Former Four Seasons members to perform at LMC

– Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro may not be household names, but in the 1970s, millions purchased their records, heard them on the radio, saw them on TV and went to their concerts.

So who are they?

They’re the former stars of the hit-making factory known as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

Polci and Shapiro toured the world with Valli, recorded numerous hit albums with him, and sang lead vocals on songs like “Oh

What a Night,” the biggest Seasons hit of all time.

When they met in 1973, they were two boys from New Jersey, barely out of their teens, and the Four Seasons hadn’t had a chart hit in years. Along with Valli and songwriter/producer Bob Gaudio, Polci and Shapiro successfully transitioned the group’s sound from ‘60s doo-wop to ‘70s pop, with hit songs like “Who Loves You,” and “Oh What a Night.”

Broadway musical based on the Four Seasons’ career, these former Seasons, who are now in their late 50s and early 60s, decided to reunite and give touring one more shot, along with an A-list group of musicians who wrote, recorded and performed with Carly Simon, Tommy James, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Jim Croce, Chicago, Luther Vandross, The Ramones, Carole King and other mega-star acts of the era.

They now call themselves The Hit Men, and they’re coming to The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College at 8 p.m.

the 2015-2016 Mainstage season.

The group’s show is a look back through rock and roll history, including stories of what it was like being on the road and in the recording studio with Frankie, Tommy, Carly, Jim, and Elton.

The Hit Men will perform songs frowm the Four Seasons song book including “Rag Doll,” “Dawn,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Marianne” and “Sherry.”

In addition, they will perform other hits that members of the band helped make famous such as “Peace Train,” “Leroy Brown,”

OUTH BEND, Ind. — While many people begin their Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee and the morning news, there are some people who start their weekends in the middle of Downtown South Bend under the gentle rays of the sun peeking through the buildings over the St. Joseph River.

For the past four years, instructors from local hospitals and gyms have held yoga classes, Zumba classes and more at The Gridiron Saturday mornings in the summer, free for anyone who wants to participate. Yoga is at 8 a.m., Zumba is at 9 a.m. and there is a mix of different high endurance activities at 10 a.m.

“Every year it grows,” said Downtown South Bend Events Coordinator Kylie Carter. “This year is our largest year yet.”

The Outdoor Fitness Series takes place Saturday mornings in the summer at The Gridiron. People can participate for free in yoga, Zumba and more.

Carter said that the yoga classes draw level of the participants varies greatly. about 50 people and the Zumba draws “There are teenagers through 70-yearabout 75 people. She said that the skill olds,” Carter said. “Instructors encourage participants to push themselves as their skill levels allow.”

She said that the program is designed to help bring more exercise options to the city of South Bend.

“It was started as a way to provide fitness opportunities for people that couldn’t afford gym memberships,” Carter said.

“Sometimes people are hesitant to come downtown because of parking,” Carter explained. “But on Saturday mornings, it’s easy to find spots.”

Downtown South Bend recommends that participants take advantage of free parking on the street and in the garage at Leighton Center.

If the weather is uncooperative, then the fitness program will take place inside the Leighton Center parking garage, as well. Carter said that this has only happened once this summer.

“Less people showed up, but we still held the program,” she said. “The draw is to be able to have sunshine on your face.”

Another draw may be the discounts some local businesses offer.

“Some of the restaurants have deals for people who participate in the Outdoor Fitness Series,” Carter said. “Sometimes, if you just look sweaty, you’ll be able to get a discount.”

This summer, fitness classes began June 13 and will run every Saturday morning through August 29. This upcoming Saturday, the program will feature a special children’s yoga class at 10 a.m., open to children of all ages (including any adult beginners).

Vickers, Fernwood to show two documentaries

ICHIANA — Documentary film buffs are in for a treat this weekend as two movies make their Michiana debut.

Chikaming Open Lands and Fernwood Botanical Garden have joined together to host an environmental film festival featuring two powerful films, “DamNation” and “More Than Honey.”

“DamNation” will be presented at the Vickers Theatre in Three Oaks at 7 p.m. July 30. The film reveals the ecological cost of two centuries of American dam building, from degraded waterways to the loss of wildlife habitat.

Critics say this powerful film odyssey across America explores the sea change and our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers.

“More Than Honey” will be presented at Fernwood in Niles on Aug. 1 beginning with a reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The film will be

screened at 7:30 p.m. in the Clark Gallery.

In this documentary, Oscarnominated director Markus Imhoof (“The Boat is Full”) tackles the vexing issue of why bees worldwide are facing extinction. Throughout the past 15 years, numerous colonies of bees have been decimated throughout the world, but the causes remain unknown. The film investigates this global phenomenon, traveling from California to Switzerland, China and Australia.

Registration is required, as seating is limited for both screenings.

Indiana’s grape crop and vineyards haven’t escaped the soggy summer woes either.

The rains have hurt vineyards most in central Indiana while southern vines have been spared.

“All the rain this year has made it especially difficult to control diseases,” said Bruce Bordelon, Purdue Professor of Horticulture and specialist in commercial grape and wine production. He said many vineyards avoided disease problems thanks to a dry month of May. “But, I’ve seen a tremendous amount of anthracnose (leaf spots and blotches) and black rot.

Shocking to see it so bad,” Bordelon said. “In some cases, it is due to a poor spray program, but in others, it is due to high disease pressure. We’ve had too many rains too close together to maintain ade-

quate fungicide coverage.”

Purdue’s grape expert said many of the problems could still be overcome with the most critical weeks of verasion (grape ripening) still ahead.

Don Pampel, owner of Whyte Horse Winery near Monticello, owns one of those vineyards impacted by the downpours.

“The heavy rainfall has made some of our vineyards extremely wet and holding water in the rows for extended period of time,” he said. “This has

caused stress on the vines and depleted some of the nutrients that they depend on and we are having to spray nutrients where we have not had to in the past. The frequency of the rain has caused challenges to keep the vines protected from fungus that the rain spreads.

“We will not know the damage until it gets closer to harvest and then it is too late.”

A big challenge with the heavy rainfall is vineyard management. There is the obvious cost of additional spraying and loss of crop but fighting the rainfall’s effect increases labor cost.

Bernie Parker, Vineyard Manager for Oliver Winery, said his crews have tried to stay ahead of the heavy rainfall by working the vines.

“Mildews have been a problem but we have had a lot more midseason growth that requires more manpower to manage,” Parker said. “We are shoot positioning and leaf pulling to open the canopy.

flow which helps with drying the clusters and canopy, also reducing the mildew problems.”

Oliver’s Creekbend Vineyard, just north of Bloomington, is on glently rolling slopes allowing excess rainfall to run off preventing flooding. But Parker notes the heavy rains cause a proliferation of weeds to be pulled.

Creekbend was one of many Indiana vineyards to take a hit in 2014 and 2013 from extremely cold winter and spring weather.

But Bordelon noted new vines and retrained vines should be benefiting from the additional moisture.

Parker agreed that his retrained vines were looking strong.

The rainfall’s impact lessens in the south. At Butler Vineyards, not far from Oliver, things are looking pretty good. “If we get drier weather starting around the first of August we will have a good year,” Jim Butler said.

Butler said normal August weather should deliver a strong crop despite all of the early rains. Rains have been mostly normal in the Ohio River Valley region. ”In Southern Indiana we have been very lucky in missing all of the large rain events and as a result we have remained very disease free,” said Ted Huber, Huber Orchard and Winery. “Vine growth has been very good plus we continue to remain warmer and sunnier than other parts of the state.

“Therefore, many of our varieties are already in veraison and picking up sugars quickly. We estimate that our harvest will being on August 15.”

Huber has the state’s largest vineyard with more than 20 varietals planted. Just down the road at Turtle Run Winery owner Jim Pfeiffer said the rainfall had not caused

Classic cars on the bluff 11th annual Concours d'Elegance of Southwest Michigan Aug. 8

JOSEPH, Mich. — The bluff overlooking Lake Michigan in scenic downtown St. Joseph will once again be the site of a spectacular collection of automotive history when the 11th annual Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance of Southwest Michigan returns Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance of Southwest Michigan is a highly-regarded invitational show featuring automobiles from the brass, classic, vintage, and muscle car eras, as well as an array of special-interest vehicles. Supporting the troops Baroda festival celebrates military

The fifth annual Support Our Troops Festival transformed the city of Baroda on July 25 with a parade, a car show, vendor booths and more. The Notre Dame ROTC also conducted a POW/MIA ceremony in the early afternoon, followed by performances from tribute artists and Bill Camp’s Famous Flying Dogs. The day concluded with a dance, a gun raffle and fireworks show. All profits from the festival went toward non-profit organizations that help support American soldiers and veterans, including those who are wounded and those with special needs.
