Third Coast Percussion presents ‘Inuksuit’

M

I S H A WA K A , Ind. — Sorting through many possibilities after their appointment as ensemblein-residence for the University of Notre Dame’s leading presenter of worldclass artistic programming, the four members of Third Coast Percussion knew that one was to produce “Inuksuit” during their fiveyear tenure. Third Coast’s Sean Connors described John Luther Adams’ monumental work as “an intricately structured concert work, a beautifully hypnotic sound installation, an interactive work of performance art, and a communal music making event like no other.” The Chicago-based percussion quartet is comprised of Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin and David Skidmore. This significant arts engagement event is the capstone project of Third Coast’s third month-long summer residency. From mid-July through midAugust the ensemble continues development of commissioned works-in-progress by bringing visiting artists, selected from among the world’s leading new music composers, to Notre Dame. These commissions, two annually, have their world premieres at Notre Dame on the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Presenting Series. “Inuksuit” will receive its Indiana premiere at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, outdoors in Mishawaka’s new Central Park, east of Main Street, a 12-acre attraction that reopened July 2015 after a $5 million renovation. Central Park is the easternmost of those on the city’s revitalized Riverwalk, which connects Kate’s Garden, Kamm Island, Battell Park, Beutter Park and Ball Band Memorial via pedestrian and bike trails along the St. Joseph River. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 15, in the DeBartolo Performing Art Center’s Leighton Concert Hall. “Inuksuit is an incredible event for the percussion and music communities,” Connor said. “We will be

inspiring energy and subtle nuance. These “hard-grooving” musicians (New York Times) have become known for groundbreaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines. Ensemble-inResidence at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center since 2013, they have the performing with Notre Dame faculty, students, and staff, South Bend community members, professional musicians from the Chicago area and performers of mixed ages and experience levels from 11 states. Since performers will be coming from all over the nation, this exact ensemble and collection of instruments will never exist again, but will be forever uniquely linked to the this community.” Scored for as few as nine and up to 99 players, its scalability allows each musician to perform their own unique part as a soloist. All sounds created from three instrument families — air, metal, drums — are notated, not improvised. Connors said instruments for Inuksuit include drums, cymbals, glockenspiels, conch shells, hand crank air raid sirens, several types of rattled shakers, and even the popular “singing tubes,” corrugated plastic hoses sounded by twirling overhead. Naturally, every performance of this piece varies greatly due to how the notated silences and moment-to-moment

responses of one player to another are filled by the environment’s natural and spontaneously occurring sounds. For this reason the sheer acreage of Central Park’s setting was particularly attractive for this sitedetermined art. The performers, identified by T-shirts, move freely throughout the green space, where park visitors can plan seamless or by chance encounter “listening points” on their travels over the course of the composition’s five sections: “Breathing,”

“Calls,” “Clangs,” “Waves,” and “Wind.” About Third Coast Percussion Hailed by The New Yorker as “vibrant” and “superb,” Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds. Formed in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has developed an international reputation with concerts and recordings of Where there is creativity, there is possibility!

Connecting artists in Michiana

The Bridge Project continues efforts to link community

T

he Sounds By South Bend Festival, originally founded by Gus Bennett and Dena Woods, has involved members of the Bridge Project since its second year. In May of 2015, musicians of all genres, many of whom were local acts, took to the stage in venues stretching across downtown South Bend and into Mishawaka. Some of the locations were established night spots, while others were new or temporary sites set up specifically for the event. All of them stayed busy with festival attendees. The event attendance climbed to 1,000 music fans, nearly 200 of whom were students from the Notre Dame campus. It’s what Meghan O’Brien, one of the founding members of South Bend’s The Bridge Project, calls “phenomenal.” The student turnout both in the audience and as festival volunteers connect directly to the mission of the Bridge Project, which has been to promote and cultivate involvement of area college students in the local community, challenging attitudes that the culture of South Bend and that of the local campuses are separate. After encoun-

tering a campus environment that did not encourage exploration to the outside world, Bridge founders O’Brien, Will Murray, Dan Courtney and Olivia LaMagna took a rebellious journey into the city and found that there was much to interest them. Initially, they formed with the idea that they would help revitalize downtown South Bend, but further exploration showed them that what was needed was not a wakeup for the city, but a connection between it and local students. “What if I told you there were all of these cool events in downtown South Bend,” O’Brien would say

to her fellow students at Notre Dame, many of whom had never ventured outside the university. The more she talked to them, the more she realized the lack of connection was in large part due simply to unfamiliarity with the local region by many students not originally from the area. The Bridge Project set out to change that “through socio-cultural events such as concerts, music festivals, art shows, and the like.” They spread the word through grass-roots efforts on campus, including regularly handing out free CDs compiling the music donated by local artists. The Bridge Project has

continued its mission beyond its involvement in the Sounds By South Bend festival. Along with the Birdsell Project, they’ve been heavily involved in creating and promoting events at the Birdsell Mansion in South Bend. The mansion, built in 1898 by the inventors of the Birdsell Alfalfa Huller, has seen periods of vacancy, but is now finding new purpose as the projects work to convert it into a cultural center. It holds artist studio space on the second floor and hosted a number of performances during Sounds By South Bend. It was the June home for the newly revived community event Second Sun and hosted a recent murder mystery evening. With a grand opening planned for Aug. 15, regular live music events and more are

Any ad that hasn’t set a goal is wasted. Ads aimed at driving traffic look quite different then ads trying to change opinion or to drive image.

An ad targeting brides that runs in Tuesday sports may not be as affective as one in the Sunday bridal section. Fish where the fish are.

With all four having now graduated from college, they’re moving on to the next phase of their lives. Medieval majesty in St. Joseph

Mutt March fundraiser offers unique fun for all

S

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Gather thy Hounds, tack up thy steed and head to the Medieval Faire during Animal Aid’s most ambitious Mutt March to date. On Saturday, Aug. 22, Lake Bluff Park in St. Joseph (south of the Farmers’ Market) will be transformed into the mythical Kingdom of DunRoamin. People and their dogs are invited to this unique fundraising event. As a well-recognized, all-volunteer, non-profit animal rescue group in Berrien County, Animal Aid’s mission of more than 36 years has been assisting homeless, abandoned dogs and cats in the southwest Michigan region. What awaits thy animal-lovers? A day in the Marketplace in the Kingdom of DunRoamin begins as guests pass beneath the archway into a land of hope and see Sir Barks-A-Lot, a plush canine suited in armor. DunRoamin is where unwanted dogs can find their forever homes and where villagers will be entertained in a mystical medieval atmosphere. Visitors can sign The Royal Edict by Decree of the King and Queen of DunRoamin so they are known throughout thy kingdom as a supporter of kindly treatment and spay/neuter of hounds and beasties. Organizers remind all visitors to be sure they pick up a commemorative scroll. Walkers will register thy hounds and receive a “Wag” Bag as they embark on their journey to meet King James and Queen Tiffany of the Kingdom. In the merry Marketplace, visitors will find representatives of veterinary clinics, boarding facilities, groomers, pet rescue groups and other persons of interest to dog owners. They can sample and purchase wares at Nottingham Nibbles (doggie treats) and The Queen’s Tea Shoppe (baked goods befitting the Crown). Anyone can also feed the dragon at Dragonwycke (dragon food provided) and visit Woof-ingham to claim their very own Balloon Animal of the Forest. Leaders urge everyone to stop by The Royal Hatter to decorate thy own crown or

head dress, select an egg at The Golden Goose to see what hatches in thy hand, and watch the costume-clad beasties walk their masters through the Marketplace. Walkers are encouraged to dress in costume, (remember some medieval headwear is available to make and purchase at The Royal Hatter). Guests can participate in games of skill and chance in the Royal Gaming Stall and take a Selfie on the Drawbridge of the eight-foot tall castle — and they shouldn’t forget to toss a coin to make a wish at the Wishing Moat while thy prepareth to Kiss A Frog! Lady Caroline’s Photo Booth will offer portraits fit for the royals, and Zoltar, The the Shire. Magnificent will perform feats of magic. No Faire is complete without contests! Additionally, visitors can meet foster Partaketh in Little Digger of the Longest dogs available for adoption at Angels of Tooth (oldest dog), Diminutive, the Brave

(smallest dog in costume), Merlin’s Majik (best canine trick), House of the Many Barks (best costumed multi-dog household), Best Human-Beastie Medieval Costume (most creative canine- person costumer), and Canine/Noble Who Hath Travelled from the Most Afar. Young maidens and squires may enter the coloring contest at The Feather and Quill. All artists will receive a bracelet fashioned by Queen Tiffany while supplies last. Those previously completing their artwork from entry forms in the community should submit them at Ye Old Registry. Those interested are encouraged to check their veterinary office, St. Joseph Today, most local libraries and the website for entry forms. Categories are: 6 years and under, 7-8 years, 9-10 years and 11-12 years. Entry form must accompany each piece and all entries must be received before 1 p.m. on event day. A donation of $1 is requested per entry. Costume and coloring contests will be judged by the King and Queen at the Clock Tower commencing at 1:30 p.m. The winner must be present to win and will be mentioned in the Animal Aid newsletter, Happy Tails, on website and/or facebook. Canine festivities begin at 11 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. along the south half of the bluff (south of the stairs). Contrary to previous notification, there is no rain date due to the extensive setup this year. The public is invited to use a pledge form, available onsite and on the website or simply make a donation in addition to the $10 entry fee (includes Wag Bag). Military and veterans walk free! Unable to attend? Donations are welcome online (www.animalaidswmi.com.) or at P.O. Box 407, St. Joseph, MI 49085.

Traminette winning over wine lovers all over U.S.

pproximately half of Indiana’s wineries sell a Traminette wine. Wine lovers can find the very sweet to bone dry examples of floral wine in stores and tasting rooms from north to south. The hybrid wine grape may have won its crowning achievement in early August at Purdue University when Easley Winery’s 2014 Traminette was named the competition’s 2015 Wine of the Year. Before writing off the honor as just another ribbon or contest, understand the Indy competition is one of the nation’s largest. Wines arrive from 40 states and 12 countries. More than 2,100 wines are tasted during the event. Indiana recorded 316 medals during the competition. Huber Winery, of Starlight, Indiana, was again the Governor’s Cup winner for most awards. Ted Huber was the 2014 Winemaker of the Year. But others had a big showing as well. Country Heritage and Vineyards, near Fort Wayne, took home more than 20 ribbons along with the Indiana Farm Winery of the Year award. French Lick Winery won 19 awards. Turtle Run had its best showing with two “Best of Class” winners, two double golds, and two golds. You can find a link for all Indiana awards on my blog: www.howardhewitt.net

Howard Hewitt Grape Sense

But after all the awards judges taste the best of the best and selected the Easley Traminette as the show’s best-made wine. The downtown Indianapolis-based winery has been on a roll with the state’s signature grape. The 2014 wine won a gold medal at the 2015 MidAmerican Wine Competition in Iowa, a double gold at the 2015 Tasters Guild International in Michigan, and a gold at the Great Lakes Great Wine competition in Michigan. “Back in 2009 we really got behind growing and making Traminette wines,” said second generation winemaker and owner Mark

Easley. “Our first Traminette grapes came out of the Kauffman Vineyards in Posey County. The vineyard was owned by our winemaker Jeff Martin’s grandfather, Harley Kauffman. When we saw how well it grew in Indiana, and the fact it was going to become the signature grape of Indiana, it was a no-brainer.” Today the Traminette grapes come from four vineyards all within 300 miles of downtown Indianapolis. “All of our grapes are planted on at least two farms so that we always have grapes even in a frost year,” Easley explained. The farms are located in Harmony, Indiana, Jennings County,

Berrien County, Michigan, and Yates County in New York. Easley produces approximately 2,500 cases of Traminette annually. Some wine or juice is sold off to eight Indiana wineries. Traminette has done so well for Easley he continues to plant. “We’ve been planting one to five acres of Traminette at three of our four farms each year over the last five years.” Ribbons and medals help sell wine. Easley’s wife Meredith heads up marketing efforts. “Wines that are presented in a tasting room with gold medals typically get tasted more often than those

with a lesser medal or none at all,” she said. She explained wine drinkers realize medals come from judges with expertise and background to determine well-made wines. Meredith Easley said awards validate quality in the vineyard and winemaking. But the goal in the tasting room is to always find the wine a taster likes. The Easley name is familiar in Hoosier supermarkets like Kroger, Marsh and Mejier particularly with their Raggae line of sweet wines. Their award winning Traminette can be found in many of the same stores. In the next Grape Sense,

Easley will talk about what it takes in the vineyard and winery to make his award winning Traminette. Howard’s take on Easley Traminette: The wine is known for its floral nose and taste with apricot and even honey on the palate. For wine purists, it’s most often compared to Gewurztraminer. While too many Indiana wineries let the grapes stay on the sweet to very-sweet style, Easley’s award winning wine is far more restrained. The approach makes the wine more drinkable for those without a plate for sweet wines. (SRP $13.95)

Best breweries in west Michigan

T

he market for craft beer has been steadily increasing for well over a decade, and West Michigan is home to a plethora of fantastic breweries and each has a unique lineup of their signature craft beers. Having beer brewed so close to home gives west Michigan the luxury of drinking fresh and local. So what is craft beer? According to the Brewers Association, craft beer is three things: small, independent, and local. These breweries are small in the sense that they make less than 6 million barrels of beer annually. They are independent if less than 25 percent of the company is owned by an alcohol industry member that is not a craft brewer and traditional if the majority of total beverage alcohol volume in the brews are traditional or innovative ingredients or fermentation methods. What does west Michigan have to offer? Craft beer is brewed all over West Michigan. Make sure to check out one or all of these great breweries.

The history of Heath Company spotlighted in museum program

S

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center will host a program presented by William Johnson, If you build it: A History of Heathkit. Johnson, a past president of Heath Company, will take a look at the company’s history, including many personal anecdotes from his 30 year career. A display of Heath catalogs, unassembled kits and Heath products will be on display at the program. Light refreshments will be served. During the last half of the 20th Century, people across the globe were assembling their own electronic equipment from kits created by a company headquartered in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. Heathkit began in 1925 when Edward Heath founded the Heath Airplane Company in Chicago. After Heath’s untimely

death in 1931, the company was purchased by Howard Anthony, who moved operations to Benton Harbor. Heath prospered through the World War II production years, but after military contracts dried up, Anthony searched for a new direc-

tion for the company’s development. Through the purchase of a surplus of electronic parts in 1947, Anthony created the first Heathkit, the O1 oscilloscope which consumers could purchase and assemble for a fraction of the price of a new oscilloscope.

“We will not let you fail,” was the company slogan. Even a novice could successfully complete a working Heathkit. By 1962, there were over 200 Heathkits for products ranging from transistor radios and stereo receivers to color televisions and

Call for Farmer’s Market Vendors

E

LKHART, Ind. — The Elkhart County Parks is looking for farmers’ market vendors for their upcoming Bonneyville Mill Heritage Day event. The event will be held at Bonneyville Mill County Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The organization is looking for vendors who sell any of the following products to be a part of an event that attracts over 2,000 people and celebrates the agricultural heritage of the mill and surrounding community: • Fruits & vegetables • Potted plants • Jams & jellies • Herbs, vinegars & oils • Homemade candy & syrups • Soaps • Baked goods • Other agricultural related products Vendor spaces are available under Feedlot Shelter or in the yard. More information can be found at www. elkhartcountyparks.org or by calling (574) 535-6458.

robots. Heathkit developed an international following. People all over the world ordered kits through Heath catalogs or purchased them in-person at Heath retail stores. Closely following market trends and investing in research and development placed

Heath at the forefront of the personal computer revolution in the 1970s, even as the kit business was waning. Through several changes in ownership, Heath managed to maintain its strong brand identity and sales until the 1990s. Admission to the program is $5 and free for students and members of the Heritage Museum. The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center is located at 601 Main Street in St. Joseph, Michigan. Current exhibits are Sports in Southwest Michigan, Take Me Back: Photographs of the Twin Cities from the 1950s, The Big Three: Boat and Shipbuilding in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Lighting the Way: Fresnel Lenses from St. Joseph’s Lighthouses, and In Style: 50 Years of the Heritage Museum’s Fashion Collections. The new-and-improved event, was located in the festival’s original location in Lions Beachfront Park, rather than on Whittaker Street as in previous years. Thousands attended the festival to watch popular jazz and blues musicians, take advantage of food trucks and mingle with other Michiana tourists.
