f you are new to the region, you might have picked up this guide and wondered, “Wait, where am I?” Don’t worry. You aren’t lost. As legend tells it, “Michiana” is a term coined some 80 years ago when the Associated South Bend Merchants, attempting to showcase all the commercial opportunities in the area, hosted a contest to name the region where southwest Michigan and northern Indiana meet. Although that organization is long gone, the name stuck and the moniker has done wonders for growing the diverse region that Michiana is today. Thanks to that diversity, we believe that whether you are just traveling through or you have lived here your entire life, there is no shortage of adventure within just a short car ride from wherever you are reading this. Looking for the beach? We’ve got you covered. Our “Lakeside” section showcases a long list of attractions, restaurants and fun facts about the many Michiana communities that line Lake Michigan. Flip to pages 13 to 20. Perhaps you have ventured into the area for a quiet weekend immersed in small-town charm. Inland Berrien County (pages 22 to 28) has just what you are looking for. Check out some of the many wineries, breweries and other attractions while you are out and about.

If you’re looking to travel back in time or enjoy the great outdoors, hop on the highway and head east to Cass County (pages 30 to 34). In addition to its agricultural offerings, this rural region is dedicated to showcasing the region’s history in museums and at various festivals throughout the year. If you want to get out on the town or spend a day shopping, head south of the state line to Irish country. In addition to being home of Notre Dame University, northern Indiana (pages 35 to 38) is full of locally owned businesses and national chains, as well as plenty of nightlife. In the back half of this guide, you’ll find detailed listings of outdoor opportunities like parks and campgrounds, cultural opportunities like theaters and art galleries and a guide to places for those 21 and older to taste local wine, beer and spirits. Whether you are in town for a day, planning a relocation or are a resident simply looking to satisfy your wanderlust, Explore Michiana should help you find a place you’ve never seen, an activity you’ve never tried or a food you’ve never tasted/ It’s all waiting for you. What are you waiting for? Thanks so much for joining us in Michiana. We’re glad you found your way here.

History

C

onnected by the St. Joseph River and the bodies of water extending from it, the communities that make up Michiana have deep roots in American history. Long before the region even had a formal name, records show Native Americans were the first to settle in what would become southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, likely because of the fertile ground along the river and near Lake Michigan. Today, the Potawatomi, who were among the first tribes to live in the region, are still very prominent in the area, each year giving back millions of dollars in revenue and donations earned at the tribe’s Four Winds Casinos. In the late 1800s, as Europeans were exploring the United States, they set up forts and camps along the same river that the natives had relied on for centuries. Outposts such as Fort St. Joseph in present-day Niles, Michigan, were used to house Jesuit missionaries and militia in the Spanish-American and Revolutionary Wars. After the conflicts, descendants of those who fought settled in the area, creating the diverse culture that is reflective of the melting pot for which the United States is known. As these settlers and others migrated to the Michiana area, the Joseph Bertrand Trading Post in present-day St. Joseph, Michigan, set the ball rolling for a prospering economy. Farther south, in South Bend, Indiana, the American Fur Company was created, drawing settlers from all over the colonial United States to what is now St. Joseph County, Indiana. Spanning between the two industrial bookends of the region, farmers from southern Indiana and Ohio traveled to the area to take advantage of the fertile land. The Michiana fruit belt continues to produce some of the nation’s best strawberries, apples, grapes and peaches. Southwest Michigan and northern Indiana are known for sweet corn and asparagus, all of which are highly-coveted by both Michiana residents and out-of-towners. As time progressed, more Michiana communities began to place an emphasis on industrial growth, building factories and other institutions. Jobs created by large companies like the Studebaker Corporation and the Oliver Chilled Plow Company attracted tens of thousands to the South Bend area and the bedroom communities surrounding it. In the late 19th Century, as the railroad extended into the Michiana area, more jobs were created and settlers were able to travel to the area more quickly. Eventually, many communities in Michiana would serve as stops on the Underground Railroad, helping escaped slaves from the south make their way to freedom. Those who call the diverse communities that make up Michiana home remain extremely proud of their heritage and celebrate it with museum exhibits, festivals and other events, understanding that those who came before them have laid the foundation for the present, and an even brighter future to come. ith educational opportunities as abundant and diverse as the communities in the region, there is no shortage of places to learn in Michiana. Ranging from preschool to PhD programs, the area is home to more than 20 public school systems, at least a dozen private schools, three colleges, several technical schools, a handful of extension campuses for state universities and, perhaps one of the biggest attractions in the Michiana area, the University of Notre Dame. At the grade-school level, children are automatically considered students at the district in which they reside. Parents can allow their children to attend any school in the state they live in, thanks to the School of Choice option. Students who live in Indiana but choose to attend school in Michigan (or vice versa) may do so by paying tuition at his or her school of choice, just as they would at a private school. Several public schools in the region offer unique opportunities for students, including Montessori schools, project-based learning facilities, adult education opportunities, accelerated learning programs at area colleges and the ability to earn college credits while attending high school. In fact, it is not uncommon for students attending public schools in Michiana to graduate with associate’s degrees or a significant number of credits toward their bachelor’s degrees. Students interested in continuing their education after school can do so locally at a number of colleges and universities in the area. Schools range in size from technical colleges like ITT Technical Institute in South Bend to large universities like Notre Dame.

Bethel College bethelcollege.edu Brown Mackie College brownmackie.edu Davenport University davenport.edu Holy Cross holycross.edu

Students can also opt to begin their postsecondary education at any of the area’s community colleges — Southwestern Michigan College, Lake Michigan College or Ivy Tech — and transfer to a four-year college. Students can even earn a bachelor’s degree without ever leaving the community college campus. Michiana also offers a number of four-year colleges and universities, which draw students from all over the world, including Notre Dame, Andrews University, Bethel College, St. Mary’s College, Holy Cross College, Indiana University South Bend and Davenport University. Colleges of all types offer on-campus learning, meal plans, part- and full-time education, online courses, extra-curricular activities and clubs, athletics and a large variety of programs and courses. All these resources combine to create a region rich with educational opportunities.

Beckwith, who was a champion of the arts. His family built the Beckwith Memorial Building and Theater in his honor, which served as a destination for live theater until its demolition in 1968. Although located in a different building, the city’s Beckwith Theatre Company carries on that legacy to this day. Four Winds Dowagiac 58700 M-51 (866) 494-6371 fourwindscasino.com/dowagiac/

n southwest Michigan you can choose from several state parks like Grand Mere Park in Stevensville and Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer. Not to be out done, Berrien and Cass County have an abundance of parks like Madeline Bertrand Park in Niles, Silver Beach in St. Joseph and Dr. T.K. Lawless Park in Vandalia. “Probably first and foremost, we have one of the top-rated mountain bike trails in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana at Lawless Park,” Scott Wyman, director of Parks in Cass County said. “That’s 10 miles. It has probably been there the longest having been there about 20 years. It is a good mixture of rolling hills and switchbacks. It is good for both the novice and the intermediate.” Wyman said that the county has a good relationship with the Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association. “It is what they call one of their home tracks,” he said. “They help maintain it. I would say they do 80 percent of the maintenance on it. It is one of the most popular activities we have in the summer time.” For the kayakers or canoers, Arthur Dodd Park is where most people put in for a trip down the Dowagiac River. Improvements, thanks to a DNR grant, to Dodd Park will make it even more user friendly for both boaters and fishermen. Cass County is also the home of a county-run equestrian facility in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. “We allow horseback riding at Fred Russ Forest Park,” Wyman said. “There are three miles we lease from Michigan State University and there is probably

another five to eight miles of trails that Michigan State keeps clear as well. We like to think there is something for everyone.” St. Patrick’s Park in St. Joseph County (Indiana) is also popular with canoe and kayakers. The season opens in late May and continues through early October. There is also disc golf at both St. Patrick’s Park and Madeline Bertrand Park in Niles. And then there is the music. The Fischgrund Center for Performing Arts at St. Patrick’s Park is a site for outdoor concerts. “Our parks are very beautiful and have many family-oriented activities,” KC Nieboer, leisure services supervisor for St. Joseph County Parks, said. “We also have many shelters and areas which make a lovely setting for weddings as well as family or company picnics.” In Berrien County, all the parks offer different recreation opportunities, according to Brian Bailey, parks director. “All of the county parks — be it the Galien River, Love Creek, Madeline Bertrand, Rocky Gap, Silver Beach and the History Center at Courthouse Square in Berrien Springs — all are different and unique,” he said. “There is something for everybody at our county parks.” One of the hot spots is the 18-hole disc golf course at Madeline Bertrand. “It is one of the most popular disc golf courses in the region,” Bailey said. “The hiking and biking trails at our parks are also very popular.”

Sculpting a better

community By TED YOAKUM

f there is one thing that residents of the Michiana area know, it is that not every work of art belongs in a gallery or museum. Several cities and villages in the region have embraced the simple beauty and sophistication that pieces of public art can bring to their community — as well as the added attention it brings from tourists. From the assortment of different statues dotting the streets in Harbor Country to the rotating themes of St. Joseph’s seasonal collection of downtown artwork, public art has become an essential piece of the fabric that comprise many regions in Michiana. Dowagiac is one such city that has become characterized by its statues and sculptures. In the midst of the city’s transformation of its historic downtown district in the mid-1990s, long time Dowagiac resident Thelda Mathews, a prominent supporter of the arts, sought to use a piece of public art to further enhance the aesthetics of the area. Seeking out the assistance of Michiana sculptor Tuck Langland, she worked to get a piece of public art erected in time for the 1995 Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, the city’s annual springtime celebration of the humanities, said Dogwood Festival Secretary Bobbie Jo Hartline. “She wanted something that spoke to our community,” Hartline said. “She wanted to make sure it was special, and placed in a special place.”

Tours and tastings offer visitors an up close and personal look at the area’s wide variety of alcoholic beverage purveyors, often located within a few miles of each other and beautiful Lake Michigan. The area is perfect for day trips, weekend outings or weeklong adventures. Doug Oberst, owner of 12 Corners Winery, said they get at least 50,000 visitors during the warm weather tourist season between their tasting rooms in Benton Harbor, Grand Haven and South Haven. 12 Corners is one of the area’s many estate wineries, meaning they grow and use their own grapes when making wine. “We have a climate that allows us to grow more grapes than other parts of the Midwest,” Oberst said. “And we are so conveniently located to the beaches that people can make a nice day out of it. It is a big tourist area to begin with in southwest Michigan. As each year passes we are more acclimated to the tourist trade. There are more restaurants and everything else that supports tourism.” 12 Corners offer tastings, vineyard tours, weekend events and an event room called the Riverstone Room that can be rented free if you are a registered nonprofit organization.
