Jazz festival celebrating five years S OUTH BEND, Ind. — South Bend Jazz Festival is celebrating its fifth birthday with a huge party. This year, the celebration has relocated to the Island at Century Center. Featuring world-class jazz, delicious food, craft brews from Crooked Ewe and a view of the St. Joseph River, organizers say it is the perfect spot to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. The event runs from 4 to 11 p.m. Aug. 20. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 online or $18 at the gate.

Featured artists include: Kathy Kosins and Uncovered Soul Born and raised in the Motown era in Detroit, Grammy Award winning vocalist Kathy Kosins is described as “the real deal.” With her unique smoky, soulful voice and an impeccably elegant phrasing, it is no wonder she is one of the industry’s most sought after session singers. Her latest offering, “Uncovered Soul,” is based on a sonic worldview shaped by the interpersonal and musical landscape of Detroit in the late ‘60s and ‘70s, but with compositions specifically designed to add a contemporary point of view. Joe McBride Not even blindness could impair Joe McBride’s (musical) vision. On his latest Heads Up recording he features songs originally written and recorded by a range of pop luminaries, including Gnarls Barkley, Coldplay, John Mayer, Seal and Jill

Scott, but re-imagined with straight-ahead jazz arrangements. “To be honest, I really wanted to try to reach a different audience with my new album,” McBride said. “I’m all about growth. It’s all about making the old things new. It’s okay to look back for just a moment, but the more important idea is to keep our eyes on the future.” One of today’s most popular contemporary jazz musicians, McBride’s many credits include a major supporting role in 2000’ “The Riff,” a feature

film about the New Orleans Jazz Scene. The Danny Lerman Experience Combining his African, Latin, Middle Eastern and American influences with powerfully unique storytelling, Danny Lerman makes what the legendary Tony Bennett once referred to as “beautiful music, man!” Lerman’s beautifully exotic songs mix lush arrangements with riveting improvisation. A true showman, Lerman’s dynamic charm makes his performances an unforgettable experience.

Rico The Rico recipe is simple: mix a cast of talented musicians, stir in a sophisticated, hypnotic blend of afro-cuban rhythms and season with a rich, flavorful sound. Rico creates an immense fiery soulful sound through bass, congas, percussion, drums, timbales, keyboards, guitar, and pure passion. Influenced and inspired by innovative rock, soul, jazz, afro-cuban, blues, funk, reggae, and hiphop, Rico is world music and their vision is to play inspiring music that brings people together in happiness and harmony.

Kevin Scott Joiner Born in England and raised in Florida, Kevin Scott Joiner grew up in a musical family and started performing on stage when he was barely out of kindergarten. His earliest musical sustenance consisted of a steady diet of country and western, southern gospel, and ‘50s rock-and-roll, but it was the discovery of classic rock albums that truly lit the spark of inspirations. From b-boy hip-hop to skate punk, classic R&B to modern prog rock, or synth pop to traditional Irish folk, Joiner has always been one to follow his muse wherever it leads. And after more than 20

years of professional performing and songwriting, the intersection of these various styles and many others, heightened by Joiner’s deep exploration of them all, has resulted in an approach to both song and stagecraft that, while falling generally under the umbrella of popular music, is hard to pin down beyond words like “soulful,” “complex” and “compelling”.

A big month for Indiana wine tasting I ndiana’s top wine event is unquestionably Vintage Indiana held in Indianapolis in early June each year. Vintage Indiana brings 30-plus Hoosier wineries to Military Park in Indianapolis and gives thousands an opportunity to sample hundreds of Indiana wines. Unfortunately, the event was nearly drowned out this year with a day of heavy downpours. (Pun intended). Indiana’s second-best wine celebration might be Uncork the Uplands, Saturday, July 30, French Lick, Indiana. Uncork celebrates the nine wineries of the Indiana Uplands Agricultural Viticulture Area or AVA. The AVA thing is significant. The Uplands is the only AVA in Indiana. If you’re a wine drinker and like Pinot think of the Willamette Valley’s Dundee Hills, or Howell Mountain in Napa. An

AVA is a federally-recognized agricultural area which produces quality grapes for quality wines. The sixth annual event runs 4-7 p.m. at the wonderful French Lick Springs Hotel. Lastminute tickets are $60. Wine fans can find a lot more information on the official website uncorktheuplands.com Unfortunately, getting a hotel room in French Lick on this summer weekend might be tough. The two resorts are sold out. But there are other small chain hotels nearby. The event features wines from all nine wineries. Visitors have the chance to talk to winemakers and winery owners. Past Uncork events featured plenty of small bites of food and even entertainment. The 2016 early evening wine tasting is the first not to be held at Oliver or Huber wineries. French Lick is a great location, though a bit of

an effort to get there in the Hoosier heartland. French Lick Winery will become something of an official/ unofficial host. The Doty family has a long history with Indiana wine and the Uplands event. The French Lick Winery is using the Saturday event to introduce its new distillery. The VIP event is sold out but signals another Indiana winery entering the competitive distillery business. Ted Huber has been the real pioneer among Indiana winemakers to jump into the distilled spirits business. French Lick seems like a natural with the two fabulous, Indiana landmark hotels and a bustling casino. There is another event coming up that seems to get less attention. Indiana wineries pour their wines throughout the Indiana State Fair, 1-9 p.m., each day of the fair, Aug. 5-21. State Fair attendees who are also wine fans

econd Star Theater will present the Jason Robert Brown musical, “The Last Five Years,” starring Justin Williams and Alyssa Atkinson at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Shows will also be performed at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. All performances will be in the Recital Hall at the Century Center, located at 120 South St. Joseph St. in South Bend. Tickets range from $12 to $15. “The Last Five Years,” featuring music by the multi award-winning composer/lyricist, Jason Robert Brown, is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in love. The title is not only a reference to their relationship, but also a call to the structure of the show itself, with the element of time folding in on itself and echoing the sometimes disorienting quality of love. Cathy tells her story backwards, while Jamie tells his chronologically. “Jamie” Granger resident Justin Williams has been performing for almost two decades. Since taking to the boards he has played roles that include: Pippin (“Pippin”), Seymour (“Little Shop of Horrors”), Victor Frankenstein (“Frankenstein”), Marius (“Les Miserables”) and Fredrick Frankenstein (“Young Frankenstein”). Justin’s concert/cabaret credits include appearing at the Palais Royale, Firehouse Cabaret and Stage 773 in Chicago. Justin would like to thank Mamma Monkey, Grandma Monkey, Sister Monkey, Hannah Monkey and Poppo Monkey for all of their support and love. Also a huge shout out to Brett Mitchell for believing in this crazy dream! “Cathy” Elkhart resident Alyssa Atkinson is an actress/singer who has appeared in the recent,“Chicago, The Musical” at St. Mary’s College; “The Rocky Horror Show” and The Kander and Ebb Concert, both at Firehouse Cabaret. Alyssa made her cabaret debut at Ruthmere Museum last October. She is currently a student at St. Mary’s College working towards a business degree. THE NEW BUFFALO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION PRESENTS

For more information, contact the Symphony office at (269) 982-4030 or visit www.smso.org Top Secret Band Joe Arnold — Bass, vocals

David Taylor — Guitars, vocals KJ Hammerstein — Keyboards, saxophone, drums, bass, guitars, vocals Michael Bruneau — Drums, vocals Once upon a time, bass player Joe Arnold and drummer Mike Bruneau were in a band together called Mambo Sun. Joe was also in another band called ETA with singer Kate McMahon. Both bands broke up around August 2007. Fast forward to October 2007. ETA had a gig booked at Pete’s Simonton Lake Tavern in Elkhart. However, since they were no longer around, Joe needed to find some musicians to play the gig. He called up Kate, Mike and guitarists Dave

Denlinger and David Taylor, and asked them if they would like to play the show together. This lineup played the show at Pete’s with no rehearsal, and had a wonderful time. They had no name for themselves, so the owner put the name Top Secret on his sign, and the name stuck. The gig at Pete’s went so well that Joe just started booking more shows...and the rest is history. As of 2013, the core members of Top Secret are Dave Taylor (guitars/ vox), Joe Arnold (bass/vox) and Michael Bruneau (drums/vox). However, on some occasions, we have special guests Dave Denlinger (guitars)

or Kris “KJ” Hammerstein (keys/sax) play shows with us. As we head into our 6th year of existence, the train keeps rollin’!!! Libido Funk Circus Originally formed as an over-the-top tribute to the Disco music of the 1970s, Libido Funk Circus has been relentlessly entertaining a wide range of audiences since it’s inception in 1996. While they continue to play your favorite disco hits, the addition of hundreds of dance and rock songs, spanning from the 1960s through today, has quite literally turned LFC into a human jukebox. From the hits of the good ol’ Motown days to the bass-thumping beats of today’s dance music; from the always danceable disco grooves to the new wave rock of the 1980s… LFC has it “covered.” Take one look at their ever-expanding song list and you will be sold. While their legendary catalog has certainly become the band’s trademark, LFC’s non-stop energy, showmanship and exquisite musicality is what truly sets them apart from the rest. With top-notch, professional musicians (including both male and female lead vocalists) and hundreds of songs under its collective belt, Libido Funk Circus has all the tools to make a room move all night long. Having performed thousands of times at clubs, weddings, corporate and private parties, sporting events, casinos and street festivals, Libido Funk Circus realizes the crucial role live entertainment plays at every type of event. With a professionalism that only comes with many years of experience, LFC is truly adept at honoring the tone you envision for your affair and can accommodate their stage apparel and musical selections to suit the evening’s ambience. Capable of switching styles and genres at the drop of a hat, Libido Funk Circus can entertain any audience... from small children to the most critical musical connoisseurs! By popular demand, Libido Funk Circus frequently performs both 1970s and 1980s theme nights; complete with authentic costuming and music from each era. Perfect for theme parties, class reunions and more.

Party on the Pavers

o Baroda area business association showcases local wineries, breweries

W

By ALLIE WILSON Allie.wilson@leaderpub.com

hen the small town of Baroda began to die down a few years ago, the Baroda Area Business Association came up with the idea to host a festival to showcase not just local wineries and breweries, but the town itself. “Party on the pavers is a local event put on by the Baroda Area Business Association to showcase our local wineries and breweries, as well as get people to come see the Baroda area and see what we are all about,” said Tina Boehm, Clerk at the Village of Baroda. “It is mainly sponsored by members of the Association.” Party on the Pavers will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13 on First Street in Baroda. “Baroda is known as ‘the heart of wine country,’ and up until three years ago, we never showcased our own wine/beer in any way within the Village, but all the communities around us were having awesome festivals,” Boehm said. “We (the Association) came up with an idea for our own street party and invited our own members to showcase their grapes/hops in their own backyard.” Boehm said organizers put a lot of though and effort into not just showcasing the community’s wine and beer, but also its history. “We chose the first block of First Street as the location because of the original pavers that are on the street, thus the name of the event ‘Party on the Pavers,’” she said. Guests can expect plenty to eat and drink from all the local businesses and live music in a relaxed atmosphere. Tents and tables are available but guests are also encouraged to bring their own chairs. This year two bands will be featured: the Crawpuppies from Northern Indiana, and JR Clark and the All Star Blues Mob from South Haven. The event usually averages between 2,000 and 2,500 people. “Anyone can attend,” Boehm said. “We love meeting all of the people that come from around the country to visit. Plus, it’s fun to see all our friends and neighbors from right in town.” For more information, visit barodavillage.org or call (269) 422-1779.
