FOCUS
College student releases first published book By Jill K. McDonald
T
roy S. Sweers of Union, Michigan, is a newly published author. His book “Return” was just released on Sept. 9. His target audience is young adults, science fiction fans, horror fans and fans of all things post-apocalyptic. Sweers describes the book as a post-apocalyptic fiction novel following a group of human survivors as they fight to take the earth back from the powerful and mysterious Faceless invaders. Using humanity’s own wars, fuel consumption and careless use of resources, the Faceless easily took control of the earth in humanity’s weakest moments. Humanity is on the verge of extinction, and there is nowhere left to hide from earth’s new rulers. No matter how little hope is left, no matter how many losses the survivors take, humanity will never give in without a fight, not even after they have already lost. Sweers said he absolutely loves writing his own fiction. “I’m constantly coming up with stories in my head. I’m imaging different scenarios and plot-lines, which play out in my mind sort of like a movie,” the author said. Not only is this Sweers first published book, but also it is the first book he has ever written in general. Once he finished his manuscript, he sent it out to some close friends to get their feedback. When positive remarks came back, he said he decided to send it out to several publishing companies. Sweers wanted to have his book published not for the money or to get his name out, but for the satisfaction of knowing that others would be reading and enjoying a story he thought up on his own. “It’s always such an honor when somebody takes interest in something you came up with,” Sweers said. After waiting patiently, Tate Publishing accepted Sweers book for publication. After he read and signed a contract, his manuscript was sent back and forth between he and the editors to make it spotless. He then followed instructions from the publisher and

Troy Sweers, of Union, recently published "Return", available in book stores now. waited for details on the release of his book and what he could do as a new author to promote it. For aspiring authors, Sweers suggested, “Write your ideas down, even if they’re very basic ideas. If
you like the thought enough, you’ll be able to flesh out the rest more easily if your original starting point is written down.” When writing fictional stories, Sweers found it helpful to create what he
refers to as a “story tree.” This is a timeline of diverging events that could happen in his story. He used this method to brainstorm many different paths his story could take, each with their own ending. Though Sweers grew up in Union, Michigan, close to the Indiana border, he attended Elkhart Christian Academy, and graduated from Concord High School. He currently is a sophomore at Grace College and Seminary in Winona Lake, working toward a degree in web design and development. Once he earns his college degree, he plans to work for the RV panel factory Positron, where he will train under his father who owns the company. His dream job is to work for an accomplished video game developer as a storywriter or conceptual artist. Sweers is an avid gamer and considers games a high form of art. As he plays, he analyzes every aspect — the mechanics, physics, storyline, art style and music compositions. “It would be an honor for one of my own stories to be made into a game some day,” Sweers said. Troy Sweers book is available through bookstores nationwide, from the publisher at www.tatepublishing.com/bookstore, or by visiting barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com. To connect with the author and to be informed of upcoming book signings, find him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/returnbook.

Learn to cook Martin's offers fall cooking classes
S
By D. E. Messick
TEVENSVILLE, Mich. – Ready for fall? So is Martin’s Cooking School in Stevensville, Michigan. This month, a special glutenfree cooking class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 and will feature a fall favorite: apples! “Apples are synonymous with this time of year in Michigan,” said Lisa Micunek, coordinator for the Stevensville Martin’s Super Market School of Cooking. Fresh from the Apple Orchard will feature dinners, breakfasts, lunch items and yes, desserts, made using apples as a main ingredient. “Primarily, people think of apples as a ‘sweets’ thing,” she said of the class. “We’re showing them different ways to think outside the box with apples.” Locally famous chef Darcy Bloss will lead the class. She
began teaching around four years ago at the Granger location. She and her husband own the Max Black Fine Arts Studio and she was also a contestant in the Dancing with out Stars 2013 Miracle Auction for the Center for the Homeless. Bloss specializes in glutenfree cooking and baking, thanks a gluten allergy she children developed at a young age. “She does a great job with these hands-on experiences,” Micunek said. Bloss will verbally walk participants through each recipe. They will then be divided into small groups, and each group will have around two hours make two or three dishes based on the recipes listed above. After all the dishes are finished, participants will get to sit down at a banquet table to enjoy all the dishes they made together. The Martin’s School of Cooking is a state-of-the-art
classroom sponsored by KitchenAid, with major appliances and countertop appliances from the manufacturer. The classroom overlooks the sales floor and a gathering space where many different types of groups meet regularly. Martin’s usually holds five public classes per month at the facility. It is only the third school of cooking in the Martin’s Supermarket chain of stores. Registration for the ‘Fresh from the Apple Orchard’ cooking class with Chef Darcy Bloss is $30 per person. For more information, contact Lisa Micunek at lmicunek@martinssupermarkets.com or by calling (269) 4291711.

The vegan breakfast challenge Less than a week ago, I was hiking in the Peruvian Andes on a five day trek to Machu Picchu. It was an incredible experience covering over 100 kilometers of varying mountain terrain. I saw everything from snow capped peaks and glaciers to avocados growing by the side of the trail in the jungle. It was some of the most gorgeous countryside I’ve ever seen. One of the best things about being in the Andes, was the opportunity to try a lot of the staples of the ancient mountain people. To the Inca civilization, crops such as potatoes and quinoa, that could grow at high altitudes, were critical to their survival. As it were, we ate a ton of quinoa and potatoes on the trail. It was fine with me, as these are two of my favorite staples, especially when I need the kind energy you need when you have to hike upwards of seven hours a day. I was extremely lucky on this trip to have my own cook making me vegan meals and snacks the entire time. In fact, one of the rea-
sons I picked the hiking company I did, was because they had photos of a vegetarian menu option on their web site. In a lot of foreign countries, I would be concerned about the grasp of a vegan menu, especially for breakfast. Even right here in the USA, it’s difficult for a lot of people to grasp what to make a vegan for breakfast. Fortunately, the indigenous dependance on quinoa afforded me some of the best traveling meals I’ve ever had at a breakfast table. One dark and windy predawn morning I was sitting at the table in my winter coat shivering off both sleep and cold, when the cook appeared and set a tin cup full of steaming quinoa with apples and cinnamon in front of me. The sweet breakfast cereal warmed my soul and was just what I needed to fuel my mind and body enough to climb a mountain and hike about 10 hours that day. The warm breakfast cereal was comforting, and quinoa is packed with protein, so it’s probably about

Also, it was deli- sions of this creative! cious! I made a note right away to recreate it when I returned to Chicago, and it’s the first of many Peruvian recipes that I set out to make. I used pears instead of apples, because that’s what I had, but I think this would also really work well with dried

RIDGMAN, Mich. — Anyone who has driven down Church Street through Bridgman recently may have seen Pamela Kirkham painting in her garage, her summer studio, creating abstract backgrounds for her new series that combines abstraction and realism. Now, people can view the finished product. Pamela Kirkham’s entry -“Fight or Flight” can be viewed at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan at sBridgewater Place, 333 Bridge Street between rSept. 24 and Oct. 12, 2014. During the winter, the nartist paints highly detailed flying creatures that are afeatured in her work. The yidea for the series came about when a close friend of hers was diagnosed with cancer and Pam wanted to create works of art that would help him escape tfrom his pain and suffer:ing, if only for a short time. Motion in each abstract background takes the viewer up and out the top of the painting, away from your life struggles. Multiple flying creatures, which in various cultures are believed to take human souls to heaven, take you up and out and then back into thier inner soul. Dragonflies, bluebirds, hummingbirds, fireflies, black swallowtail butterflies, Luna Moths, and Monarchs are some of the symbolic flying creatures featured in Kirkham’s work. Pamela is a professional local artist who teaches at The Box Factory for the Arts and the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, and Michael’s Arts & Crafts in Benton Harbor. All God’s Children visit the Box Factory
R
eturning to the Box Factory by popular demand is Gemini with the All God’s Children Choir on at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27. Organizers at the Box Factory say the choir’s show last year was a rousing, inspiring crowd pleaser. Gemini, twin brothers San and Laz Slomovits, are awardwinning singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, nationally known for their music for children and fami-
lies. In this concert, the brothers return to the roots of their music — the classic songs of Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Malvina Reynolds, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel, etc., as well as traditional songs associated with the 1960s. This is the music San and Laz grew up on, and they have put together a tribute/ celebration concert with these quintessential songs. Community members are
encouraged to visit the Box Factory and sing along. For part of this concert, Gemini will be joined by the All God’s Children Community Choir, a racially diverse group of children and teens, ages four to 18, from many communities in Southwest Michigan. Now in its 14th year, All God’s Children has performed at numerous events, including a special Martin Luther King Day concert in 2014 at Chicago’s Navy Pier and per-
formances with renowned professional musicians Tom Chapin, Josh White Jr., LaRon Williams, Nikki Harris, Pamela Chappell, Peter Yarrow and Gemini. Tickets for this concert are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. Children 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. For more on Box Factory events, visit the Box online at www.boxfactoryforthearts. org or be a friend on Facebook.

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — There is a cornucopia of good times waiting for all ages in downtown St. Joseph, Mich., on Sept. 26 and 27. St. Joseph Today has gathered a weekend of favorite fall activities. In fact, there are so many ideas to pick from that visitors to this Lake Michigan resort community will want to spend the night to take it all in. For lodging information, visit www.stjoetoday.com/sleep.
Friday
The Second Annual Rotary and Slumberland Great Bed Race will get the fun rolling at 4:30 p.m. on Lake Blvd. Teams will raise funds for the Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary youth programs and for Slumberland Furniture 40 Winks Foundation which provides mattresses and beds to children who need them. Then from 5 to 8 p.m., downtown merchants and restaurants will participate in “It’s Finally Friday” festivities. Sales, harvest menus and entertainment will fill the evening.
Saturday
Day on the Farm, sponsored by United Federal Credit Union, will feature just-harvested fruits and vegetables, locally raised meats and fall decorations at the downtown Farmers Market. A free petting zoo will give visitors a chance to interact with goats, rabbits and ducks. Face painting and live music will round out the activities. The Great Pumpkin Festival, sponsored as well by Benton Harbor Sunshine Rotary starts at 10 a.m. This all-day event includes pumpkin carving and decorating contests, pumpkin games and prizes, plant and bake sales and culminates with the Great Pumpkin Race at 2 p.m. Participants will cheer on a flotilla of numbered pumpkins. The first five pumpkins to cross the finish line will win $1,000, $300, $200, $100 and $50. A $10 entry fee will benefit Benton Harbor youth programs.
