Elkhart festival to draw 15,000
By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @offthewater.com
For jazz lovers, there is nothing bigger in Michiana than the Elkhart Jazz Festival. For 25 years, the Elkhart Jazz Festival has been bringing in some of the best musicians from across the country to northern Indiana. The festival runs June 21-24 at six downtown stages, including two venues in the award-winning Lerner Theatre — the cornerstone of Elkhart’s budding Arts & Entertainment District. “We are anticipating about 15,000 over the weekend this year,” said Gina Leichty, promotions coordinator. “For people that live in the area, it is a great time to go to the plaza, hang out, meet some cool friends and listen to great music.” This year’s festival features more than 20 musical acts, including Alejo Poveda’s Latin Quintet, Davina and the Vagabonds, The Four Freshmen and Tim Cunningham. “A lot of great veterans
are returning along with some new folks I think will appeal to a younger audience,” Leichty said. The Jazz Festival should be a good place to meet new people. Leichty said, on average, about 70 percent of ticket sales come from outside the Michiana area. “People come from all over to attend this event,” she said. The opening ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. June 22. Performances will run until after 11 p.m. at the six downtown locations. Performances pick up again at 9:30 a.m. June 23 and run until after 11:30 p.m. Performances June 24 run from 9:30 a.m. to around 4 p.m. Regular ticket prices for day sessions start at $35. For $130 and up, patrons can gain access to all venues throughout the weekend. Several free events will take place throughout the weekend. Visit the festival website at elkhartjazzfestival. com or call (800) 2948223 for information.

Editor's top picks of where to go, what to do
The Yorktown visits Saugatuck Sunday
13th Annual Juneteenth Celebration 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday LaSalle Park, South Bend, Ind. The South Bend Chapter Indiana Black Expo Inc. presents 3-on-3 basketball, Church’n in the Park, the All American City Forum, a health fair, hip hop, gospel, blues and R&B entertainment, prizes, amusement rides and soul food. Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S., was first held June 19, 1865, when the final slaves were made aware of their freedom. Visit indianablackexpo.com/chapter-south-bend.asp.
The first U.S. flag cruise ship in 83 years will visit Saugatuck Sunday, just days following the official departure of the 105-year-old SS Keewatin, which was towed from its 45-year location in dry dock to return to Canada. The Yorktown, owned by Travel Dynamics of New York, will stop in Saugatuck during its inaugural visit to the Great Lakes, and Saugatuck will be its first port of call in Michigan. The ship is to arrive at 7 a.m. and will dock at Wicks Park on Water Street in downtown Saugatuck. “This visit is significant because it will be the first U.S. Flag Ship in our harbor since Goodrich Steamship lines left here on Labor Day in 1929," said Felicia Fairchild, the executive director of the SaugatuckDouglas Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Since 9/11, US Homeland Security regulations have made it very difficult and costly for foreign cruise ships to tour the Great Lakes," Fairchild said. The Yorktown which has an 8-foot draft, has been put into service in the Great Lakes to accommodate a growing number of experienced cruise passengers who are seeking new and unusual destinations that also provide some historic and educational experiences. They are interested in visiting smaller ports where larger cruise ships can’t go. The Yorktown will return to Saugatuck on June 29, July 1, July 13, July 15, Aug. 17 and Aug. 19. A boat parade will escort The Yorktown as it enters the harbor, where a welcome ceremony will take place at 7 a.m. Prior to The Yorktown's departure at 6 p.m., the Casco band will perform in the gazebo beginning at 4:30 p.m. “The Visitors Bureau is looking forward to many families treating their fathers to an excursion to Saugatuck on Father’s Day to watch this beautiful ship arrive and depart from our port," Fairchild said. “We are also going to try and set up a live stream broadcast on our website at www.saugatuck.com for those who can’t attend in person.” Call (269) 857-1701.

Oddities crop up at appraisal events At my antiques appraisal shows across the country, I review art, antiques, collectibles, and, on occasion, I appraise some oddities. That’s right, some of the stuff people bring me to evaluate is downright odd. For instance, there was the guy who argued with me over his $8 old glass canning jar during a show in St. Petersburg, Fla. He thought he had the first glass jar ever made by the Ball company because it had a date on it — 1858. He didn’t. Many such jars have that date on them. He had an old glass jar worth about $8 that shows up at nearly every yard sale and thrift store on the planet. He didn’t like my appraisal, but he wasn’t the first person whose heart I had to break with the truth about an antique. At an event in Bucks
COLUMNIST
Dr. Lori Arts & Antiques County, Penn., I was asked to appraise a pair of shoes that were worn to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. According to the family folklore, the owner’s mother paid a pretty penny for the shoes, which matched a pea-green gown she wore to the coronation. I tried to explain the shoes would have been worth more if they were worn by the queen on that historic
day, but that explanation about provenance didn’t go over well. Appraised value was $550, including the original shoebox. Now that Queen Elizabeth has reached her 60th year on the throne, those shoes decorated with applied ornament that looked like Wedgwood jasperware ceramic are attracting more interest with British collectors. In Louisville, Ken., I appraised the blueprints to the Jefferson Memorial built on the National Mall. The plans were brought in for appraisal by the grandson of the construction foreman for the famous site. I told the owner to protect them in an acid free storage box or frame them up to museum standards. They were worth $1,500. In Seattle, Wash., I appraised a Jim Beam bot-
tle made especially for the 1962 World’s Fair held in that city. It featured an embossed image of the fair and the highly recognizable Space Needle. With these bottles, it’s good to have the unbroken seal and the original whiskey inside. All said and done, the bottle was worth $65. In Columbus, Ohio, I appraised a (quite appropriately) Pre-Columbian polychromed Moche vessel, circa 100-800 AD, for $15,000. No questions asked — a rare piece of Pre-Columbian art is worth big bucks. Another Columbus fan brought a rare 1880s Swiss music box to my appraisal event. The reason this piece was rare was because it had a wind-up automaton bird in a cage with real feathers which moved and sang beautifully. The owner

For the public, I conduct more than 100 antiques appraisal events where I teach people what to look for when antiquing, just how much old stuff is really worth and how to negotiate when buying and selling. While the objects that I evaluate at my antiques appraisal events are fascinating, I am most intrigued retained the original key by the people and their stoand, once we wound that bird up, we couldn’t get it ries. Dorris Akers to exhibit at Water Street Glassworks Water Street Glassworks announces the exhibit, "The Glass Garden and Other Whimsies," by artist Dorris Akers. The exhibit of found-object art opens 6 to 8 p.m. June 22. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be in attendance to discuss her works. This is a free event and open to the public. Akers, who claims she’s been intrigued by found objects since the 1960s, uses manmade objects of glass, metal, plastic, wood, leather, cloth and other materials as her medium. Her most recent work features glass as the primary material; some pieces suggest realism and others are purely abstract. “My fascination began after seeing an exhibition at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where single objects were presented as art exactly as found with the evidence of age, treatment and wear having changed them through time,” states Akers. “I was hooked and began to see the visual world in an entirely different way—especially as it relates to art and aesthetics. Everything became a potential design element,” she said. The Glassworks exhibit continues through Aug. 4 at 140 Water St. in Benton Harbor. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Leap of faith
Owners offer sweet indulgence in ice cream shop By KATIE ROHMAN
katie.rohman@leaderpub.com
GRANGER, Ind. — Nine-year-old Patrick Mclaughlin’s face was covered in chocolate as he sat in the shade and scooped frozen yogurt — chocolate with chocolate syrup, Reeses Pieces, sprinkles and chocolate chips, to be exact — into his mouth. “Pretty good,” he said. He and his sister, 6-yearold Catherine, were visiting the self-serve frozen yogurt shop Urban Swirl for the first time. Catherine, who chose watermelon yogurt with sprinkles and chocolate syrup, said she “loves” the different flavors. “I think their favorite part is doing it themselves,” their mother, Martha Mclaughlin, said. ‘A little leap of faith’ Urban Swirl, which opened in June 2011 at 7130 Heritage Square Suite 440 in the Heritage Square shopping center in Granger, Ind., has grown wildly popular among all ages of people seeking a sweet indulgence. The kicker is that Urban Swirl’s 14 flavors are so decadent that even before toppings are heaped on, one doesn’t notice it’s actually kind of healthy. Nondairy and no sugar-added options are also “on tap” as well. “It’s deceiving,” coowner Chrissy Harper said. “It’s actually really healthy for you.” “Even our sorbets have live and active cultures,” co-owner Nancy Hildebrandt, of Granger,
said. Chrissy and her husband, Ben, Hildebrandt and a fourth silent partner are first-time business owners. Harper, a California native and Osceola, Ind., resident, saw similar selfserve frozen yogurt models in the St. Louis area. “My husband always wanted to open something, but he didn’t know what,” she said. Hildebrandt became involved because Ben coached her daughter in wrestling at Penn High School in Mishawaka. “I didn’t know if it would work here,” Harper said of the business concept. The Indiana weather and the economy were her main concerns.
“We were confident in our product, but we were unsure of the marketplace,” Harper said. “It still was a little leap of faith,” Hildebrandt said. Urban Swirl was busy the first summer and steady throughout its first winter, something the owners attribute to relentless social media marketing via email, Facebook and Twitter and their involvement in the community. “All four of us are ingrained in the community,” Harper said. “I do think the success is not just the quality of the product, but the social aspect,” Hildebrandt said. “You have to spend time doing that — it doesn’t just come,” Harper said. ‘We knew we had to compete’ Urban Swirl does not look like a mom-and-pop joint — the uninformed might believe it is part of a chain of shops. “If a national chain came to the area, we knew we had to compete,”

For example, they recently tried watermelon, and it was a hit. “It’s a great summer flavor,” Harper said. “A lot of it’s kind of trial and error.” Cake batter is the most popular among customers, with Very Berry Sorbet, chocolate, vanilla and cookies and cream close behind. This copper and iron hand-fashioned gazebo covers the walk leading to an old greenhouse from the parking lot. “It is a fabulous piece, all hand-cut and hand-hammered by a master metal smith in Cassopolis by the name of Harold Nelson,” says Ruth Semones, the Root Seller.
Enhance garden with help from the Root Seller What I hadn’t counted on when I visited the Root Seller is I would encounter a walking plant encyclopedia known as Ruth Semones. I love fresh herbs in pasta and vegetable dishes. Fresh rosemary and thyme in a roast is heavenly. Visiting the Baroda market at 1251 Hinchman Rd. is like a guided tour through a plant museum. I thought I would find out a few hints, maybe some nontraditional uses and that would be great. “A lot of people who come here are a little overwhelmed at first by all we have here,” said Semones, who took the name of the Root Seller in her 20s, and she has claimed it ever since with a laugh. Semones will have moved to this property two years ago in August, and she says this will be her

Kathie Hempel LOCAL FOOD forever location. She has great respect for Sam Somora, who founded Sunshine Perennials on the property. “Sam had indentured himself to the grocer in Baroda the last two years of high school to get the money to build that greenhouse,” she said. During her high school days in Jefferson, Ind., she
had the good fortune of a teacher, James Ward, who recognized her enthusiasm for horticulture and fed her all the knowledge she could hold. As a child, she remembers loving to work with her mother in the yard. “I think many people think of herbs as these cute little plants that grow close to the ground — that’s not necessarily so. Some of the best medicines, herbs traditional use, come from trees. People need to experiment.” Certainly, pick the basils, thymes, sages, rosemary, mints and balms. However, an injustice will be done if you don’t spend some time and learn more about when to and how to plant your purchases. For instance, instead of just having a specific herb garden, Semones says what you want to do is to incorporate herbs throughout your garden. She introduced me to calamintha, a plant with a very strong minty fragrance. She says it has manners. Like most mints, she is sure it would make a wonderful tea with medicinal properties, but loves that it blooms all summer long until frost and informs me the bees love it. I’m sold.
Dowagiac Concert Series A charming community and hamlet of inland lakes, Dowagiac and its neighboring Sister Lakes are a favorite summertime destination families have enjoyed for generations. You’re sure to feel at home among the prevailing charm of turn-of-the-century storefronts, stately homes and tree-lined boulevards. Yet it’s the magnificent display of public sculpture along with open-air concerts that are sure to rekindle your spirit. Dowagiac is home to one of Michigan’s premier fine arts events. There are also two museums to explore, live theatre at its best, a festival for every season and summertime concerts. Now in its 17th season, the Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series has made the picturesque downtown Dowagiac a popular gathering spot on Thursday evenings for families and friends, and music enthusiasts of all genres. “Staged within Dowagiac’s central business district of specialty shops and restaurants, we invite you to join us for a wonderful summer of outdoor entertainment,” said organizer Vickie Phillipson. As program director for the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority and Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce, Phillipson has organized the summertime series for more than a decade. Reminiscent of the musical fare presented during the late-1800s by Round Oak Band, families gather at Beckwith Park on Thursday evenings for the 12-week concert series that opens at 7:30 p.m. Music enthusiasts enjoy vocal and instrumental performances from the big band sound of the 40s to rhythm and blues, jazz, bluegrass and Tex-Mex Americana. Hosted by the Downtown Development Authority, the 2012 fine arts event was funded for the fifth consecutive year by Huntington Bank. Located at Front and Beeson streets, Beckwith Park with its open-air gazebo provides room for lawn-chair seating and a lush, grassy knoll that’s perfect for blankets. “Music enthusiasts can enjoy dinner at one of our fine or casual restaurants, or they’re welcome to pack a picnic basket for the park,” Phillipson said. “Then, sit back and relax, or let the moment whisk you onto the dance floor. You’re sure to find Thursday nights have never been so enjoyable.”

'Alien' prequel has landed Prometheus has
landed, and the outcome is breathtaking. The highly anticipated Ridley Scott science fiction blockbuster is an amazing prequel to Scotts “Alien” series.
It’s difficult to describe what this movie is about without spoiling it. A group of scientists goes on a mission aboard the spacecraft Prometheus to a distant planet in 2093 to collect information about the origins of humankind. It is a crazy adventure with tense scenes that will occasionally gross you out. The main element of the film, like the script and the acting, makes it a solid movie, but the visuals are what make it unfor-

Brayden Swathwood Star Struck "Prometheus" HHHHH out of 5 stars Rating: R Genre: Sci-fi, action
gettable. From the incredible opening scene to some of the more horrifying, “I wish I never saw that” images, Prometheus is worth checking out for anyone who loves sci-fi. This movie is related to
the Alien series, but even if you have never seen it, the movie’s plot is simple to follow. Even if you are not interested in the story, the acting is so amazing it’s worth checking out. The most interesting character is played by Michael Fassbender. He plays a robot, David, who will never die and will never grow old. David tags along with the rest of the crew intending to help on searches. Meanwhile, Noomi Rapace blew it out of the park with her performance. She was perfect playing Dr. Shaw. Her emotions were great, her accent was great, her overall performance was breathtaking. From the opening scene, your eyes are glued to this epic masterpiece: acting, visuals and even the scenes that will gross you out and give you nightmares. So far, Prometheus is one of the greatest movies of 2012.
Waterfront Film Festival ranked in top three by Screen Actors Guild For more than a decade the Waterfront Film Festival, held in June each year, has attracted people from all over the world to Saugatuck. Screen Actors Guild Magazine, the national publication distributed to every professional actor and thousands of production companies, ranked Waterfront Film Festival third most popular following Sundance and Cannes Film Festival.
The event was recently named "Best Summer Festival" by Lake Magazine and is listed by FilmThreat.com as one of the top 10 “Fantastic Film Festival Vacations.” The Detroit Free Press calls the festival “One of the most refreshingly laidback film events in the country,” while the Chicago Tribune describes it “Like a laid-back Sundance ... Great Indie films!” Hollywood talent
agent Sean Elliott agrees: “I had an absolutely funfilled weekend. The passion behind the festival is amazing.” The lineup for the 14th annual Waterfront Film Festival, which continues through Sunday, is available at www.waterfrontfilm.org and includes 25 Midwest premieres and 22 Michigan premieres as well as selections from the SXSW, Slamdance and Sundance film festivals.
