See it to believe it Illusionist to perform at Lerner Theatre in Elkhart
E
LKHART, Ind. — People all around the world have seen him on NBC, CBS and FOX. Now, Michiana has the chance to see him live. Illusionist Bill Blagg is coming to the Lerner Theatre at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, for one show only. Blagg has been hailed by critics across the country for his unique style of magic and illusion. His action packed show features random audience volunteers floating in mid-air while others vanish at a moment’s notice. The illusionist’s big break
occurred when he won a prestigious magic competition at the age of 18 in the “Magic Capital of the World” in Colon, Michigan. He went down in magic history as the youngest contestant to ever win the event. By winning he joined the ranks of his idols, which include Las Vegas’s very own master magician Lance Burton. Bill is widely regarded for his unconventional style of magic, which doesn’t involve cliché tricks with playing cards or birds. Instead Bill prefers to thrill his audiences with his incredible grand-scale illusions such as instantly teleporting
across theatres and squishing his body to just 5” tall! Critics say Blagg combines his magical talents with his quick wit and off-the-cuff personality which creates an incredible experience for all ages. Tickets to see The Magic of Bill Blagg LIVE! on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Lerner Theatre are on sale now — but disappearing fast. To purchase tickets at the $32 or $22 price levels, visit TheLerner. com or call (574) 293-4469. The box office is located in the building at 410 S. Main St. (please use the Franklin Street entrance).

Easy listening Crane Wives open Hanson Living Room series
B
ENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Hanson Theatre Living Room Series returns for a third season to The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College with The Crane Wives at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. The Crane Wives are a homegrown, indie-folk outfit from Grand Rapids, Michigan. They utilize three-part vocal harmonies, eclectic instrumentation, and a passion for song-craft to create organic music that is both accessible and innovative. Each live show features contagious energy as well as original music that
ranges from whisper-quiet ballads to danceable grooves. The band formed in late August of 2010 and has released four full-length albums, “Safe Ship, Harbored” (2011), “The Fool In HerWedding Gown” (2012), “Coyote Stories” (2015), and “Foxlore” (2016). “We’re excited about the third season of the Hanson Theatre Living Room Series. Not only is it fun to present these fresh acts who are breaking onto the music and performing arts scene, but it gives us an opportunity to try some new things to enhance the experience for our patrons,” said Mike Nadolski, executive
director of The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College. One of those new experiences during The Crane Wives’ show will be an array of craft beers and food from The Livery in Benton Harbor. The brewery's craft beer creations will be available at the cash bar in the Hanson Theatre lobby before the show and during intermission. Beers will include a “Regular Rotation” staple, a “Specialty” limited release beer, and a selection from their “Barrel-Aged Series.” Owner and Head Brewer Simon Rusk will share a little bit of the brewery’s history, brewing philosophy and plans for
the future. The Livery will also provide samples of their house-made, spent-grain pizza along with beers available for sampling from growlers. The Hanson Living Room Series is a live music experience in the intimate setting of the 250-seat Hanson Theatre. The venue is designed for maximum viewing and listening pleasure, and provides audiences with the opportunity to connect more closely with the performers and the performances. Other shows in the series scheduled for Feb. 10 and March 31, 2017, will be announced in the coming weeks.

OUTH BEND, Ind. — People can enjoy a night out in downtown South Bend where dinner and entertainment will all be under one roof, while contributing to fundraising efforts for the South Bend Civic Theatre. The first weekend in November, SBCT will be lighting up both stages for a unique, two-day fundraising event. The inaugural “Entertainment Buffet” will take place Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, featuring a variety of entertainers and performances, from Broadway tributes, standup comedians, cabaret singers and more. Tickets grant patrons admission to one evening of the “Entertainment Buffet” which includes a simple buffet-style dinner and the luxury to enjoy performances on both the Wilson and Warner Theatre stages, as well as a cabaret lounge in the main lobby featuring favorite performers from SBCT’s past and present. Organizers say there is no need to get the cufflinks and brooches out; the

Registration opening soon for Fernwood’s environmental studies program
N
ILES — Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve will soon be taking registrations for its Environmental Studies Programs for the 20162017 season. Each year nearly 5,000 area students and youth groups participate in Fernwood’s ESP programs, either on-site at Fernwood or through the in-school Travelling Naturalist program. All programs are based on a science curriculum that incorporates both basic state guidelines and hands-on activities at age-appropriate levels. Most importantly, Fernwood’s naturalist staff strives to make every Fernwood experience fun and positive for each student. Fernwood prides itself in teaching children to be more responsible stewards
of our environment. The curriculum in the ESP program supports what the schools are currently teaching, and onsite visits give children hands-on experience. “I love the walk around the grounds,” a teacher said recently. “It’s amazing how much more a stu-
dent will remember when they can actually experience and see it in nature. I showered my students with questions when we returned. They not only knew the answers, but they had examples to back them up!” On-site programs at Fernwood run 1.5 to 2
hours in length and are tailored to the season. The fee is $3.50 per student. Teachers and adults are free (donations accepted). In-school Travelling Naturalist programs are offered January through March with limited availability during the rest of
the school year. Fees start at $50 for one class/program and increase based on the number of programs, with an additional 45 cents per mile above 20 miles round-trip from Fernwood. Registration for the 2016-2017 school year opens at 8 a.m. Wednesday,
Aug. 31, and available slots fill quickly. For more information about Fernwood and the ESP, please visit our website or call Head Naturalist Wendy Jones at Fernwood. Leaders of the organization say Fernwood is a special place where nature blends with gardens and art to create an experience of wonder for all ages. Fernwood comprises 105 acres on the St. Joseph River near Buchanan, Michigan, at 13988 Range Line Road, Niles. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time, and Sunday, noon to 6:00 pm. Café hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. Call (269) 695-6491 or visit fernwoodbotanical. org for more information and to confirm status of classes.

ICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — The Ship and Shore Blues Festival arrives this Labor Day weekend Sept. 3 through Sept. 4 and for its second appearance, bringing Blues Hall of Famers and a diverse group of talented, soulful, blues musicians to Michigan City, Indiana. Last year’s success with the festival drew more than 6,000 people and prompted Artistic Director John Moultrie to extend the festival to a two-day affair that includes live music, an abundance of food trucks, beer and wine vendors and games for children. Last year, the festival was recognized by The Beacher as the best blues festival of 2015. This year, the standard is nothing less. “We are hoping for a big blowout,” Moultrie said. It is anticipated that 10,000 people will attend for the weekend event. Moultrie’s nonprofit Live Music Matters, which sponsors the festival, has functioned with the mission to bring live music to people in the Michiana area while providing an affordable outing for the whole family. And despite today’s abundance of online resources for music, there is something about seeing a live performance that Moultrie said is irreplaceable. “Live music matters to me because it’s the only time that you see an art form that’s in the moment and it’s
original,” Moultrie said. This year, the musical itinerary pays homage to blues of all ages. Take 22-year old guitarist Ivy Ford, whose repertoire includes opening for blues legend Buddy Guy and rocking out with her band, Ivy Ford and the Cadillacs. With her iconic red guitar slung over her shoulder,

Ford’s style builds on classic blues, seasoned with electrified guitar licks. Moultrie said the versatile blues genre allows for artists to ultimately create their own classic sound. “Blues has a great depth of history, so it was an opportunity to bring a multitude of different styles,” he said. “Everybody at some point identifies with the blues.

of Blues is in every musical art form.” Combine Ford and the Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings, an R&B influenced blues band and already there is a spectrum in many shades of blue. Throw in the mix legendary blues musician Gene Barge, the Chicago Kingsnakes and Blues Hall of Famer Liz Mandeville and the audiences can expect a wide sampling of unique blues sounds. Moultrie said he also wanted to use the festival to give youth a chance to see live musicians. On Sunday, the Michigan City schools are invited to a picnic to see the musicians. “There are a lot of kids that have never seen live music before. (It’s an) opportunity to see world-class musicians,” Moultrie said. More than anything, Moultrie said the festival is celebration of blues and there will be a few special cameos from blues musicians, who may not be on the lineup, but are not going to miss the opportunity for a jam session. “(It’s) the idea that you have a band that can be diverse (and) they all come together to play the music and they play in harmony with each other,” Moultrie said. Tickets can be purchased online for $10. To attend both days costs $15. VIP tickets are available between $15-$20. Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate, but will cost an additional $5. TOURIST FOR A DAY
An American tribute 9/11 Never Forget Mobile exhibit opens Aug. 31
M
ICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — The 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, an interactive educational exhibit that features artifacts, videos, recordings and live tours by FDNY firefighters, will come to Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa for a six-day visit starting on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The exhibit will be open daily from noon to 7 p.m. from Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 5. It will be staged in the front parking lot at Blue Chip. The exhibit is open to all ages. The exhibit offers free admission with opportunities to donate to its nonprofit partner, the Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit is a high-
tech, 53-foot tractor that unfolds into a 1000-squarefoot exhibit. The memorial provides interactive education, including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos, recordings of first responder radio transmissions and live tours conducted by FDNY firefighters. The exhibit was created in 2013 by the Stephen
Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation as a tribute to all those whose lives were sacrificed on Sept. 11, 2001. It is named in honor of Steven Siller, a New York firefighter who gave his life helping others on 9/11. “Our goal, on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, is to provide an enlightening experience
and to help people to understand what took place that day and the ultimate sacrifice that so many made,” said Lisa Reiss of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit will receive a first responder escort from LaPorte County Emergency Services, Police, Fire and EMS, along with The Guardian Riders and The Wall Gang. At approximately 11 a.m., the exhibit semi will leave from Harley Davidson on Franklin St. and travel to Pine Street to Route 12 and end at Blue Chip. Visit http://tunnel2towers.org/activity/never-forget-exhibit/ for more information about the exhibit.

Berrien County Fair Photos by Craig Haupert and Kelsey Hammon Like most of the region, the Berrien County Youth Fair was flooded by heavy rains that rolled through town last week, but that did not stop the fun for thousands of people, who flocked to the fairgrounds in Berrien Springs. Youth of all ages showed a variety of farm animals, life skills, crafts and other still projects throughout fair week. Others traveled from all over the region to enjoy fair food, contests, vendors and other activities.
