Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce 2015
Did you know? A national survey of 2,000 adults reveals that being active in a local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy because two-thirds of consumers believe that such companies use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers and are involved in the community. The study, conducted by the Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, found consumer perceptions of chamber members to be positive in many ways: • When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 49% more likely to think favorably of it and 80% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. • If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., is a chamber board member), consumers are 10% more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. • When consumers know that a national restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 68% more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. • When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 36% more likely to think favorably of the company.
Major Impact on Small Businesses Small businesses represent the largest segment of most local chamber membership roles, and the study indicates that chamber membership has consistent and powerful benefits for small business members — if consumers are aware that the small business is involved with its local chamber. For example, if respondents know
that a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business enjoys a 49% increase in its consumer favorability rating, a 73% increase in consumer awareness, a 68% increase in its local reputation, and an 80% increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future. Most people know what their local chambers do; the study assessed the effect of this knowledge on perceptions of chamber members. The researchers said any belief about the chamber of commerce — whether that belief was true or not — could have a significant positive impact on how someone views a member … he or she is more likely to think that the [member] company’s products stack up well and have a favorable opinion toward the company. The key factor in developing and maintaining positive consumer perception of chamber members, the Schapiro Group said, was that “positive outcomes only occur when consumers know that a business is a chamber member (i.e., being involved in the chamber is a known facet of the company’s reputation).” Accordingly, when consumers know that a large business is a member of the chamber, they are likely to patronize the company more often, to express favorable opinions about the company, to know more about the company, and to buy the company’s products. The strength and nature of these effects differ by industry.
Creating Consumer Confidence
When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 15% more likely to report knowing a lot about the franchise, 58% more likely to eat at the franchise more often, 68% more likely to eat at the franchise in

the next few months, and 37% more likely to think favorably of the franchise. Among consumers who do not eat at the franchise so often, those who are aware that the franchise is a member of the chamber are 33% more likely to hold favorable opinions of the franchise. Among consumers who hold less favorable opinions of the franchise, those who are aware that the franchise is a member of the chamber are 65% more likely to eat there in the coming months. The study, commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), in cooperation with the Western Association of Chamber Executives, was sponsored by Insperity, a Houston-based company that provides human resources
and other business services to more than 100,000 businesses nationwide. J. Mac Holladay, founder and CEO of Market Street Services, an economic development firm in Atlanta, was a key contributor of concepts used to develop the study. The new study tracks similar data reported by the Schapiro Group in 2007. “Despite changes in markets and demographics, a nagging recession and the growing influence of the internet, the chamber brand today is stronger and more dynamic than ever,” said ACCE President Mick Fleming. “We’re proud that the numbers prove, once again, that engagement in a chamber means a positive perception of the business in the eyes of the buying public.”

Martin’s Super Markets Pledging service and value to customers and community since 1947. In the fall of 1947, Jane and Martin Tarnow opened the first Martin’s Super Market as an 800-square-foot store on Portage Avenue in South Bend, Indiana. From that small beginning, Martin’s Super Markets has grown to 21 stores located in South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Granger, Nappanee, Plymouth, Logansport, Goshen and Warsaw Indiana, as well as stores in Niles, St. Joseph and Stevensville, Michigan. A new Martin’s Express store will open on the south side of Goshen, Indiana on May 7th.
Martin’s has continued to offer its customers conveniences such as full-service Floral Shoppes and specialty departments, including Side Door Deli Cafés, which offer a full variety of hot and cold ready-to-eat menu items. Customers can pick up their favorite Starbucks® beverage at more than half of the Martin’s stores. Paw Mart pet supply stores are located adjacent to five store locations. Customers can also get their prescriptions filled while they shop at any one of 15 convenient, in-store pharmacies.
The Tarnows made their small store a success through hard work, determination and innovative ideas. Although these qualities are always important, it’s customer service that is the top priority at every Martin’s location. Each employee is trained to meet customers’ needs, while providing the best quality products and greatest value Community service and involvement helps for the dollar. grocery store.” To meet the needs of area schools, Martin’s established the Advantages for Education program, which helps schools earn educational equipment through customers’ use of their Martin’s Advantage Cards. Martin’s also sponsors several other programs that give back to the community; including Stuff a Bus (food drive), Roofsit (prevent child abuse) and Heat for Homes (heating assistance). It keeps your community alive. Instead of having a busy “big-box” store down the street and empty store-fronts lining your downtown, keeping local business owners “in business” keeps your town alive and kicking. Keeping the economy alive also helps with local events, which small businesses are more apt to sponsor and support. Many big-boxes just take the money and run.
Supporting local businesses is a way of living mindfully and giving conscious thought to where you are spending your money and where it goes after it leaves your wallet.

Business of the Year United Federal Credit Union
UFCU and its leadership have added to the growth in the Niles community with building a new administrative building on 11th Street. The investment in this community has been very valuable. Originally chartered in 1949, the company began as the Nineteen Hundred Credit Union. Now more commonly known as Whirlpool Corporation, it was
started in a small cashbox kept in a desk drawer. Another section of its roots came in 1937 as the Buchanan Clark Employee Credit Union. This company later changed its name to United Federal Credit Union in 1987. After some curve, from acquiring and consolidating with other Credit Unions across the nation and bends in the road, these two joined to later become United Federal Credit Union in 2006. The year 2013 was a banner year for United Federal Credit Union as it was named the Michigan Credit Union League’s Outstanding Credit Union of the Year and National Federal Credit Union of the Year by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions. But they did not stop there. They continue to invest in the communities they serve with scholarships, volunteer hours and sponsorships of sports teams and chambers of commerce.

Niles Voice of Care: Jan Personette Jan Personette is the definition of Niles’ biggest fan. She gives so much of herself to the community and to the underprivileged, and she deserves recognition for it. She attends as many meetings as humanly possible of the Niles City Council, the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce, TWIN CATS and the Ferry Street Resource Center. Jan wants the “Voice of Care” for those in need to be heard loud and clear across the county and, in many cases, across the state, and she does everything she can to achieve this goal. Niles Voice of Care: Niles City Police On Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, the quick thinking and calm demeanor of the Niles City Police Department settled a terrifying incident that could have ended much worse than it did. The department initially received a call just prior to 7 p.m. that Friday evening from Amtrak in Chicago, saying that a passenger was “acting odd and becoming agitated.”
When police arrived on the scene at the Amtrak depot in Niles, they were met with a noticeable commotion happening next to one of the parked train cars, with passengers attempting to exit the train. When the officers were able to push through the chaotic crowd and board the train, they were met by a man who was armed with a knife. He was subdued by a taser and taken into custody without further incident.
Police quickly located four victims — one female and three males — all with cuts or stabs. Because of the department’s actions, all four victims survived. The Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce would like to commend this department and these officers involved in this incident.

Advisor is one of the most important aspects of successful investing.
That’s why we have more than 13,000 financial advisors located in more than 11,000 offices around the country. Most offices have only one financial advisor and one branch office administrator who are dedicated to helping the individual investors in their community reach their financial goals. Founded in 1922, we are a full-service brokerage firm and a private partnership – a structure that we believe gives us the independence to make long-term decisions that are in the best interests of our clients and associates, without the pressures publicly traded companies face to meet short-term earnings forecasts. Our thoughtful investment strategy includes identifying your specific, longterms goals, developing and implementing a tailored strategy and maintaining a diversified portfolio of quality investments. And our community-based, neighborhood locations in both large cities and smaller towns make us accessible and approachable in how we interact with our clients to develop these strategies. The mission of GateWay is to improve the quality of life and level of independence of individuals with disabilities and barriers through vocational opportunities, therapeutic service, training and other supports. We believe each person possesses unique skills and abilities. As such, GateWay works hard to identify and emphasize an individual’s talents, or MaxAbility, rather than their perceived “disability.” GateWay Services then assists individuals in securing competitive community employment in positions that best match their particular strengths and aptitudes. GateWay Services has developed a Strategic Plan that includes building additional alliances with businesses needing qualified and reliable staff members. This means, in part, providing prospective employers with information related to the concept of MaxAbility. GateWay Services intends to decrease the stigma associated with employing individuals who have been clinically diagnosed as having a disability and show employers the MaxAbility of all of our participants. For additional information about how GateWay Services can partner with your business, Please call
Tim Smith, Executive Director, at (269) 487-9839.

Machine tool at Brandywine Manufacturing in the U.S. is making a comeback, yet many companies face a serious challenge: They do not have enough skilled workers to meet the needs of their customers. More than half of manufacturers say this labor gap has impacted their company’s ability to grow.In 2012, Lake Michigan College, Brandywine Community Schools, and Berrien RESA unveiled a new collaboration to address this skills gap. The Machine Tool Program at Brandywine provides training for students as early as their freshman year in high school, helps high school juniors and seniors earn Early College credit through LMC, and provides degree and certificate options for LMC college students. To accommodate the program, LMC moved mills, lathes and surface grinders from its Bertrand Crossing campus in Niles to Brandywine High School’s existing machine-tool shop and a new classroom was added. Brandywine and LMC share the space, equipment, and instructors. High school students use the classroom during regular school hours, and college students use it in the evening. Classes like Machine Tool, Blue Print Reading, and Sketching are offered in addition to trade related classes like CNC, drafting, and design. The arrangement has been a great solution for employers in the region who need to meet an increasing demand for a skilled workforce. “They now have more access to new apprentices, increased offerings for their current employees, and specialized training in the afternoons,” said LMC’s Dean of Career and Workforce Education, Ken Flowers.

Halbritter Funeral Home Business name: HALBRITTER Funeral Services Owner & Key People: Ted Halbritter III owner & Licensed Funeral Director, James Meyer Licensed Funeral Director, and Lindsay Wright Licensed Funeral Director Years in business?: Since the early 1920’s What do you offer?: Many different types of funeral services including cremation options What makes you standout from competitors?: Both from being a lifelong resident or living in the community, our staff knows the Niles area and participates civically. When our services are needed it is a comfort to rely on someone you know. Message to convey to the community: We know our many faiths, agencies and organizations and have become a resource for loss and separation. What do you love most about the Niles community?: Our area has shown the ability to survive tough times and has been resolute. We have come together and helped one another; all along the banks of the Saint Joseph River! Unique fact or story about your business?: Halbritter Funeral Services began as the Price Funeral Home on 4th Street then moved to its present location in the Clayton Harrah home (the family who started National-Standard Company). When Main Street was widened, we purchased the paving bricks in front of our home to surround our signage. As we help families recognize their importance and heritage, we felt saving the bricks was symbolic. Future plans: In 2014, we renovated and expanded our parking facilities. Now we are concentrating on the interior bringing back the Mission Style of the home’s construction along with the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Veni’s Sweet Shop
Homemade – Fine Quality Chocolates!
Veni’s chocolatiers began their passion for crafting chocolate and candy formulas at the turn of the 19th century. These European traditions were brought to the quaint town of Niles, Michigan, where Veni’s Sweet Shop has been a local landmark ever since. Today, Veni’s takes great pride in it’s old-world traditons, time tested formulas, and techniques that have been handed down for over 100 years. Our cooked creams are still made from scratch, in a large copper kettle, and then carefully rolled and dipped by hand. We use only the finest, freshest ingredients such as sweet cream butter, pure oils and extracts, and cane sugar. By producing small, carefully blended batches of confections, Veni’s can guarantee a fresh, better tasting chocolate experience. You’ll love the rich, yet never overpowering flavor of our artisan chocolates and candies. Veni’s Sweet Shop has a unique meltaway, with a softly whipped center, unlike any other. Caramels, toffee and almond butter crunch are rich, buttery favorites as well. You can also enjoy unique flavors such as molasses sponge and candied orange peel. If you don’t see that special treat you’re looking for, just ask us. Suggestions are always welcome. Veni’s creates hand-made, hand dipped chocolates and candies with pride and artistry. Take a trip back in time and enjoy Veni’s…the way chocolate was meant to be.

Michigan Gateway Community Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in our local communities. It enables people with philanthropic interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care about — immediately, or through their will. Donors can establish a charitable fund at the foundation by contributing a variety of assets and may also recommend grants — in their name, if they choose — to nonprofit groups they wish to support. Incorporated in 1978 as the Buchanan Area Foundation, Michigan Gateway Community Foundation now serves Buchanan, Niles and all of Cass County. How Can I Give? You may make a gift of any amount to the Foundation, using a wide variety of assets such as cash, securities, life insurance, real estate, charitable remainder trusts, and bequests via your will. Regardless of its size, your donation will be used to benefit our communities. Some donors make an unrestricted contribution, allowing the trustees of the Foundation to decide how to direct the income and enabling us to respond to the changing community needs. Other donors prefer to designate their gift for a certain cause. If you have an interest that’s important to you — education, elder care, the arts, or youth programs, for example — you can choose for your donation to help fund programs in that particular area. You may also name a specific charitable organization that you would like your donation to help support. You can add your gift to an already existing fund, establish a new fund in your name, or create a special fund in living tribute to a family member or friend. Mr. Shoemaker and his wife Serena of 52 years have lived in Niles their entire married life. On January 10, 2015 he was admitted into Memorial Hospital South Bend and upon discharge he was unable to return home with his wife. He and his wife chose Silverbrook Nursing & Rehab for his therapy needs. In just about 3 weeks of working with the Therapy Department at Silverbrook, he was able to return home independently. Mr. Shoemaker stated that he received excellent care and therapy at Silverbrook and would not hesitate to recommend the facility to others.

Niles Community Schools Abundant School Choice in Niles Choosing a school for your child means more than selecting text books, backpacks and a physical location. It means choosing an environment that will not only teach children the building blocks of life, but also allow for creativity, growth and an educational environment where they can thrive and positively kick start success at an early age. School of Choice is an attractive option for parents across Michigan – providing families with the opportunity to discover the best alternative to meet the specific needs of their children. Fortunately for local families, Niles Community Schools offers an elite, diverse array of educational opportunities to students and families, regardless of the type of learner.
students shift from the elementary atmosphere to the middle school environment. Once through Oak Manor 6th Grade Center, students enter Ring Lardner Middle School where dedicated teachers engage students by providing an individualized learning experience through looping, which allows students to remain with the same core group of teachers and classmates through 7th and 8th grade. Looping enables teachers to address the unique academic and social needs of young teens.
Niles Community Schools is proud to have an excellent high school with different approaches Dr. Daniel Applegate tailored to any learner, including traditional, vocational or those who wish to dual-enroll for an early college start. Niles High School has opNiles’ professional education staff is committed to finding that tions for accelerated and advanced students, special needs perfect fit for learners at any age and will collaborate with par- students, a career and college center and boasts an award ents on the best available options to meet their needs. Niles New Tech is a unique, embedparents receive peace of mind knowing their child is receiving ded learning model within the high school that gives high school the vital preparation necessary to succeed as they establish learners an exclusive experience combining problem- based learning with a culture built on trust, respect and responsibility. their place in the world.
There is strong evidence showing that young children who enter quality Pre-K learning programs are more apt and ready to learn once they start school. At Northside Child Development Center, the Pre-K- K classes partner with local day care providers for training and collaboration and give young ones access to special education programs, Montessori and kindergarten classes. Transitioning into kindergarten and beyond can prove difficult for certain students, which is why Niles provides three effective varied approaches to support children as they continue their journey. Eastside Connections utilizes a Problem-Based learning method for K-8th using the magnet school concept, whereas Ballard Elementary affords K-5th graders opportunities to engage in active and varied learning experiences designed to stimulate whole brain learning. Lastly, Howard-Ellis Elementary provides K-5th graders with leveled reading, multi- age classrooms and modern technology integration tools woven into instruction. Each school is as actively involved in children’s learning as the next, but each has honed its own specialty to better suit the potential needs and learning styles of our community’s youth. The middle school years can be stressful and difficult to maneuver, which is why we’ve devoted special attention in helping
Sensitive to the fact that some community members prefer a learning approach that does not require brick and mortar, Niles Community Schools offers an alternative education program for homeschool and adult students, among others. W-A-Y & W-A-Y Forward gives non-traditional 6-12 graders a blended learning program comprised of project-based and online education in tandem with personalized face-to-face instruction. Homeschool students are welcomed to participate in school programs through flexible scheduling, non-intrusive enrollment and specialized programs. At Cedar Lane, high schoolers are offered an environment with lower student/teacher ratios to focus specifically on achievement through improved relationships. Lastly, Niles Adult Education is intended for students 16+ who wish to achieve their diploma or prepare via GED planning tests and basic adult education. Every student in our community is different from one another so it is only fair to provide diverse atmospheres for them to learn in their own way. This remains at the core of what we are trying to accomplish – providing an excellent array of resources, experiences and opportunities to help each learner become his or her best as they travel down the path of self-discovery and continue to strengthen our community. Dr. Daniel Applegate is Superintendent of Niles Community Schools.
