FAIR

INFORMATION

President welcomes everyone to the fair

On behalf of the Berrien County Youth Fair Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 68th annual Berrien County Youth Fair, Aug. 12-17. Our theme this year is “Sew It, Grow It, Show It,” and we are excited about making memories and celebrating at this year’s fair! The directors, fair staff, advisors, superintendents, sponsors, and over 1,500 volunteers have worked all year to make this a place to showcase the youth of Berrien County. We want to thank all of the people and businesses that have stepped forward to assist in raising funds for exhibitor premiums. Thanks to all of the people who attended the “Kick It Up” dinner dance and also donated items for the silent auction, and to those who simply donated with the attitude that “it’s all about the kids.” The BCYF, which attracts over 120,000 spectators, is an event for the entire family to attend. Our visitors will find something for everyone to enjoy: over 13,000 exhibits on display exhibited by over 2,500 Berrien County Youth ages 5 through 20, animals, food, rides, over 200 commercial exhibits, entertainment, beautiful flowers and grounds with picnic tables and benches to name just a few. The fair is once again “going green” this year! You’ll see recycling containers located throughout the grounds. In addition, the BCYF has been accepted to the “Green Fair Project,” a 50-percent reimbursement program set up by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee to help promote and demonstrate the benefits of biodiesel and soy based products. You may notice most of our maintenance equipment with biodiesel signs on them; these are the machines using biodiesel fuel. The Berrien County Youth Fair also chose a brochure printer this year that uses soy ink. Check out free attractions, including: a feature of the ‘40’s and ‘50’s in our Historical building; Pirate Island, a FREE interactive show for the entire family; and daily entertainment in our mall area on the Al Barbott Memorial Stage with PA and lighting equipment from Indiana Michigan Power, Cook Nuclear Plant’s “Heart of Cook” grant. The Entertainment Committee is excited about hosting two nights of country music, Jerrod Niemann with special guests The Lost Trailers on Wednesday and Rodney Atkins on Thursday. Don’t forget the other unique entertainment at the Midwest’s Largest Youth Fair, including a truck and tractor pull, bull riding with a special concert guest DeWayne Spaw, and returning this year, motocross! Kids’ Day is Tuesday, with free admission for kids and three free circus shows in the Grandstand. We are expecting a lot of thrill seekers as we again offer one low price each day for rides wristband days, which is every day this year. I hope you will a make a date for your family to come and join in the fun at the 2013 Berrien County Youth Fair. As always you can find great fair food…new this year on the menu are panini’s and 12 varieties of foot long hot dogs!! These all join our other long time fair favorites such as Korn Dogs, Steak Tips, Taffy, Cotton Candy and Lemonade. Bruce Foster, President Berrien County Youth Fair

The fair’s midway is filled with vendors selling food of nearly every variety imaginable. Vendors typically open at 11 a.m. although a select few open for breakfast.

GRANDSTAND

ACTION

heats up Rodney Atkins: Thursday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. Superstar Rodney Atkins will entertain Fairgoers in the covered grandstand on Thursday. With hits such as “Watching You,” “Farmer’s Daughter” and “Take A Back Road,” this Tennessee native has made a name for himself in the country music world. Rodney’s first album debuted in 2003, and since then he has had numerous number one hits. This hardworking artist is not only a phenomenal singer, but he is also patriotic, a countryboy and a family man. He serves as spokesperson for brands such as Massey Ferguson and the National Council for Adoption, a cause dear to his heart as a child of adoption himself. Atkins’ songs are known for being very relatable to any couple or family in modern-day America.

Jerrod Niemann, above, and special guests The Lost Trailers, right, will play at the Grandstands Wednesday Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Rodney Atkins is on the left. Submitted photos

The grandstands lineup gets started with the Truck and Tractor Pull at 7 p.m. Monday evening. The Truck & Tractor Pull will feature Super Farm Tractors, Two Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive Trucks. Ticket price is $10. Those looking for a free tractor show can check out Farm Stock and Garden tractor pull at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 12 in the Grandstand. Then, at noon, a free tractor pull will feature Farm Stock 1960 and older tractors.

Jerrod Niemann with special guests The Lost Trailers: Wednesday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. With hits such as “Holler Back” and “American Beauty” The Lost Trailers w i l l g e t We d n e s d a y night’s concert started. The Lost Trailers began making music together in high school in Georgia. The founding members of the band, Stokes Nielson and Ryder Lee also roomed together at Vanderbilt University and collaborated on a musical interpretation of a series of short stories. Little by little, the band started recruiting the rest of its members. The Lost Trailers got their first big break in 2000 after Stokes gave Willie Nelson a demo, which prompted Nelson to invite the band to play at his annual Fourth of July picnic. The band’s name came after a trailer full of instruments and equipment was stolen their first year together. The name

was meant to be an inside joke, but it started to seem prophetic by the time their third instrument trailer disappeared. The Lost Trailers were recognized by Mediabase as the most played new country band of 2008. To end the Wednesday concert, the Berrien County Youth Fair will host superstar Jerrod Niemann. Although a native of Kansas, Jerrod studied music at South Plains College in Levelland, TX. He moved to Nashville just one month after his 21st birthday. He is known for his

clever wordplay and attention grabbing lyrics. He originally made a name for himself in Music City as a songwriter, co-writing hits for legendary artist Garth Brooks including “Good Ride Cowboy” and “That Girl is a Cowboy.” After making the switch from songwriter to primarily a singer. Jerrod has come out with hits such as “Shinin’ On Me” and “Lover, Lover.” Fans attending the concert are sure to catch a glimpse of Jerrod’s larger than life personality and sense of humor.

Al Barbott Memorial Stage Schedule Located in the center of the fairgrounds is the permanent stage, in memory of Past Fair President, Al Barbott. The stage will provide free entertainment for patrons of all ages. Surrounding the area are numerous park benches and picnic tables, a perfect place to rest and relax during your visit to the Fair. This mall area also features a water fountain/planter donated by Glen & Helen Wade of Wade Shows and a large clock was added to this planter; a special memorial stone dedicated to the first BCYF President – Burton Richards. The mall area serves as the location where we proudly display the American Flag, the State of Michigan Flag, and the BCYF Flag in planters made from the Buy-A-Brick fundraising campaign. This area is brightly lit in the evening by beautiful street lamps donated in memory of John Schadt and Burton Richards. The Mall area also has a 20-foot by 30foot concrete dance floor positioned in front of the stage so visitors can dance to the great music. Memorial contributions from Jim Hopkins Sr., Jim Walter and Russ Widdis helped to construct the dance floor. New this year is the addition of a gazebo in memory of Joe Zahrn. There will be some special entertainment sponsored by Indiana Michigan Power, Cook Nuclear Plant in the mall area on the Al Barbott Memorial stage. PA and lighting equipment was made possible for this stage from Cook Nuclear Plant’s generous “Heart of Cook” grant.
