Mike Yore Memorial Car Show kicks Off Beach Town Blast

S

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — It will be extra cool to hang out along the bluff in downtown St. Joseph, Friday when Honor Credit Union, the Paul & Rose Suchovsky Charitable Trust and St. Joseph Today present the Mike Yore Memorial Car Show to kick off the annual Beach Town Blast. This free summer event showcases classic cars along Lake Boulevard and classic music hits spun by local DJ, Hunter Stephen. “Area residents and vacationers are sure to enjoy the classic cars at Friday’s event,” said Whitney Behnke, executive director of St. Joseph Today. “But there’s lots more summer fun planned on Saturday and Sunday, too, including the return of our Lighted Boat Parade July 16 at 10 p.m.” Behnke said on Friday, classic vehicles would roll in throughout the day and line up along Lake Bluff Park for public viewing. Anyone with a car 25 years or older is welcome to participate and may contact Larry Pascoe at (269) 757-3149 for information. The car show officially starts at 4 p.m. with DJ Hunter Stephen spinning classic rock and roll tunes along Lake Boulevard. New this year, The Pit Stop beverage tent — sponsored by Bud Distributing will be hosted at Lake Park Place across from Schu’s Restaurant. Gates open at 4 p.m. with Bud Light, microbrews from The Livery and Round Barn and wines by Lazy Ballerina Winery, Tabor Hill and Round Barn Winery available for purchase. Behnke said in addition to Honor Credit Union and the Paul and Rose Suchovsky Charitable Trust managed by the Neumann Financial Group of Hilliard Lyons, event

sponsors include Beaudoin Electrical Construction, LeValley Chevrolet Buick GMC, Brookfield Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Mid-West Family Broadcasting and Aay’s Rental. Event attendees will also enjoy live music courtesy of the Friday Night Concert Series at the John E. N. Howard Bandshell that evening. Guests are encouraged to use the bench seating or bring blankets and lawn chairs for the grassy knoll. Picnics or takeout from downtown restaurants are welcome. Beach Town Blast events continue on July 16 with the 2016 Race for YMCA 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run presented by Chemical Bank. Money raised will benefit the Y’s Annual Campaign. Pecha Kucha, Volume 3 to be performed at Three Oaks

T

HREE OAKS, Mich. — Words inspired by beautiful horses, impersonating an architect and photographing Colorado ghost towns are just three of the stories that presenters will be show-ntelling at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, as part of Pecha Kucha, Volume 3. A pecha kucha is a concentrated form of storytelling, where presenters combine 20 slides with 20 seconds of live audio per slide. Because of this format,

presenters only have six minutes and 40 seconds to tell their story. Nine presenters, including Dianne Burgis, Mary Dean Cason, Gregg Fraley, Peter LeGrand, Re’Lynn Hansen, Andrea Petersen, Kate Ryan, John Smietanka and Sandra Thompson — will tell their stories using words and slides. Doors open at the Acorn Theater at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, and the show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6, available

at the door or online at indiganstorytellers.org under events. PK 3 Oaks, volume 3 is produced by Kay Hartmann, with co-producers Roger Batton and Elizabeth Nuti. Pecha kuchas were first created by a group of architects in Tokyo, who designed this visual storytelling format to keep their client presentations short and sweet. PK events are now in more than 900 cities around the world, including Three Oaks, Michigan.

Celebrating 200 columns

Grape Sense has grown since humble beginnings

E

veryone has milestones in their life. Think of events like birthdays, anniversaries, a new job, retirement, a first date, maybe even getting fired or divorced. As a society we’re pretty good at celebrating life’s events. Today’s Grape Sense represents the 200th piece I’ve written since starting an every-other-week newspaper column in October of 2007. At one point I had 23 newspapers in three states. It is a few less now but something I view as a great achievement and I’m proud of what I’ve done with this idea. Milestones deserve, no let’s make that require, celebration. How else would Grape Sense propose a celebration — but with wine, of course! Writing 200 columns about wine hasn’t always been easy but always enjoyable. I don’t really run out of ideas as often as fall short with the proper motivation.

I’m working on that. My celebration wine will be one of two choices. I’ll either open a bottle of Rochioli Pinot Noir from Sonoma’s Russian River Valley or Joseph Phelps’ Napa Valley Cabernet. Those are two great bottles of wine. The final choice will come down to what’s for dinner! The point here is to celebrate your life, and celebrate whether you feel like it or not. Time goes fast and pausing to really reflect on certain points in your life is rewarding and sometimes even educational. No, you don’t have to go out and find a $65 bottle of Cabernet. Just find something you know is really good. Find a wine you really like and enjoy it. It doesn’t matter if it’s red, white or pink. It doesn’t matter if you spend $10 or $100, just enjoy it. Happy Milestone Grape Sense readers! Column No. 201 is just two weeks away!

Indiana Restaurant Wine Award Winners If you’re a foodie and like wine, you certainly appreciate a good wine list. There are plenty of good

wine lists in Indiana but not a lot of great ones. I’m often shocked by the number of really bad wine choices. There were only four Hoosier restaurants recently recognized with a Wine

Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. That’s the second-highest honor. Indiana had no grand award winners (the top honor). The awards of excellence went to McGraw’s Steak, Chop & Fish House, South Bend; Peterson’s, Indianapolis; St. Elmo’s, Indianapolis, and The Capital Grille, Indianapolis. The third-tier ranking of Award of Excellence found

a few more restaurants — most of them in Indianapolis including Black Market, Fleming’s Steakhouse, Fogo de Chao, Harry & Izzys, Morton’s Steakhouse, Ocean Prime, Seasons 52, Shula’s Steakhouse, Sullivan’s Steakhouse, and Tastings (a wine bar). Award of Excellence winners elsewhere around the Hoosier state were Ciao Bella, Schererville; Heston Supper Club, LaPorte; Ford’s Black Angus, Terre Haute; Janko’s Little Zagreb, Bloomington; Joseph Decuis, Roanoke; LaSalle Grille, South Bend; Tapastrie, South Bend; Carriage House Dining Room & Gardens, South Bend; William B’s, Michigan City. Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, Indiana, writes about wine every other week for 20 Midwestern newspapers. Reach Howard at hewitthoward@gmail.com

Benton Harbor Farmers Market open for season

B

ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The Benton Harbor Farmers Market opened for another season Wednesday, July 6. The market will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday in the Dwight P. Mitchell City Center Park in downtown Benton Harbor. Each week from opening day through the end of September, the Benton Harbor Farmers Market will offer a wide variety of locally-grown and affordable fresh fruits and vegetables. The market welcomes Bridge Cards (EBT), Senior Project FRESH, and WIC Project FRESH coupons. For another year, the market will also offer people with Bridge Cards an opportunity to double their spending power with the Double Up Food Bucks program. Community members shopping at the market this summer will enjoy a variety of activities, including cooking demonstrations, taste

tests of the fresh produce available, and games for children. “There’s no better way to strengthen our local community than to shop and eat locally,” said Nicki Britten, deputy health officer at the Berrien County Health Department. “By visiting the Benton Harbor Farmers Market, residents are supporting our local farmers, our economy, and our community as well as getting healthy and fresh food for themselves and their families.” The Benton Harbor Farmers Market is operated by the Berrien County Health Department and supported by grant funding from Be Healthy Berrien through the United Way of Southwest Michigan. New vendors are welcome and encouraged to contact Nicki Britten at (269) 927-5607 or nbritten@ bchdmi.org for more information.

Freedom to Rock Kiss to play in Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak @leaderpub.com

K

iss is bringing its United States “Freedom to Rock” tour to more than 35 cities, many of which have not seen the band in more than a decade. Included in the tour are stops in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Aug. 12 and Grand Rapids on Aug. 13. Kiss, which has been performing for more than four decades, has had more albums go gold (500,000 copies sold) than any other American band in history. Kiss had had 30 gold albums — 26 as a group and the four solo albums they released together — and 14 platinum albums (more than 1 million in sales), along with three multi-platinum albums. Their concerts sell out around the world, so why head to secondary markets this summer? “Those are great cities and great markets to go into because we don’t get to play there as much and most bands don’t go there on a regular basis,” Tommy Thayer, lead guitarist for Kiss, said in a telephone interview. “The people appreciate it more than ever and they get a little crazier than ever too, which is great for the band because we love having that kind of energy happening. People who haven’t seen us in a while get the

opportunity to go see a great Kiss show.” Thayer said preparing for a tour is no easy task for Kiss. “I think it is a matter of keeping it fresh and new,” he said. “We are always looking at that, but at the same time, you need to make sure it is still classic Kiss and you hold true to the traditions and the signature parts of what Kiss is. It is a blend really. “For instance, this week, we are in rehearsal and we are working on the set list. We want to put some new deeper cuts in so its not just the same classic hits we play a lot, but on the other hand, 95 percent of the songs — ‘Rock and Roll All Night,’ ‘Detroit Rock City,’ ‘Shout It Out Loud’ — if you don’t play those songs, people go crazy, too. It is finding that hybrid between the classic stuff, the two or three deep cuts that keep it interesting and keep it fresh also. It is always a little tricky figuring out the set list.” Not only has the band been rehearsing, it has also

been getting into physical shape for the tour. With a show as demanding as theirs, each member must be prepared. Thayer said that the band begins rehearsals for a tour in a smaller room and gradually move to the full stage a few days before the tour launches. “We actually start in a smaller rehearsal room so we can play the music and hear what we are doing,” he said. “We listen to the vocals, get tight and work on a set list. You don’t have to be on a large stage to do that. Then we move to an intermediate type stage and then eventually, before the first show, we will get to the first venue a few days before the tour to rehearse with full production on the big stage. “At that point we want to make sure the video and the lighting looks right. We will actually do video rehearsals and analyze it to make sure things are looking right and the pyro is looking right from the band’s standpoint. There is a lot that goes into it. We

do a lot of conditioning before the tour. I was talking to Gene Simmons yesterday (June 30) and he was bragging because he has been doing these four- and five-mile runs up these hills near where he lives, grinding it out to get ready, which I really admire him doing that. Everybody has been doing that. I have been in the gym for a month or two now every other day. I have been practicing guitar parts. Believe it or not we do all that stuff because we take pride in what we do.” Tickets for the “Freedom to Rock” tour are available through Ticketmaster. Ticket prices vary at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne and the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
