Art & Wine Festival (Berrien Springs) — Taking place at Domaine Berrien Cellars, 398 E. Lemon Creek Road, Berrien Springs, this weekend festival is a two-day celebration of regional art, music, food and wine. Wine in hand, visitors will be able to explore different forms of art from pottery to painting, stained glass and more.

Bluegrass Festival (Niles) — Those who love the strum of a steel guitar will enjoy the Niles Bluegrass Festival at Riverfront Park, 310 Water St., Niles. In addition to showcasing regional and nationally known bluegrass artists, the three-day festival features a Kid Zone, where there will be rides, fair food and a petting zoo.

Sunburst Races (South Bend) — Run for a cause at the annual Sunburst Races, starting at Four Winds Field in South Bend. At one of the largest races in Michiana, people of varying athletic levels can participate in everything from a 5K race to a half marathon. Proceeds benefit Beacon Children’s Hospital.

Leeper Park Art Fair (South Bend) — Sponsored by the St. Joe Valley Watercolor Society, this two-day fair in South Bend’s Leeper Park draws more than 1,000 artists from all across the country to sell their work.

Live music and food vendors will accompany the fair, which has been continuously recognized as one of the best of its kind in the nation.

St. Joseph County 4-H Fair (South Bend) — From livestock showings and carnival rides to live music and monster truck rallies, visiting families will have a week’s worth of entertainment to choose from as the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair returns June 28 to July 6. The fair will take place at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds, 5117 Ironwood Road, South Bend.

Pioneer Days (Cassopolis) — Broadway Street in downtown Cassopolis will come to life during its annual Pioneer Days Festival.

The event will feature street vendors, artists, food vendors, a beer garden, live music, a talent competition and a corn hole tournament.

There will also be a kids’ zone complete with bounce houses, a rock climbing wall and a dunk tank.

Thrill on the Hill (Buchanan) — Just in time for the hottest days of the summer, Buchanan offers an epic way to cool off.

Grab an inner tube and slip and slide down Front Street, which is closed down for a giant water slide through town. Between slides, enjoy food, games, live music, duck races and more. Find Buchanan’s Thrill on the Hill on Facebook for updates.

Vintage Blues Bash (Berrien Springs) — Lemon Creek Winery’s Vintage Blues Bash is an afternoon of nonstop summer fun. With live blues music, dancing, food and wine tasting, the event is every wine lover’s ideal summer party. The event is hosted at Lemon Creek Winery, which is at 533 E. Lemon Creek Road, Berrien Springs.

Berrien County Youth Fair (Berrien Springs) — From youth 4-H showings from around the county to rides that are sure to thrill, there is something for everyone at the Berrien County Youth Fair. For the adults, The Eli Young Band will return to perform at the Grandstand. The fairgrounds are located at 9122 U.S. 31, Berrien Springs.

Lake Bluff Artisan Fair (St. Joseph) — This annual outdoor art fair features handcrafted goods such as home goods, clothing, jewelry, soaps and candles. Taking place in St. Joseph’s Lake Bluff Park, 301 State St., the event offers serene lakeside views for shoppers as they wade through the variety of vendors with Lake Michigan serving as the backdrop.

Best. Week. Ever. (South Bend) — Celebrate all things South Bend during a week-long festival titled Best. Week. Ever. Events range from fireworks shows and baseball games to art festivals and game nights. Check out the Taste of Michiana to try food from restaurants from all over the greater South Bend area. Michiana Greek Festival (South Bend) — Michiana Greek Festival is a celebration of the beauty and hospitality of Greece.

Taking place at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 Ironwood Road, South Bend, visitors will be able to sample authentic, tasty treats, experience cultural exhibits and traditional dances, play games and shop.

Redbud Motocross Championships (Buchanan) — Tucked away in the small town of Buchanan is one of the country’s best-known motocross tracks: Redbud. The trail is the centerpiece of the Lucas Oil Motocross Championship every year during July 4 weekend, which true motocross fans shouldn’t miss out on. Redbud is located at 13638 Red Bud Trail N., Buchanan.

Summer in the City (Dowagiac) — Visitors to Dowagiac this June can enjoy more than 50 hours of entertainment at its annual Summer in the City festival. The family-friendly event, taking place on Front Street in downtown Dowagiac, will feature live music, sidewalk sales, community-wide worship service and a taste of Dowagiac’s culinary scene.

Cass County 4-H Fair (Cassopolis) — Cass County youth show off a year’s worth of hard work with livestock, produce, arts and crafts and various other projects at the Cass County Fair, located at 590 N. O’Keefe St., Cassopolis.

In addition to 4-H activities, the fair features a parade, rodeo, demolition derby, tractor pull, rides, games, live music and more.

Four Flags Area Apple Festival (Niles) — Niles’ Four Flags Apple Festival is a celebration of all things apple, from cider to donuts to pies and cakes. Be sure to check out some of the festival’s more unique attractions like the Miss Apple Festival Pageant, the log cutting contest or the pie eating contest.

The fairgrounds are located at 1740 Lake St., Niles.

Chapel Hill Arts & Crafts Show (Berrien Springs) — More than 280 juried exhibitors will be featured in the largest craft fair in Michiana at the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds at 9122 Old U.S. 31, Berrien Springs. The event is hosted by Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, which donates the proceeds of the event to area missions.

Hunter Ice Festival (Niles) — Prepare to “ooh” and “ahh” at the magnificent ice sculptures that will line the sidewalks of downtown Niles during the annual Hunter Ice Festival. In addition to the sculptures, the event features many attractions including an ice cream booth and Frigid 5K. If you get too cold, warm up with the event’s annual chili crawl.

C

onnected by the St. Joseph River and the bodies of water extending from it, the communities that make up Michiana have deep roots in American history.

Long before the region even had a formal name, records show that Native Americans were the first to settle in what would become southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, likely because of the fertile ground along the river and near Lake Michigan. Today, the Potawatomi, who were among the first tribes to live in the region, are still very prominent in the area, each year giving back millions of dollars in revenue and donations earned at the tribe’s Four Winds Casinos.

In the late 1800s, as Europeans were exploring the United States, they set up forts and camps along the same river that the natives had relied on for centuries. Outposts such as Fort St. Joseph in present-day Niles, Michigan, were used to house Jesuit missionaries and militia in the Spanish-American and Revolutionary Wars. After the wars, descendants of those who fought decided to settle in the area, creating the diverse culture that is reflective of the melting pot for which the United States is known.

As these settlers and others migrated to the Michiana area, the Joseph Bertrand Trading Post in present-day St. Joseph, Michigan, set the ball rolling for a prospering economy.

Farther south, in South Bend, Indiana, the American Fur Company was created, drawing settlers from all over the colonial United States to what is now St. Joseph County, Indiana. Spanning

between the two industrial bookends of the region, farmers from southern Indiana and Ohio traveled to the area to take advantage of the fertile land.

The Michiana fruit belt continues to produce some of the nation’s best strawberries, apples, grapes and peaches.

Southwest Michigan and northern Indiana are known for sweet corn and asparagus, all of which are highlycoveted by both Michiana residents and out-of-towners.

As time progressed, more Michiana communities began to place an emphasis on industrial possibilities, building factories and other institutions. Jobs created by large companies like the Studebaker Corporation and the Oliver Chilled Plow Company attracted tens of thousands to the South Bend area and the bedroom communities surrounding it.

In the late 19th Century, as the railroad extended into the Michiana area, even more jobs were created and settlers were able to travel to the area more quickly. Eventually, many communities in Michiana would serve as stops on the Underground Railroad, passing escaped slaves from the south through buried tunnels into freedom.

Those who call the diverse communities that make up Michiana home remain extremely proud of their heritage and celebrate it with festivals, museum exhibits and other events, understanding that those who came before them have laid the foundation for the present, and an even brighter future to come.

ichigan’s Great Lakes draw folks from all over the world every year to take advantage of freshwater beaches, gorgeous sunsets, water sports, hiking and more. While visiting, though, Lake Michigan visitors find much more than sandy shorelines and colored skies.

Lake Michigan’s coast is surrounded by beautiful beach towns — many of which thrive all year long. The southernmost portion of Lake Michigan is made up of Harbor Country’s eight towns.

New Buffalo, the cornerstone of Harbor Country, features several beaches, including one that sits at the end of downtown New Buffalo. The downtown district features several small shops and eateries — perfect for cooling off after a day in the sun. Down the road, Four Winds Casino offers gambling, dining and a concert venue that hosts comedians and musicians of all genres.

South of New Buffalo, Grand Beach and Michiana (the village) are resort towns that house summer residents from Chicago. North of New Buffalo, Union Pier and Lakeside are popular destinations for family vacations, and Harbert draws art enthusiasts from all over the region.

Sawyer, home to Warren Dunes State Park, features what the locals refer to as “Tower Hill” — large sand dunes perfect for hiking and taking in sunsets. In town, try nationally famous Greenbush beer, headquartered in Sawyer.

Bridgman, Michigan is home to Weko Beach, which hosts popular beer and wine festivals each year, and features several shops, restaurants and breweries.

Up the coast, the cities of St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and Stevensville each offer their own charms. St. Joseph’s iconic lighthouse and Silver Beach anchor the area. Benton Harbor, St. Joe’s sister city, has a vibrant arts district.

Stevensville, a farm community, is home to a number of wineries. Each of these three communities are home to popular restaurants, lodging facilities and quaint downtowns with shops for all interests.

M

ichigan is the holy grail of freshwater beaches and, thanks to the Great Lakes, the state has more coastline than any other in the continental United States. That’s why when it comes to summertime in Michiana, there’s almost no place I would rather be than to by Lake Michigan with my toes in the sand.

There are a number of different beaches in the area, and each offers its own attractions and are all great in their own way.

Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer Almost everyone I know has been to Warren Dunes, but not all of them have taken advantage of everything this beach has to offer. The beach is often referred to as “Tower Hill” for a reason. There are a number of places to hike and explore in the area — even after you run up and down the dune a few times. One place that everyone needs to check out is the clay pits. It is a great spot to get a little dirty, while exploring more than just the water and sand.

Grand Mere Beach in Stevensville If you’re looking for a place to relax this summer then I would advise you to look no further than Grand Mere Beach. Most people have at least heard of the beach due to it being the namesake of the Grand Mere Inn restaurant. The beach is located within a 985acre state park, so it’s much less populated than highly trafficked beaches like Silver Beach in St. Joseph, but its beauty is just as spectacular.

Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor Located just north of St. Joseph, Jean Klock Park isn’t as popular as some other Michiana

beaches, but I would say it’s just as well kept as any other beach in the area. The park has a paved parking lot, a boardwalk, volleyball courts, a bathhouse, a playground and a concession area — pretty much everything I need when I visit a beach. If you’re in the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area, I would recommend checking this spot out.

Weko Beach in Bridgman Weko beach is also a campground located right next to Lake Michigan. It provides a super cheap way for me and a few friends to spend a weekend (or longer) at the beach.

According to the city of Bridgman’s website, it only cost $45 to $60 per night to rent one of the campground cabins, which sleeps six,

or you can pitch a tent and sleep in it for between $25 and $35 per night, depending on your location within the park and the time of year.

New Buffalo City Beach in New Buffalo After visiting New Buffalo a few times, I quickly realized that much of the beachfront property in the area can only be accessed via private land. Luckily, New Buffalo City Beach is such a great spot that it makes up for the lack of access elsewhere. The beach has a rock path that stretches through the water off of the shore, and the city also provides a kayak concession stand for anyone who wants to rent a kayak or a paddleboard.

ust a hop, skip and a jump from Lake Michigan, inland Berrien County is full of fruitful farmlands, wineries, parks, rivers, inland lakes and other amenities perfect for families.

Just east of the lake, Three Oaks, Michigan is home to Journeyman Distillery, a nationally known maker of spirits. The downtown district has all the charm of a modernized 1950s movie set, featuring several popular restaurants, live theater and an independent movie theater.

Farther east, Buchanan is home to Redbud Motor Speedway, which hosts the Redbud MX Nationals each year. On the state line, Niles is home to the Niles Haunted House Scream Park, the Four Flags Area Apple Festival, several historic landmarks and two public school districts.

Berrien Springs is home to several local farms, wineries and distilleries. Berrien County’s original county seat (from 18371894) is home to the Berrien County Fairgrounds and Andrews University, which draws students from all over the globe.

Sister cities Coloma and Watervliet are nestled in the middle of southwest Michigan’s fruit belt, home to peach, grape and apple farms, among others. Also part of the fruit belt, Eau Claire is a popular tourist destination and home to the Cherry Festival.

Berrien County communities are all rich in history and art, and abundant with attractions for all ages. During those busy summer months when it seems impossible to find a place to stay right on the lake, inland Berrien County offers great lodging and activities for the whole family.

A

lthough not on the coast, many would argue that Cass County is a land full of water. Home to 24 inland lakes, the area attracts fishermen, water sports enthusiasts and vacationers in the summer months.

Cassopolis, the county seat, is a village rich in agriculture, hosting one of the most popular Future Farmers of America chapters in the region, as well as the Cass County Fair. Along with its sister village of Vandalia, Cass County is proud of its roots as part of the Underground Railroad, and hosts annual events to celebrate the history of this monumental event.

Dowagiac, Cass County’s only city, is also rich in history. Home to the Beckwith Stove Company and Heddon Fishing Lures, artifacts of the two industries can be found all over the Grand Old City.

Dowagiac’s colorful downtown is filled with popular restaurants, and neighboring lakeside communities such as Sister Lakes are home to vibrant restaurants and breweries, such as Sister Lakes Brewing Company.

Neighboring Cassopolis, the Village of Edwardsburg boasts one of the largest school of choice rates in the region, as students from surrounding communities opt to be Eddies to take advantage of special academic programs.

The east side of Niles also resides in Cass County, including Barron Lake, a popular lakefront community.

Cass County contains a variety of beautiful parks, including Russ Forest, T.K. Lawless Park, Arthur Dodd Park and Henry Sears Park.

With dozens of lakes and waterways, Cass County is a destination for fishing and other water sports like boating, paddle boarding, water skiing, kayaking, tubing and more. Many family campgrounds and summer camps can be found along these waterways.

Cass County is also home to several lakeside communities, in which a large portion of residents are seasonal. These include Twin Lakes, Dewey Lake, Magician Lake, Stone Lake, Diamond Lake, Juno Lake, Eagle Lake and Barron Lake, among others.

Cass County has deep roots in the Underground Railroad, as is documented at Vandalia’s historic Bonine House. History buffs will also enjoy downtown Cassopolis’ 95-year-old Pioneer Log Cabin Museum, several murals paying homage to the past, and the historic Cass County Courthouse.

The iconic University of Notre Dame sits in the heart of South Bend. Though famous for its football program, Notre Dame also features popular basketball, hockey and volleyball programs, a gorgeous campus perfect for a bike ride, and visual and performance art open to the public.

Notre Dame’s campus is surrounded by neighboring institutions, including Bethel College, Holy Cross, Saint Mary’s College and Indiana University of South Bend.

heer, cheer for old Notre Dame!” can be heard all year long throughout South Bend, as the home of the Golden Dome welcomes visitors from all over the area during athletic events and other celebrations.

The land of the Irish anchors northwest Indiana, a bustling semi-metropolitan area chocked full of all sorts of dining, entertainment and shopping options.

Down the road from the university, downtown South Bend has sprung to life in recent years, creating a hopping entertainment scene perfect for visitors and residents alike. Check out Fiddler’s Hearth to get in the Irish spirit, or visit any number of businesses in Eddie Street Commons, right on Notre Dame’s campus.

South Bend is also home to the Morris Performing Arts Center, which hosts big names in music, comedy and theater all year long.

Down the road in Mishawaka, University Park Mall is an epicenter for shopping that draws people from all over Michiana.

Along Grape Road, national franchises and locally owned businesses alike offer a little bit of everything in the way of dining and shopping.

Just south of the state line, Granger is a suburban community that blends with Mishawaka. Find Heritage Square Shopping Center and apartments in this community, as well as a number of popular churches.

McCoy’s Creek Trail Buchanan, Michigan In the 1820s, the Rev. Isaac McCoy fished in a little creek now named after him. By the end of that century, 13 mills had been installed along the creek to add energy to the town. Today, runners, bikers and nature enthusiasts can enjoy the paved path beginning near the buck

sculpture in downtown Buchanan.

Maintained by the Friends of McCoy’s Creek Trail, the path is the setting for multiple community events throughout the year, including Trek or Treat around Halloween, and the McCoy’s Creek Trail 5K in the fall.

amilies looking to get outside for some affordable family fun will find a robust number of opportunities from frozen treats to chances to explore southwest Michigan’s woods and lake shores.

Here’s a compilation of a few things families can do in Michiana.

Silver Beach Carousel There’s no question that Silver Beach in St. Joseph offers families a variety of activities. While soaking up some sunshine on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan is a must, families can also make memories riding the Silver Beach Carousel.

This colorful carousel features more than 40 hand-carved horses to ride on and thousands of twinkling lights. The carousel first opened in 1910.

Every Thursday, the Silver Beach Carousel offers a Family Fun event from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Those who attend can take part in games and create make-and-take crafts. Throughout the year a variety of familyfriendly activities are planned.

South Bend Chocolate Company factory tours When learning and chocolate are combined, it is apt to appeal to people of all ages.

People can dip a spoon in chocolate to enjoy along the way, while they learn about the business of crafting candy inside this 58,000-square-foot production facility.

Several tours take place throughout the day and show people the process of chocolate and its history. The tour also includes a host of chocolate memorabilia, including a 1,300-year old Mayan chocolate pot and a collection of chocolate tins and containers.

Tours take place at the top of the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Those looking to simply indulge in chocolate treats can visit the South Bend Chocolate Café at 122 S. Michigan St. in South Bend. The company also has locations in the South Bend Airport and in downtown St. Joseph, among other places.

Soon, Michiana residents will have the opportunity to visit a dinosaur museum in South Bend, as South Bend Chocolate owner Mark Tarner recently broke ground on a new facility.

The garden is open year-round, so there is always a new plant or animal species to observe from falling leaves to budding trees. More than a dozen different gardens offer explorers a chance to observe the new plants and animal species that inhabit southwest Michigan.

A train garden, where a toy engine softly chugs through a lush landscape and carefully crafted historical replicas, is a popular destination for young children.

The garden and nature preserve also offers a number of classes and crafty activities like yoga, bird watching or learning how to grow an herb garden.

With a new Education Center, even more activities and chances to learn about the natural environment of

southwest Michigan are now available.

Elaine Rowland, the development and community engagement manager for Fernwood, said spring is a particularly special time at the garden.

“Fernwood is a wonderful place to visit all year long, but summertime is special because of the colors in the gardens, nature preserve, arboretum and prairie,” Rowland said. “In the summer, Fernwood is a great place to take a stroll or participate in one of the many activities available including art and nature camps, concerts and classes for all ages.”

Guests can see birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates from all over the world — right here in South Bend.

Area children can participate in zoo camps throughout the summer, and visitors of all ages can take advantage of zoo related events such as Endangered Species Day and World Oceans Day. Cost is $8 per child ages 3 to 14, and $10 for adults.

Exhibits include a play farmers market, veterinary clinic, volcano slide, kids’ space, face paint, and toddle farm, among many others. Curious Kids Museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year, as well as workshops and camps throughout the summer months.

After they finish at the museum, families can continue the fun at Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone, just a few steps away at 333 Broad St. Discovery Zone includes several exhibits, including the Lake Michigan Water Table, a kids’ climbing wall, a Lighthouse Kids Climbing Tower and a traveling exhibit, among others.
