Michiana’s choice for Best Local College For the past two years, folks in Michiana have voted Lake Michigan College as the “Best of the Best” among local colleges.
Here’s what people are saying: “You’re not going to fail here because they’re so supportive.” – Claudia Hampton, Student, Niles
True Community Partnership Since opening its doors in 1998, LMC’s Bertrand Crossing campus in Niles has become an invaluable community resource. LMC is essential to regional economic growth. By developing strong partnerships with area business leaders to provide custom workforce training and to collaborate on program design, the college ensures they are effectively preparing students for careers in the area’s highgrowth industries. Faculty, staff, and students of the Lake Michigan College Bertrand Crossing Campus are staunch supporters of numerous community initiatives such as Hunter Ice Festival, the Day of Caring, Campus Blood Drives, EXPOsing Greatness, and Relay for Life. LMC hosts and partners with organizations including the Niles Downtown Development Authority, Four Flags Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of Berrien and Cass County, and the LaSalle Council Boy Scouts.
“The Bertrand crossing staff have created opportunities for thousands of kids in our schools, and they continue to innovate, adapt, and improve. Students feel like they’re heard. They feel like they’re supported, and they feel like they’re valued. And as a director of a school that’s important to me.” – Niles New Tech director Jerry Haltgren “Just based on the quality of the classes and how the teachers are teaching me, I’m actually learning. I’m more excited about school than I ever have been now.” – Lionel Kanyowa, LMC student from the United Kingdom
Community Education for Lifelong Learners LMC’s Community Education program improves people’s quality of life with interesting and enriching noncredit classes for people of all ages. Workshops are low commitment, spanning from one day, to several weeks in duration. They are free, or low cost opportunities to grow in the creative arts; home and garden; language, history and culture; and recreation and wellness. Exceptional Student Experiences LMC not only offers innovative academic and workforce training programs at a tuition families can afford, they’ve created a uniquely warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes students feel at home. From high school Early College students, to adults in career transitions, LMC’s small class sizes and staff dedicated to making sure students get the services and support they need, make LMC a special place for higher education.
“We are truly a family. The staff the faculty. They know you, you know them. So when you walk across the stage at commencement, it’s truly a celebration.” – Julie Uribe, Dental Assisting director

From the President
Welcome to Niles, Michigan It is an exciting time here in Niles. If we reach for the stars here, great things will continue to happen. Niles ranked No. 86 in a 2015 Forbes Magazine ranking of the Best Small Places for Business and Careers. The Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce is working to support these findings in working to create a better community for business and contribute to getting the good news out about our community. We have a vision for a vibrant greater Niles community. We aspire to help promote Niles as a prominent place to live, work and play. Niles is the largest city in Berrien County, it has all the elements of a vibrant community: The beautiful architecture in the historic district, a downtown with appeal, shop owners who are passionate about the community, miles of community trails with beautiful views. Many residents are working to transform the ordinary to extraordinary. Niles is gaining momentum in creating a lively downtown as an attraction to our community. The 2016 membership directory of the Four Flag Area Chamber is focused on our businesses and what is made in the Four Flags region. Manufacturing is the lifeblood of our community, from the Dodge Brothers who used to race around the streets of Niles to the several multi-generational manufacturers in our community. Our local manufacturers make everything from brackets for shelving, to water heater liners, paint for military marine craft and durable goods. Our manufacturing community is diverse and productive. Manufacturing is continuing to grow in our community, and there is currently over $20 million in expansion planned for the area with another $20 million estimated within the next 5 years. Niles is a hard working community with manufacturing as its backbone for growth and success. I trust you will enjoy learning about our manufacturers and businesses as much as I enjoyed meeting with them. Please be sure to take some time to familiarize yourself with our members. Try to shop and eat local first to support the fine business owners in our community. We need support to keep our tax dollars here for our schools and roads. There is more here than you know!

Make Niles a Thriving Economy 1. When stores are kept in business, it keeps jobs in town. We all seek to live in a vibrant community where great things happen and a booming downtown certainly makes that a reality. Local people need jobs to be able to continue spending money in their community.
2. Money spent in your town in a small business usually stays in town. It goes into the local bank, where it is loaned out to local residents, and it circulates within the local economy. Money spent at the big-box stores leaves town immediately and goes to the headquarters of said company, never to return to the local economy again. One 2004 study found that for every $100 spent at a local businesses, $68 remained in the community versus $43 for chain stores. That’s a big difference.
3. You get better customer service from small businesses. Have a problem with something you bought? You can actually walk in and talk to the person who sold you the product.
4. Tax dollars assist in developing our local infrastructure. Shopping in Niles means tax dollars remain in our community to assist with improving our roads and schools.

5. It keeps our community alive. Instead of having a busy “big-box” store down the street and empty store-fronts lining our downtown, keeping local business owners “in business” keeps our town alive and kicking. Keeping the economy alive also helps with local events, which small businesses are more apt to sponsor and support. Many big-boxes just take the money and run.

Veni’s Sweet Shop Homemade – Fine Quality Chocolates!
Veni’s chocolatiers began their passion for crafting chocolate and candy formulas at the turn of the 19th century. These European traditions were brought to the quaint town of Niles, MI, where Veni’s Sweet Shop has been a local landmark ever since. Today, Veni’s takes great pride in its old-world traditons, time tested formulas, and techniques that have been handed down for over 100 years. Our cooked creams are still made from scratch, in a large copper kettle, and then carefully rolled and dipped by hand. We use only the finest, freshest ingredients such as sweet cream butter, pure oils and extracts, and cane sugar. By producing small, carefully blended batches of confections, Veni’s can guarantee a fresh, better tasting chocolate experience.
228 East Main St. | Niles, MI 49120 269.684.1323 candy@venissweetshop.com www.VenisSweetShop.com
You’ll love the rich, yet never overpowering flavor of our artisan chocolates and candies. Veni’s Sweet Shop has a unique meltaway, with a softly whipped center, unlike any other. Carmels, toffee and almond butter crunch are rich, buttery favorites as well. You can also enjoy unique flavors such as molasses sponge and candied orange peel. If you don’t see that special treat you’re looking for, just ask us. Suggestions are always welcome. Veni’s creates hand-made, hand dipped chocolates and candies with pride and artistry. Take a trip back in time and enjoy Veni’s…the way chocolate was meant to be.

The ISO 9001 certified Express Employment Professionals franchise system was established in 1982 and had annual revenues of over $3 billion with over 750 independently owned locations in the U.S., Canada and South Africa. As the #1 industrial staffing company in the U.S, Express put over 500,000 people to work in 2015 with the ultimate goal of putting over 1 Million Americans to work. With a staff of 8 employees locally, the Express team cares deeply about the quality service they provide and focuses each day on finding “great people, great jobs with great companies”.

Great Lakes Eye Care Great Lakes Eye Care was founded by Dr. David Cooke in 1987 and has grown to include 9 eye-care providers and three offices. We are a comprehensive eye care provider, offering both optometric and opthalmological services including cataract and glaucoma surgeries, along with comprehensive retinal coverage. We especially love Niles and the surrounding communities because of the hometown feeling and kindness of our patients. We are proud to constantly improve services to our patients and are currently constructing an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) at our St. Joseph location. This will allow us more flexibility in scheduling surgical cases. An additional retinal opthalmologist will be joining our team in January of 2017. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

What Your Donations Do to Help the Community
Sure, it feels great to clear out the clutter at home and drop off those donations to Goodwill. It’s also a thrill to find something you need at a fraction of the cost in their retail stores. But have you ever wondered what impact those items can have in our community? There’s nothing like knowing you have a good job and the independence to take care of yourself and your family. Goodwill’s outreach extends to everyone looking for a job in difficult times. Through Community Career Centers in Northern Indiana, there are resources available free of charge to the general public. The facilities are equipped with work stations for job searches, word processing and training workshops taught by Goodwill experts and corporate partners are available. The Excel Center, a tuition free school for adults, will open soon offering students an opportunity to earn a core 40 high school diploma. Find out more by calling: (574) 472-7300 or visiting www.ExcelatGoodwill.org. Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels Founded in 1970 by a group of Niles and Buchanan community leaders, the Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels has been delivering nutritious lunches and dinners to area residents who cannot provide meals for themselves. The Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels has been relying on hundreds of loyal volunteer drivers for nearly 50 years. These volunteers make the rounds Monday through Friday, dropping off a hot lunch and a cold supper to the homes of those who sign up for the service. Meals cost $5 a day, and many clients of Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels qualify for a small subsidy. The meals are prepared by the nutritionists at Niles-Lakeland Hospital every day. Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels is not affiliated with any government agency and all contributions made to the organization are tax deductible. For more information, contact the Meals on Wheels facilitator at (269) 687-1462 or visit our website at www.mealsonwheelsnb.com PAID ADVERTISEMENT

What makes you stand out from competitors? Both from being a lifelong resident or living in the community, our staff knows the Niles area and participates civically. When our services are needed it is a comfort to rely on someone you know. What is one message you would convey to customers, clients or the community? We know our many faiths, agencies and organizations and have become a resource for loss and separation. What do you love most about the Niles community? Our area has shown the ability to survive tough times and has been resolute. We have come together and helped one another; all along the banks of the Saint Joseph River! Unique fact or story about your business? Halbritter Funeral Services began as the Price Funeral Home on 4th Street then moved to its present location in the Clayton Harrah home (the family who started National-Standard Company). When Main Street was widened, we purchased the paving bricks in front of our home to surround our signage. As we help families recognize their importance and heritage, we felt saving the bricks was symbolic. Future Plans? In 2014, we renovated and expanded our parking facilities. Now we are concentrating on the interior bringing back the Mission Style of the home’s construction along with the Arts and Crafts Movement. PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Niles Community Schools Abundant School Choice in Niles Choosing a school for your child means more than selecting text books, backpacks and a physical location. It means choosing an environment that will not only teach children the building blocks of life, but also allow for creativity, growth and an educational environment where they can thrive and positively kick start success at an early age. School of Choice is an attractive option for parents across Michigan – providing families with the opportunity to discover the best alternative to meet the specific needs of their children. Fortunately for local families, Niles Community Schools offers an elite, diverse array of educational opportunities to students and families, regardless of the type of learner. Niles’ professional education staff is committed to finding that perfect fit for learners at any age and will collaborate with parents on the best available options to meet their needs. In turn, parents receive peace of mind knowing their child is receiving the vital preparation necessary to succeed as they establish their place in the world. There is strong evidence showing that young children who enter quality Pre-K learning programs are more apt and ready to learn once they start school. At Northside Child Development Center, the Pre-K- K classes partner with local day care providers for training and collaboration and give young ones access to special education programs, Montessori and kindergarten classes. Transitioning into kindergarten and beyond can prove difficult for certain students, which is why Niles provides three effective varied approaches to support children as they continue their journey. Eastside Connections utilizes a Problem-Based learning method for K-8th using the magnet school concept, whereas Ballard Elementary affords K-5th graders opportunities to engage in active and varied learning experiences designed to stimulate whole brain learning. Lastly, Howard-Ellis Elementary provides K-5th graders with leveled reading, multiage classrooms and modern technology integration tools woven into instruction. Each school is as actively involved in children’s learning as the next, but each has honed its own specialty to better suit the potential needs and learning styles of our community’s youth.
helping students shift from the elementary atmosphere to the middle school environment. Once through Oak Manor 6th Grade Center, students enter Ring Lardner Middle School where dedicated teachers engage students by providing an individualized learning experience through looping, which allows students to remain with the same core group of teachers and classmates through 7th and 8th grade. Looping enables teachers to address the unique academic and social needs of young teens. Niles Community Schools is proud to have an excellent high school with different approaches tailored to any learner, including traditional, vocational or those who wish to dual-enroll for an early college start. Niles High School has options for accelerated and advanced students, special needs students, a career and college center and boasts an award winning fine arts program. Niles New Tech is a unique, embedded learning model within the high school that gives high school learners an exclusive experience combining problem-based learning with a culture built on trust, respect and responsibility. Sensitive to the fact that some community members prefer a learning approach that does not require brick and mortar, Niles Community Schools offers an alternative education program for homeschool and adult students, among others. W-A-Y & W-A-Y Forward gives non-traditional 6-12 graders a blended learning program comprised of project-based and online education in tandem with personalized face-to-face instruction. Homeschool students are welcomed to participate in school programs through flexible scheduling, non-intrusive enrollment and specialized programs. At Cedar Lane, high schoolers are offered an environment with lower student/teacher ratios to focus specifically on achievement through improved relationships. Lastly, Niles Adult Education is intended for students 16+ who wish to achieve their diploma or prepare via GED planning tests and basic adult education.
