ArtsBridge celebrates spring
B
ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — ArtsBridge, a celebration of the arts, will present a spring concert and exhibit at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, at First Presbyterian Church, 475 Green Ave. on Morton Hill in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The program will begin with classical and jazz selections performed by pianist Tim Giessner. Then the All God’s Children Community Choir will perform. The teen ensemble will sing first with “What Must Be Done,” “Get Up” and “Oh, Oh Give Thanks.” Then the full choir will sing “Welcome Table,” “Peace is the World Smiling,” “Give a Little Love,” “Oh Fill It Up,” “With Two Wings,” and “We’re All a Family.” Photographs by John Gatto featuring expressive nature scenes and Benton Harbor’s historic landmarks will also be on exhibit and for sale. “ArtsBridge is a vehicle of reconciliation and joy in a region that is often known for its divisions and brokenness. When people come together from various walks of life to celebrate and enjoy each other’s artistic talents and gifts, hope is born again,” said Rev. Laurie Hartzell. A reception will follow the program. For more information, call (269) 925-7075, visit the website FirstPresBH.org or find it on Facebook at First Presbyterian of Benton Harbor. Tim Giessner has been playing the piano for more than 10 years, and has amassed a large repertoire from Bach and Gershwin to Chopin and Bolcom. He is an eight-time district winner in the National Guild of Piano Teacher’s National Piano Auditions, a multi-year participant in WMU’s SEMINAR music program for promising young musicians, and has accompanied many local musicians and organizations including Bridgman middle and high school choirs, and All God’s Children Community Choir with whom he also sang. Currently a freshman at Michigan State University, Tim is double majoring in political science and political theory and constitutional democracy at James Madison Residential College. He plans to attend law school and pursue a career in public service. Despite his busy schedule at MSU, Tim still enjoys playing the piano whenever he stops by the music building or discovers a piano in one of the many residence halls on campus. All God’s Children Community Choir is a spirited group of talented and enthusiastic children and teens ages 5 to 18, drawn from many different communities in

southwest Michigan. Led by a diverse team of directors, the choir is now in its 16th year, inspiring audiences with its messages of brotherhood and sisterhood, unity, peace and respect for all people. Since the choir’s initial performance at the Race Relations Council Awards Program in 2001, All God’s Children has performed on more than 150 occasions. These special events have included performances at Lake Michigan College and Andrews University to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; a special Habitat for Humanity performance for former President Jimmy Carter; concerts in Grand Rapids and Traverse City for state and national teachers’ conferences; joint appearances with the Chicago Children’s Choir in Michigan and Chicago; a Holiday Traditions concert with the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera Star Angela Brown; a featured performance at Navy Pier in Chicago on Martin Luther King Day; multiple ArtsBridge concerts and performances with recording artists Tom Chapin, Josh White, Jr., Gemini, Peter Yarrow, and Pamela Chappell with whom All God’s Children recorded an award-winning CD. In 2013 the choir released its own CD, titled "All God’s Children." This year, the Teen Ensemble of the All God’s Children Choir has released an exciting new CD of its own. In 2015, All God’s Children was granted an anonymous donation of $250,000 to the Berrien Community Foundation for the establishment of the All God’s Children Choir Scholarship Fund. This fund will greatly expand the possibilities for college-bound choir members by making available up to $10,000 over their four years of college attendance. The All God’s Children Community Choir is led by Sandy and Larry Feldman, Hursel Cole, Corey Hampton, Kortney Moore, and Liz Giessner. John Gatto grew up in eastern Iowa and was launched into photography at the age of six, when he found his parent’s old Argus Seventy Five twin-lens reflex camera in the basement. Pursuing black and white photography and darkroom work though high school and college, he returned to photography with the advent of digital imaging. “Image editing tools let you carry the world’s most powerful darkroom on a laptop computer. It changed the game for everyone who wanted to create compelling images,” he said.

SMSO brings back Dancing with the Symphony Stars
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra is hosting an evening of cocktails, dinner, live and silent auctions and dancing. Local celebrities will be paired with dancers from The Citadel Dance & Music Center to compete for the coveted Mirrored Ball Award. Organizers say this dazzling event promises to provide a memorable evening filled with fun and entertainment. Dancing with the Symphony Stars will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Inn at Harbor Shores, 800 Whitwam Drive, St. Joseph, Michigan. MEET THE STARS Whitney Behnke Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZSVAA2 Good things seem to happen to Whitney Behnke when she comes to St. Joseph. Her husband, Matt, proposed to her on Silver Beach. And now the community has provided her with a position as the new executive director of St. Joseph Today. Whitney’s self-declared “year of yes” landed her a spot on Season Three of DWSS. While neither are technically trained in dance nor all that coordinated, Whitney hopes her enthusiasm (and hopefully her partner) will carry her through to a successful routine. Lisa Cripps-Downey Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZRhAAM As the president of the Berrien Community Foundation and the director of the Upton Foundation, Lisa has danced her way through many community issues … knowing it takes all of the Village People to make it work. With a theory of “what’s the worst thing that could happen?” Lisa said she joined the competition willing to try just about anything. Her last stage appearance was with Twin City Players as a singing, tap dancing nun in "Nunsense" and says really, after dancing in a habit, she can no longer be embarrassed by anything.

He currently is chair of the OutCenter board, current past chair of the Michigan Center for Assisted Living board, and previously has served as treasurer of the Citadel Dance and Music Center board. Alex Grumbine Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZSzAAM Alex Grumbine is a native of southwest Michigan. He attended St. Joseph High School and later went to Michigan State University to study Supply Chain Management. After college, he returned to St. Joseph and has worked at Kinexus for four years and is currently serving as the director of business and industry. In his free time, Alex enjoys golfing, running, spending time with family and friends and being actively involved in the community.
Patricia Muellen Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZSfAAM Todd Dockerty Patricia says it has always been a Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ dream of hers to dance on stage ever since donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZSaAAM she was a little girl. Then again, Patricia Todd is the COO of Dockerty Health has aspired to be a dancer, a doctor, a Care Services that owns and operates veterinarian, a famous singer, a model
(which she did get to do) and an actress (she still acts from time to time). She says she has also always wanted to be a musician, a beautician, a TV news anchor, a marine biologist, a cruise ship captain, a casino host, a comedian (which she thinks she totally is) and an international criminal or super-secret spy, so instead of all those things she became a chamber of commerce director. After sustaining a serious injury last year (foot was broken protecting a bus load of orphans against a violent gang. OK. Her dog stepped on her foot.), she has traded her crutches in for some dancing shoes! Not being the most coordinated person in the world Patricia said she decided to take on a dance that was as fast paced and very complicated. Anything for charity! Mary Ann Pater Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZTEAA2 Mary Ann said her motivation for joining Dancing with the Symphony Stars is to stop embarrassing her children when she takes the dance floor. Growing up she always envied the dance moves of her parents, Bud and Jean Borre. Sadly, Mary Ann did not get those genes. Her husband, Joe, has hopes that this training will stop her from always trying to take the lead when they are dancing. Although way out of her comfort zone, Mary Ann hopes her performance will raise
Randy Reimers Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZT4AAM By day Randy serves as vice president of Fifth Third Bank but by night, this thrills-seeker can be found practically anywhere — land, sea or air. At the age of 50, Randy ran his first 10K, learned the art of barefootwater skiing, went skydiving and deep sea diving! That's not too shabby for someone who describes himself as “pretty boring!” Randy is married (25 years) and the father of three children, two of whom have graduated from MSU and one who is currently a sophomore there. It would seem a safe bet that Randy is a raving Spartan fan. Randy was asked to be a dancer last season but had to back out due to a terrible snowmobile accident. Not only did he break his back in five spots, he shattered every rib on his right side! The doctors declared he had a 50/50 chance of walking again. Randy is humbled and grateful to God that he is able to participate in this year’s DWSS! Greg Zyjewski Vote: https://smso.secure.force.com/ donate/?dfId=a0pd0000007aZT9AAM Greg grew up in Michigan and attended Michigan Tech where he met his wife Mae. After graduation they married and have lived all over the country including Ohio, Texas, Illinois, Arkansas and finally Michigan. Watch out, fellow dancers, this means a multi-state fan base! Married for 36 years, they have two grown children, Matthew and Helen. He works at St. Joseph Catholic Church and is the organist and director of Music and Mae works at Whirlpool Corporation. Greg has been a church musician for more than 40 years, which accounts for the rhythm in his heart transferring through his fingers and, now to his lighter-than-air feet. He and his family are all musicians playing piano, organ, flute, bassoon, or oboe. In addition to playing the piano and organ, Greg is always busy — visiting with friends and traveling — and tackling household projects. Can’t you just imagine how he keeps time with the hammer and saw?

Shifting to a two-man show
T
hough it is not the first release from Analecta, their upcoming album is a new journey for members Patrick Quigley and Calvin Maloney. Titled “aes sídhe,” it represents the first full length release from the South Bend band since their transition from three members to a two-piece group. “We were at a crossroads,” Patrick said, in reference to the exit of the band’s guitar player in 2013. “Do you keep the band name? Do you scrap it all and start over?” He described the band as a “pretty even collaboration of three individuals.” It would be difficult to exist without one member, but they also wanted to hold on to all that they had invested in the music and in the name. In the end, they decided to continue on, knowing they had years of playing together to count on as a foundation. “A lot of the music is

The framework gave them a specific number of songs to aim for as they set out to write the album. The new album will be released on Monday, April 4. stylistically very similar,” Calvin said. “The big difference is the implementation of a lot of electronic sounds into our music,” Patrick said. Analecta is still entirely instrumental. The big change comes in a shift from guitar-based into more electronic sounds. Patrick added a drum machine, synths, and samplers and Calvin added synths along with his guitar. The duo took on multiple tools and
instruments each in order to fill the space left by having one less member. The core of the band, heavy, distorted, and atmospheric sounds, remains. “Kevin definitely brought a lot to the band,” Patrick said, in reference to their former guitar player. The band describe’s Kevin’s departure as a loss, but also as an opportunity. Both Calvin and Patrick described themselves as experimental,
often delving into sounds that may not appeal to a broad audience. Kevin often helped keep their sound grounded. “I’d have some off the wall ideas, things that put us out into left field,” Patrick said. “We’ve always had a more rational voice in the band that keeps our music more accessible. But let’s take this opportunity to do whatever we want to do.” They described having a mad dash of writing after losing Kevin in

'Feels Like the First Time' I
By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak@leaderpub.com
t has been 40 years since Foreigner released its first album “Feels Like the First Time.” There may be only one member remaining in the group, but Mike Jones is still rocking and there seems to be no signs of slowing down if 2010’s “Can’t Slow Down” album is any indication. Foreigner will be performing at the Silver Creek Event Center April 8 and will be bringing its full “rock” show to New Buffalo according to Tom Gimbel. Foreigner has also been doing acoustic shows as part of its 40th anniversary tour, but fans will get the full show, which includes a performance of “I Want To Know What Love Is” with the Bridgman High School choir. Foreigner is donating $500 to the choir for appearing with the band and will be selling Foreigner CDs at the concert to
help raise money for the band’s charity partner, The Grammy Foundation. The Grammy Foundation is helping keep music education available for students as part of the core curriculum. All the proceeds from the CD sales will go to The Grammy Foundation. “This is the regular rock show,” said Gimbel, who plays rhythm guitar, keyboards, flute and saxophone. “We do a lot of both styles, but this will be the complete band with all the great drum solos and everything else that goes with a great rock show.” Gimbel says he feels fortunate to be a part of such an iconic band. “I found a band where I genuinely love them music and genuinely love the guys I have been working with for over two decades now,” he said. “I continue to learn and hopefully grow as a musician. We feel blessed that this music has stood up so well over the ages. If anything, we are gaining momentum. Our crowd base is

growing and more generations are getting into this stuff because it is that good.” And by that good, Gimbel means 16 Foreigner songs have been Top 30 hits and the band’s catalog has so more than 75 million albums. Songs like “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Double Vision,” “Hot Blooded,” “Urgent,” “Feels Like The First Time” and “I Don’t Want To Live Without You,” all of which were top five hits for Foreigner of the years. “If I had to guess, it is the quality of the songwriting and the craftsmanship that went into these songs. Mick Jones and Lou Gramm have both been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. From the outside looking in, it seems to me that the songs were written with a very honest direct approach. Mick has this incredible sense of what to put in and what to leave out. “He could have gone for blazing guitar
solos, but that is not his style and that is not what he wanted to do. He wanted great songs. If you listen to any of Foreigner’s hit songs that is what you see. This tremendous quality in the song itself and the lyrics are very direct. It is like a conversation with someone and that makes it easy for the listener to relate to it.” Gimble said the band enjoys working with various choirs on “I Want To Know What Love Is.” “It is really cool,” he said. “Kids these days are not that shy. They are not like shrinking violets up there. They have had a lot of experience and a lot of them jump on the stage and take the stage by storm. It is encouraging to me to see young people that have that kind of energy and swagger. We are always hoping we can add to that confidence and it is something they can use down the road in life.” For information about tickets, go to www.fourwindscasino.com.
