Window Decorating Contest By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com
Get ready to decorate Niles. The Four Flags Area Apple Festival is once again holding its annual window-decorating contest for local merchants. Businesses along the parade route are asked to decorate their windows in an Apple Festival theme. “It really is wide open as far as what decorations you want to come up with,” said Karen Alexander, chairman of the window-decorating contest. This year, the Apple Festival will award $50 to the winning business, $30 to the runner-up and $20 for third place. The winner will also receive the traveling trophy, which can be displayed all year. First through third-place finishers will get ribbons. Leader Publications won first place last year. It’s free to participate. To enter, register with Alexander at (269) 683-4507. “We hope to have a lot of businesses register,” said Alexander. “It is about having fun, being creative, showing support for the community and attracting customers to the downtown.” Alexander said judging will take place Sept. 27. Results will be posted at the Apple Festival. Participating businesses can set up decorations anytime.

PARMALE From the tiny town of Parmale, North Carolina, a town that’s home to a gas station, two blinking yellow lights and a small tin-roofed barn dubbed Studio B, country rockers Parmalee launched their long journey to Nashville. The band is comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas, cousin Barry Knox and longtime friend Josh McSwain Parmalee’s country rock sound has its roots in the bluegrass, traditional country, southern rock and blues that the guys grew up hearing their families play. Country fans recently voted the band’s debut single, “Musta Had A Good Time,” No. 1 for four consecutive weeks on SiriusXM’s “The Highway,” and the song is a Top 40 hit on mainstream country radio. The fun-loving party anthem has been featured in national sporting event broadcasts from the PGA to MLB. Parmalee has been highlighted in USA Today, AOL’s The Boot, Country Aircheck, Country Weekly and been named a “Bubbling Under Artist” by Billboard magazine. The signs are clear that after a long, tumultuous journey to Nashville, Parmalee is home at last. The band will perform Saturday, September 28 at 7 p.m.

Column: My memories of the first Apple Festival By JOHN EBY john.eby@leaderpub.com
“Tonight Show” band leader Carl “Doc” Severinsen performed at the first Four Flags Area Apple Festival I know that because I attended one of his two performances Oct. 20, 1973, at Niles High School. Seems like every time I want to hear good screech trumpet I end up at NHS, where I also saw Bill Chase shortly before he died in a plane crash. Severinsen, now 86, found himself embroiled in
a bit of controversy when he hit town because word had gone out in those pre-social media days that he called Niles a “hick town.” The trumpeter told both audiences he was stunned by such reports and categorically denied making any such pronouncement. “I come from a town of 600 in Oregon,” he said. “I sure as heck would never make such a remark.” Severinsen, besides leading the NBC Orchestra on “The Tonight Show” for Johnny Carson, was known for his sartorial splendor. colorful outfit he wore in the inaugural parade — “the largest ever staged in Niles” — didn’t disappoint. Ticket prices ranged from $4.50 to $7.50. Can’t remember which show I saw, but probably the first. My only other recollection of the 104-unit parade besides its length, like a Blossomtime Grand Floral Parade, was a professional athlete in a vintage car. Maybe my memor y tricked me, but I thought it was a Chicago Bear. Our morgue indicates Tigers slugger Willie Horton was unit 38 in a 1948 Mercury. Unit 5 carried Michigan Apple Queen Melanie Eberbach. There was a rainy opening ceremony on Saturday morning at Chapin Mansion, then City Hall. Advancing soggy colors were Brayton Yaw, Bertrand Township supervisor; Lowell McMillen, Howard Township supervisor, whom I knew as a Cass County commissioner; Niles Mayor Ralph Wegner; and Bernard Green, Niles Township trustee. The supervisors, including Jerold Sanders of Niles Township, rode with Mayor Wegner. Green Giant Railroad A kiddies costume parade took place on Sunday with many decorated bikes en-
tered. One unusual feature of the parade was the Green Giant Railroad, with youngsters garbed as cans of vegetables marching beside train cars. The parade formed at Ring Lardner Junior High School and marched to Eastgate. Johnny Appleseed (Chad Sabot) visited first graders at Eastside School who ate, drew and cooked apples as part of their studies. Anyone have a plate showing nine historic Niles sites and the festival logo commemorating the first Apple Festival? The idea was to produce a plate every five years. Niles, Niles Township and Howard Township Lions clubs built a papier mache mascot to ride on their float — 94th in line. The parade climaxed the first festival, the Daily Star reported on Oct. 19, 1973. The Star cost 15 cents and billed itself “Southwest Michigan’s ACTION Newspaper.” Gloria Cooper wrote an entertainment column (with husband Dick providing much of the photography), future Councilwoman Pat Gallagher was on the editorial staff and Ken Klimek staffed Billy Martin’s Detroit Tigers when they made the playoffs.
Apple Festival The parade stepped off at noon from Main and Second streets to permit completion by Severinsen’s 4:30 concert with the Now Generation Brass and Today’s Children. A second show started at 8:30. Governor’s stolen car insured he could walk The parade lineup included 29 bands (including Decatur, Paw Paw, Lakeshore and Webberville) and 23 floats, with Gov. William Milliken as grand marshal. The governor was known for walking in parades rather than riding in cars provided for him, but he had no choice in Niles after his new Lincoln Continental with 500 miles and a loaded shotgun in the trunk was swiped Thursday night from a Lansing garage, according to Michigan State Police. Milliken used the car earlier in the week, but planned to fly to Niles. The state owned the car, which the state police usually drove with Milliken as a passenger. The shotgun was
a standard security measure. The black four-door limousine with license play MSG-000 was in for a tuneup and oil change when the garage owner passed by at night and noticed the door up. The theft occurred between 9 p.m. and midnight. Students at the Sheltered Workshop made red-andwhite bow ties. Ann Sidmore, dressed as a clown, gave Milliken a tie. The parade gathered from Second Street all the way north to Plym Park. It traveled south off Second to Main, east up Main to Oak Street, then east on Oak to Eastgate. A reviewing stand was set up at Main and Seventh streets. There was a juried art show at The Knothole and a flea market and craft show on the central school grounds. Both events began at 10 a.m. and lasted until 5 p.m., sponsored by Psi Iota Xi sorority.
River racing The St. Joseph River was the scene of an Olympic kayak and marathon canoe race. Niles Kayak Club and St. Joseph Valley Canoe and Kayak Club sponsored the exhibition. A preliminary aluminum canoe race started from the Island Park (one of my alltime favorite Niles places) footbridge. Contestants paddled to the Broadway bridge and back. Winners of separate heats participated in a final race. Six fastest finalists earned T-shirts, with the winning team claiming two Clement paddles emblazoned with the Apple Festival emblem. The kayak exhibition ran from 11 a.m. to noon. Kevin Vanderbush of Buchanan and Pete Deyo of Niles won the aluminum canoe race. Marcia Smoke of Buchanan was the victorious senior woman, with Bruce Barton of Horton capturing the men’s kayak contest. Steve Fox and Mike Steven, both of Niles, claimed
September 2013 • 23 the marathon trophy.
Unicyclists won A team of unicyclists from Pontiac directed by Bernard Crandall took home two trophies, the heritage award for adult specialty units and the grand sweepstakes award as best unit in the parade. Scottville’s clown band marched right out of the parade and made a second appearance at the Jaycee beer garden, leading off a twohour show with “How Dry I Am.” The business and industry award was won by Michigan Power’s “SS St. Joseph,” a float replica of a Mississippi riverboat, with second going to First Federal Savings and Loan Association’s float carrying Miss Michigan Sherry Lee Angelo. Jennifer Schwan’s kiddie parade entry, “I Ate the Whole Thing,” won among civic and church entries. “For once,” the Star said, “no one had any complaints about the weather.”
