SCHOLARSHIP

Graduation 2015

RECIPIENTS Leader Publications

awards one student from each school in its coverage area with a $500 scholarship. The goal of this scholarship is to publicly honor senior students who stand out as leaders in the community and celebrate their decision to continue their education at a collegiate level. Each applicant was asked,

Write a 500-word essay indicating how you have been a leader in your community, how you believe it will affect your future endeavors, and what advice you would offer future students in your community.”

These are their responses.

of Brandywine High School. While in high school, Brooke played varsity basketball, soccer and volleyball, and served as captain for each. She will attend Grand Valley State University to study radiation therapy.

good leader should possess many different qualities. All good leaders are excellent listeners. They prove to their teammates that they are always there and they always stay true to their word. Being a leader means that you are motivated to help others succeed. The greatest feeling is watching someone become a better person, and being a better leader is what influences others to do so. Leaders help people build confidence and their main goal is to stay positive. Attitudes travel throughout the team. If the leader of the team stays positive, their teammates will do the same. Showing consistent encouragement yet knowing when to put their foot down during certain situations is a great leader. I feel like I have possessed all of these qualities during sports as my role as a captain as well as outside of sports. I am majoring in radiation therapy and leadership is a must in my career field. Not only are cancer patients struggling physically, but emotionally as well. Being a radiation therapist means you always have to surround your patients with positive attitudes. You have to be there for your patients and show love, support and kindness towards them every chance you get. Many people don’t realize how much the doctors, nurses or radiation therapists affect a patient’s life. They follow your lead. If you show a positive attitude and a positive mindset, they will

too. The way employees act reflect on your whole patient’s day. While my mom was going through chemotherapy, she hated her oncology department. The employees were rude and discomforting towards her. Just walking into the building knowing she was going to be surrounded by negative people made her sick. She had an awful experience and I would never want someone else to experience that. Going through cancer is such an emotional and physical roller coaster as it is. Everyone has their good days and their bad days. I know the number one thing I will do as a radiation therapist is make sure all my patients always have as many good days as possible. My goal is to have a positive attitude to reflect on my patients. They are going through enough as it is. The least they deserve is positivity and support. The number one thing I would tell future students is to try your absolute best through high school. High school determines where and how you will start your future. The harder you try, the more opportunities will be thrown your way. Higher GPAs and higher ACT scores lead to more scholarship money toward college as well. Basically, to sum everything up, simply try your best throughout high school. Turn your homework in on time, study for tests and be a leader in the classroom. If you put your mind to it and give it your all, you will be successful and pleased with the results.”

“T

he best example of my leadership in the community is the assistance I have given to the Buchanan girls’ tennis team’s coach, Coach Kratky. Since my freshman year, I have shown initiative by spending every waking hour of every waking day of any season on a tennis court to show my teammates the same amount of effort and dedication they should show as well. When I started, I did not do much assisting in coaching the girls because I knew very little and I helped to increase my knowledge of tennis even more. I did little odd jobs for Coach Kratky, mainly just picked up balls and watched the girls play. Even so, it meant a lot to Coach Kratky. As my skills in tennis grew, the more I was able to help Coach Kratky with coaching the girls, teaching them what I learned during my winter tennis camps. I started to hit (tennis term for rallying the ball back and forth) with the girls to warm them up and to help them with their stamina, and I would correct anything wrong with their swings. This gave Coach Kratky time to work with other girls, knowing that the remaining girls were doing something productive. ... My senior year of tennis, I played singles during my season and learned a lot. So this year, I worked a lot with the singles players, teaching them how to swing, serve, volley and even run. I was a huge help to Coach Kratky on Wednesdays — what our school calls Wacky

Wednesdays — because school would be released early and she would have a meeting that lasted until about 3:30, and that was a lot of lost practice time because she wasn’t there to coach. This is where I became assistant coach and I ran the beginning of practice so that the girls didn’t have to lose any practice time. I have also encouraged girls to stay after practice with me as long as they can to practice a little more, especially on the nice days, because a tennis player should never waste a good day to practice or play, because rain can easily take away a practice day. My four-year tennis experience has made me a person who will love to play tennis for the rest of my life and someone who will want to teach tennis to anyone and everyone who will let me. I have shown a level of dedication to tennis that many of the boys and girls cannot imagine, but they try their best to maintain my level of dedication My teammates get a glance at the amount of effort I put into each practice and they try to put in just as much. The girls see my ‘wisdom’ (their words) and they listen and try to apply it whenever they can. So if I were to give an incoming freshman advice, it would be to be passionate about the things you love and to show off that passion. In some way or another, your passion can help others. In some way or another, your passion can fuel others. But most importantly, in some way or another, your passion can inspire others.”

Buchanan High School

Ian Tyler of Buchanan, is the son of Dan and Stacey DeMaio. While attending Buchanan

Cassopolis/Ross Beatty High School

Jacob Roth of Cassopolis, is the son of Adam and Teresa Dahlgren, and a graduate of

Ross Beatty High School. Jacob was Mr. Cassopolis and a member of the baseball, football and FFA teams. He hopes to attend Hope College or Grand Valley State University to study physical therapy.

“S

ince my move into this community I have strived to be a stellar leader. I have always wanted to be a leader and an example for my contemporaries; I was given the opportunity when I moved to Cassopolis. Since attending Cassopolis High School I have been a student athlete that played in a manner that was noteworthy. Although I may have started off as cocky or arrogant they soon realized my goal was to help them improve their own skills. My willingness and eagerness to help others improve was something younger athletes appreciated because they knew my intentions were positive. This resulted in me becoming a captain of the varsity football team my senior year after two years of non-stop hardwork and dedication to the program. I also volunteered with the younger kid’s and they always enjoyed my positive energy while coaching their football or baseball practices. I have shown leadership through FFA by being both a regional and a chapter officer. I have also excelled in leadership contests making it to state and winning two years in a row. Other members see my dedication to this organization and my accomplishments and it inspires them to be successful. Being a member of NHS and an honor roll student, and considering the struggles I have overcome in my life, other students see that if I can do it so can they. I am a member of CUCM church and I am

very active with community service activities that my church participates in. Recently I was awarded the Mr. Cassopolis title and I hope to inspire other young men to follow in my footsteps. All of these activities will definitely affect my future endeavors in a positive way and have a lasting impact on the community. Knowing that I left my footprint on student’s lives at Cassopolis Public Schools aids my self-confidence and self-worth. With the positive difference I have made, I can look back and remember that I always encouraged others to never give up. Through my memories and past accomplishments, I remember that through everything I have endured I never let anything slow me down. I just will continue to be myself and not worry what others think about me or what might get in the way of me being successful. My advice for future students and my community is to never give up. Failure is not an option when you choose to be successful. Always try and try again until you are the best version of yourself that you can be. I would continue to tell them that hard work and dedication always has an award at the end. I would share with them to just be true to who you are and follow your morals. In the end a leader is a person who is honest, hardworking, and endeavors for success. That is why I feel that I am a leader.”

of Dowagiac, is the daughter of Noel Brooks and Kelly Gnodtke and a graduate of Dowagiac Union High School. She has participated in a variety of activities, including the Chieftain Heart Club, varsity cheerleading and Front Row Crew.

“H

ello, my name is Sydney Brooks and I am a senior from Dowagiac Union High School. I am the eldest of eight children. Besides working and doing daily chores at home, I have excelled in school and earned a class rank of third with a cumulative grade point average of 3.973. I am also a member of the National Honor’s Society, have cheered for football, basketball, and competitive teams, and played an integral part in numerous clubs and community service projects. I am the founding student and president of the Chieftain Heart Club. We work hard year after year to promote positive spirit and unity in the community. We started the Front Row Crew two years ago to unite the student section. I was voted onto the Front Row Crew both years since its creation. This year we helped Dowagiac earn the title of MHSAA’s Battle of the Fans Champions! We refer to our movement as “Dowagiac United.” The progress made in the past years through the Chieftain Heart Club will not soon be forgotten. Outside of the Chieftain Heart and Front Row Crew, I have participated in many other community service projects including helping at the annual blood drive, volunteering to serve lunch and pass out canned goods at the St. Paul’s Luncheon, backpack packing with the United Way, making the flyers for and serving food at the annual Senior Citizen Luncheon, serving breakfast at the Dowagiac Conservation Club on Sundays, teaching young girls about cheerleading at cheer clinics, showing underclassmen around at Freshman Orientation, and teaching senior citizens basic computer skills and confidence in a D.A.N.C.E.S

Edwardsburg High School. She has participated in band, student council and the National Honors Society, among other activities. She plans to attend Michigan State University to study education.

“A

s a high school senior, I have had many opportunities to develop my leadership abilities. I have been the class treasurer for two years along with being a member of our school’s student council. Through this experience, I have been able to participate in food drives for our community as well as other fundraising activities through the school. With the help of our council, we were able to purchase new benches out in front of our school and feed needy families in our community over the Christmas holiday. In addition to student council, I was elected the vice president of National Honor Society. So far, our chapter has done a highway clean up, blood drive, and Operation Christmas. Operation Christmas this year consisted of 41 underprivileged kindergarten and first graders shopping for their families using money that members collected through donations around our school and the community. Along with this, I have been a leader and role model at my baton corps, The Royal Majesties. With the Royal Majesties, I have performed at nursing homes where we spread some cheer to those that many forget about during the holiday season. I have also performed in many parades with my baton corp as well as with the Edwardsburg High School Marching Band. All of these acts of service and leadership have impacted me as well as the community. After doing Operation Christmas, I see just how blessed I am compared to many in my community. When we think of Christmas presents, most don’t want the hat and gloves like

the kids we shopped with did. Many children and adults want something new, like an Xbox or a Wii. We don’t worry about the necessities because we already have them. I also don’t have to worry about getting food for the holiday or an everyday meal like those we help through the food drive. Every year we collect so much food for families in our area and many times we are close to giving all the food the bank needs, but many times they still need more. When we unload the trucks you think it has to be enough. I would have never thought that we had so many families around us that are in need of food. These experiences in particular have impacted my life and what I want to continue on in the future. In college, I want to continue volunteering in the community and providing assistance to those who are less fortunate than I am by donating my time to food banks and other organizations. When I graduate and am teaching elementary students, I will encourage them to donate their time. I would also like to have the students do something as a class, like writing letters to soldiers overseas during the holidays. Teaching is the perfect fit in my life because I love to help out the younger generation. Education is a goal that I want to pursue in the future with further education. Because of all the opportunities I have had with leading a group of people, both my age and younger, I believe I have the potential to become a great teacher. Teaching students will also help me share my abilities with them and help them blossom into great leaders as well.”

Edwardsburg High School

Monica Isza of Niles, is the daughter of Richard and Becky Isza and a graduate of

class. In 2012, we organized a Chieftain Heart Summer Camp to provide fun and positive activities for students to do in the summer. This year, I was awarded the Shining Star award for exemplary community leadership, service, and scholarship. This award is given to one student from each community every year. I was also recently issued an official proclamation by Mayor Lyons of Dowagiac expressing his gratitude to myself and the Chieftain Heart for uniting the community. I am awarded academic awards of excellence every year. Through the activities I have planned and organized in school and my leadership positions, I have come to the conclusion that I have the persistence and motivation necessary to get things done, a skill that many lack. I have learned a plethora of leadership, social, organizational, accounting, and administrative skills. These skills will benefit me in college, in the workforce, and in all of my life to come. Education has great importance to me as I am one of those rare people who love learning no matter the subject. A good education will allow me to be even more successful in life and give back to my community as well as make an impact, no matter how small, on the world. After graduation, I plan to attend Southwestern College to get my associate’s degree in cience. Following Southwestern Michigan College, I will further my education at another college in Michigan to pursue a career in biology, a science that I love. I look forward to continuing my education in college and starting my career. This scholarship will help me achieve my academic goals and pursue my dreams in the field of biology!”

Grace Harvey of Niles, is the daughter of Marvin and Carla Harvey-Murphy and is a graduate of Niles

High School. She has extensive volunteer experience both in Niles and in Florida. She plans to attend Florida A&M University to study marketing/business administration.

“S

ince I was a young girl I’ve wanted to attend college. For me, college has never been an option it has always been a requirement. While keeping all my options open attending a historical black college and/or university has always been my number one desire. I know that any college can assist me in fulfilling my goals and dreams in life, but I’m most certain none could compare to a HBCU experience. Attending college would help me become more successful and being in college would also help teach me a sense of responsibility. In this day and age I need to be stable and focused within my career. In order for me to do that I’ll also have to surround myself with people with the same mind set as myself. Going to college will also teach me life skills. Not only do I want to go to college, I want to graduate from college, and continue with my community service. I believe it is important to volunteer and give back to the community, in which I reside. If I could make a difference, to me that’s a huge goal, and to accomplish that would be everything! I have volunteered and participated in numerous extracurricular events. I’ve displayed leadership by serving as an Ambassador for Niles New Tech providing tours to business partners, school leaders, and community members. Also, I was a former member with Daughters of Finesse, which is a mentorship opportunity for young African American women helping in life skills and promoting volunteerism. Additionally, I organize activities for the Class of 2015 as well as being a member of the cheerleading squad providing school spirit. As I continue with my education, I will continue with my volunteer work, join groups and committees that are enthused and innovative. While attending college I plan on studying business. I

would like to major in this field because I enjoy that professional lifestyle. I’m expecting to gain knowledge about becoming a businesswoman and also to make long-lasting friendships. One day I plan on starting up a company called Touched by Grace. This company would provide needs for those who have heart conditions, specifically children. I’d like to start this because I have a heart condition and I know what it’s like to go through that process. I have had two open heart surgeries during the course of my life. The first one was at the age of 8 years old and the second one when I was 15 years old. With an organization like Touched by Grace I would be able to help out families who have children that are going through the same process that my family and I went through. Touched by Grace would help them financially, emotionally and spiritually. Having this type of business with the resources I intend to offer, will be a huge asset to any community. I would offer volunteer hours to students and adults, who are looking to give back to their community! I could also look into seeing if there are any other organizations similar to this one and if they would be interested in partnering up. Starting up my own company or organization such as Touched by Grace is my top goal. Everything up to that point is going to help me develop skills, knowledge, and discipline. I know that attending college, with my mindset, will most certainly help me reach that goal. My top priority is to make sure that I stay focused and always do what is best for me, my community, and my future! I will be successful and I am determined to become the great businesswomen that I aspire to be with the assistance of a great college education behind me.”

Career or community college? (BPT) — What’s the difference between a career college and community college? While both types of learning institutions share the goal of enriching students’ lives through education, the experience they provide to students can vary greatly. Community college, educational and social enrichment Community colleges are designed to serve a diverse group of students, from recent high school graduates to those looking for educational and social enrichment. To meet the needs of this varied student body, community colleges tend to offer numerous programs and classes, but don’t necessarily focus on hands-on job skills. Community colleges typically offer non-degree classes and two-year associate degree programs for those looking to later transfer to a traditional college or university. With the recent national push encouraging high school students to further their education, many community colleges are struggling to cope with the surge in new students, which has resulted in large class sizes and waiting lists for many popular programs. Career college, workforce preparation and hands-on learning At career colleges, the main focus is to prepare students for the workforce once they graduate. These career-focused schools want their students to have the necessary skills to hit the ground running their first day on the job. This intensive approach is made possible with classes of smaller sizes that are taught by experts who are working in their field. Some may know career colleges as vocational schools, tech schools or trade schools, and more recently they have expanded to include many more in-demand career programs. In addition to the traditional trades, career colleges now also focus on graphic design, information technology, business, criminal justice and health care professions. For those who are thinking about enrolling in college, have a specific career in mind and excel in a hands-on learning environment, a career college might be

a good option. Most students at career colleges have already tried community or even traditional colleges and are looking for programs that train them for the workforce, not post-graduate education. Benefits of choosing a career college “Everything we do is focused on preparing students for the career path they have chosen, and we structure the programs to give them skills they need to be successful on the job,” says Westwood College Chicago Campus President Hamed Shibli. Westwood offers 35 career-focused degree programs across its 14 campuses. Learn more about the various types of career-focused programs offered at Westwood College. The Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities provides a wealth of information about career colleges. Notably, there are a few key distinctions found at career colleges. Programs Career colleges’ curriculums are designed to meet specific needs of employ-

ers. They focus on specific tasks students will need to accomplish in their field of training. Hands-on training Much of the curriculum at a career college will be spent focusing on actual tasks that will need to be completed on the job. Technical skills Career-focused training is most appropriate for jobs that require technical training. For example, students in graphic design get a lot of hands-on training with design programs like Adobe InDesign and Photoshop so they become proficient and are ready to work once they finish their degree. Staff with experience in the field of study Many staff members of career colleges are also working in the fields they teach and can help students gain a better understanding of what might be expected of them once they get a job.

Career services Career colleges have a team of career services representatives who can help students prepare resumes, practice interview skills and locate job search resources. Accreditation Career colleges are typically accredited by national accreditation agencies that measure faculty experience and outcomes such as graduation and employment rates. Conversely, community colleges and traditional colleges are most often regionally accredited and are measured on areas such as student learning, teacher effectiveness, and resources available. “Career colleges and community colleges appeal to different types of students,” Shibli said. “We recommend visiting colleges and talking with enrolled students to determine the best choice. We want to enroll students who are passionate about their future and will be successful.”
