Antiques on the Bluff St. Joseph Today seeking dealers for monthly event
S
T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The premier place to find antiques and collectibles in Southwest Michigan continues to be on the first Sunday of the month, May through October, in St. Joseph. The popular Antiques on the Bluff returns May 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when vendors will sell their treasures in the tree-lined Lake Bluff Park overlooking Lake Michigan. “We are taking vendor registrations now,” said Jill Stone, executive director of St. Joseph Today. “There are booth spaces for dozens of dealers and this is an especially good year to participate since two of the six Sundays fall on major
holiday weekends when we draw larger crowds to town.” Show dates are May 3, June 7, July 5, Aug. 2, Sept. 6 and Oct. 4. Stone said merchandise is limited to antiques and collectibles. Reproductions, modern crafts or new merchandise are not allowed. She asked that interested vendors contact Daniele at (269) 985-1111 or daniele@stjoetoday.com. Dealers may be asked to provide a photograph of representative merchandise before a booth area is assigned. They also will need a Michigan Sales Tax ID to participate. Information about obtaining a tax ID is available at www.michigan.gov/taxes.
Stone said Antiques on the Bluff is one of several reasons to visit St. Joseph on Sundays. After viewing the booths, visitors can walk to nearby downtown shops, restaurants, family attractions, beaches and parks along the riverfront. “Starting on June 28, our municipal band also performs free concerts on Sunday afternoons and evenings,” she said. St. Joseph Today is a 501(c)(3) membership-based organization dedicated to developing and promoting events and businesses in St. Joseph, Mich. and its surrounding communities. For more information about Antiques on the Bluff or upcoming events, visit stjoetoday.com, facebook.com/ stjoetoday, the Welcome Center at 301 State St., or call (269) 9851111.

Andy Kolosowsky is one of several performers scheduled to perform at ArtsBridge's spring concert. Dawn’s eclectic professions include actress on Italian television and cinema. Dawn has also performed as singer actress in an Italian musical, which toured all the major theaters in the cities of Milan, Rome, Florence, and Genova. She is also a runway model for Italian designers and a television show presenter. In Europe, Dawn performs with her band at prestigious events all over the continent. Dawn now divides her time between Milan and Benton Harbor, where she returns to participate in the rejuvenation of her hometown. Dawn is also creator, executive producer, and host of Harbor Lights TV. Harbor Lights TV (HLTV), a television series which features positive stories on the topics of education, economic and community development, agriculture, natural resources, healthcare, arts and culture, diversity and community relations throughout southwestern Michigan. Andy Kolosowsky Andy Kolosowsky started playing the saxophone when he was 13 years old and quickly fell in love with the instrument. When he turned 14, he started private lessons and continued through high school. He studied music performance at Grand Valley State University and he played in a number of big bands and small jazz combos in the Grand Rapids
area. After college, he decided to move to Chicago where he played with as many jazz groups as he could, including his own group, The Kolo Quartet and the occasional rock and roll job. Andy played in the Chicago area for six years before getting hired by The Mel Hayes Group, a variety band that toured all over the United States. Andy currently lives in Benton Harbor where he performs regularly with The Ark Jazz Project and other groups. Andy also owns and operates ARK Upholstery, a furniture upholstery business. Bill Yamakoski Bill Yamakoski started playing the piano at age six. His aptitude for the instrument was quickly recognized by his parents and he subsequently studied with a private instructor for many years. As a teenager, Bill discovered jazz music, fell in love with the style, and has never stopped playing it. His expertise as a jazz pianist comes from years of practice, a keen ear, and a deep understanding of the structure of music. As an adult, Bill has made a successful career in veterinary medicine and as an airline pilot, but through it all he has never stopped playing the piano. He has performed with many local bands such as The Ed Bagatini Quartet, Friends Jazz Trio, and more. While Bill is a traditionalist at heart, his ability to play contempo-
Tim King Tim King studied music at Lake Michigan College and the University of Michigan, and was tutored by his father and grandfather, both professional musicians. Not only is Tim noted for being an incredible bass player, he doubles on clarinet and saxophone, and has performed with many local groups including The Ed Bagatini Trio, The Ed Bagatini New Swing Orchestra, Lake Effect Big Band, Mister Edd, and other groups. Tim is also the owner and operator of LTD Music Productions of Berrien Springs offering services for live bands, sound reinforcement services, audio recording, CD and cassette duplication, and background music productions. Tim has worked with many top-notch local musicians and has been a guest soloist on many recordings. His versatility and his in depth knowledge of music makes him a highly sought after musician. Jim Allen Jim Allen enjoyed music at an early age and it has always been a large part of his life. He played trombone in the school band and guitar in garage bands. When he discovered drums and percussion, he made it his passion. His first opportunity to perform on drums was with The Cadillac High School Entertainers, a high school show band. This led to his inclusion in more high school combos playing at weddings and festivals. After high school, Jim was a member of the All Knoll Trio from Lansing. Although Jim returned to school and became a successful endodontist, Jim continues to play the drums and has experience performing all kinds of music. In fact, Jim has studied drums with instructor Keith Hall from Western Michigan University and Nelson Oliva from New York City. He has also attended several jazz and drum music summer camps to continue honing his craft. Although he is experienced in many styles, jazz remains his favorite.

Exploring the past Museum to host discussion on Native American quilting
D
O WA G I A C , Mich. — The Dowagiac Area History Museum and Pokagon Band of Potawatomi welcome Dr. Marsha MacDowell and Dr. Kurt Dewhurst from Michigan State University as they present To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2. This program is part of the community-wide One Story Read series of programs that highlight themes addressed in this year’s book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.” Marsha MacDowell, Ph.D. is Professor, Department of Art, Art History, and Design, at Michigan State University Museum and Curator at the Michigan State University Museum. She is author of many publications and curator of exhibitions and festival programs focused on traditional arts of Michigan, Native Americans, African Americans, and South Africans. She has done extensive research on the history and meaning of quilt-making and directs the Quilt Index (www. quiltindex.org), the international repository of stories and images of over 60,000 quilts and their makers. Her work has been written about in Native Peoples, Indian Country Today, and, in 2014, she was a featured guest on the call-in program Native America Calling where she fielded comments from Native Americans across the continent who make or use quilts. According to MacDowell, “Of the various American Indian art forms that resulted from contact with other cultures, perhaps the least well known is quilt-making. However, throughout the entire post-contact period, Native quilters have used colors and designs distinctly their own to make quilts which function in ways both similar to other cultural groups as well as in ways that have specific tribal or pan-Indian meanings.”

In the 1980s, researchers at the Michigan State University Museum began investigating of the history of quilt-making in Michigan and have subsequently documented more than 10,000 quilts in the state. This effort led to targeted research on Odawa, Potowatomi, and Ojibway quilt-making. The researchers then collaborated with the National Museum of the American India to do on
a nationwide survey of the art among many indigenous peoples. This research resulted in the nationally-touring exhibition To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions, an accompanying publication, and the development of a world-class collection at Michigan State University Museum of over 70 quilts made by Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska
Native artists. To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions is offered free to the public through the museum and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Education Department. The museum is located at the corner of Division and West Railroad streets. For more information, call the Dowagiac Area History Museum at 269783-2560 or visit www. dowagiacmuseum.info.

Spice up your asparagus
A
sparagus season is here! Everyone around Michiana and the great lakes gets excited when the aspara-
gus starts to show up in spring. Already in my news feed yesterday were several appetizing asparagus photos. You really don’t have to do a lot to make a great dish out of this local delight, but we can still get sick of it by the end of t h e season. Last night, I decided to mix it up and pair the old favorite with one of my recent obsessions, fennel. I’ve been using fennel mostly in salads, but I was excited to use the bulb and the greens to season the dish. I just went really simple and tossed everything together in a Le Cruset roasting dish and 15 minutes later I had a palate pleasing pairing I’d never experienced before. The fennel really makes the asparagus pop and a

Yield: 4 small side servings 1 bunch local asparagus 1 fennel bulb and the herbs from 1 stalk ½ a yellow onion, sliced ¾ tablespoon minced garlic 1 serrano pepper, minced ½ tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ¾ teaspoon sea salt Cut off the very end of the asparagus stalks, then cut them in half. Slice the fennel bulb, then half the pieces. Using kitchen shears, trim off the fennel herb from one stalk. Save the remaining stalks for another recipe. Toss all ingredients well and place in either a roasting dish or on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place on top rack of pre-heated oven and roast at 375 for about 12-15 minutes. Be sure to stir once throughout the cooking process. Serve as a side dish with smoked tofu, BBQ seitan, or tempeh grounds and a potato or grain.
Kat Barry Kat's Hot Talk little onion and garlic round it out perfectly. I served it with smoked tofu for an impressive and satisfying dinner in minutes. I think this would be a perfect side dish at a dinner party and a great opportunity to show off some culinary creativity. I tossed in 1 serrano pepper for a little kick and also because I needed to use the pepper before it went bad. I really loved the
punch it added, but you could certainly leave it out or substitute with a teaspoon or two of crushed red pepper flakes, or even a milder hot pepper like jalapeno. Remember when using fresh hot peppers that seeding cuts the spice. Kat Barry, a St. Joseph, Michigan native, is owner Math Help

LaSalle Grill wins Diamond Award 19th straight year
S
OUTH BEND, Ind. — LaSalle Grill, a staple of downtown South Bend dining, has been named a recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award for the 19th consecutive year, an accomplishment unmatched by any restaurant in Indiana. There were only four Indiana restaurants named to the 2015 list: LaSalle Grill, The Carriage House, also in South Bend, Restaurant Tallent in Bloomington and Joseph Decuis in Roanoke. To help put this accomplishment in perspective, only one current Four Diamond restaurant in Chicago has received the award for more years than LaSalle Grill while only three current Four Diamond restaurants in New York City have received the award as often as LaSalle Grill. Chicago’s Spiaggia holds 21 consecutive awards. In New York La Grenouille has received a Four Diamond rating annually since 1989 and One if by Land, Two if by Sea for 19 consecutive years. There are three restaurants in New York City who have received the award for 18 consecutive years: Gotham Bar and Grill, Gramercy Tavern and Nobu. “Our focus is to provide the best possible service, atmosphere and ingredients to our guests. We believe in the farm to table concept, and we attribute our success to our use of local, sustainable foods and practices,” said Mark McDonnell, founder and proprietor. “We are honored to receive this award for another consecutive year. It’s thrilling to be recognized along with such culinary powerhouses like Spiaggia and La Grenouille. It’s wonderful to win, but to keep win-
ning means we are really onto something special here.” Named for French explorer Robert de LaSalle, LaSalle Grill opened its doors on April 8, 1991. Over the years it has continued to provide delicious cuisine, a great atmosphere and awardwinning wine list. LaSalle Grill opens at 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Continuing its 79-year tradition, AAA rates more properties than any other rating entity. It is the only rating system that covers the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean and the only rating system that conducts professional, onsite evaluations using published guidelines weighted by member priorities.

UCHANAN, Mich. — A public reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Buchanan Art Center, for the following new exhibits by local artists: Sacred Faces; Photography by Wolfgang Schmidt, and Creative Spirit; Photography by Ellen Schmidt in the Roti Roti Gallery. Student work from this year’s Creative High School Art Exhibit will be shown in the BAC Showplace Gallery, Hess Gallery, and BAC Showcases. All exhibits opened Wednesday, April 22. The Schmidts’ show runs through Saturday, May 30. The Creative High School Art Exhibit runs through Thursday, May 21, 2015. Wolfgang Schmidt Photographer Wolfgang Schmidt started his photography career when he was 12 years old and received his first brownie-type camera for his birthday. He fell in love with his new hobby and took many pictures of his family life and their trips. When he graduated from high school, Schmidt wanted to become a professional photographer; however, his father cautioned him and suggested to learn a career where he could support his family. Working several years in a camera store, he had many opportunities to further his knowledge in photography, before studying international business at Cologne University in Germany. When he moved to the United States in 1962, Schmidt received many opportunities to travel for business.
It is Schmidt’s belief that that people are often marginalized and people back home could not appreciate their life. It has been Schmidt’s experience that a face can tell you a great deal about the wisdom and life of a person. As a result, he concentrated on documenting Sacred Faces and shares his respect and love for them through his photos. Schmidt’s work has been exhibited in many solo shows and group exhibits.
Normally taking his camera with him, and when he had free time, he would explore the area instead of spending time with his peers. To enhance his photographic knowledge, Schmidt attended various workshops by well-renowned photographers. He was encouraged to identify a field of photography that would reflect his personality. Eventually, Schmidt became
responsible for 13 computer installations around the world, and this gave him the opportunity to travel internationally. During this time, Schmidt attended various spiritual workshops and became active in his local church. Upon retirement, he traveled extensively to Latin America, Africa and Asia with an emphasis on visiting indigenous people.
Ellen Schmidt Photographer Ellen Schmidt’s philosophy is based on living the creative process, not focusing on the product. Schmidt believes in poet, Mary Oliver’s words, “Work is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished.” Her trademark macro-photography, film only, and double exposures work has been exhibited in South Bend, Indiana, and Cape Cod, and she is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association. Schmidt has a permanent photograph in the YWCA in South Bend, and the University of Notre Dame utilizes Schmidt’s “Morning Glory Muse” image on one of their Theology curriculum brochures. Ellen Schmidt received her BS in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1961. Additional education instruction has been received from Retreats International, Notre Dame, IN, Workshops for Creativity at Holy Names College, Berkeley CA, and Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York.
Creative High School Art Exhibit The BAC Creative High School Art Exhibit is an annual art show for area high school students. Open to high schools in the tri-county area, this art exhibit features 2-D and 3-D works, including painting, drawing, sculpture and pottery. A showcase of local talent, this exhibit features cash awards made possible through a generous donation of Dr. Richard Beckermeyer and Michigan-Indiana AEP. In addition, past awards have included a BAC Scholarship, and merit award given on behalf of the Buchanan Fine Arts Council. Area high schools expected to participate this year include: Buchanan, Niles, Brandywine, Eau Claire and Michigan Lutheran. Works will be on exhibit in the BAC Showplace gallery, Hess Library Gallery, and BAC Showcases through Thursday, May 21, 2015.
The Buchanan Art Center is located at 117 West Front Street in Buchanan, Michigan.
