BOARD A letter from the

T

he City of Four Flags welcomes you to the 43rd annual Niles Apple Festival! Our festival is Thursday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 4. If this is your first time at the festival, you are in for a treat! The town of Niles is a great city filled with friendly people and wonderful businesses. It is evident that we live in such an amazing city, as the past 43 years the Four Flags Apple Festival has been organized by volunteers, including the board of directors. The Apple Festival has also been supported by some awesome sponsors — be sure to thank them for their generous in-kind and monetary donations. Our volunteers and sponsors help make the festival possible! You will enjoy some great things at the festival this year. One of the major highlights to the weekend is our Grand Parade. Get your place early along the parade route, you won’t want to miss out. You will see our festival royalty (including Miss Apple Festival, Jr. Miss Apple Festival, our prince & princess, and senior king and queen), school marching bands, spectacular floats, and a wide variety of community groups. At the festival, you will enjoy arts and crafts, delicious food and, of course some tasty apple treats and Apple Festival souvenirs in our products tent! You will also want to check out our FREE entertainment — remember, there are no reserved seats, so you will want to get a seat when the tent opens an hour before the show starts. Friday night features Sierra Shame. Based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sierra Shame plays a mix of new country, classic rock, and some originals. They are known for their crisp harmonies and high energy stage show. Saturday night features Chris Higbee. Country music is his passion, Chris is the complete country music artist who not only sings, but writes songs and plays the fiddle. His performances are so infectious, he’ll turn non country music fans into the biggest of country fans. After Chris performs on Saturday night, be sure and check out our fireworks, they are some of the best around! Sunday is sure to bring you back to festival, you don’t want to miss out on our Lip Sync contest. Performers of all ages will brighten up your day with a great performance to yesterday’s and today’s hits. You’ll also want to check out our Classic Car show beforehand, just north of the rides. Apple Festival also has some other fun contests and competitions, including the scarecrow contest, apple seed popping, pie eating, log sawing, horseshoes, beard and mustache contest, biggest apple, and the apple pie pastries and cake contest! Of course, what is a festival without some fun rides? Be sure and check out the carnival section of the festival. Rides start on Thursday night and continue throughout the weekend. Wristbands are available for Thursday night and Sunday for $20 and Friday night and Saturday for $25. Check us out at fourflagsapplefestival.org and be sure to “like” us on Facebook for more information. If you have any questions, please call 269-683-8870. Long time volunteer Lolli can answer questions regarding this years festival and how you can volunteer to help with next year’s festival. Apple Festival will be held rain or shine and, remember, no pets please.

Those who know Higbee and have seen him in action describe him as a passionate person who shows his love for music through his performances. The artist is said to have such an infectious spirit of country music he will turn non-country fans into country fans for life. Known for hits like “Barn Party” and “Write to Me,” the Apple Festival board says they expect Higbee to draw a large crowd so people can get a chance to enjoy a good night of music! This free concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the entertainment tent.

King & Queen

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Four Flags Area Apple Festival selected its 2015 Senior King and Queen in the lobby of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA. The Senior King and Queen will be given the royal treatment during their year-long reign by making public appearances, helping with community service projects and riding on the float at many parades. They also each receive a small prize package supplied by the Apple Festival. They will be “officially” crowned during the Miss and Junior Miss Apple Festival Pageant at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Niles High School.

Don Kirkendall and Beth Winquist, Apple Festival King and Qu een 2015

Apple Festival Senior Queen 2015 Beth Winquist was selected via random drawing from a field of six candidates for the 2015 Senior Apple Festival Queen. Beth is a lifelong resident of Niles, where she resides with her husband of 44 years, Tim. They have three daughters and four grandchildren. Beth is employed at the South Bend Clinic where she works in patient accounts. She has volunteered at the YMCA in Niles for years as a swim instructor and used to be the cheerleading coach for Niles High School for seven years in the early 1980s. Beth is a member at Trinity Episcopal Church and enjoys volunteering and being involved in the community. She is happy to add to her family royalty with her recent title. Her granddaughter Meghan was 2012 Fair Queen for the Cass County Fair and also Miss Congeniality for Miss Niles in 2014. Another granddaughter, Lizzie, was 1st Runner Up to Fair Princess for the Cass County Fair in 2014. Beth’s favorite thing to do during Apple Festival is to walk through the Apple Products Tent and see all of the wonderful things made from apples.

Apple Festival Senior King 2015 Don Kirkendall was chosen as the Senior King, selected also via random draw from a field of three. Don is also a lifelong resident of Niles where he lives with his wife of over 50 years, Betty. He and his wife have two children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Don is a veteran of the United States Navy. After the Navy he worked for Tyler for 42 years but his passion is community involvement. Don is the current president for the Niles Haunted House, where he has volunteered for 33 years. He also helped with the Niles High School Band for 33 years and has volunteered with the Niles Senior Center for 14 years. 2015 Four Flags Apple Festival Guide • 15

Troops Support our

Following this year’s theme, “Festival Salutes Our Troops,” floats will be patriotically decorated, and the Apple Festival has been hard at work all year preparing a float that features photographs of veterans from the Michiana area. To help paint the town red, white and blue, event organizers are encouraging everyone to purchase this year’s Apple Festival T-shirts. New this year, a portion of the Apple Festival shirts will benefit a great cause: Local veterans. Shirts will be available for purchase at the Apple Festival grounds throughout the festival.
