Saving the woods Initiative focused on preservation of Tower Hill Camp

AWYER, Mich. — Deer Creek Open Space Association Chikaming Open Lands and Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy have partnered to place a conservation easement on 32 acres of high-quality forest that is a part of the Tower Hill Camp in Sawyer.

More than 300 neighbors and community members participated in the Save the Woods Campaign, which was kicked off in the summer of 2013 to raise the funds needed to complete the purchase of the property and protect the open space in perpetuity.

Nested near the dunes along the lakefront, the woodland boasts upland forest dominated by red oak, maple and beech trees, and lowland forest featuring tulip poplars and paw paw trees. It is also part of an open space corridor stretching from Warren Dunes State Park to Cherry Beach Road, including COL’s recently acquired Jens Jensen Preserve, located just to the south of Tower Hill.

These corridors provide uninterrupted canopy for migratory bird flyways, allowing natural habitat for the birds to rest and feed during their journeys up and down the lakeshore in the spring and fall.

This past August, DCOSA successfully raised the necessary funds to purchase the conservation easement on the property, which is held by COL. Upon the launch of the fundraising campaign in July 2013, COL stepped forward as the lead donor on the project, pledging $125,000.

DCOSA’s Save the Woods campaign raised more than $530,000 from individual donors and grants from The Carls Foundation, Upton Foundation, Berrien Community Foundation, Donnelley Foundation and Heart of Cook.

easement is on the southern 32-acre natural area of the camp. Tower Hill Camp, DCOSA and COL are dedicated to maintaining the forest at Tower Hill Camp as an outdoor sanctuary in perpetuity.

In 2006, DCOSA approached the Illinois Conference with the idea of protecting the property.

“We promoted the idea of a conservation easement to raise funds for the Tower Hill Camp, and to preserve an important part of their facility, this amazing back-dune woodland,” Beemer said.

After several years of meetings with the Conference board, they decided to move forward with DCOSA’s plan, at which point DCOSA reached out to SWMLC and COL for additional assistance and support.

“The Illinois Conference and the Outdoor Ministry is deeply grateful to DCOSA and COL for their generosity and great work,” said Illinois Conference minister Rev. Dr. Jorge L. Morales. “This will be a part of the legacy we leave — future generations; children; and people of all ages and races will benefit from this act of love.”

Chikaming Open Lands is the local land conservancy dedicated to preserving the open spaces and natural rural character of southwest Berrien County. COL works to protect and restore native plant and animal habitat, improve water quality, and permanently preserve ecologically significant forests, prairies and wetlands, as well as prime farmland and other open spaces in this area.

COL serves nine townships in southwest Berrien County, and has been instrumental in preserving 1,605 acres of open space since its founding in 1999.

Krasl offers warm food, artisan market

— Everyone is invited to get a start on holiday shopping and enjoy a delicious meal at the Krasl Art Center’s Artisan Market and Soup’s On fundraiser Nov. 7 to 12.

The Artisan Market is a fine craft show held each autumn in the galleries of the Krasl Art Center. The traditional Soups On event provides Lake Michigan College culinary arts students an opportunity to show off their hard work and by treating guests to some warm treats.

Premiere party The artisan market kicks off with its “Home for the Holidays” Premiere Party from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday,

Gales of November Museum honors 40th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

OUTH HAVEN, Mich. — The Michigan Maritime Museum will be hosting a Gales of November event beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 10.

Nov. 10, 2015, marks the 40th anniversary of the fateful night for the freighter.

Traditionally, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum honors the lives lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald by holding an event each year on the anniversary date and ringing the Fitzgerald’s bell for each soul aboard.

Leaders say they would like to honor the memory of those men through this collaborative event with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum during this important anniversary. The evening will commemorate the Fitzgerald and other vessels that could not outrun the Gales of November.

To accomplish this goal, the Michigan Maritime Museum has planned a number of activities for the annual event.

Guest speaker Jim Spurr will present his “Ice Water Mansions” lecture pertaining to the perils of a November passage on Lake

Superior. The discussion will begin with the first European shipwreck on Lake Superior in 1816, continues with two sister ships that went down in the same storm a century later, and concludes with a discussion on the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975.

Underwater video footage of the Fitzgerald, provided by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point, will be on display during this event.

Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors. There is no admission fee for Museum members. Light refreshments will be provided.

Be Prepared for Anything Rocky Horror storms Firehouse Theatre

OUTH BEND, Ind. — Live theater brings people together like nothing else can, so says the South Bend Civic Theatre’s leaders.

That sentiment may not only hold true for its latest show, but it may be blown apart altogether.

The cult classic “Rocky Horror Show” will be showcased at the historic Firehouse Theatre running Oct. 30 through Nov. 7. The musical-comedy-horror, which pays tribute to B-movies and science fiction, made popular in Greenwich Village during midnight showings of the late 1970s, follows the misadventures of a straightlaced engaged couple that encounters a night of utter insanity. Local creatives are intending to pay due homage to its storied history and push new boundaries for mature audiences.

“We’re not doing it in a normal way at all. It’s a complete opposite direction,” choreographer Quinton McMutuary said. “We’ve thrown gender, race and body type

to the wind.”

McMutuary noted that the Firehouse space is intimate and will lend itself to an in-your-face style, so audience members should be “prepared for anything.”

“It’s coming along very nicely,” he said. “We’re having a blast, and discovering something new every day.”

The theater fits about 50 people, and with tickets going quickly, the show promises to be as raucous as ever, if not more so.

McMutuary observed that taboos surrounding sex and culture have changed since the film’s original inception.

“We feel desensitized to sex,” he said. “Back then having a transsexual on screen was a big deal.”

For McMutuary and his husband, director Josh Napierkowski, the production is the realization of a dream—they’ve wanted to do this for about five years. The play is an important one for the theatercompany that is hoping to keep with the legacy of shock value set by the original.

McMutuary said he told one 80-year-old friend that it “would be the biggest thrill of her year.”

The show is for adults 18 and over. Tickets are expected to sell out soon.

ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — ArtsBridge will celebrate the 40th anniversary of a Gabriel Kney pipe organ in a special organ concert and exhibit with guest organists Perry Heppler and Paul Flyger at 4 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 8.

The concert will be offered at First Presbyterian Church, 475 Green Ave. on Morton Hill in Benton Harbor.

“We are thrilled to have Perry Heppler and Paul Flyger perform on this fabulous pipe organ and make it really sing!” said Pastor Laurie Hartzell.

Some of the music to be performed includes “Fuge in C Major” by Dietrich Buxtehude, “Sonata II” by Paul Hindemith, “American Folk Hymn Suite” by Michael Burkhardt and the “Afro-Cuban In Thee Is Gladness” by Johannes Matthias Michel.

The program will conclude with a joyful “Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets” featuring trumpeters Steve Reed and Keith Geiman with harpsichord accompaniment

About the organ The Gabriel Kney that will be on display at ArtsBridge’s most recent event is a tracker action 660-pipe organ. It was designed and built in 1975 by the Gabriel Kney Co. Limited of London, Ontario.

The instrument operates by mechanical action and is

thereby known as a tracker organ as opposed to one with electric action. It is among the oldest type of organ building known and uses a method of tone production, which has existed since ancient times. There are two manuals, each representing a small organ of its own, with tonal color providing contrast to each keyboard. This type of instrument is more compact in design with pipes closer together, permitting a better blending of the 10 stops and 16 ranks.

About the artist: Perry Heppler Perry Heppler holds a bachelor of music degree from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey. While at Westminster, Perry studied organ with Donald McDonald and Eugene Roan; he received coaching from the wellknown piano accompanist Martin Katz.

Perry has served as organist at the former First Congregational United Church of Christ of Benton Harbor and First Presbyterian Church of Benton Harbor. He is currently the organist at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ of Lincoln Township. He also teaches organ and Suzuki Method piano.

Perry teaches second grade at Hollywood Elementary School in Lakeshore Public Schools. He has earned Master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education and Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.

He has been a teacher for 37 years, and has taught children from preschool through sixth grade. At Hollywood, Perry has been active in the school garden and has established an after-school reading program at the Spring Lake mobile home community.

Perry and his wife Maria live in Lincoln Township, and

are raising three children, aged 9, 10 and 11, who are also musicians.

he studied with Dr. C. Warren Becker, and as a graduate student his music mentor was both Dr. C. Warren Becker and Dr. Kenneth Logan.

Some of Paul’s professional experience include these facts: He was principal keyboardist for the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra for seven years, he also performed with the Twin Cities Organ Concert Series, and he taught piano lessons and music classes at Lake Michigan College for 13 years. He maintains a private piano studio that includes students of all ages.

Paul also serves as the Director of Music Ministry at First Congregational Church in St. Joseph. Performing as the organist since1993, Paul also works with the Chancel Choir, the Junior Choir and directs three Handbell Choirs.

Now at home in St. Joseph, Paul was born and raised in South Dakota and has spent much time in Arizona, Utah, and northern California.

About the artist: Peyton Hartwig Peyton Hartwig is a Junior at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids where she is majoring in animation and comic design. She is inspired by the work of Edward Hopper, Jack Vettriano, David Mazzucchelli, and Mick Gray.

Although Peyton works primarily with digital, she also loves experimenting with other mediums like graphite, paint, and glass. Peyton began drawing at an early age, but she really got into it when she was in middle school. At that time, Peyton was drawing Japanese Anime, but since then she has grown to love realism.

Peyton won the best Emerging Artist prize for a drawing of a woman with wildly colored hair known as Specular Configuration at this year’s Chalk the Block event held in downtown St. Joseph. “My love of Disney movies has influenced me to pursue animation.”

Patrick’s name has most commonly come to me in reference to The Well, a coffee shop in South Bend’s River Park neighborhood.

Though already known for hosting independent bands and acoustic singer/songwriters, Quigley, after being contacted by the venue two years ago, has helped turn the shop’s basement into a home for punk, hardcore and metal bands, both local and touring. His description of the venue is “like your friend’s basement that was renovated in the ’70s,” with just the right amount edge needed for the music played there.

The Well Basement is entirely donation based. Audience members are charged no cover, instead provided with the opportunity to donate to a tip jar that goes almost entirely to the musicians. With the venue and Patrick, who often operates the sound system, taking no part of the donations, there is almost no overhead to the operation for the musicians involved. The system gives people “a sense of ownership,” because audiences know that shows can only continue with their ongoing support.

“Some people can give a lot and some people can’t, but everyone is welcome whether they can give or not,” he said.

Another distinct feature of The Well Basement is Patrick’s particular passion, allages music. He recalls the years after he graduated high school, when the area’s multiple all-ages shows gave younger crowds

unable to go to bars a place to experience punk rock and independent bands. As that particular generation grew or left the area, “all ages venues weren’t as important any more” and many closed or changed.

This left a void for the next generation, one which Patrick hopes to fill so they can have the same chance to experience music that he had. He wants spaces where “bands can come through and play to high schoolers” and audiences of any age. He also wants to get the new generation involved in booking shows and building a scene of their own.

The success of The Well Basement goes hand in hand with the success of regional music as a whole. Both are dependent upon the continuing efforts of musicians, audiences, and community members that have built the scene that exists today. It is Patrick’s hope to take advantage of the current energy, encouraging it to grow and sustaining it for the new generation as “a place where community comes together.”

Harvest Extravaganza, a free community event for kids and families, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Summit Church.
