Drinking for a cause Community Pint Night to benefit Paw Paw River
B
ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Ox Creek will be the beneficiary of a Community Pint Night fundraising event occurring at The Livery Microbrewery Thursday, May 5. Although the Paw Paw River has long been considered the environmental jewel of Southwest Michigan, its final tributary, Ox Creek, is often forgotten or ignored. Marcy Hamilton of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission (SWMPC) wants to change this and is heading up a coalition of environmental groups working on a grant project that is focused on water quality in Ox Creek. From 5 to 8 p.m. May 5, a portion of all beer sales at The Livery Microbrewery will go to the Ox Creek project. The Livery Microbrewery is located at 190 Fifth St. in Benton Harbor and sponsors a series of Community Pint Night events on Thursday nights to benefit local groups and projects. More than just beer drinking for a good cause will be happening on May 5, according to Hamilton. A community paddle event will take place earlier that day from 3 to 5 p.m. on the lower Paw Paw River. Paddlers will put in to the Paw Paw River at the launch site located on Graham Avenue in Benton Harbor. Third Coast will have kayaks for rental at a discount for those who don’t have their own boat. Contact Kris Martin at kmartin@swmpc.org or 269-925-1137 x1521 to reserve a single or double kayak. Paddlers will explore the lower reaches of the river led by members of Two Rivers Coalition (TRC), one of the groups working on Ox Creek.
“It should be fun to paddle up the river and past the Edgewater development and golf course and who knows what else we might see,” Hamilton said. “The last time I went paddling with Kevin Haight, president of TRC, we found a series of three beaver dams on Ox Creek within the city limits of Benton Harbor.” Hamilton adds (possibly tongue-in-cheek) that the real goal of the paddle, “is to whet the whistle of the paddlers so they drink more beer at Pint Night.” A new kayak from Third Coast will also be sold at a silent auction at the Pint Night, again to raise money for Ox Creek. Although there are multiple threats to water quality in Ox Creek, Hamilton says this project is looking at the two biggest problems occurring upstream, sediment from agricultural operations and storm water run-off from the hundreds of acres of existing pavement, especially around the Orchards Mall area. One part of the project aims to educate farmers about best management practices that reduce or even eliminate soil running off their fields and then affecting water quality. Another part of the project involves transforming a portion of Wightman & Associates parking lot into a rain garden as a demonstration of how to reduce storm water runoff and provide beneficial habitat simultaneously. In addition to SWMPC and TRC, other local organizations working in partnership on the Ox Creek project include the Berrien Conservation District, Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, Sarett Nature Center and Wightman & Associates.

Founded in 2007, Record Store Day is an annual event and a constant movement to showcase the appreciation of not just vinyl, but of music, the listening experience, and the community that comes from it. particular items on my wishlist this year, instead departing with a plan to take in the experience, dig through the libraries of each store and enjoy that sense of music community. The morning mood was still quiet as I headed down the road for Benton Harbor, so I opted to start with listening to a podcast on my journey. The subject was still music however, as I was listening to Bob Boilen, one of the hosts of NPR’s All Songs Considered, reading a segment of his new book, “Your Song Changed My Life,” describing his childhood encounters with the songs of The Beatles and the path of music that became his life. The book, which has each chapter focusing on a song, an artist and how it affected them, was right at home in the spirit of the holiday. I arrived at 3 Pillars to the lovely sight of limited parking and a sizable crowd already deep into the shelves and racks of music. Jeremy Bonfiglio, one of our local writers and go-to people for regional music, greeted me from behind the counter with “Happy Record Store Day!” Store proprietor, Tom Ives, was conversing with all of his customers, offering up coffee and donuts to the music-hunting crowd. I regularly interrupted my crouching on the ground while digging through record crates to chat with friends old and new. By the time I walked out of the store with my new collection of music, I had caught up with peers from high school and shared stories with strangers. The sun had gotten high and the temperature along with it when I loaded into my car and headed for the next stop. The time for music had come, so I loaded up one of my recent favorites, the album “No Better” by Kalamazoo’s Jake Simmons & The Little Ghosts. By the time I was off the bypass, I had “Toledo”
blasting far too loud, singing along to “ooh whoa oh ohs” without a care for the looks from passing cars. Outside of Rumor Has It in Niles, I encounter a family I had just seen at 3 Pillars. A crowd awaits the store’s opening, standing on the sidewalk browsing boxes of records and CDs while Red Hot Voodoo is warming up to perform inside. The crowd is eager when the doors finally open, filling the store in seconds while the live music takes off on stage. Store owner, Matt Shaver, has only a moment to chat as he rings up my purchases, smiling at the crowd and the music on stage. When I finally arrive home, Kristin is not surprised by the collection I purchased or the fact that I broke my Record Store Day budget. I show her my prizes and recount the stories and fun of the day. As I reflect, I realize that the most exciting aspect of the event is that the experiences I had go beyond the exclusive albums and “one-day-only” specials. Step into any of the stores I have listed on any day of the year and you will likely find an experience similar to those I had today. If you have yet to visit the stores mentioned, you can find information on each online. 3 Pillars has a website at 3pillarsmusic.com, Ignition Garage has one at ignitionmusic.net, and Rumor Has It and Orbit Music can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/RumorStore and facebook.com/Orbit-Music-InMishawaka-214530328567785. St. Joseph Today still seeking dealers for Antiques on the Bluff S T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The premier place to find antiques and collectibles in Southwest Michigan continues to be on the first Sunday of the month, May through October, in St. Joseph. The popular Antiques on the Bluff series returns May 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when vendors will sell their treasures along the tree-lined Lake Bluff Park overlooking Lake Michigan. “We are taking vendor registrations now,” said Whitney Behnke, executive director of St. Joseph Today. “There are booth spaces for dozens of dealers and this is a particularly good year to participate since two of the six Sundays fall on major holiday
weekends when larger crowds flock to town.” Show dates are May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4 and Oct. 2. Behnke said merchandise is limited to antiques and collectibles. Reproductions, modern crafts or new merchandise are not allowed. She asked that interested vendors contact Daniele at 269-985-1111 or daniele@ stjoetoday.com. Dealers may be asked to provide a photograph of representative merchandise before a booth area is assigned. They also will need a Michigan Sales Tax ID to participate. Information about obtaining a tax ID is available at www.michigan.gov/taxes. Antiques on the Bluff is one of several reasons to
visit St. Joseph on Sundays. After viewing the booths, visitors can walk to nearby downtown shops, restaurants, family attractions, beaches and parks along the riverfront. “Starting on June 26, our municipal band also performs free concerts on Sunday afternoons and evenings,” said Behnke. St. Joseph Today is a 501(c)(3) membership-based organization dedicated to developing and promoting events and businesses in St. Joseph, Mich. and its surrounding communities. For more information about Antiques on the Bluff or upcoming events, visit stjoetoday.com, facebook.com/stjoetoday, the Welcome Center at 301 State St., or call 269-985-1111.

A Taste of Michiana Event showcases restaurants, gives back to community By AMBROSIA NELDON ambrosia.neldon @leaderpub.com
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — South Bend Brew Werks is obviously known for its beer, but when the business makes its debut at its first Taste of Michiana event April 27, they’ll be enticing visitors to the booth with an entirely different menu item: brownies. Owner Andrew Elegante said the award-winning brownies were a crowd favorite at the Junior League showcase, earning the Brew Werks t h e P e o p l e ’s C h o i c e Award. “They have a neat back story in that we use the spent grain from our brewing process to make scribing the treats as them, so they represent “chewy, fudgy and deliour sustainability philoso- cious.” phy,” Elegante said, deIn addition to the
brownies, Elegante said Brew Werks will bring Stargazer Citra IPA and Cascading Wheat, the
business’s most popular brews. “We’d love to bring something crazy, but we’re kind of the small guys and we figured we c a n ’t g o w r o n g w i t h bringing our best,” he said. SBBW will be one of more than 40 Michiana restaurants featured at the 26th annual Taste of Michiana from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. For $25, people can sample as much as they can eat and drink from all of the available vendors while listening to live entertainment by Van Dyke Review. Children ages 6 to 16 will be admitted for $10, and children under 5 are free. In addition to showcasing local businesses, funds raised at the event benefit Life Treatment Center, the nonprofit drug
treatment center where Chef Bela Szalay is the executive chef. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about some of the work businesses are doing in their community. “I think our innovative Beer4Good business model through which we donated over $20,000 last year to our three community partners is something else people will want to learn about,” Elegante said. “ I can’t think of anyone I’ve talked to about it who hasn’t gotten excited and wanted to come visit us.”
In addition to South Bend Brew Werks, Taste of Michiana welcomes Whole Foods Market, Oh Mama’s on the Avenue, Martin’s Kids Cooking School and Rise ‘N’ Roll Bakery for the first time. “Chef Bela has made it really easy for restaurants and breweries to participate in,” Elegante said. “Brew Werks prides itself on being the brewery in the area that is most actively involved in the community so with the event’s focus on highlighting the region and giving back, it was an easy yes.”
