OWAGIAC, Mich. — Vendors of handmade products, antiques and collectibles, along with fall produce and baked goods are invited to appear at the openair marketplace of Dowagiac’s Under the Harvest Moon Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8. Roast Coffee at Home!

YOUR ADVERTISING One and Done

1

Advertising works best when scheduled with frequency. An advertiser who runs one ad and waits for results is wasting money.

2

All successful advertising need to make a point. If the reader has to work to determine what the point is the ad is wasted.

#

#

3

#

Pointless

Too Many Points

Some advertisers feel every inch of an ad must be used, such as 75 things on sale in a two inch ad. It works best to make a simple single point.

5

#

#

6

Stopping Power If an ad doesn’t stop and pull a reader in, it is often wasted.

7

#

Goal Less Any ad that hasn’t set a goal is wasted. Ads aimed at driving traffic look quite different then ads trying to change opinion or to drive image.

Miss the Target

An ad targeting brides that runs in Tuesday sports may not be as affective as one in the Sunday bridal section. Fish where the fish are.

Fickle Format Advertisers who constantly change the look and styles of their ads lose the residual cumulative benefit of the ad schedule.

T. JOSEPH, Mich. —The Krasl Art Center celebrates artists yearround, but once a year, Krasl members get to be in the spotlight. Every year, this exhibition attracts artwork by local and regional artists of all ages and skillsets, working in a variety of media styles who are also supporting members of the KAC. Organizers say the show is accessible, fun and full of variety, and showcases a source of community pride and the immense cultural wealth of the area through individuals and their artistic pursuits. Each year for the members’ show, the Krasl puts forth a challenge to participating artists. Due to the high number of entries in the past, this year’s challenge is one of scale. All artists have been asked to submit one piece no larger than one yard by one yard by one yard, hence the tagline,

WASTE

YOUR ADVERTISING One and Done

1

Advertising works best when scheduled with frequency. An advertiser who runs one ad and waits for results is wasting money.

2

All successful advertising need to make a point. If the reader has to work to determine what the point is the ad is wasted.

3

Some advertisers feel every inch of an ad must be used, such as 75 things on sale in a two inch ad. It works best to make a simple single point.

Point the Finger Often, when an ad doesn’t work the finger is pointed at the media. Understanding what placement, frequency and message will most appeal your customers is a valuable and necessary learning process.

Looks Like You

Advertising must reflect your businesses’s image.

A giant celebration

Hundreds attend annual Pokagon Pow Wow Leader photos/TED YOAKUM

D

OWAGIAC, Mich. — The pulsing rhythm of drums, the powerful vocals, the jiggling of bells — all sounds that heralded the kickoff of yet another time-honored traditional celebration of the harvest by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. The tribe hosted its 31st annual KeeBoon-Mein-Kaa Pow Wow this weekend, bringing out hundreds of Native American dancers and singers from across the U.S. and Canada to its pow wow arena off Rodgers Lake. "Kee-boon-mein-kaa" in the Potawatomi language refers to the end of the huckleberry harvest. Today, Pokagons continue to celebrate the harvest and all the hard work put into it during the annual celebration Labor Day weekend. Hundreds more attended the festivities, watching on from the stands as participants competed in various dance contests throughout the weekend. Kicking off the festivities was Saturday’s grand entry, when the various dancers all assembled, led by various tribal veterans holding the ceremonial eagle staffs. The stands of the pow wow arena were packed as hundreds witnessed the opening event.
