Beach Bash to benefit local arts project B ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The ARS Gallery is celebrating its popular “I am the Greatest” project in true Great Lakes fashion — with a beach bash.

The third annual beach bash will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 4, and all proceeds will benefit the “I am the Greatest” project.

Leaders describe the bash as a “wonderful, funfilled night of live music,” featuring Concussions, a surf/rock band from Grand Rapids. The event will also feature food from local restaurants like Clifford’s Coffee Canal and Charlie’s Piggin’ and Grinnin’. Craft beer and wine will also be served.

In addition to the food and entertainment, guests will be able to watch live

painting and then have the opportunity to purchase the works at an auction.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, and can be purchased on the ARS website, at ARS Arts and Culture Center or at Third Coast Surf Shop in St. Joseph.

Together, ARS and Third Coast Surf Shop host a skateboard design workshop before the Beach Bash.

The workshop helps sponsor the I am the Greatest workshop, supporting area youth, and celebrating the life and impact of Muhammad Ali on the local community. These workshops are part of the “Kids helping Kids” program.

About the I am the Greatest project Located at the ARS Gallery Arts and Culture Center in Benton Harbor, the I am the Greatest sculptures were created by Detroit-based artist John Suave, and the I am the Greatest workshops were designed by ARS. Together, they have installed 16 of Suave’s Muhammad Ali inspired sculptures throughout Benton Hrabor and St. Joseph.

The goals of the project are to bring public art to the

Benton Harbor Arts District and St. Joseph, to tell Muhammad Ali’s story and to educated at-risk youth through the arts.

Leaders say the project was designed to introduce the famous boxer to a new generation of youth. The project highlights the overwhelming amount of adversity Ali faced by standing up for his beliefs.

By telling his story, project leaders hope to inspire youth to make a difference in their own communities.

Workshops at ARS Arts & Culture Center have been developed to teach local, at-risk youth about community, public art and the impact that one individual can have on a community.

Shakespeare Festival presents ‘The Winter’s Tale’

OTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival (NDSF) will continue to present William Shakespeare’s beautiful tragicomedy, “The Winter’s Tale,” through the end of the month.

The show, which opened Aug. 18, will continue to play through Aug. 30, at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

Set in the contrasting worlds of cold, suffocating Sicilia and warm, nurturing Bohemia, The Winter’s

Tale weaves together music, magic, courtroom drama, shipwrecks, and bear attacks.

Sicilian King Leontes unfairly accuses his wife, Hermione, of adultery with his best friend, the King of Bohemia. When Hermione gives birth to her daughter, Leontes orders the child to be killed and banishes Queen Hermione, tearing his family and the two kingdoms apart.

However, through the intervention of the mystical Paulina, the princess is

saved, Leontes repents, and Sicilia softens after sixteen years of turmoil—with the help of a little magic.

Directed by Drew Fracher, a 25-year veteran of regional theaters throughout the United States, The Winter’s Tale explores themes of jealousy, family, and eventual repentance.

“In The Winter’s Tale,” Fracher explains, “through the glory of Shakespeare’s language and storytelling, we watch a cast of all-toohuman characters fail and

then find spiritual growth, reconciliation, and forgiveness. How blessed they are, how lucky. I wish the same for all of us.”

The Winter’s Tale brings together professional actors and designers from around the country.

Featured in starring roles are Grant Goodman who will be appear at London’s Globe Theatre this fall, L. Peter Callender of the African-American Shakespeare Company, and Wendy Robie from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.

Creative music coming to Sawyer

HotHouse festival relocates from Lakeside

AWYER, Mich. — On Saturday Aug. 29, the nonprofit arts organization HotHouse will present a one-day star-studded music festival in Sawyer, Michigan.

The HotHouse Creative Music Festival brings together many of the musicians that have been featured on the long running critically acclaimed series “Jazz on a Summer’s Day” presented by HotHouse.

The acclaimed concert and performing arts series was formerly showcased in the Lakeside Inn. The death of the owner last August prompted HotHouse to seek a new location for its series.

The featured artists include many of the world’s top creative improvising artists. They are regular winners in the (“jazz bible”) Downbeat Critic’s Polls and appear at top performing arts centers and museums around the nation. This occasion is a rare chance for Harbor Country to hear and mingle with this caliber of avant-garde artistry.

Veteran impresaria Marguerite Horberg is founder of the fabled nightclub HotHouse. HotHouse has long been one of the world’s premiere stages for Jazz and eclectic contemporary cultural expression. HotHouse has been bringing the same world renowned international talent to Harbor Country since 2009. The artists featured on the festival are all top-tier musicians presenting wholly original work; are widely praised as innovative composers and artists and are featured at festivals throughout the world.

HotHouse chose the gallery and studio of artist Joe Hindley as the site for this year’s one-day mini-festival. Hindley’s studio is in the converted Flynn Theater in downtown Sawyer, conveniently located in the epicenter of Harbor Country enchantments. The funky environs filled with Hindley’s murals, paintings of rural Michigan and noir street scenes will provide a great atmo-

JAMES SANDERS is a violinist with dozens of jazz and classical credits in his career. He is a member of Dee Alexander’s Evolution Ensemble and was featured on her recent Down Beat 5-star reviewed CD, Wild is the Wind. He appeared with Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble in her tribute concert to Alice Coltrane in Millennium Park, and is a member of Alfonso Ponticelli’s Swing Gitan, Reneé Baker’s Mantra Blue Free Orchestra, and Doug Lofstrom’s New Quartet.

Over the course of the event, the artists will play in their own ensemble then mix it up in improvised combos. Audiences are invited to witness the spontaneous conversation between seasoned improvisers. In fact, the point of the program is to provide opportunities to have access to a rather complex structure of music and an informal access to these talented musicians in a way that

they might not otherwise experience.

Featured artists include EDWARD L. WILKERSON, JR., is an internationally recognized American jazz composer, arranger, musician, and educator based in Chicago. As founder and director of the cutting edge octet, 8 Bold Souls, and the 25-member performance ensemble, Shadow Vignettes, Wilkerson has toured festivals and concert halls throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. Defender, a large-scale piece for Shadow Vignettes, was commissioned by the Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest Fund and featured in the 10th Anniversary of New Music America, a presentation of BAM’s Next Wave Festival.

JULIA A. MILLER is a sound artist, guitarist, improvisor, composer, visual artist, curator and educator. Julia is a founding member of the Chicago Scratch Orchestra and also a founding member of the artist collective Articular Facet.

Julia is a frequent soloist and collaborator in experimental and avant garde chamber music. Poetry and the voice live at the heart of Julia’s work, and poetic documents as scores, performative objects, and new media poetics are part of Julia’s ongoing exploration into the hybridization of voice, instruments, electronics, and video to create an organic whole from one source of material (her voice).

ABOUT HOTHOUSE HotHouse was founded in 1987 to provide a forum for expression in the arts that was under-represented elsewhere in the Chicago cultural community. It was created primarily to curate multi-arts and educational activities that bolstered the prominence of innovative artists working in the margins of the commercial market and to facilitate events that amplified a variety of progressive social movements. The New York Times wrote of HotHouse “few clubs anywhere offer a wider range of first-rate world music, from wildly vibrant Afro-pop to avantgarde jazz than HotHouse.”

Walk for the hungry Zombie event to benefit food bank

OUTH BEND, Ind. — South Bend Zombie Walk LTD will be partnering with Niles Scream Park to bring the Michiana community the 2015 South Bend Zombie Walk.

Leaders invite everyone to help the community at the seventh annual event from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Howard Park in South Bend.

As always this is a free, family friendly event for all ages. Instead of monetary donations, leaders ask that participants bring all the non-perishables they can carry to help supply the Food Bank of Northern Indiana with enough food to make it through the upcoming holiday season.

This year organizers say they have planned a bigger, better event with more vendors, a kids’ zone, two stages with more entertainment and double the contests. Three local bands will perform throughout the day and as always, Pro Wrestling King will coordinate you three zombie matches.

In the Kids Zone there will be several games for the children to play, the South Bend Fire Department Smoke House, a coloring contest and a mural painting. Bubbles the Clown will be providing face painting and Zendor the Magician will be on stage as well as doing roaming magic throughout the day.

The event also features several vendors selling horror art, T-shirts and food, and makeup artists will be on hand to give out zombie makeovers.

The walk will kick off at 6 p.m.

Continuing the ‘journey’

Three Oaks distillery continues to expand facilities, services for customers

HREE OAKS, Mich.

— With nearly four years of success as a distillery and a destination for drinks, dining, and entertainment, Journeyman Distillery has plenty to celebrate.

The Three Oaks spirits manufacturer will be doing just that, with a planned anniversary party in October. Owners plan to raise a toast to more than past success, with an expansion of their location in the EK Warren Historic Featherbone Factory that will add additional production space, as well as a full restaurant designed to create a new Journeyman experience.

According to Nick Yoder, marketer and distiller for Journeyman, the expansion will include a restaurant, called the Stay Maker, which will have “a focus on Detroit-style pizza,” a rectangular, deepdish variety known for its extra flavor created by caramelization during the heating process.

The development into the north side of the building will also create a second production space, with five times the still size, growth Nick noted is necessary due to increased demand for the company’s whiskey and other distilled products.

The distillery is hoping to time the launch of the new facility with the upcoming celebration of four years since the business opened its doors to the public. An anniversary party and expansion inauguration is planned for Saturday, Oct. 3. The all-day event will include live music from three musicians, a bottle release of their Three Oaks Single Malt Scotch-style spirit, and “a surprise people will just have to come out to see.”

Journeyman Distillery was opened in October of

2011 by Bill Welter. Bill started his journey toward distilling while golfing for Missouri State University.

Upon graduation, his desire to continue the sport took him across the ocean to Scotland, where he worked in restaurants at night so he could golf during the day. He eventually found his way to Tasmania in 2009, following a friend he met in Scotland who was opening his own distillery. He spent a year there as an apprentice before returning to the states to hunt for the appro-

It took months, but Bill would eventually find the Featherbone factory in Three Oaks. Though in a state of disrepair after sitting mostly empty since the 1950s, the building’s aesthetic was ideal. According to Nick, Bill “stumbled onto the building and just fell in love with it.”

In order to circumvent the delay of the aging process, it is common practice for an emerging spirits maker to source their first release of product from another facility, simply picking a barrel and labeling it as their own in order to have bottles to sell when they open for business.

Journeyman took a different approach, with the distillers creating their first batch of whiskey themselves in the Koval Distillery in Chicago.

Bill transported the barrels to Michigan and let them age while the building was prepared. When

the doors opened in October 2011, Journeyman had its first genuine batch of Ravenswood Rye (now known as Last Feather Rye), named for the neighborhood in Chicago where it was created.

Since that time, Journeyman has expanded its selection of whiskey, as well as producing varieties of gin, vodka, rum, brandy and coffee liqueur. The establishment offers a menu of snacks and sandwiches.

Journeyman has become a destination for entertainment, offering daily tours of the production facilities and cocktail classes. The location has become a favorite performance space for musicians both local and touring. Live music is offered most weekends and each July features the Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey party, a celebration that includes a cookout, music, and a new spirit release.

Journeyman leaders open up the Artisan Market, giving local artisans a chance to display and sell their wares in a pop-up market at the distillery. Owners are also experimenting with new events, most recently including a “tap take-over”

Journeyman Distillery has worked to become a destination in Three Oaks.

According to Nick, the businesses and the town work together and benefit each other, with each bringing their own crop of patrons that then visit other places.

Nick says people will “go to see a show at the Acorn [Theater] or eat at a restaurant downtown, but before they’ll stop here for a drink.” It’s all a part of the community’s continued expansion, growing as a local destination while they do the same in spirit manufacturing & distribution.

— Registration is officially open for the fourth annual Run to the Center of the World 5K Race & Walk, organized and hosted by Friends of New Troy.

The activities will begin at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at dusk (approx. 9:30 p.m.).

Guardians of the Galaxy activities on the Gridiron includes: • Superhero Costume Contest- judging will taking place at 8:00 p.m. These costumes can be completely DIY, and do not necessarily have to be existing superheroes. Have fun and be creative! There are three divisions: children (ages 10 and under), teen (ages 11-17), and adult (ages 18+). Winners will receive Downtown Dollars.

11th Annual Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance of Southwest Michigan award winners and wrap-up

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The 11th annual Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance of Southwest Michigan attracted 3,000 visitors to Lake Bluff Park in downtown St. Joseph, Michigan on Saturday, August 8. With comfortable temperatures in the low 80s and mostly cloudy skies, photographers were happy and spectators cool. Nearly 100 automobiles were on display including a section for “special interest” cars not included with the 80 Concours competition.

For 2015 the Concours committee established a variety of featured classes: 1965 full-size cars celebrating “The Class of ’65;” a station wagon class called “Groceries, Kids and Vacations;” and “Showroom Showdown” featuring Cadillac and Lincoln models from similar years to show the differences in style and design between the two major automakers.

Roy Sjoberg, known as the “Father of the Viper” was special guest at the show and presented a talk at the Friday evening reception dinner. Sjoberg was chief engineer for Viper and many of his original team attended the dinner and the Concours. More than a dozen special Vipers were on display in the Special Interest area.

All vehicles in the show participate in a “pass-in-review” with introduction and narration by famous classic and collector car expert, voice of many of the most prestigious Concours events in the county including Amelia Island, Ed Lucas. Lucas has been with this show from the beginning and offers a rich and colorful commentary on every car.

Next year’s Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance of Southwest Michigan is planned for Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016. Sept. 4 Acorn Theatre invites you to attend “Off to Farofa Brazillian World Music.” Off To Farofa originated one night in LA, in late 2014, when a trio of young Brazilian musicians made a video and put it online before heading to a gig.

From the overwhelming response to the video the next day, it was clear that Off To Farofa was onto something big. By the time they followed up with a second video as a quartet, the band was already regarded as a pivotal new sound on the Brazilian and World Music scene. The band uses jazz, pop, and classical music as the colors to a musical palette that includes Brazilian rhythms such as maracatu, afoxé, samba, and sertanejo.
