Brewing passion Pub owner finds unique ways to grow South Bend community

S

OUTH BEND, Ind. — Craft beer pub South Bend Brew Werks opened in September of 2014 as a part of owner Andrew Elegante’s ongoing personal investment in the region. After spending time in computer programming in other parts of the country, he came to South Bend to pursue a new path.

While attending Notre Dame, he found a vibrant city with history and potential, a place to follow his desire to become more involved in community and “be a part of making things happen.”

He saw beautiful buildings, historical homes and a downtown infrastructure ready to evolve. He saw young, energetic, and excited leadership in Mayor Pete Buttigieg and other local figures.

“I was excited about South Bend,” he said. “It has wonderful people and a really engaging community who wants to help.”

Elegante wanted to invest in the city in a way that was more than simply profitable.

He wanted to get involved in promoting South Bend in a positive way that would build community and create civic pride. “It’s really important that you care about a place so that you invest yourself in it,” he said, explaining that citizens with a negative view of their home find it difficult to care and will “shut down”, making it even harder to create positive change. He recalled one of his earliest efforts, helping spread “I Heart SB” buttons by taking bags of them from the mayor’s office and putting them in more prominent areas or

handing them out to people he would meet.

“I want people really invested in South Bend,” he said.

Elegante has worked to weave that same attitude into the daily functions of South Bend Brew Werks, creating what he calls a “very South Bend experience.” His goal is to give a positive visit to everyone who enters, whether they are local or from outside of the area. He wants citizens to be proud of where they live and he wants visitors to go home with a desire to return and to spread the word to decision makers with resources who may want to invest in the vibrant community.

Prior to starting SBBW, Elegante had little experience in the world of brewing. His connection to beer began with his relationship with his older brother and their bonding while trying craft brews. He saw a connection in that experience and the energy of the area.

Opening a brew pub in South Bend was an opportunity to create a venue for a community hub while taking advantage of the emerging local beer industry. He also explained motivations of a more selfish nature, finding personal meaning in being a part of the hard work of making positive

change and creating the kind of community he wants to live in.

“Who wouldn’t want to live in a really cool city?” he said.

Visitors to SBBW are served locally brewed beer and food sourced from around the region. They are greeted with local art on the walls, a playlist of music created by regional talent, and a staff knowledgable about ongoings in the city.

One of their most popular programs is Beer4Good, where beer drinkers are presented with a cap with each purchase and a choice of three jars in which to place it. Each cap represents a donation and each jar represents one of three local nonprofits who will receive it.

This unique method of getting the customer involved in the donation process con-

tinues to raise funds for The Music Village music and dance school, the Neighborhood Leadership Academy, and the Latino/ Hispanic outreach program, La Casa De Amistad.

“We do what we know how to do,” said Elegante, which he described as giving people great food and beer while connecting them with ways to help the community.

South Bend Brew Werks has multiple upcoming events, including a Stout Tap Takeover for International Stout Day on November 5th, a “Design Your Own Stein” party with South Bend’s The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery on November 7th, and the release of their latest South Bend 150th Anniversary inspired beer. ed a Thanksgiving Day Run in the community. It has become a tradition for many people who live or visit the Niles-Buchanan area at Thanksgiving. Last year, 2,185 people from 34 states participated in the three components, or the Kids 1 Mile Fun Run. Proceeds from the Thanksgiving Day Run

support the Strong Kids Campaign, which provides financial support to families through membership scholarships.

Have you tried Indiana wine lately?

Quality improving on consumer-friendly brands

I

ndiana wine producers now boast 80 wineries with more opening their doors annually. Most important, Indiana wine quality has significantly improved over the past 5 to 10 years.

A real emphasis on quality has no doubt driven sales and brought more people to Hoosier tasting rooms. The state’s wineries fall into a few different categories.

There are a few which make truly great wine, a few that really should re-consider corn and beans, a few who grow grapes and many who don’t grow anything.

But it seems there is a vast emerging middle of the pack producing very consumer friendly, if not arguably boring, wine.

Now, there is not anything wrong with that approach. If you make a soft, easy-to-drink wine, you’re probably going to sell a lot of it.

Two such wineries, located in central and south-central Indiana, are Mallow Run and Cedar Creek. Recent visits on a rainy Saturday found both tasting rooms bustling with activity and brisk sales.

Mallow Run, just south of Indianapolis on Whiteland Road near Highway 37, has been around for about 10 years.

Mallow Run has made a name for itself with event marketing. The winery grounds feature eight acres of vineyard and a huge outdoor entertainment venue.

Mallow Run hosts all sorts of music, movie nights, and many other special events. It is close to Indianapolis and packs in the visitors. The wines are definitely well made, if not remarkable.

I started with the semi-

sweet Traminette which was just that. The Rose’ of Corot Noir was nice with just a hint of sweetness. The Chambourcin poured had clearly gone bad. The attendant quickly and politely popped open a fresh bottle.

The wine was light on the palate and light on fruit but nicely balanced.

The best of the lot was the dry Traminette. It seems more Hoosier winemakers are moving to the drier versions. The prominent grapefruit-like flavor was very tasty with the dry approach.

There isn’t much variance in Mallow Run’s prices. All wines are in the $11-$19 range. Nothing on the tasting list sampled disappointed. But none stood out beyond the dry white.

Cedar Creek Winery & Brewery is also just off Highway 37 near Martinsville.

Despite attempts, no grapes grown near the scenic creek are turned into wine. All of the fruit comes from California for this Hoosier winery, but frankly, that’s not unusual.

The wines fall into a similar category with Mallow Run, but they are not as well made. I tasted a Pinot Gris that had nice honeysuckle hints on the palate but a musty, unpleasantness on the nose. The Pinot Noir was also a bottle which had gone bad. The busy person in the tasting room said she would check it out later but didn’t offer to open a bottle for another pour.

The Merlot might have been the best wine of the visit. It was very light in the mouth and I couldn’t detect much oak, if any at all. It would be a great wine for beginners trying to move beyond the sweets. I was intrigued that the win-

ery offered a Valpolicella.

The Italian grape can be magical. The California version was disappointing and not varietally correct.

with Cabernet Franc showing flavors of honey, currants and strawberries.

Though a bit sweeter than I would have liked, the spicy characteristics came through strong for a pleasant sip.

Two stops on one Saturday afternoon show overall quality continues to improve but consistency is still an issue for the Indiana wine industry.

Staymaker offers small-batch, artisan fare

HREE OAKS, Mich.

— Walking into Staymaker, the new restaurant at Journeyman Distillery, in Three Oaks, Mich. is a bit like walking into Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

The full-service restaurant has seating for 125 people, and many of those seats have a view of the expanded production facility that includes a massive liquor still that is five times the size of the original. In order to accommodate the large equipment, sections of flooring were removed, which provides an exciting and open view. Once production begins, diners will be able to get a direct view of the distillery at work.

Since its start in 2011, Journeyman has captivated people across the area with its craft and kosher certified spirits. Their location at the historic Featherbone Factory, where corsets and buggy whips were manufactured, was the source of the new restaurant’s name.

A staymaker is someone who made corsets—and it also appears on the beverage menu as a cocktail comprised of rosemary infused whiskey, acorn squash syrup, orange rind and soda.

“People have long told us of the need for a full-service restaurant here at the distillery,” said owner Bill Welter. “With production currently at capacity on our original still, we immediately jumped at the opportunity when the northern half

of building became available last year. Using the space as both a way to add expanded dining options and more production capacity just made sense.”

Chef Luke Caenepeel said he is excited about the new menu, which is much more expansive than previous limited options at Journeyman. An emphasis on local ingredients through partnerships with

farms in Michigan and Indiana, and using the distillery’s spirits in many of the dishes themselves, unites the fare.

Welter’s wife, Johanna, who can typically be found working alongside other staff decked out in Saturday’s best and blacksmith aprons, described herself as a “simple girl who likes a good burger.”

“Just like our spirits, the food is small-batch and artisanal,” Caenepeel said.

Limited portions of the menu are also available in the distillery’s tasting room, and Caenepeel noted

that many vegetarian options can be found on the menu, too.

Another new addition to Journeyman is an event space for weddings and corporate events. Updated details and vintage ones combine for a unique space that offers panoramic views of the beautifully

pastoral surround area. At sunset the backdrop of the space seems taken straight from the canvass of a painted landscape. In the first three and half weeks, eight weddings have already taken place.

Staymaker had its grand opening on Halloween, and is officially open to all.

Birds of Chicago set to open for Rhiannon Giddens at Four Winds

N

EW BUFFALO, Mich. — Rhiannon Giddens will take the stage Friday to perform pieces of her album she describes as a “tribute to American music,” but not before another music group performs at the Four Winds Casino.

Roots band Birds of Chicago is scheduled as the opening act for the upcoming concert by Rhiannon Giddens at Four Winds New Buffalo’s Silver Creek Event Center at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

Rhiannon Giddens is best known as the powerhouse lead singer of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and is quickly staking out her territory as a solo artist.

In February 2015, she released her solo debut album “Tomorrow Is My Turn,” from Nonesuch Records. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett and features songs

such as “Waterboy,” “Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind,” and “She’s Got You.” The album incorporates gospel, jazz, blues, and country, plus a hint of proto-rock

and roll.

Birds of Chicago has been called “This year’s biggest roots surprise” by the Los Angeles Times.

The band is a collective built around husband and wife duo JT Nero (Chicago, Illinois) and Allison Russell (Montreal, Quebec). Since forming in 2012, they’ve toured internationally 10+ months of the year.

The duo describes its music as “rock and roll poetry,” and critics say it is difficult to categorize. The band’s self-titled album released in early 2013, and traveled for a year before deciding to record a live album, “Live from Space,” which released in January 2015.

Americana UK said the album “leaves no genre unaccounted for,” with tracks that could fit a long list of genres including A Capella spiritual, driving country ruck, acoustic balladry and soul.
