A message from THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the Berrien County Youth Fair

O

n behalf of the Berrien County Youth Fair Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 70th annual Berrien County Youth Fair, Aug. 17-22. Our theme this year is “Blue Ribbon Bash – Celebrating 70 Years of the BCYF,” and we are excited about making memories and celebrating at this year’s fair! The directors, fair staff, advisors, superintendents, sponsors and more than 1,500 volunteers have worked all year to make this a place to showcase the youth of Berrien County. We want to thank all of the people and businesses that have stepped forward to assist in raising funds for exhibitor premiums. Thanks to all of the people that attended the “Blue Ribbon Bash” dinner dance and also donated items for the silent auction, and to those who simply donated with the attitude that “it’s all about the kids.” The BCYF, which attracts more than 120,000 spectators, is an event for the entire family to attend. Our visitors will find something for everyone to enjoy: over 12,000 exhibits on display exhibited by over 2,000 Berrien County Youth ages 5 through 20, animals, food, rides, over 150 commercial exhibits, entertainment,

beautiful flowers and grounds with picnic tables and benches to name just a few. The fair is once again “going green” this year. You’ll see recycling containers located throughout the grounds. In addition, the BCYF has been accepted to the “Green Fair Project,” a 50 percent reimbursement program set up by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee to help promote and demonstrate the beneBruce Foster fits of biodiesel and soy based products. You may notice most of our maintenance equipment with biodiesel signs on them; these are the machines using biodiesel fuel. The Berrien County Youth Fair also chose a brochure printer this year that uses soy ink. Check out free attractions, including: a Civil War 150th anniversary display in our historical building; Craig Tornquist, a free show for the entire family; and daily entertainment in our mall area on the Al Barbott Memorial Stage with PA and lighting equipment from Indiana Michigan Power, Cook Nuclear Plant’s “Heart of Cook” grant. The entertainment committee is excited

about hosting two nights of country music again, Eric Paslay with special guest Paul Erdman on Wednesday and Vince Gill with special guest Seth Cook on Thursday. Friday night will see the return of Bullmania. Don’t forget the other unique entertainment at the Midwest’s Largest Youth Fair, including a tri-county shootout truck and tractor pull on Monday, and Diesel Domination featuring Indiana Hot Farm Tractors and diesel trucks on Saturday! Kids’ Day is Tuesday, with free admission for kids and three free circus shows

in the grandstand. We are expecting a lot of thrill seekers as we again offer one low price each day for rides wristband days, which is every day this year. I hope you will a make a date for your family to come and join in the fun at the 2015 Berrien County Youth Fair. As always you can find great fair food including just a few of our long time fair favorites such as corn dogs, steak tips, taffy, cotton candy and lemonade.

CIVIL WAR 150 years later Fair looks at SW Michigan, America’s deadliest war By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com

T

o commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War, the Berrien County Youth Fair will take an in-depth look at the war’s impact on southwest Michigan and how this area’s own men and women contributed to the fight. A display dedicated to the Civil War will be housed inside the fair ’s historical building, which is located on the north side of the fairgrounds near the gate 1 entrance. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 17 through Aug. 22. “Berrien County was very active in the Civil War, so this (commemoration) was of great interest to us,” said Linda Shinsky, director of the Civil War historical display. “There are families in our area that are

direct descendants from soldiers in the Civil War — some people still have Civil War memorabilia.” The display is being offered in partnership with the Niles History Center (Niles, Michigan) and the Civil War Round Table of Southwest Michigan. Cindy Benson, of the Niles History Center, said the display would contain a lot of in-

formation about how Niles and its people impacted the war. For instance, there will be a display on Niles surgeon Dr. Evan J. Bonine, who served as division surgeon for the Third Division of the Ninth Army Corps. Shinsky said a representative from the Civil War Round Table of Southwest Michigan will speak on a different topic each night at 6 p.m. The Civil War Round Table of Southwest Michigan is an educational and historical group focused on the American Civil War. It was founded in September of 2013.

THIS YEAR’S HEADLINERS Country star Vince Gill is featured guest By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak@leaderpub.com

W

ith more than 25 years of creating hit records, Vince Gill is showing no signs of slowing

down. The two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year — who has sold more than 26 million albums, won 20 Grammy awards and won 18 CMA awards — will bring his tour to the Berrien County Youth Fair Aug. 20. Gill is not only one of country music’s all-time great singers, having tied George Straight with five consecutive CMA Male Vocalist of the Year honors, he is a gifted musician. Both will be on display when he hits the stage to perform. Gill’s latest album, “Bakersfield,” is a tribute to Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and showcases both Gill’s vocals and musicianship. The album was released in 2013 and has five songs from each legendary artist. The album also showcases the “Bakersfield” sound and is a tribute to those musicians who played with Owens and Haggard. “It was a blast to make,” Gill said. “Not only did we get to honor Buck and Merle with those songs, but we got to honor so many of those great musicians like Don Rich, who played with Buck Owens, and Tom Brumley, who played with Buck Owens. Then you have Ralph Mooney, who played on a lot of Merle records. James Burton, great musicians that made some of those records what they were. “What was fun to learn was I think we turned a lot of young people on to music they may not have known much about. I think that is really the bonus. I think that anybody that really liked that kind of music was going to like the album. That was a given. To get a 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I really didn’t know what any of this stuff was,’ and it turned a light on for him was great.” Gill’s tour will make stops in Colorado and Idaho before making a west Michigan swing with performances in Interlochen the night before and in Grand Rapids the night after the Berrien County Youth Fair stop. Gill said the tour is going great and the crowd in Colorado Springs Aug. 5 was one of the best he has had in awhile. “We had a killer crowd,” Gill said. “The best crowd I have played for in years. I had a ball. It is still fun. It is still great to get out and play music in

Eric Paslay plays Aug. 19

B

front of people.” Gill said that balancing the songs fans come to hear with the new music is important. “You try to realize that people come to see you because they want to hear things that are familiar to them,” he said. “If you lose sight of that, then you lose sight of why your fans come to see you. So I try to do all the songs that are popular, like “When I Call Your Name,” “I Still Believe In You,” “Look At Us.” Those songs are kind of the staples that you need to do and then you balance them out. I have done four of five things from the “Bakersfield” album and that is always fun because people say hey, ‘you are doing a bunch of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens songs.’ “It makes for a fun night. You can’t do everything that is unfamiliar to the crowd because I don’t think they will

have as good a time. I think familiarity is key to having a good night with folks.” Gill said that playing large venues and more intimate ones like at a county fair both have their plus and minuses. “I don’t play the big places anymore,” he said. “The smaller places are always more intimate and as a musician that feels really good when you get the response from somebody. I always thought that playing music for people was like having a conversation. I am playing and singing and they respond by liking it or not liking it and that is how the conversation goes. Fans can have that conversation with Gill Aug. 20 as tickets are still available for his 7 p.m. show, which opens with special guest Seth Cook. For more information, go to www. bcyf.com.

orn in Abilene, Texas, and raised in Waco and Temple, Eric Paslay has always loved music. He began playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 15. By the time he was 16 he had made a homemade CD of songs he played around Texas. Even though he takes after his granddad with his love for music, Eric’s original intent was to become a pediatric endocrinologist so he could help and relate with kids with diabetes, which the artist suffers from himself. Ultimately, Eric moved to Nashville to pursue his music career. He majored in music business at Middle Tennessee State University. While learning the publishing business and the craft of songwriting during his internship with Cal IV Entertainment, he landed his own deal with Cal IV in 2006 and gained enough attention from record labels that he soon signed with EMI Records in Nashville. Eric loves to entertain and says the reason he began writing songs is that he wanted to sing them for people. The singer said he has always dreamed of having a song the audience knows and will sing back to the artist at a show, and fair organizers think he is sure to have his wish come true when he performs songs such as “Friday Night,” “Song About A Girl and “She Don’t Love You” at the Berrien County Youth Fair on Aug. 19. To begin the Wednesday concert, the Berrien County Youth Fair will host South Bend’s Americana artist Paul Erdman. Paul draws a lot of influence from American roots music. He has a background firmly planted in blues and jazz and found the folksy country songwriting style really lit a fire inside him for telling stories through song.

Remembering fair leaders Free entertainment offered in memory of past president

L

eaders of the Berrien County Youth Fair are cherished members of the fair family and, each year, former leaders are honored. In honor of these volunteers who dedicated so much of their time to the fair, memorials have been erected to provide comfort and entertainment for all who attend. Visitors can take advantage of free entertainment in memory of one fair leader, as located in the center of the fairgrounds is a permanent stage, in memory of Past Fair President Al Barbott. Surrounding the area are numerous park benches and picnic tables, which fair organizers believe are the perfect place to rest and relax during a visit to the fair. This mall area also features a water fountain/planter donated by Glen & Helen Wade of Wade Shows and a large clock was added to this planter; a special memorial stone dedicated to the first BCYF president, Burton Richards. This area is brightly lit in the evening by street lamps donated in memory of John Schadt and Burton Richards. In front of the mall area is a 20x30-foot concrete dance floor so visitors can dance along to musical entertainment. Memorial contributions from Jim Hopkins, Sr., Jim Walter and Russ Widdis helped to construct the dance floor. Also in the mall area is a gazebo in memory of Joe Zahrn.
