A comedian's comedian

Brian Regan receives high praise from celebrities By SCOTT NOVAK scott.novak @leaderpub.com

N

ew Buffalo, Mich. — Brian Regan is bringing his brand of comedy to the Silver Creek Event Center at the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo Aug. 19. Regan, who was born in Miami, Florida, has been doing standup since the 1980s when a football coach at Heidelberg College in Ohio, where he had played wide receiver, suggested he consider theater and communication. Regan was planning on being an accountant at the time. He worked his way up the comedy ladder and in 1997 released his first CD, “Brian Regan Live.” He has appeared as himself in numerous films and on television. He is known as a comedian’s comedian and was a favorite on the David Letterman Show where he appeared 28 times, the most of any comedian. One of his career highlights came in September 2015 when he received critical acclaim for his live

performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Regan says that fans may not be impressed with the staging of his show, but he knows he will deliver the goods.

“Doesn’t sound exciting,” he said in a telephone interview. “There is a stool, a bottle of water and me standing next to it telling jokes.”

His peers are all too happy to sing his praises, including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Dennis Miller, Jimmy Fallon and Patton Oswalt to name a few.

“It means everything to me,” Regan said of getting the respect of his peers. “I love making audiences laugh, but if people who do what you do like what you

do, that is an extra feeling of accomplishment. It is very flattering when other comedians tip their hat my way.” Regan said there is no difference in his show regardless of whether he is playing Radio City Music Hall or the intimate confines of Silver Creek Event Center. “The goal is always the same,” he said. “I always try to make the audience one thing. I make them this thing that I am trying to make laugh. It is easier for me rather than thinking of them as several thousand individuals that I am trying to get as much noise out of that audience that I can.” Regan’s form of comedy relates to a variety of ages. “I have jokes about signing mortgage documents and I have jokes about how my hip hurts,” he said. “In the next few minutes I may be talking about board games. I try to have a little bit of everything.” Regan will perform at 9 p.m. Aug. 19. There are only single seat tickets available at $65 for the show.

ILES, Mich. — Two area naturalists attribute much of their love for the outdoors to their love for the natural environment of southwest Michigan. On Saturday, Aug. 27, the public will have the opportunity to hear their stories and experience the outdoors firsthand alongside them on a field trip to the prairie. Kim Pilarski-Hall and Chip Schaddelee will speak beginning at 10:30 a.m. about the development and personal connection they have with the region and how that connection has influenced their lives in many ways. Schadelee began his career by teaching an advanced natural science course at Fernwood from 1976 to 1978, and would go on to teach science and biology at secondary schools for more than 30 years. Both speakers will talk about their childhood love of the outdoors and how classes at Fernwood inspired them in their careers, lifestyles and love of learning in nature. Pilarski-Hall will also give a brief overview of her late husband Rikki and his books “Six Legs and a Buzz” and detail how lifestyle choices and environmental awareness played out in their daily lives. The book will be available for purchase. After the talk, guests will go on a brief field trip led by Pilarsk-Hall and Schadelee to the prairie, and then to the oak-wooded sandbar area along the river. Schaddelee will point out insects, wildflowers and animals that live there. This event is free with admission. Those interested can register by visiting Fernwood’s website.

The Piano Guys to open Mainstage Season

E N T O N TOWNSHIP, Mich. — When the curtain raises on The Mendel Center Mainstage 25th anniversary season this fall, audience members will be treated to a special first performance when The Piano Guys take the stage. This one-night-only performance will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Hailing from Utah, ThePianoGuys are four dads who became an Internet sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos. They have made more than 50 since early 2011, including their hit video, an innovative multi-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and a reinvention of the hit song “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen. Critics say it is the Guys’ highly original blend of classical music with pop that has really been the cause of an Internet phenomenon and has led to more than 500 million

YouTube views, but the group believes it is their endearing personalities, along with their obvious will to inspire young and old that keeps the fans coming back for more. ThePianoGuys have appeared in People magazine and have performed on television around the

world. Some of their major appearances include: The Today Show, Katie, The Tonight Show, Fox & Friends, CBS This Morning, Huckabee, BBC Breakfast (UK), Globo TV (Brazil), Mario Barth Show (Germany) and more. They also had a national PBS Special Live at Red Butte.

Tickets for The Piano Guys are on sale now starting at $60. They are available online at TheMendelCenter.com, and through The Mendel Center Box Office at (269) 927-1221, from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more.
