Icy fun returns to Dowagiac
D
OWAGIAC, Mich. — Life-size works of art will come to life in downtown Dowagiac on Saturday, Feb. 6, as the Dowagiac Ice Time Festival returns to the downtown and shop owners prepare to clear out their winter merchandise. Now in its 20th year, the winter arts festival of the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce has been profiled as one of the many creative ways communities across the nation celebrate the bone-chilling months of winter. Event chairman Kris Soenen said ice carvers and culinary chefs will rev up their electric and power gas tools to transform 12,000 pounds of glistening ice into life-size crystal statues, lining downtown sidewalks. “Carving gets underway at 8 a.m. and continues through much of the afternoon, when artisans compete in a timed carve off from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Beckwith Park, vying for cash prizes.” The winter arts event also features wood and timber carving. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. families can watch a chainsaw timber carver and purchase small, large and extra-large timber art pieces. At Front Street Crossing, members of Fruitbelt Wood Carvers Association will host an interactive display of their work from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. “For children, the winter arts festival offers a variety of attractions throughout the day,” Soenen said. Lil’ Chippers Outside Games will be held on Commercial Street from 10 to 3 p.m. Dowagiac District Library will be the site of Seed Bomb Crafts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At Dowagiac Area History Museum, the Miss Dowagiac Court of Honor will frost cookies with children from 10 to 2 p.m. Children will also enjoy Silly Snowflake Crafts at Who Knew? Consignment from 10 to 4 p.m. and Snow Princess Manicures, presented free of charge, from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Mane Attraction Hair Salon. Caruso’s annual Ice Cream Eating Contest kicks off at 2:30. All ages are invited to grab a partner and try their hand at the Frozen Fish Toss Open Competition on Commercial Street that kicks off at noon. Winners will receive a gift card, courtesy of The Wounded Minnow Saloon. For adults, at Rosy Tomorrows, festival goers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. can assemble a Shabby Chic book stack with area artist Jennifer Valentine of Sacred Cake. Participants will pay a nominal $7 fee for materials. Soenen said if you’re looking to warm up, there’s

nothing better than the Hot Spot and Chili Crawl. Hosted by Dowagiac Department of Public Safety, families can enjoy S’mores over a bonfire from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Downtown restaurants will be bringing the fire during the annual Chili Crawl from noon to 4 p.m., as festival goers vote for their favorite dish. Participating locations include Zeke’s, Beeson Street Bar & Grill, Caruso’s, Woodfire Italian Trattoria, The Baker’s Rhapsody, Front Street Crossing and Wounded Minnow Saloon. Wrapping up the festival is the second-annual Snowball Daddy Daughter Dance at Dowagiac Middle School, hosted by Dowagiac Young Professionals from 4 to 6 p.m. Major underwriters of the 2016 winter arts festival are: Lyons Industries, Platinum Level sponsor; Dowagiac Area Federal Credit Union, Gold Level sponsor; Dowsett Chiropractic Health Center, Silver Level sponsor; along with Chemical Bank and Starts Family Funeral Home, bronze Level sponsors. South Bend band member discusses making music, producing albums
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — The Ember Jar is among South Bend’s finest music creators. The group has been evolving since its formation in 2011 and, on Feb. 5, the group is releasing the latest example of that development with their new single, “Stardust.” Founding members Kevin Scott Joiner and Abby King joined me to discuss the new sounds that they, along with drummer . Vincenzo Carrasco, are , creating. According to Kevin, the band has been placing a particular focus on produc- ing singles. Their goal is to g produce a small number of , songs at one time, allowing them to put their energy into perfecting those releases and continuing to l evolve their sound. e “‘Stardust’ is our first m foray into that,” Joiner said. The “Stardust” single will bring fans a taste of ; the musical direction The - Ember Jar is now taking, l along with a reminder of y where they have been. The single will include a B-Side s titled “No Longer,” one of the first songs that Abby
wrote and a song representative of the “new-wop” style from their earlier days. Abby discussed her songwriting process and the growth that led her to the new song. She described the beginnings of most of her works, starting with a melody and seeking a phrase that would match it. Once mated, she often adjusts the phrase, experimenting with the words until she finds a match that both fits the music and holds meaning to her. “Here’s a melody,” she said. “Now what’s a phrase that fits this melody? What does this phrase mean to me?” She often starts a song without knowing what it will be about, allowing it to grow from the foundation of the music. This process may be slow or fast, with some songs that evolve over long periods of time. She described to me a melody and chorus “that was rolling around in my head for months” before finishing the rest of the process in a single day. Stardust represents for Abby a turning point in her songwriting process, one

where she was “playing around” and intentionally trying a different direction. “I was molding the song,” she said. “The song wasn’t molding me.” She described herself as more focused on R&B and Soul in her earlier music days, eventually finding a connection to Americana music and “remembering how much I loved U2.” The latter was on her mind as she was writing Stardust, leading to a sound Kevin described as “desert music” with “a certain, empty spaciousness.” “It’s like a band playing in a canyon with no one around,” he said. Kevin described his initial influence on the song as less than usual. Once Abby had written the majority of the song, he came in and they finished it together. In past works, Kevin often handled the majority of the musical arrangement, taking her chords, structures, and lyrical ideas and framing them with bass and drums. With the new single, Abby had a specific arrangement in mind, one they worked on together. “Stardust marked a real change where she wanted to jump in and do more,” he said. “It was the first time we both worked on those things together.” The new sound, one representative of the direction the band is going, is one they describe as “soulful, jangle rock.” The word “big” also comes up often when describing the single. They have been enjoying the openness of Stardust when playing it live, a trait that allows them to expand and embellish. The performances have also fed into the evolution of the recorded version. “It’s a little different each

time,” Kevin said. “Stardust leaves so much openness for taking it places.” Stardust will be released on Friday, Feb. 5, both digitally and in limited physical copies. It will be available through ReverbNation. com/TheEmberJar and other digital outlets, with a

‘Seventy-six trombones’ storm the Civic ‘The Music Man’ opens Friday
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — Director David Case is no stranger to South Bend Civic Theatre, and his latest artistic contribution arrives with a parade in Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man.” This six-time Tony Award w inning show has been a family favorite for more than 55 years and it will be performed from Jan. 29 through Feb. 21 in the Wilson Theatre. Tickets are available at sbct.org or by calling (574) 234-1112. “The Music Man” follows fast talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize — this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Case said he has always had a special place in his heart for “The Music Man.” “It was in 1976, the bicentennial year, that I met my wife,” he said. “I was playing Mayor Shinn, and she was a ‘Pick A Little’ lady. Everyone was doing ‘Music Man’ that year. ‘Till There Was You’ was sung at our wedding, and it has always been our song.” But the connection to the classic family musical does not end there. “It was also the first show I did with my children. It was [the Civic’s] first time doing it at the Morris,” Cas said. “I played Marcellus and my kids were in the children’s ensemble. It’s funny and perhaps a little sad, but my children really hate the musical. I guess my wife and I liked the musical so much they got tired of it.” Even so, Case is ecstatic to be leading the “Music Man” parade through SBCT, and he shares a fun fact with us that his oldest daughter wore her mother’s dress from the 1976 “Music Man” production they were in while in a production of “Oklahoma!” he directed for the Civic in 2002, almost perfectly commemorating the 25th anniversary of meeting his wife. Artistic Director Mark AbramCopenhaver echoes the remarks shared by the director. “The joy of offering a classic musical like The Music Man is that it allows one generation to rediscover a wonderful experience that they have had before, as well as sharing that theatrical journey and story with a new generation, whether children or grandchildren, who may not know the story and music,” he said. The cast of volunteer actors is excited to be a part of David Case’s first time in the director’s chair for this musical that has played a major part in his own life. “[The Music Man] has always been one of my favorite musicals. After seeing it many times and being in it three times, I still get goose bumps during ‘76 Trombones.’”

Michigan Eats coming to the Dowagiac Art History Museum D
OWAGIAC, Mich. — We are what we eat and for Michiganders this means pasties, muskrat dinners, Coneys, fish fries, cherry pie and much more. “Michigan Eats: Regional Culture Through Food,” an exhibit at the Dowagiac Area History Museum, will give visitors the opportunity to learn about Michigan food and foodways. The Michigan State University Museum exhibit opens at the museum with an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 4 . What makes a “Michigan food?” After all, there is nothing that all Michiganders eat and only they eat. Michigan foods are those of the many communities — ethnic, regional, local — that constitute the state. Michigan Eats explores the state’s food and foodways by looking at food traditions in specific locales, with particular emphasis on ethnic history and its impact on different communities. The term “foodways” includes the entire complex of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs associated with food, from cultivation to consumption. Michigan Eats uses interpretive panels that convey in words and images many of the diverse food traditions found around the state. The exhibit also includes historic and contemporary objects from the Michigan State University Museum and private collections that illustrate various aspects of Michigan foodways, including ethnic kitchen utensils, packaging from
some of Michigan’s best known food producers and antique fishing equipment. Visitors can also listen to clips from foodthemed songs and stories about Michigan food on the exhibit’s interactive listening station. The Dowagiac Area History Museum will add local food history and stories to the exhibit. “Many of the themes in Michigan Eats tie in perfectly with our local food history. From paczki to mint farming, these are local traditions that the curators of the exhibit also addressed,” said museum director Steve Arseneau. The museum’s exhibit will include many historic artifacts from the local agriculture industry, the fruit belt and some area restaurants. Arseneau is working with Caruso’s to include some of the nearly century-old business’ older candymaking equipment. “What would a Dowagiac exhibit on food be without including Caruso’s, which has served generations of Dowagiac residents?” Arseneau said. Submitted photo/DOWAGIAC AREA HISTORY MUSEUM Michigan Eats: Regional Culture Through Food opens Feb. 4 and runs Pictured is the mess hall at Beebe Farm near Glenwood with a spread of food for through April 30. The open house is from farm workers, circa the early 1900s. 5-7 p.m. on Feb. 4 and will include refreshments, including paczki and pasties. Admission is free. The museum is located at the corner of Division and West Railroad Streets. For more information, contact the museum at (269) 783-2560 or visit www.dowagiacmuseum.info.

Hunter Ice Festival Leader photos/CRAIG HAUPERT
Thousands of people took advantage of the blue sky, sunshine and mild winter weather by visiting downtown Niles this past weekend during the city’s annual Hunter Ice Festival. Attendees tasted Hunter ice cream — the festival’s signature treat made only once a year — and checked out Niles’ unique shops and restaurants while admiring the many ice sculptures placed throughout downtown. The family-friendly fun included timed ice sculpting contests, a chili cook-off, sledding and a miniature snowman crafting station, among many other activities.
