Craftsman to teach boat building basics
S
OUTH HAVEN, Mich. — The Michigan Maritime Museum will be hosting speaker Allen Deming, master craftsman and owner of Mackinaw Watercraft, LLC for his presentation entitled, “You, Can Build a Wooden Boat” as part of our annual Lecture Series. In this presentation, Deming will share his insights on the tools, the time and the talents you will need to build the two most popular types of home built wooden boats. Deming will also direct you to the best places for instruction, mentoring or DIY resources. You will also be provided with information about the most reliable sources to buy plans and materials. This multi-media presentation, developed in the last decade of building and teaching wooden boat building, will answer your questions and encourage future boat builders of all skill levels. After a long career in corporate sales, Deming turned a wood working hobby and a love of the outdoors into a small business. Deming designs, builds and markets custom wood canoes, kayaks, rowing boats and paddles. Mackinaw Watercraft was born in 2007 and it is a full time venture for its owner. Mackinaw Watercraft offers only Deming’s handcrafted designs. His Mackinaw Watercraft Canoe and Kayak College teaches stu-
dents of all backgrounds to build stripbuilt boats and paddles. In the past few years Deming’s boats and paddles have drawn recognition as objects of art, culminating in his “The One Tree” kayak and “The Gift of the Turtle” canoe being chosen for display in the 2014 and 2015 Grand Rapids ArtPrize competitions. Deming’s mission is to use wooden boats to foster a closer relationship between the paddler and nature. Allen Deming will be speaking on the Michigan Maritime Museum Campus February 27th from 12-1pm. Join the Michigan Maritime Museum for what is certain to be an excellent lecture. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors. There is no admission fee for Museum members. Light refreshments will be provided. Become a member and attend each additional lecture at no cost. It is the perfect time to become a member! A lifelong passion
“T
he way it was described to me is that I was singing before I was talking.” The love of music is deep rooted in musician James Neary. He recounts hearing stories about himself humming melodies as a child while sitting in his parent’s truck. He describes his parents both as “musical” people. His father has been playing guitar for 35 years in cover bands and original bands. His mother has a background playing violin, oboe, and other instruments. Neary also noted her talent as a singer. He describes the environment he was raised in as one full of music. “Getting into music was never...I wouldn’t even call it an option,” he said. Neary pursued singing as early as elementary school, performing in the choir. While in the sixth grade, he auditioned and qualified for the state choir in Indiana. He described the experience as important, as it was his first taste of professional production and organization. He still recalls vivid descriptions of the lighting and the stage at the Indianapolis event. “Everything was bathed in gold,” he said. “From the stage, you could just barely see the audience and I remember thinking ‘this is really cool.’” Changes in schools led him away from the choir, but he continued his musical pursuits, with the violin being his first instrument in high school. He also credits his instructor, Pete Collins, for helping him hone his musical skills. He described the amount of time spent learning the instrument, playing during orchestra classes in school and practicing for hours at home. He explained the instrument as a fortunate place to start, as it taught him a finesse he might not have picked up had he started with the more forgiving guitar. “I started to figure out musicality a little bit,” he said, describing the violin’s precise requirements for playing a certain note. “It’s also the joy of being able to

It taught me nuance.” Neary eventually did add guitar to his skill set at the age of 16, enticed by the instrument for the reasons that most teenagers find it attractive. He picked up his own guitar from a friend who was no longer using it. He describes his musical pursuits at that time as “fun,” telling me he mostly played for himself. An encounter during a school play, however, would push him further into musical creativity. During a school production, Neary had a part that took advantage of his skills with a violin. Another member of the cast, Ryan Trost, approached him about playing music and the two became close friends. At the young age of 15, James' new friend was already writing songs and inspired him to write his own. The two would continue to write, make music, and inspire each other until Ryan’s passing. “He was a hugely vibrant person,” Neary said. “His capacity for understanding music at fifteen was incredible. latched onto songwriting so hard and fast. It blew my mind.” Neary continued his musical pursuits, continuing to improve his writing and practicing in front of audiences at open mics. He found success winning open mic contests, earning prizes in what he referred to as “the start of being paid for music.” He would also go on to win the 2013 Acorn Theater Singer Songwriter Competition, which led him to the release of his first album, 2013. His roots from his parents, instructors, and musical peers continue to push him in perfecting his craft. Upcoming projects include an EP and a second full album.

DETERMINATION
EDUCATION
1. Avoid Slippery Conditions: Make sure floors are not slippery. Put down non-slip floormats in your bathroom and install “grab bars” in bath tubs and showers. Also install mats at the entry points to your house so floors don’t get slick on rainy and snowy days. 2. Remove tripping hazards: Electrical cords, rugs that don’t lie flat, and poor lighting are common causes of falls within the home. Make sure your light bulbs are the proper watt age and install nightlights to illuminate your floors at night. 3. Use a medical alert system: Medical alert systems provide affordable, one-touch access to emergency personnel. Should you need help, simply press a button on the medical alert bracelet or necklace and you’ll be connected to to a trained emergency specialist. 4. Get to know your neighbors: You don’t have to be best friends, but if you and your neighbors get to know each other, all of you are more likely to notice when something is awry. 5. Organize a daily check-in: Ask a loved one or friend to call each day to make sure everything is okay. You can offer to do the same for them. If you don’t have a reliable person, your medical alert system offers a service to check in with you once a day. 6. Put a lock box on your door: A lock box allows family members, friends, trusted neighbors and emergency personnel to access your home when you’re unable to get to the door. 7. Keep lists of medications, allergies and personal information in your wallet or purse: This information can be invaluable to emergency medical personnel when they come to your home, especially if you’re unconscious or unable to communicate.

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Southwestern Michigan College Art Professor Emeritus David Baker presents “A Sense of Place,” two brisk suites of 2015 watercolor paintings, at St. Joseph’s PechaKucha Night at the Box Factory for the Arts, 1101 Broad St., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11. PechaKucha Nights present 20 images, each for 20 seconds, in a PowerPoint presentation style which originated in Tokyo in February 2003. Baker, who recently moved from Dowagiac to St. Joseph, did his first group of paintings on location at Jean Klock Park. These were exhibited at Terrazzo Gallery in June. The second suite, just completed, has never been publicly displayed. “A Year at Shoreham Village” is a 12-month odyssey inspired by the cove and bluff along the shoreline near Baker’s new home. Besides teaching at SMC for threeand-a-half decades, Baker is a faculty member of Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck and at The Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph. He creates artwork in a variety of media, principally watercolor, oil or charcoal. Much of his recent work strives to express the poetry of the local landscape or bodies of water. Baker frequently works outside from direct observation. His portfolio can be viewed online at www.dbakerart.com PechaKucha — Japanese for “chatter” — has spread to more than 800 cities around the world, helped by a limited number of public spaces where people can
show and share creative works in a relaxed way. In other locales, PechaKucha Nights have taken place in restaurants, bars, clubs, beer gardens, homes, studios, universities, churches, prisons, beaches, swimming pools and even a quarry. Images advance automatically in the format devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture as a way to keep architects and other creative types from talking too much. Their six-minute-and-40-second time limit keeps PowerPoint presentations concise and fast-paced. Anyone can present. Astrid’s daughter showed her artwork at 5. Mark’s mom presented at 69 on elaborate wedding cakes she created. The key to a great presentation is to share something you love. Buchanan event a success in spite of warm weather
b
By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert@leaderpub.com
uchanan, Mich. — A brief warm spell did not dampen the excitement for the many people who visited downtown Buchanan for the city’s annual Thrill on the Hill event Friday and Saturday. Children of all ages — and adults too — hopped on tubes and slid down the snow-covered Front Street hill, which was closed to traffic for the occasion. The event featured three hills of varying sizes so everyone could enjoy the day no matter how young or old. Now in its fifth year, the Thrill on the Hill brings in thousands of people to discover all the city has to offer, including its many shops and restaurants.
