T. JOSEPH, Mich. — Anxious to see winter end? “Then call your mother. Call your sister. Call your girlfriends and meet March 11-13 in St. Joseph,” said Whitney Behnke, executive director of St. Joseph Today. “Our downtown is welcoming spring by helping women of all ages embrace their inner diva.” Diva Days — a Women’s Weekend — is a collaborative celebration hosted by the Lake Michigan resort town’s restaurants, stores and hotels. It gives ladies dozens of reasons to come together for pampering, shopping and entertainment. “While it’s fun to plan for a girl’s night out, it’s really a great excuse for ‘the girls’ to stay the weekend with each other,” Behnke said. She added that many of the community’s lodgings are within walking distance or a short, easy drive of the activities. Reservation information is available at stjoetoday.com/sleep. Behnke said the first 150 women to purchase their ticket for the Friday night event will receive dynamite Diva Swag Bag filled with special discounts and offers at participating locations. “This year we have so many great offerings for our divas! We have two main events planned, a fashion show on Friday night and unique entertainment experience on Saturday. This is a weekend ladies will not want to miss.” Ticket prices for the events are $36 for the Spring Fashion Show and Exclusive Shopping and $40 for

Chardonnay offers array of flavor for every palate
M
ention Chardonnay and images of litCOLUMNIST tle old ladies sipping the yellow-ish wine at Tuesday card club comes to mind. Or the world’s most planted white grape may conjure up mental images of the wine-country Bachelorette party. No grape is more loved nor hated than Chardonnay. For many years, often still prevalent, is an entire group of wine drinkers identifying Howard Hewitt themselves as ABC conGrape Sense sumers — Anything But Chardonnay! Chardonnay is even more dominating than many would guess. If consumers think of wine and California, they generally think of the king of grapes Cabernet Sauvignon. But guess what, Chardonnay is the most planted grape in California with Cabernet second. Chardonnay is popular, in part, because it offers an array of flavors. Depending on style, the palate might discover lemon, pear, apple, pineapple, peach, citrus, honeysuckle, minerality, almond and the list goes on and on. If the Chardonnay is oaked then expect vanilla, gbutter, butterscotch, and caramelization. - Winemakers around the world grow and produce Chardonnay in a multitude of styles to appeal to consumers or to represent the area — think terroir — nwhere the wine grapes are grown. y So for a bit of education let’s compare the two extremes — California’s iconic oaked chardonnay versus the mostly-unoaked Chablis of Burgundy, France. - While the trends, even in California, is somewhat saway from the big, buttery, and oaky Chards, there is .still a market for those classic wines. What has happened in recent years is a mixture of oak and stainless )steel to create a somewhat softer version of the taste -you know. In addition to oak aging, Chardonnay often undergoes malolactic fermentation. But let’s not make this

chemistry or complicated. Malolactic fermentation means using a different type of yeast to create a softer tasting wine than one which is more acidic. Those creamy, round soft Chardonnays from Napa most likely underwent malolactic fermentation. Traditional oaked chard pairs wonderfully with chicken, soft cheeses, herbed fish, pork, and turkey. In the small village of Chablis, in northern Burgundy, chardonnay is Chablis. Chardonnay is all about minerality and acidity — no butter and creamy sips for the traditionalists. The Chardonnay grapes of Chablis come from a relatively small area. The wines are aged in stainless steel or decades old cement vats. Some of the wine is oaked but it’s usually neutral oak that does not impart the strong vanilla and woodsy taste. And often Chablis is a blend of the traditional and oak aging methodology. There are wine writers and Chablis old-timers who will vehemently proclaim Chablis as the greatest white wine in the world. One of my most memorable wine experiences was centered on this discussion during a 2012 fall visit. Wine icon Bernard Billaud was meeting with a small group of wine press folks and being pushed on the younger winemakers uses of some oak. The older statesman of Chablis became a bit aggravated and said, “If you’re not talking about acidity and minerality,” and then he growled, “you’re just making Chardonnay.” Chablis, or unoaked Chardonnay, is a better match with shell fish and sharp cheeses. The best sipper is debate centered on stylistic preferences. To suggest California and Chablis are the two primary styles of Chard isn’t too much of a stretch but there are many wines made in styles at all points between the two. There are interesting Chards from California’s Central Coast, Oregon, South America and New Zealand.

Making musicians Ember Jar members recount path to art
A
bby King grew up in what she described as a “musically gifted family” and started to sing at a young age, performing in choirs and singing on her own for fun. The hobby would stay with her and, as she grew into her craft as an adult, she purchased a ukulele in order to work on songwriting. Taking the leap into performing before a crowd at an open mic led her to meeting Kevin Joiner, with the two forming South Bend’s The Ember Jar in 2011. She had grown up in South Bend and moved back to the area after the end of a long relationship. She had only written one song and had purchased the ukulele only days earlier when she first attended that open mic. Kevin, who had been dealing with his own setbacks both in relationships and his music career, was COLUMNIST working at the cafe, Quincy’s, and ran the event. “She just blows everybody away,” Kevin said, describing the power of her singing voice. “And the song itself was fantastic.” “I had never even been to an open mic before and I didn’t know what to expect,” Abby said. “I only came with that one Justin Flagel song and I got done and everyone was like ‘that’s it?’ That’s why I wrote my next songs. I figured I better get some more.” Abby’s instrumentation started on the smaller soprano ukulele, with her efforts focusing mostly on lyrics. She described the instrument as one she was not very serious about, needing it mostly as a tool to help her along with her songwriting. She chose the ukulele for the simple technique it required to play the chords necessary to help her do the work of lyricism. In the early days of The Ember Jar, she would concentrate on lyrics, with Kevin translating the music to guitar. “I’m really a singer, a songwriter at heart,” she said, describing her attitude at the time. “I’m not an instrumentalist.” She described the change that occurred when Kevin purchased for her the larger, baritone ukulele as a gift. The purchase was made because the instrument, more similar to a guitar, made it easier to take new music out of the writing phase into the transition for the full band. The substitution quickly became a more integral piece of the band, allowing Abby to take over parts of the rhythm, giv-

Kevin Ioiner, left, and Abby King, right, with drummer Vincenzo Carrasco make up The Ember Jar. ing Kevin more freedom to expand his role on the guitar. “I played around with it for a while,” Abby said. “Once I wrote my first song on it, I was totally in love with it. Now I’m excited to play out more.” Kevin too came from a musical family, with his mother and sisters all singers and his father a singerguitarist. His father had him playing on stage as a young child, leading Kevin to a career in songwriting and performance, as well as a variety of other creative pursuits. He points his influences to the wide variety of music he listened to growing up, from the records his parents played to the music he heard when sneaking into his sister’s bedroom to listen to her albums. The addition of drummer Vincenzo Carrasco has given the band a larger sound, one which their fans are responding to positively during live shows. Carrasco himself came from a musical household, with his mother a professional oboist and his father an enthusiastic
dancer. He took up the drums at age 19 and played in multiple bands. He would receive instruction and guidance from local Motown Legend Billy “Stix” Nicks and West African percussion master Mamady Kieta. Together, the band is showcasing their expanding sound around the local area, as well throughout the Midwest and into the South. They are working on new music that is growing out of the larger line-up of the band and their continued maturation as musicians. You can find more information on upcoming live shows and more from The Ember Jar by visiting facebook.com/TheEmberJar.

Film lovers set sights on Berrien County
Coastline Children’s Festival returns March 11–20
B
ERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — The Coastline Children’s Film Festival in collaboration with Krasl Art Center announces the unveiling of the organization’s sixth annual international children’s film festival. This one-of-a-kind family event takes place in nine locations in Berrien County and beyond, from March 11 through March 20. Six years ago leaders were inspired by the 8½ Foundation — founded by Tilda Swinton and Mark Cousins — and their efforts to make great films available to young people everywhere. In their words “not the bigger films blasted from the rooftops of every seventeen-screen pleasure palace, but littler films, often from other countries, maybe made many decades ago, maybe made without color, maybe with subtitles, or not a single spoken word.” That idea became a mandate, a manifesto. For 10 days, CCFF will provide 75
sources of inspiration — all for free ($1 suggested donation) and will include fulllength features, cocumentaries, silent classics and shorts. This year the festival will present a host of outstanding films for the whole family, many for the very young and some appropriate for middle and high school students; all will delight and inspire. Organizers are again presenting the best and latest short films from the worldrenowned New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF/ GKIDS). They include a kaleidoscopic showcase of the best short film and animation from around the world, for ages 3 to 8 (KID FLIX) and a selection of the most entertaining, thought-provoking and visually stunning short films for children ages 8 to 18 (PARTY MIX). This collection of award-winning shorts will be presented at several locations. Guests are invited to wear pajamas and fluffy slippers and bring their favorite

Family fun on tap in Cass County
Maple Row Sugarhouse celebrates season
J
ONES, Mich. — As winter comes to a close, a Cass County farm is inviting Michiana residents to taste the sweet success of the season. On Sunday March 13 and Sunday, March 20, everyone is invited to Maple Row Sugarhouse in Jones, Michigan for Tap-A-Tree events, in which families can tap maple trees and collect the sap. Maple Row began production in 2011, starting with four maple trees in the front of the old farm house. The next year, the business added a few hundred taps on farm properties adjacent to the Olson Farm in Cass County. This spring, Maple Row Sugarhouse leaders are processing maple sap from about 10,000 taps, including a large number of taps in Russ Forest, thanks to a lease by Michigan State University, who maintains the park. The farm that houses four generations of Olsons is the site of all the business’s maple syrup production and sales. The Sugarhouse has a Lapierre evaporator, capable of producing 100 gallons of syrup in one hour. This natural syrup is then sold as a whole food. Additionally, Maple Row Sugarhouse creates maple sugar, maple cream, maple candy and more maplerelated treats, including the company’s
newest product, a maple syrup infused with coffee beans, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks and several dried fruits. Leaders say the infused syrups are great on ice cream, as sweeteners or as salad dressing. Maple syrup products will be available for purchase during Maple Weekends March 13 and 13 and March 19 and 20. These weekends are family events in
which the whole family can enjoy maple treats and learn how the syrup is made. There will be a pancake and sausage breakfast each morning beginning at 8 a.m., and a maple luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, the Newberg Fire and EMS will provide an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast, with all proceeds benefitting the volunteer fire
department and EMS. This breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Also beginning at 8 a.m., bus tours will take guests to the properties that are tapped. Maple Row Sugarhouse is located at 12646 Born St., in Jones Michigan. Find more information at maplerowsugarhouse.org.
