DOWNTOWN SOUTH BEND

T. JOSEPH — Dowagiac artist Alli Farkas’ work will be afeatured in an exhibit in rSt. Joseph from Sept. 23 through Jan. 16. n The Inn at Harbor &Shores will host a recepAtion for Farkas and her eexhibit, “Sky Pads — Wa t e r Lily Interpretations,” from 5 to n7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 “My paintings are the rresult of thin layers glazed over one another; the underlying composition must be strong and the paint must be applied with a purposeful technique,” Farkas wrote in her artist statement. “Whether a portrait, landscape or renderings of rural buildings, I construct the image through layers, attempting always to create a sense of depth through transparency, color and light.” Farkas said “Sky Pads” began as a simple act of photographic recording without any particular purpose in mind. Farkas was inspired to create the project by Mill Pond, which her property in Dowagiac borders. “Because the Mill Pond is so shallow, it is populated (some would

say overrun) by a variety of water plants, including water lilies,” Farkas said. “Over the years I have photographed the water lilies several times, thinking perhaps I could revive the subject matter of a series of paintings I did some 25 years ago. There was the magic — the lily pads looked like they were suspended in clouds instead of floating on water.” Farkas said after looking at her photo collection, she decided she did not want to interpret the subject realistically. “I began with extremely delicate renderings of pads, sky and water, which continued through the first four paintings,” the artist said. “Sensing a need to search further, I let both the colors and the shapes take on a more defined character.” At the time she wrote her artist statement, Farkas said she had created 10 paintings for the series. “There will undoubtedly be more,” she said. “Monet painted approximately 250 versions.” The event is free and open to the public, and guests will be served wine

Beach Bash to benefit ‘I am the Greatest’ project

B

ENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The fourth annual “I Am The Greatest” Beach Bash is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at ARS Gallery-Arts & Culture Center, located at 147 Fifth St., Benton Harbor. The event benefits the “I Am The Greatest” project, which supports area youth through arts and cultural education, and uses the story of Muhammad Ali to teach at-risk youth lessons about community and personal growth. In two-week workshops hosted at ARS Gallery-Arts & Culture Center, teens learn to express themselves through introspective writing, creating and expressing their thoughts and feelings through artistic media. “The workshops are designed to teach and assist youth in accessing their strengths and determining their goals, through lessons about community public art and the history of Muhammad Ali,” said Anna Russo-Sieber of ARS. “For two weeks at a time, we become much more than an art center and learning environment. We become a home, as meals are shared, values are modeled, theory and design are taught, and genuine expression is encouraged.” Presented for the fourth year through a partnership with Third Coast Surf Shop, the Beach Bash will feature local food, craft beer and wine and a silent auction. Live music will be provided by Grand Rapids-based band The Concussions, who put a modern spin on 1960s instrumental surf music. Throughout the event, local artist and surfer Gustavo “Goose” Lamas will create a Muhammad Ali-inspired painting, which will be available that evening in a

live auction. Tickets are $30 or $35 at the door, and can be purchased on the ARS website, at ARS Arts & Culture Center, or at Third Coast Surf Shop (212 State St., St. Joseph), and St. Joseph Today. The “I Am The Greatest” workshops were designed by ARS Gallery Arts & Culture Center, which installed Detroitbased artist John Sauvé’s Muhammad Ali-inspired sculptures throughout the

cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. The goal of the “I Am The Greatest” project is to bring public art to the Benton Harbor Arts District and St. Joseph, to tell Muhammad Ali’s story and to educate at-risk youth through the arts. “This project introduces Mr. Ali to a new generation of kids,” Russo-Sieber said. “His story highlights the overwhelming amount of adversity he faced

by standing up for his beliefs and the influence he had on his generation. As a result of telling this story, we hope to inspire a new generation to realize that they can make a difference.” Workshops at ARS Arts & Culture Center have been developed to teach local, at-risk youth about community, public art and the impact that one individual can have on a community. Students ultimately create and exhibit their own Muhammad Ali-inspired sculptures throughout Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, and in schools and clubs for the past four years. This program has educated hundreds of youth from public and private schools, as well as Boys & Girls Club youth, since its inception in 2012 through an after-school program at ARS. “Arts education also builds selfesteem and leadership in our youth, and with our writing skills added to the progression, we are seeing great results in the outcome,” Russo-Sieber said. Marcel Parent, education director and arts curator for the Muhammad Ali Center visited the ARS Gallery/Arts & Culture Center to learn about and see the “I Am the Greatest” project and workshops in action, and to speak to our youth. They also visited the Boys & Girls Club (which is the group of youth that ARS works with) of Benton Harbor and spoke to the club about leadership. “Arts programs fulfill the need for developing critical thinking, developing creative and problem-solving skills, as well as devoting all of your energy, efforts and ability on one task, and to present volunteering without expectations of something in return,” Parent said.

music as among his influences. The powerhouse ensemble’s hypnotic live performances have allowed them to tour alongside Santana, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, Plant & Page and many others. It is a culmination of everything we have learned it is truly is a career record for us.” High Times wrote, “Thank goodness peace, love, and great grooves haven’t fallen out of fashion, because Rusted Root delivers all this and more with their seventh studio album, The Movement.” The current tour lineup is Michael Glabicki (lead vocals, guitar), Liz Berlin (vocals, percussion), Patrick Norman (vocals, bass, percussion), Dirk Miller (guitar) and Cory Caruso (drums).

Bota vs. Black Box wars

Y

ou’re a wine drinker and you’ve passed them in your local grocery. You look at them with curiosity, puzzlement, and perhaps even disdain. It’s time to lighten up to box wines and enjoy the often tasty and economical solution to wanting just one glass some nights. Boxed wines are better than ever before and shaking off the past negative images of swill in cardboard. There is no point trying to convince anyone the grocery boxed wines are super, high-premium wines because for the most part they are not. Some brands will advertise that way but it’s misleading. Two of the most prominent in the Midwest are Black Box and Bota Box. A definition or two is in order before going any further. The boxed wines come with an air-tight plastic pouch inside with a pour spout attached. Generally, once opened, the wines will last a month. The container holds four bottles of wine. Different companies do offer different sizes and various price points.

Now some advice about handling the boxed wine. I suggest refrigerating it after opening to make it last as long as possible, particularly if you’re going to keep it four or five weeks. If you’re a regular wine drinker, it’s probably less necessary to stick it in the fridge. The wine is in a sealed plastic pouch so it gets no air whatsoever. No air is a very good thing for storage but not so much for drinking. Pour your glass of wine from the box and let it set a bit before you drink. The box contains 20 five-ounces pours. Black Box has been a long-time player. Black Box got its start in 2002 with the promise of superpremium wine in an environmentally friendly box. Black Box is a leader in the business and sells for around $23. You can find it for as low as $19.99 in many places. The Black Box menu includes Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Shiraz, a red blend called Red Elegance, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvingon Blanc, and Reisling. The wines have

been listed by Wine Enthusiast 27 different times as a “Best Buy.” Go online for lots of reviews and you’ll see the Merlot is often the highest rated. In small market Indiana, all I’ve found is the Cab and Chardonnay. The Cabernet is a satisfying glass of wine with soft fruit, correct Cabernet flavor, and an ever-so-light hint of tannins. It’s quite drinkable. The Delicato Family Vineyards company of brands from Manceta, Ca., offers Bota Box. The Bota lineup includes Cabernet, Merlot, Old Vine Zin, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Chardonnay, a blend called Redvolution, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscato, and a second blend called Blackhawk. The Bota Cabernet was a bit sweet but probably likable for newer wine drinkers. I didn’t find it to be correct in flavor profile for Cab but there was certainly nothing wrong with it. I bought the Bota Brick which sold locally for $9.99, a smaller version of the standard box.

COLUMNIST

Howard Hewitt Grape Sense

Keep in mind most of these wines are blends. In California, for instance, a wine only has to include 75 percent Cabernet to be called Cabernet. And let’s face it, this isn’t Napa Cab. I’d rate the Black Box significantly better for regular wine drinkers and Bota a good starting point for a beginner. Black wins the nod for overall quality. Check the blog from time to time as I intend to explore more boxed wines. All stores have them. Many Meijer stores have a

large selection. The best part of boxed wine is enjoying one glass at a time. Don’t underestimate the quality until you’ve tried them. I would love to hear from regular Grape Sense readers if you have thoughts

on other brands. I’ll share that in a future column. Howard W. Hewitt, Crawfordsville, Indiana, writes every other week about value wine. Contact Howard at hewitthoward@ gmail.com
