Seán Curran.

Next are Ensemble-InResidence Third Coast Percussion’s a Sound uttered, a Silence crossed (Oct. 30), by award-winning composer and percussionist Nathan Davis with a libretto by Laura Mullen and featuring Notre Dame Collegium Musicum directed by Daniel Stowe, and Surface Tension (January 30) by one of Ireland’s leading composers, Donnacha Dennehy, for an exploration of the sound world of the bodhrán.

Last, Artistic Director Jacques Heim’s dance com-

pany, Diavolo/Architecture in Motion, with L’Espace du Temps (April 28−30), which will offer the region’s first and only performances of the trilogy, Foreign Bodies, Fearful Symmetries and Fluid Infinites, in its entirety, an event more than seven years in the making.

Executive director Anna M. Thompson announces the 2015−2016 season. Her curatorial duties for assembling the lineup included programming innovative chamber music with Notre Dame Department of Music faculty and resident artists ensembleND and Gesualdo Quartet, respectively.

Thompson accomplished this with three diverse events in “16 X 16: Centenary Tribute to Ireland,” an acknowledgment of the Irish diaspora’s significant contributions to contemporary music, dance and theater.

With Notre Dame’s growing reputation in vocal and choral performance, a number of events were curated to showcase a range of configurations and concert experiences in both sacred and secular music.

There is a debut solo recital by tenor, and Notre Dame

alumnus Paul Appleby, who was also a member of the center’s student staff during his studies at the university. This season also marks the Presenting Series debut of the world’s foremost Renaissance sacred choral music ensemble, England’s The Tallis Scholars. And, fresh off last season’s sell-out performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, baritone Nathan Gunn returns, this time accompanied by his wife, pianist Julie Gunn, and Gesualdo Quartet, for a concert of poetic art song all sung in English.

Get ready to ride Annual Niles Burn Run fundraiser set for next weekend

N

ILES, Mich. —One of the area’s most popular motorcycle ride fundraisers is set to roll off next weekend on a 50-mile trip through southwest Michigan.

While people can register all the way up to the day of the event, those wanting to ensure themselves of getting a ride shirt need to pre-register before the end of the day Friday.

Any registrations taken after Friday will only get ride shirts on a first-come first served basis.

The ride itself will begin at noon Sunday, July 12, in downtown Niles.

The cost is $20 per bike or $30 with a rider for those who register by Friday. After that, the cost is $25 per bike or $35 with a rider.

For those that wait to the last

minute, registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the day of the ride.

The easiest way to register is online at the event’s website (nilesburnrun.com), but people can also print off a registration form and mail it to: Niles Burn Run, 1445 S. 3rd St., Niles MI 49120.

All proceeds from the ride go to benefit the Great Lakes Burn Camp, a camp set up to help kids who have been burned or traumatized by fire.

The 2014 event allowed the Burn Run to donate $24,000 to the camp, which was enough money to send 40 kids to camp.

It costs approximately $600 to send each child to the Great Lakes Burn Camp.

In addition to the motorcycle ride, the Burn Run will offer entertainment throughout the weekend in downtown Niles, including live music, automobile show, games, food and more.

Lubeznik Center for the Arts will host ArtBash 2015, LCA’s premier annual fundraising event, at Blue Chip Stardust Event Center.

Fun for all offered at Summer in the City Dowagiac festival offers amenities for youngsters

OWAGIAC, Mich.

— The interactive and popular Princess Party for children and their favorite dolls, hosted by the Miss Dowagiac Scholarship Pageant, will be held Friday, July 17, at noon during Dowagiac’s Summer in the City Festival, as one of Dowagiac’s newest specialty shops also treats children to the special appearance of Elsa from the movie Frozen.

Vickie Phillipson, program director of the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority (DDA) who helped coordinate and raise funding for this year’s summertime bash, said she is pleased to welcome the Miss Dowagiac Scholarship Pageant as the co-host of Friday’s Princess Party that will find pink tiara-topped little girls having their pictures taken alongside Miss Dowagiac 2015 Tori Smith.

Children are invited to dress as a princess and bring their favorite doll with them, as they attend this fun and interactive event. Phillipson said participants of the princessthemed event will receive tiaras, courtesy of the scholarship pageant, which

is celebrating its 77th year.

Children will also parade through the downtown with members of the Miss Dowagiac Court of Honor.

New this year, during the festival, the pageant committee is holding a “Princess for a Day” drawing. The winner will join Miss Dowagiac for a day of pampering at a local salon.

Pageant volunteers will also host children’s games on Friday and Saturday during the festival from 10 to 5 p.m. on Front Street.

Phillipson said adjoining the children’s game site will be a face painter and on Saturday, from 2 to 3 p.m., Carla Lowe will host a Hula Hoop Dance Class for children ages six to 11.

A second princess party will be offered for little girls on Saturday at 11 a.m., hosted at one of Dowagiac’s

newest specialty shops by Tammy Brady, owner of Makenzie Nicole’s. Brady said she is excited to feature Elsa at the party from the movie Frozen. On Friday at 11 a.m. children can also attend the Cookies & Canvas event at Makenzie Nicole’s.

The princess party and Cookies & Canvas event represent a sampling of interactive and specialty activities Brady will be hosting in-store throughout the year.

Presented by the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce July 16-19, Summer in the City features vocal and instrumental entertainment and dance, and array of family events.

From roaming entertainers to camel rides and boot scootin’ Cowboy Rock, organizers have said this

festival has it all.

Phillipson said Summer in the City opens Thursday evening, July 16, as one of southwestern Michigan’s brightest up and coming Country singers, Jared Knox, presents a special two-hour concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Beckwith Park, courtesy of Huntington Bank.

The summertime bash swings into full gear Friday and Saturday with merchant sidewalk sales, family events, live entertainment and beer garden. On Sunday evening, ACTION presents more music and an ice cream social at Beckwith Park.

Children’s activities also feature a small animal petting zoo and pony rides, BMX demos, Food Art for Kids presented by the Dowagiac 7th Day Adventist Church, dunk tank hosted by Dowagiac Department of Public Safety, children’s inflatables provided by Judd Lumber Building Supply & Rental Center, Rubber Ducky Races presented by Dowagiac Fine Arts Boosters, Bricks4Kidz Lego event hosted by Dowagiac Public Library, and pedal cars presented by Crystal Springs Camp & Retreat.
