Dablon invites wine lovers to tour vineyard

B

ARODA, Mich. — As one of southwest Michigan’s newest wineries, leaders at Dablon Vineyards say they are very excited to offer vineyard and barrel room tours to guests throughout the summer and early fall. Every Friday and Saturday, beginning May 6 and until autumn harvest, Dablon’s winemakers Chad Hartline and Rudy Shafer will be taking guests on tours of the hillside production facility, underground barrel room and the vineyard. Tours offer guests a chance to learn about Dablon’s trellising style and the unique terroir that makes the Baroda vineyard so suitable for growing grapes. Dablon’s tours are led by its winemakers, so guests have the opportunity to ask as many questions about the winemaking process as time allows. “After farming for over 20 years, seeing the buds starting to sprout up in the spring still brings a feeling of joy and gratefulness in every year,” said Rudy Shafer, winemaker. “We are looking forward to sharing this joyful experience with our winery customers.” Following the tour, guests will head back to the tasting room to sample six Dablon wines of their choice. With more than 30 acres of vines, Dablon offers many unique European varietals including CarDablon Vineyards — Winery & Tasting room is lomenere, Tannat, Petit Verdot & Syrah. cated at 111 W. Shawnee Road, Baroda. Friday tours cost $15. Saturday tours cost $18. No vineyard damage yet

M

ark Twain once quipped, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Apparently the same can be said about any spring frost damage to the Indiana grape crop. One of the Indianapolis station reported earlier this month possible damage in Indiana Vineyards. Considering much of the Hoosier state had several below-average temperature weeks in midMarch and very early April, the possibility seemed real. Hoosier vineyard owners have suffered late frost damage in recent seasons. The cost and the impact of losing fruit is significant. But it turns out that TV station had not done a lot of reporting. “I don’t know where they got the information,” said Purdue agricultural extension specialist Bruce Bordelon. The grape and fruit expert is the authoritative source on Indiana vineyards. “Purdue did a press release a week or so ago about a newsletter I wrote. I suppose it’s still floating around. Or maybe they talked to local growers. We were very early in March (with bud break) and that had all fruit growers concerned.” But the cool weather in mid-April proved to be a good thing, Bordelon explained. “The cooler temperatures slowed development, especially in grapes. Peaches are well ahead of normal and apples are all over the place from early to late. It’s a weird year. I suspect

COLUMNIST

Howard Hewitt Grape Sense if there was any damage it is in the southern onethird of the state. Some areas there got into the mid-20s and they were further ahead so some damage is likely. But with many crops, some damage to buds or flowers does not mean reduced yields.” Now, and I’m sure Dr. Bordelon would agree, it’s not to say that some vineyards might not have had spot damage. Oliver Winery’s Creekbend vineyard lost about 30 percent of its vines just a couple of years ago. Bernie Parker, vineyard manager, for Bill Oliver’s operation confirmed it got cold but believes his vines survived. “We had temps down to 23 degrees on the morning of April 5,” Parker said. “Only one variety was at full bud swell (showing some green/pink but no leaves unfolding.) The few that were extended the farthest got a little burn on the outside, but I didn’t find any that were dead. The cooler temperatures the last two weeks of March and beginning of

Bernie Parker, vineyard manager at Oliver Winery. April helped to slowdown bud break enough to get through the freezes.” Oliver is one of the two biggest vineyards in the state. It’s also one of very few vineyards with equipment designed to fight frost. “We have had seven nights this month alone that temperatures got down to below 30 degrees. We won’t know for sure (about any damage) until the vines start budding out completely. It’s a waiting game, and hope the worst is behind us.” The cautious approach is always best but it appears Indiana wine grapes didn’t suffer the damage of two years ago. Maybe another Mark Twain quote is appropriate, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.” Howard Hewitt,

Crawfordsville, Indiana, writes about wine every other week for more than 20 Midwestern newspapers. Reach him at: Submitted photo hewitthoward@gmail. Bruce Bordelon, Purdue University agricultural com extension specialist.

Gala, art exhibit part of the Dogwood pre-festival events

D

By TED YOAKUM ted.yoakum @leaderpub.com

OWAGIAC, Mich. — Those who simply can’t wait to until May 5 to begin celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival will be pleased to know there’s not one, but two events taking place before the official festival kickoff. The first of these events will be Dogwood’s 25th Anniversary Gala, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, at the Mathews Conference Center on the Dowagiac campus of Southwestern Michigan College. Tickets for the event cost $25 — all attendees must be at least 21 years old. Similar to last year’s “wine and song” event held to kickoff the 24th festival, the gala will be a marriage of good drink, good food and live entertainment held out at the community college to commemorate the silver anniversary of the event, said festival Secretary Bobbie Jo Hartline. “We wanted to kick off this year with a party that celebrated the people made the festival what it is: our volunteers and patrons,” Hartline said. “It gives them a fun way to come together and share

some stories.” In addition to sweet and savory hors d’oeuvres, attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of wines from Michigan wineries, Hartline said. Entertainment will be provided during the gala as well, including live music and active art displays. Some visitors may even get a chance to have their portrait drawn by one of the artists in residence that evening, Hartline said. The biggest attraction of Friday’s event will be the old photographs and posters that organizers will be pulling out of the festival archives, Hartline said. The pieces will depict moments from throughout Dogwood’s 25-year history that are sure to elicit memories from many in the audience that evening, the secretary said. “The walls will be covered with Dogwood memorabilia — some people will recognize and some they won’t,” she said. A silent auction will also take place during the event. Visitors will also have a chance to purchase tickets for other Dogwood events during the gala as well. The second pre-festival event is scheduled to take place the following week, at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 2, at the Dogwood Festival Gallery inside downtown Huntington Bank Building. The

festival will be unveiling its newest art exhibit during the event, displaying impressionist pieces painted by area artist Bob Gottlieb. Gottlieb, a former executive with Dowagiac’s Wolverine Insurance, has taken his lifelong passion for art to the next level since retirement, creating works of the art that have been on display in galleries like St. Joseph’s Box Factory. The idea of hosting a display of the artist’s works during Dogwood festival came from Karen Judd, the chair of the visual arts event, Hartline said. “[Gottlieb] someone you wouldn’t think would be your typical artist, but he does some really great work and is very humble about it to boot,” Hartline said. “She [Judd] thought it would be a good twist compared to our usual galleries.” The gallery opening will be free and open to the public. Refreshments will be offered as well. Gottlieb’s artwork will be on display at the Dogwood gallery through the festival, which takes place May 5-15, Hartline said. For information or tickets for any of the upcoming festival events, people can contact the festival office at (866) 4902847.
