How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? You must learn to deal with adversity at times. It is a roller coaster ride, so you can’t get too high or too low. You must bounce back and go on and build character. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? Strength. We have more than 10 kids benching over 200 pounds. 7

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? The goals we set are to play fair, compete for every point and stay as positive as we can with everything we do. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I think the players take it hard when they mess up or don’t win, so I try to give them smaller goals to achieve or accomplish more than winning and losing. state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Goals this year are to win the conference and to have a winning season. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? The highs and lows of a season can be dealt with by having consistency on and off the court with your players. You also have to put your players in good and bad situations in practice so that they can figure out how to handle them. Team goals this year would be to create an excellent team atmosphere of athletes that love the sport and can encourage one another through the ups and downs of the season. Our players from last year are very level-headed individuals and handle the highs and lows very well. I hope that they can help teach the new kids. We talk a lot about the power of positive talk. Shooting for an all-state academic team this year. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Winning and losing are both a part of life that they will consistently face. When winning, always realizing that they didn’t get there on their own and to appreciate those who helped get them there. SEASON SCHEDULE

SEPTEMBER 8 @ Decatur, 9 a.m. 12 Southwest 10 jamboree, 5 p.m. 15 @ Mendon, 10 a.m. 19 @ Bloomingdale, 5 p.m. 22 @ Bangor, 8:30 a.m. 26 Southwest 10 jamboree, 5 p.m. OCTOBER 3 @ Marcellus, 5 p.m. 6 @ Portage, 8:30 a.m. 11 @ Dowagiac, 5 p.m. 17 @ Mendon, 5 p.m. 20 @ Gobles, 8:30 a.m.

Top newcomers: Lauren Anderson, Anna Leach, Eliza McGinn, Kyleigh Gould, Addison Ward, Alyssa Roark, Buster Ward, Galen Stahl, Kyle McGrew, Ben Gillesby

Weaknesses: We are young. Our boys and girls teams have a combined total of eight years of previous varsity experience, so we still have a lot to learn.

Strengths: As usual, cross country seems to draw the best students in the school, so we have a smart, talented, hard-working and fun group of students.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Winning

is too narrow of a goal. This is only one season in one year of these athletes’ lives. I am more interested in what they learn about themselves and how they respond to success and adversity. I wonder how they will encourage each other as a team. I wonder how many of these athletes will use this experience as a springboard for lifelong fitness. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Cross country is all about endurance, and so is life. My job is to help them cope with the highs and lows in life, and long-distance running offers some great learning opportunities. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I am amazed at how much these athletes have matured since I met them. We are smarter and more focused. Cross country in Cassopolis has mushroomed from a few dedicated high school girls (who have since graduated) into several underclassmen who proudly identify themselves as members of the cross country team.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? We coaches keep telling them to raise their expectations and believe in the potential that we see in them. We try to reinforce the discipline and work ethic that elite programs have in each and every practice. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I’ll go back to defense and passing. The back row play has improved greatly. This team can be very scrappy and will only get better as the season progresses.

the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Handling the highs and lows of winning and losing is never easy; it is a season long, if not lifelong challenge. We talk about it on a regular basis so I think we will deal with it well. Coaching the highs and lows I try to get them to understand that it is not about what you just did, the important thing is what you do next. Our focus should be on the next shot. Do the best we can with what we have in front of us and we will be fine. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? It is very early in the year, but I think that our overall knowledge is better and we are more conscious of what it takes to think our way around the golf course.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Defensively, our goals are to get a shutout and cause three or more turnovers. Offensively, our goal is to score on every possession. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Some of the best coaching experiences come after a loss. Coaches and players that can make adjustments and improvements and learn from a loss will experience success in the future. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I coach teenagers. There are lots of high and lows every single day. I think the players handle them fairly well — I’d even say better than the average teenager. I coach players to live in the moment, but to stay grounded. Understand our goals; give everything you have to obtaining them, yet still remember that high school soccer will be only a small piece of your life. Make memories every day. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? Fitness and strength, creative soccer and possession soccer.

Weaknesses: Small numbers on boys team. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? For all

returning runners to set new personal records this year early in the season and then continue to improve throughout the remainder of the season, and to close the gap between our No. 1 runner and our No. 5 runner, to always run competitively. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? The team will need to understand that in order to peak at the end of the season they will not be able to run “fresh” and feel “rested” before each meet. They will have to use some of the meets as high intensity training workouts and learn to run through them with tired legs and still be competitive. They have to look at the big picture and trust their training will pay off for them even on the days they feel tired. Every athlete needs to understand that the team results are only as good as their individual performance.

We are proud to support southwest Michigan athletes.

VOLLEYBALL COACH REPORTS Coach: Jenny Nate Years coaching at current school: Seventh year at Niles Last year’s record/place in conference: 41-9-4, district and regional champions Key starters lost: Bella Rasler, Bre Love, Carly Barton, and Jora Barnes. Key returning lettermen: Abbie Harpenau, Trystin Schlutt, Nikola Nate, Taylor Bailey, Bianca Pickens, Rachel Moore, Grace Florkowski and Emelyn Tucker. Top newcomers: We have several top newcomers including Zoie Appleberry, Bella Sinner, Marika Ruppart and Rachel Bowman. Strengths: We have various strengths this year even though we are young. Half of my starting lineup from last year’s district and regional championship team were sophomores and two current seniors, so even though we are young and rebuilding, these girls were part of

that winning combination. They have an amazing work ethic, volleyball IQ, grit, and they know how to win. They are excellent teammates, and they are well aware of the high level competition that we will face, and they

understand the work it will take as a team to continue to win at that level with their new team. They also are incredibly driven, focused, scrappy, and hustle at all times.

Weaknesses: We play an incredibly difficult schedule immediately facing mostly Class A schools and some of the strongest teams in the state, so we will have to work hard in the upcoming week to increase our speed concerning all aspects of the game and prepare. We are excited to get to work. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Our goal is always to win the conference, districts, regionals, and to win the state championship, but like you said, we have various team goals that we set together on day one of our season. Our goal is to practice every day 10 times harder than any other team in the state who wants what we want. So, our main goal is always to focus on preparation one day at a time.

BOYS

Coach: Joseph (Tony) Todd Years coaching sport at current school: Sixth year at Niles Last year’s record/place in conference: Ninth-place in SMAC Key starters lost: Devin Tomlinson Key returning lettermen: Adam Shepherd, Weston Eager, Bryant Echeveirra Top newcomers: None Strengths: Our top three guys.

Weaknesses: No depth and we are young. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Simple, to get these first-year runners better. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Level mind. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? More mileage put in.

will help the team move forward.

Years coaching sport at current school: Sixth year at Niles

Strengths: I feel like it’s the first time since I have been coaching cross country that one of our strengths is that we have many experienced runners. With that said, it means that the team must show improvement at all invites, conference meets and regionals. The expectations for them are much higher.

Last year’s record/place in conference: First-place at Shamrock Invitational Key starters lost: Kailey Skarbek and Ashley Shortman’s leadership was a loss to the program because they always lead by example. Great individuals overall but I do believe we have great leaders for this year’s squad as well. Key returning lettermen: Kaylee Thompson, who placed 48th at the state meet last year. We have depth in talent this year with the upperclassman. They are: Kayla Trueblood, Erin Thomas, Cassie Klingerman, Taylor Haboush, Maeli Rogers, and sophomore Sydney Skarbek Top newcomers: I would have to say that Taylor Altergott is our top newcomer. She took the season off last year and has been working hard to get back to where she was her sophomore year. Her leadership along with talent

Weaknesses: I believe our weakness this year is that there is not enough depth in our underclassmen. There is talent at that level but we have small numbers and we need to figure out how to change that. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? I think our biggest team goals this year are to beat St. Joe and to do everything we can to qualify for the state meet as a team this year. It’s a tough road but the girls want to accomplish that for the program and school. I think another team goal is to get more than Kaylee Thompson to the state

meet this year to run as an individual if we don’t make it as a team. I feel it’s a team goal even though it’s about individuals making it because if the girls work hard in practice and push each other then it helps individuals improve. The second through seventh runners on our team this year are up for grabs. That is how close they are in talent.

GIRLS

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Overall, this year’s seniors and juniors are beginning to hate losing. I have always tried to instill in athletes that you have to hate losing more than you like winning. With that type of mindset, athletes will have better outcomes when they hate losing. When you hate losing it pushes your mind to never give up and always to try your hardest. That in itself is winning. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I think they are grasping that they need to work hard for their team and not for themselves. It’s easy for cross country runners to worry about their individual growth versus the team growth.

Key returning lettermen: Chad Barton, Ben Lovett, Johnny Bybee, Blake Saratore, Addison Davies, Chase Lotsbaich, Trey Knight, Ryan Kosten, Jacob Gondeck, Brooke Timm and Sam Knight Top newcomers: I am looking forward to watching some newcomers take off this season. Alex Krueger will be strong for us, Carson Schiele, Luis Vasquez and Erica Lovett are great contributions and we have some good freshman players eager to take their places on the team.

Strengths: I would say our work ethic is a major strength for us. Never complaining, always all in at practice, willing to put in the extra work. This will help to a build this young team. Weaknesses: Inexperience and youth. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? This group of athletes has a great chemistry as a team. They are very positive with each other as they push each other to succeed. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I am looking forward to this season.

in or around the fairway doesn’t hurt us a much as a bad shot out of bounds, in the woods or splashing one in the drink.

Weaknesses: Like most golfers we need to improve our short game. We also need to improve our bad shots. A bad shot that moves closer to the hole

you set? We would like to qualify for academic all-state. We would like the entire team to improve each week. Some of our players’ goals are to shoot in the low 80s while others are trying to break 100.

GOLF

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Our main concern is getting better throughout the year and to enjoy the experience. Golf is a lifetime sport that challenges a player’s patience, their integrity, and their ability to push ahead while dealing with adversity. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? Some of the girls have worked on their game during the summer. A couple of the girls even work at area golf courses where they can get playing tips from local members and pros.
