Unique business model helps coffee shop build community Story by Michael Caldwell | Photography by Michelle Pulling

I

t seems fitting that the maroon-painted brick building with the faded, green-striped awning stands at one of the most unique intersections in South Bend, Indiana. Four streets — Portage, DeMaude, California and Cottage Grove — all converge from a variety of directions, forming anything but right angles. Just a few dozen feet away is the door to a place that reflects a similar nexus on the inside of its walls. People from diverse walks of life mingle, merge and congregate inside the long, narrow space filled with art and furniture as eclectic as its patrons. Even further driving home the idea that this little corner of a once-embattled South Bend neighborhood is some sort of hub of convergence is the fact that The Local Cup coffee shop truly serves as a bridge — literally and metaphorically — between the Near Northwest Neighborhood, Inc. development office on one side and the actual community center on the other. Connections are what truly fill The Local Cup.

n a wall in South Bend’s John Adams High School, a row of faded photographs highlighting athletic accomplishments leads the way to the school’s gymnasium. In one photo, a 15-year-old freshman smiles proudly, the youngest on a team of varsity athletes who had just won the 1986 Indiana softball sectional. In the gymnasium on the other side of the wall, that same 15-year-old spent countless hours on the basketball court, both as a cheerleader for the boys basketball team and as a player on the girls team. Nearly three decades later, Lisa Varga looks at the photograph and laughs, pointing out that her eyes were closed. “I remember that season so well,” Lisa said. “It was just me and one other freshman. The older girls made us earn our keep.” Several yards down that hallway, Lisa is called to use the same leadership skills and work ethic she learned as an athlete at the school.
