— Home-grown hoofers from the Minneapolis arts scene, Rhythmic Circus comes to The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College at 8 p.m., Saturday, October 17 with Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! This dynamic tap and music performance mixes hard-hitting percussive dance and a live rock band and guarantees to enthrall audiences of all ages with its medley of positivity and infectious rhythm.

Three guys and a gal combine rapid-fire tap talent with the funky styling and original lyrics of a seven piece band with a big, brass sound. Add vocal percussionist Aaron “Heatbox” Heaton, the human beatbox, and it’s easy to see why this show earned a 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe Spirit of the Fringe Award.

From an a cappella singing and tap number to a percussive chair routine (think Stomp) to the stripped down “Dream Song,” an acoustic number inspired by a front porch jam session back home in Minneapolis, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! is a genrehopping hour-and-a-half of rock, blues, and soul.

Brilliant staging and integrated choreography is most evident in “Circus,” a crowd-pleaser in which the dancers, decked out in colorful marching band attire, join the musicians in an intense, fast-paced number that features a tuba solo, original vocal lines, and tap breakdowns.

The show helps remind our audiences that there is always a reason to get up, let go, and dance,” said co-creator Nick Bowman. “The name of our show comes from an old New Orleans chant dating back to the early 1900s — a time when the city was rich with culture and spirit.

They literally had parades every Sunday just to celebrate their lives and community. Rhythmic Circus has adopted the chant as more of a rallying cry. We have been ecstatic to see it strike a chord with people everywhere from our home town to OffBroadway and all the way across the globe.”

Although the company’s official inception was in 2007, the troupe’s core members have been collectively choreographing and performing together since 2000. No strangers to the spotlight, they were

recently featured in “Minnesota Original,” a weekly art series on Twin Cities Public Television, collaborated with Vocal Essence in Witness: A Tribute to Duke Ellington at the Ordway Performing Arts Center, and appeared in the Crash Bang Boom!

Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! premiered in August 2008 at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis and went on to tour nationally and internationally, including a recent six-week tour throughout China and 25-show run in New York City at the New Victory Theatre. The ensemble was awarded in two categories of the Minnesota SAGE Awards for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Ensemble and was named the “Best Dance Performance” by the Minneapolis/St. Paul City Pages.

He describes when he first moved to the area, when most of the successful musical acts in the region were cover bands. He contrasts that with a description of a hidden local music scene, a rich one with talented songwriters and artistically-committed musicians in various genres who continue to hone their craft for the love of it. Their efforts are now being recognized by both venues and audiences who are realizing there is much to be offered culturally in our own hometowns.

“We’ve got history here. We’ve had a really rich folk scene. We’ve had a really interesting jazz scene. We’ve got wine and beer and we’ve got venues. It’s not just music. It’s food. It’s arts. Those things support each other.”

Dave describes the challenge at this point as one of how to move forward and take advantage of the current energy. In his mind, the goal shouldn’t be simply one of success for his band or for others in their individual projects. It should be one of unification, elevating everyone in the region to build a culture and a music scene that is specific to this corner of the country.

“I’ve been in multiple scenes where there were a lot of bands that were getting traction.”

He goes on to describe watching many of these bands leave their home area once they found a certain level of success and watching the scene suffer as a result. It is his desire to avoid that, instead seeing those successful bands turn to help each other, for local artists to unite, merge energies, and create a space of their own. The region has its own lifestyle, where community is a part of the culture, and individual artists have their own reasons for staying and creating an art space.

Think French if you want to upgrade your vino

T

here are those who believe if you continue to drink wine, over a number of years you will eventually drink more French vino than others.

Those folks just might be right.

There are many affordable choices in French wine, well-balanced wines which deliver great QPR — or quality-to-price ratio. The Old World style of wine making often offers more balance, less alcohol, and a smoother taste than found from many of the world’s other regions.

The French set the worldwide standard for great wine long before other countries planted a vine.

The great French Rhone wines are some of the finest values and best drinking wines in the world. It’s not difficult to find an awesome Cotes du Rhone in a decent wine shop for $15.

The Languedoc, or Southern France, offers even more choices with wonderful red blends of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. The wines offer an earthier characteristic or perhaps more rustic appeal than the silky Rhones.

Languedoc wines also come with a mid-teen price point.

The French’s best known wine regions are Bordeaux and Burgundy. Getting into those wines at a reasonable price point has always been a major challenge. An experienced wine drinker can pour a student of wine a $15 wine and then a $50 wine and few may be able to tell the difference. The taste dif-

ference between those price points in Bordeaux and Burgundy is much wider than most other regions.

If wine drinkers want to drink, arguably, the world’s greatest wine it means drinking Bordeaux. There are two problems with drinking great Bordeaux wine. The first is the confusing labels and the French’s hard-headed policy of making those labels difficult for the rest of the world to understand. Just

try to find the words Cabernet or Merlot on a bottle of Bordeaux. That isn’t going to happen.

The second problem is price. The top Chateau of France’s Left Bank Medoc wine region, can earn anywhere from $500-$1,500 per bottle. A more concrete example would be a winery of one of the five first growths classified in the 1800s — Chateau Margaux.

Margaux’s varied offerings start at just over $500 a

bottle up to $2400 a bottle for its best Grand Cru Bordeaux blend.

It has taken decades for French winemakers to address its consumer problem and still be profitable.

The top Chateau will always be selling that expensive wine. But that leaves many properties fighting for a growingly smaller piece of the wine consumer dollar or Euro as the worldwide wine market expands.

The Cru Bourgeois was first drawn up in the 1930s and it has come and gone a few times since. The current version of Cru Bourgeois has grown and expanded by finding a niche with a value wine market for more serious wine drinkers.

The Cru Bourgeois du Medoc wines are produced in one of the eight prestigious regions on the Garonne River’s left bank — Médoc, Haut-Médoc,

Listrac-Médoc, Moulis en Médoc, Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac, or Saint Estèphe. The difference with Cru Bourgeois du Medoc is that the average price point is $25.

The wines are made from the same grapes as the great examples from the Medoc region – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Most Cru Bourgeois are Cabernet-Merlot Blends.

The French got serious about the category in the last decade while market share continued to dip with the emergence of great wines from other growing regions outside France’s borders. At last count, nearly 200 different labels were distributed in the U.S. as Cru Bourgeois. So they’re out there folks, you just have to go looking.

Event focuses on art, health Cycle-Re-Cycle, ARS team up for ride

B

ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Leaders in Benton Harbor have teamed up to spread a number of important messages to the community, including safe cycling and the importance of public art.

Their solution, The I Am The Greatest Sculpture Bike Tour with Cycle-Re-Cycle and Anna Russo-Sieber Gallery will kickoff at Cycle-Re-Cycle at noon and end at ARS Gallery on Oct. 10.

Organizers will serve hot cider, apples and donuts after the ride at around 2 p.m. at ARS. This ride is intended to raise awareness about safe

bicycling and public art and the joy of biking.

Cycle-Re-Cycle and ARS Arts & Culture Center are hosting an awareness bike ride, which will tour the I Am The Greatest Sculptures throughout Benton Harbor and St. Joseph on October 10 beginning at noon.

The ride will tour the IATG sculptures created by artist John Sauve’, beginning at Cycle-Re-Cycle, 300 12th St. and ending at ARS, 147 Fifth St., both in Benton Harbor.

While participants munch on fall treats, a new 15-minute documentary will be aired at ARS.

Cycle-Re-Cycle is a nonprofit community bike shop that is driven by volunteer cyclists who are passionate to share the road & life skills build a bigger better bike culture in southwest Michigan.

ARS is a not-for-profit organization that offers arts & culture education, and is the home to the I Am The Greatest Project, which helps educate at-risk youth through the arts.

A frightful night of Eden Springs Park family fun offers ghost tours B

enton Harbor, Mich. — All aboard! If you’re looking for a family-friendly way to celebrate the Halloween season, climb aboard the haunted railway at Eden Springs Park — formerly the House of David — for a spooky, open-air train ride along the historic tracks of the once prosperous amusement park founded in 1908.

When the original amusement park closed in the 1970s, the iconic steam engine and its wooden passenger cars were sold. Having passed through the hands of collectors across the country, the popular historical artifacts have found their way back to Benton Harbor.

After the park was purchased by a private owner in 2009, volunteers worked diligently to restore the old train depot, one of the few buildings on the property that was reparable. Now every summer, the second oldest running miniature railway in the world offers rides to passengers young and old. For the past few years, each October, volunteers at Eden Springs Park transform the park into a spooky spectacular featuring an animated

tunnel of lights, ghosts, and dancing skeletons.

“The original House of David amusement park helped to put Benton Harbor on the map during a more prosperous time and we really feel that it’s something worth saving,” said a spokesperson from Eden Springs Park. “Many visitors used to work at the original amusement park or attended as a child. It moves some people to tears seeing the park being restored and coming back to life – it’s sort of an inspiration for our community.”

Visitors can experience the frightful, family fun on Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 5 until 9 p.m. Rides are $3 per person, children three and under ride free. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to support continued renovations of the park. Light concessions will be available including hot cider, popcorn, and other treats.

As if this wasn’t enough family fun, be on the lookout for a special Christmasthemed train ride in November — specific dates to be determined.

ARBOR COUNTRY, Mich. — As fall brings a sense of quiet to the recently bustling beachside Harbor Country towns, a local organization is inviting everyone to come tour some extravagant kitchens in the region.

Designs for Dignity was founded in 2000 on the belief that every individual should have access to environments that support the wellness of the human spirit.

Because limited resources often prevent nonprofit organizations from creating such environments, leaders at Designs for Dignity work hard to use their creative passions to benefit organizations dedicated to helping others.

Designs for Dignity has transformed a number of spaces housing nonprofits in recent years, including the Michiana Humane Society, which was completed this summer.

To fund these projects, Designs for Dignity hosts a number of fundraisers throughout the year, including the Kitchen

Walk, which invites participants into a number of homes throughout Harbert, Union Pier, New Buffalo and Sawyer.

The 12th Annual Kitchen Walk will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time Saturday, Oct. 17.

The tour features state of the art kitchens and homes that are curated with tastings from local chefs and vendors. The tour culminates with a Wine Down Reception + Auction at Mesa Luna in Sawyer, Michigan.

Check-in will be at Susan Fredman at Home, which is located at 15998 Red Arrow Highway in Union Pier.

Apple Fest Grande Parade

Despite chilly weather and some sporadic rain showers, thousands lined the streets of downtown Niles Saturday for the annual Grande Parade. Several rode floats or walked behind them representing various regional organizations and businesses, and even more set up chairs and blankets on the sidewalks to cheer them on. The theme of this year’s Apple Festival was “Apple Festival Salutes our Troops,” so most floats were ordained with red, white and blue, and dozens of military personnel were featured throughout the parade.
