Michigan City gets jazzy

Inaugural Festival to take over Washington Park

M

ICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Live Music Matters will present the inaugural Lighthouse Jazz Festival on July 9 in Michigan City’s lakefront Guy Foreman Amphitheatre, located inside historic Washington Park. The one-day festival features live music by top jazz artists, craft beers and wine, local cuisine, interactive activities for children and more. The festival will feature a Tribute to Miles Davis by his former musical director Robert Irving III and trumpeter Corey Wilkes. The Lighthouse Jazz Festival kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Tickets for this unique entertainment experience are now on sale at http://j.mp/lighthousejazz. “Michigan City is on the upswing of change and everyone, including me, wants to be a part of something big,” said Lighthouse Jazz Festival Artistic Director John Moultrie. His regionally based firm is producing the music festival. “Michigan City reminds me of many of the neighborhoods in Chicago where I grew up. The culture and diversity makes me feel right at home. Not to mention the people that I’ve come to meet — from small business owners, to corporate retailers, from the locals to visitors. … We all want to do our part and support the new vision.” Moultrie was inspired by the announcement of Michigan City’s new slogan, “Create. Play. Repeat” developed for the city by a firm commissioned to devise a plan to rebrand Michigan City. “When the city went through the new branding session, I saw how music and events could attract more people to the downtown businesses as well as entertain a diverse population. I knew then, I had to be a part of this,” he said. Lighthouse Jazz Festival attendees will be treated to diverse musical sounds from the big band era, traditional straight ahead jazz, chamber music, soul, funk and smooth jazz.

An understanding of Burgundy

European destination great for wine lovers

T

he Grape Sense newspaper column has often focused on introducing new wines, new price points and an education focus about wine. There is no bigger educational high point in wine understanding than Burgundy, France. Burgundy is home to a confusing geography, hard to find wines and most of the world’s most expensive single bottles. Normally the focus is on value wine. But on occasion a look at other prominent wine regions helps with perspective. Additionally, I just returned from leading a wine tour group in Burgundy — my first-ever visit as well. Burgundy lies southeast of Paris where the whites of Chablis and silky red and whites of Burgundy

have a history going back hundreds of years. Many of the vineyards and wine making facilities date back to the time of Romans. Many of the vineyards and ancient winemaking efforts were started by monks in the early 12th or 13th century. Burgundy is a place for history. Perhaps the first educational point to get out of the way is a reminder that most all of France doesn’t tell you what grapes are in the wine on their bottles. You have to have a very basic understanding. In Burgundy reds are Pinot Noir and whites are Chardonnay. After that, it gets complicated. There are approximately 100 specifically designated wine growing regions or AOCs. The wines are named for the region and its growing

characteristics or terroir. An example would be Gevrey-Chambertin which is a small village and surrounding vineyards south of Lyon but north of Beaune, the heart of Burgundy. My group tasted four Gevrey Chambertin wines at Domaine Rene Leclerc. The four wines came from four different vineyards – with a difference in soil, slope, and micro-climate – even though all lie in the same region. And, the wines had slight differences. The area is known for wines of more structure and slightly more pronounced tannins. We tasted different in the earthiness you get in Pinot Noir and a slightly different level in the spiciness on the wine’s’ finish in your mouth. Okay, it’s pretty geeky

for a wine novice. A fact that surprised some of us was the production breakdown. In the U.S. if someone says the word Burgundy people think of red wine. Actually Burgundy is planted with 60 percent white wine grapes. The whites were consistently silky and elegant. The better white wines were rich with a full mouth feel while maintaining that silky texture. Good Burgundy seems to start around $50 or more in the U.S. So indeed, not the normal focus of Grape Sense. But they represent some of the best wines in the world and certainly worth a try. Burgundy is also one of the ultimate trips for wine fans. The walled-village of Beaune is a delightful home base with legendary wine caves beneath the city

streets, the famed Hospice de Beaune, and wine tasting shops, Michelin-starred restaurants, and charming hotels throughout the city. European wine travel requires advance planning. A trip to Burgundy is really the ultimate for real wine fans. Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, Indiana, writes every other week for more than 20 newspapers. Reach Howard at: hewitthoward@gmail.com

Music on a mission

'The Table' made possible by artist's fans

I

t was while protesting troubling legislation in the Michigan Senate, standing outside our local senator’s office carrying signs of outcry and singing songs of unity, that I first met musician Dan Deitrich. At the after-protest discussion over coffee and through our continued communication on the Internet, I came to know Dan as a person committed to his music and his personal beliefs. Those aspects come together prominently in his latest release, an EP titled “The Table.” “I’m a Christian and I work at a church,” Dan said. “We’re known for what we’re against because of the loudest, craziest voices in the media who claim to represent all of Christianity. I’m trying to dispel some of the negative stereotypes.” “The Table” is Deitrich’s musical message to push back against attitudes that his faith requires that

everyone to fit a certain mold. As he described it, the EP is meant to communicate that “everyone is invited to the table.” He was one of many in the crowd at the protest representing a common, but often unheard belief that Christianity is meant to unify, not divide. It is through his music he hopes to continue to spread that message. The EP was recorded in Durango, Colorado with producer Michael Rossback. Deitrich was able to fund the project using the crowdfunding tool, Kickstarter. Fans contributed money before the EP was made and received benefits for doing so. In addition to helping him with his expenses, the process also provided him a method to actively engage his audience and get them invested in the project. “It can be an awkward During recording, his thing,” Dan said. “On one chose to look at it is that hand, you’re asking people you’re inviting people into the supporters received regular for money. But the way I process of making the album.” updates about the behindthe-scenes work. Some contributors were even invited to sing back-up vocals on the album. “I really enjoyed the process,” he said. “It gets people involved, gets people excited about it.” “The Table” was born out of a deliberate plan. With three children and a full-time job, Dan would often find it difficult to balance creativity with everyday life. He had a moment where he realized he had not written a song for an extended period of time, so he set the goal to

write a specific number of songs. Once written, he declared his intent to himself and to the world to record them the following year. Even the choice to record in Colorado was deliberate, knowing he had to set the time aside and step away from daily life so he could complete the project. He found collaboration, both in the interaction with his fans on Kickstarter and with Rossback during recording. He described the “magic” of the studio process and the benefit of working with another person while recording. “My last album was just me in a studio late at night,”

he said. “It was nice to have someone else in the studio who’s passionate about the songs and has ideas about the songs.” The process created an excellent rock EP with a message universal to Christians and non-Christians alike. “I’m thrilled with how it turned out,” he said. Currently, Dan is out promoting “The Table” with local concerts, including a show as The Livery in Benton Harbor on July 14th. ‘Mary Poppins’ comes to life in the park

S

OUTH BEND, Ind. — Friday and Saturday evenings from July 22 to July 30, The Fischgrund Center for the Performing Arts will become the streets of London to present Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” South Bend Civic Theatre’s summer production at St. Joseph County Parks. Katie Kuehner stars as the practically perfect nanny opposite Pierre Cooks as Bert the chimney sweep, in this production sponsored by Merrill Lynch ‘ Matt Kahn Associates. Mark Abram-Copenhaver directs this production in collaboration with Music Director Roy Bronkema, Choreographer Callie Lorenz, and over 35 actors (full cast list below). “Mary Poppins” is based on the stories by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film. On Broadway it delighted audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memo-

rable adventures, but Jane and Michael are not the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” Tickets for adults and children are $15 when purchased ahead of time. Tickets are $25 for adults ($15 for kids) if purchased at the park the night of the show. Ticket purchase includes parking and admission to the show. Tickets can be reserved any time at sbct.org or by contacting the box office from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Want to pre-order a chicken tenders dinner box to enjoy at the park before the show starts when you purchase your tickets in advance? A $25 ticket includes chicken tenders, a bag of chips, cookie, and a bottled water, in addition to your admission to the show and parking! Contact the box office with any questions. On performance nights at St. Patrick’s County Park, WakaDog (July 22/23), Fiddler’s Hearth (July 29/30) will have hot dogs and specialty hot dogs available.
