Vintage, new tractors coming to Dowagiac Event part of Under the Harvest Moon festival

OWAGIAC, Mich.

— While downtown Dowagiac may not look much like farmland, a fleet of new and vintage tractors will be heading into town for Under the Harvest Moon, the community’s newest celebration that brings together collectors of antique farm tractors from Cass and Berrien counties, and an open air marketplace of Michigan-grown produce, autumn mums, handmade products and antiques.

Hosted by the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce, the Oct. 10 day-long event is being underwritten by: Creative Vinyl Signs, local grower Charlie Dohm, Dowagiac Area History Museum, Kim MacGregor’s office of Edward Jones, Fifth Third Bank, Forest Glen Assisted Living, Hale’s Hardware, J&H Oil Company, Leader Publications, Mennel Milling Co. of Michigan, Preferred Printing, Skibbe Business & Tax Service, Smoke Vision Care, Southwestern Michigan College, Town & Country Garden Club and Williams A-1 Expert Tree Service.

Vickie Phillipson, cochairman of the event and program director for the Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority (DDA), said she is pleased to welcome members of the Michiana TwoCylinder Club and other collectors of antique farm tractors, along with Ausra Equipment of Dowagiac,

which will be joining the festival for the second consecutive year and will have one of its new units on display.

The approximately 20 to 25-unit display, which will be situated on the north end of Front Street at the Division Street intersection, is expected to include farm implements produced

by John Deere, International Harvester, Allis Chalmers and Keck-Gonnerman.

Michiana Two-Cylinder Club was established in 1990 by a small group of individuals who wanted to share their high regard for two-cylinder John Deere tractors with friends and other enthusiasts, Cuthbert

said.

Dedicated to the preservation and history of vintage John Deere tractors and implements, today the club has 120 members and is affiliated with the Worldwide Two-Cylinder Club located near the John Deere Tractor manufacturing facilities at Waterloo, Iowa.

In addition to those shown by Cuthbert and his father, owners of vintage tractors who have also registered for the event include: Vic Adams and Vic Sells, both of Eau Claire; Jesse Bement, Matt Dohm, Chuck Ernst and David Steele, all of Dowagiac; and Denise and Rich Engel of Stevensville.

In addition to the antique tractor display, Under the Harvest Moon features an outdoor marketplace of handmade products, produce and sweet delicacies, along with family events and live entertainment.

The one-day festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Owners of vintage tractors may place their units on display at the event free of charge. However, for planning purposes they are asked to register their units in advance with the Chamber of Commerce.

ILES, Mich. — The Niles Scream Park is hosting a wedding event on Saturday, Oct. 3, and everyone is invited to join the festivities. Vowing to rot together throughout eternity, “Death” and “Sophia,” the undead bride, will wed in the best spoof fashion.

Events will start at 8 p.m. on the midway of the Niles Scream Park and continue throughout the evening.

Entry is free and all are wel-

Behind the Orange Door Artist welcomes public to view work

EW TROY, Mich. — The public is invited to an open house and reception at Behind the Orange Door Studio from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, to enjoy refreshments while viewing a collection of paintings of New Troy by artist Phyllis Norris.

In 2015, Norris rented studio space from the town’s community center because of its convenience and cost, but quickly found herself inspired by the tiny town’s charm. She and her easel soon became a familiar sight to residents.

Described as folk art by

the proud owner of her first New Troy work — a rendering of the post office and new StarFlower Hair Lounge — the works reflect Norris’ unique interpretation of the town’s primary structures.

These original paintings, as well as reproductions on notecards and postcards, will be offered for sale during the open house, with a portion of every sale to be donated to Friends of New Troy, the non-profit organization that pays for and maintains the town’s community center. Norris has also given the organization

permission to reprint and sell these notecards and postcards to benefit the center.

The community center will be open for tours during Norris’ open house, while across the street, Tashiana Chrysanthus will also hold an open house at her new StarFlower Hair Lounge.

An Irish music session Emmet Cahill of Celtic Thunder to perform at Acorn Theater

HREE OAKS, Mich.

— As is customary in Ireland, if someone starts a tune those who know it join in.

This “sing-song” style is known as an Irish music session - a type of intimate gathering Emmet Cahill plans to bring to the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Michigan at 8 p.m., Oct. 6.

Before carving out his own unique identity as a solo artist, Cahill spent four years touring the states with the Irish music show Celtic Thunder, resulting in three albums reaching No. 1 on the world billboard charts. After the success of his 25-city solo-tour throughout the United States earlier this year, one of Ireland’s most exciting young tenors is headed to Michiana.

“It’s going to be a night of songs and stories, as well as lots of laughs,” Cahill said. “The best part

about Irish music is that most of the songs are based on stories, which is great because so many people in this area can trace their roots back to Ireland. I want the audience to the feel like they are visiting my home when they hear my music.”

Cahill will perform an all-ages show with a lively, acoustic sound featuring traditional Irish folk songs and musical theater.

“There’s a little something for everyone,” Cahill said.

Growing up in a musical household, pursuing a career in music seemed like a natural path for Cahill to take. His father was a musician and his mother a singer. From the tender age of four Cahill began taking music lessons before attending formal classical training at the prestigious Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Aside from making tour stops in 30 states through-

out the past year, Cahill is currently working on an eagerly anticipated debut solo album due to be released by the end 2015.

The Acorn Theater is described as a rare and remarkable performing arts venue that brings a new dimension to entertainment and the arts in Harbor Country. Although Cahill has toured around the world, he said is favorite place to perform is at intimate venues like that of the Acorn Theater where he can truly connect with his fans.

Nido Bianco to host Art-Full Harvest Fest

HREE OAKS, Mich.

— In the words of Nido Bianco director and curator Heather Hanson, Harbor Country and the local region is a “mecca of diversity” in creativity and is “teeming with art people.”

Originally from Illinois, Hanson and her husband were regular visitors to the area who noticed a strong energy in the region. That artistic vibe, especially in Three Oaks, was palpable enough that the couple moved to the area in 2013, wanting to support and participate in the efforts of residents and business owners working to revive the community and “put it on the map.”

Hanson opened Nido Bianco in April 2015, filling an empty building that once housed the likes of J.L. Powell and Vickers Engineering. It is now the home of a gallery and art display spaces, studios for local and traveling artisans, and a venue for events and

Justin Flagel a variety of art classes. She opened with a goal of creating a community-driven art facility that was welcoming to both artists with years of experience and to those who had never picked up a paint brush or a gluegun.

The name, Nido Bianco, means “white nest” in Italian. It was born from the chalky exterior of the building and it’s internal coziness. Hanson describes a warm, comforting energy within the building that

perfectly matched her desired atmosphere. It’s her goal to have something other than “the typical art space” by continuing to build an open, welcoming space for everyone to come in to appreciate and participate in art and creativity; a place where anyone can enter with any skill level or background, pick up a tool, and make something.

“If you put a bunch of creative people together, regardless of medium, something magical will

happen,” she explained.

Nido Bianco hosts permanent, private studio spaces for local artists and transient studio spaces available for rent by day, week, or month. The transient spaces add a social aspect for those looking for a space to produce their art, with an open-air environment that promotes communication and connection. They also give parttime artisans a place to work outside of their homes or usual environ-

ments. The residents in the permanent spaces are also a part of the Nido communal atmosphere, often volunteering to show new visitors around the entire building.

“They’re like docents at the front door,” according to Hanson.

Those visitors will see a variety of fine art, sculptures, and more from artists both local and from further reaches. They’ll also find a selection of handmade and vintage items in the Artisan

Market. Hanson explains that, with exception of products using vintage pieces, nothing in the market is mass produced or made overseas, with each item being hand made and having a history that can be traced to it’s origin.

Examples include pins manufactured from vintage candy tins and hand bags made from ties. The selection is ever changing, with new products added every week.

Nido Bianco offers plenty in the way of experience as well. The stillevolving event space has already been used on a number occasions.

The space, complete with a stage and grand piano, has been used for fundraisers for local groups, including an art show of pieces made by disabled adults for the Gateway Organization and a storytelling event to help launch the new Arts and Education Center in Three Oaks. They hope to continue expanding

EW BUFFALO, Mich. — As summer comes to a close, the New Buffalo Business Association looks to its fall event as an opportunity to bring families back to the area for Columbus Day Weekend and celebrate the changing of the seasons.

In its 10th year, the Harvest & Wine Festival has become an outing for all ages to enjoy, averaging over 6,000 people attending the festival in New Buffalo, Michigan.

The one-day festival offered in Lions Beach Front Park features local cuisine, local artists, crafts, clothing, jewelry, live music and more. Ivan Akansiima is a naturally gifted, multi-talented, self-taught musician (piano, bass, acoustic guitar, drums) from Uganda, East Africa, currently living in South Haven. He began playing music at age 7 as a drummer for his church in his hometown of Jinja. Ivan’s growth and experience as a musician has come from 18-plus years of playing and performing as an accompanist and solo act in churches, concert halls, music festivals, parties, jazz clubs, events, art centers, and schools in over 40 countries. It was during a tour with Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa that Ivan became acquainted with South Haven.

He focused on learning and understanding jazz and its various styles. Ivan obtained an Associates degree from Lake Michigan College this past spring and is currently studying jazz performance at Hope College.

Susan Burkholz is a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Benton Harbor where she first performed on the piano and sang as a child.

She studied piano with local instructors Anne Haupt, Gertrude Brown, and Mildred Fiore. She also studied classical piano with Dr. Michael Coonrod at Interlochen Arts Academy for two years where she graduated from high school. Then she studied piano performance with Professor Balint Vazsonyi for five years at Indiana University.

Returning to her musical roots, Susan is currently the church pianist at First Presbyterian Church in Benton Harbor and has been involved with coordinating ArtsBridge programs since 2011. Susan is also an Administrative Assistant with Child & Family Services of Southwestern Michigan, Inc. where she works with the management team and Board of Directors.

Jean Prosper, who hails from Port au Prince, Haiti, studied classical piano at

Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music in Montreal then at Kingsway College, in Oshawa, Ontario. When he moved to the United States, he continued his studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, and Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. Jean’s musical influences are as diverse as his training. His primary musical influences include classical, gospel, and jazz music.

Even percussive Haitian rhythms can be heard in Jean’s music. Jean currently resides in South Bend, Indiana where he graces the Pilgrim Baptist Church as the congregation’s minister of music. When he’s not leading the Pilgrim Baptist Church band on piano, Jean tours both nationally and worldwide.

Joan Judd has always enjoyed watercolor paintings in exhibitions and art shows. When she turned 65, Joan decided to try her hand at painting with watercolors. She signed up for lessons because she and her husband Bob Judd were planning to take a trip with a Krasl group and painting was an optional activity. Joan enjoys painting scenes from places she has lived and traveled. She also enjoys creating still life paintings of simple everyday objects. Joan has participated in the Chartreuse Artist Coop for several years, something she never thought she would do. Her new venture is exploring painting with oils. “When I’m painting, I’m challenged and time flies.”
