Scream Park returns with special guest Niles Haunted House welcomes "Halloween's" Tony Moran

By CRAIG HAUPERT craig.haupert @leaderpub.com

n addition to offering all new thrills and scares this season, the Niles Haunted House Scream Park will welcome the actor that portrayed the psychotic killer Michael Myers in John Carpenter’s classic horror film, “Halloween.” Tony Moran will appear at the Scream Park, located at 855 Mayflower Rd., Niles, from 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20. Moran, the older broth-

er of Erin Moran, who played Joanie in the television series “Happy Days,” will be available on the midway to meet with fans and sign autographs. Pete Karlowicz, manager of the scream park, said fan response to Moran’s appearance has been overwhelming. More than 38,000 people, Karlowicz said, saw a post on the park’s Facebook page about Moran coming. “This man has an incredible following,” he said. “I’m not sure what to expect on that weekend. There could be a lot of people here.”

How did the park secure the celebrity? One of the park’s employees, Virgil Taylor, is a huge fan of Moran and gave him a call. Moran agreed to come and to allow Taylor to be his personal driver for the weekend. “He (Taylor) is in heaven. He can’t wait for it,” Karlowicz said. All new scares Now in its 41st season, the Niles Haunted House Scream Park changes its attractions from year to year. When faced with a sad situation, the village of New Troy decided to come together through a community event: the Run to the Center of the World 5K.

Community pride drives 5K run

Village of New Troy hosts Run to the Center of the World By D.E. MESSICK

N

EW TROY, Mich. — About eight years ago, the town of New Troy began experiencing a big and potentially traumatic change. “When a community loses its school, it loses its community,” Terry Hanover, a New Troy resident said. “The campus had been there for 160 years and to lose it was to lose our soul,” he continued. “And there was an opportunity to save it." The community of just 400 residents gathered around the facility to do so and decided to open the New Troy Community Center. “It has really brought the community back together,” he said. The community center that developed out of the former school now boasts

a wintertime flea market, memorial gardens, outdoor classrooms, trails, playground and recycling program. It hosts history presentations and even has a library of 4,000 books with a free reading hour for kids. “We've done quite well and we're pretty proud of what we've accomplished,” Hanover said. But the New Troy Community Center is in constant need of funding. Since the center is not funded by tax dollars, they must get all their funds from community support, donations and fundraisers such as the upcoming Run to the Center of the World 5K Run. This year is the third annual event and will continue to benefit the New Troy Community Center with all proceeds going to the facility that is operated by the nonprofit organization,

Friends of New Troy. “This year, it has already proven to grow quite a bit,” Hanover said. With the support of many local businesses and individuals who have donated their time and effort, the Center of the World 5K Fun Run is proud to announce that for the first time, they will be offering prizes for runners in many different categories including first place overall, best costume, largest team and longest distance traveled. First place medals will be awarded in each age category, and the name and time of first place overall winner will be engraved on a brick to be permanently mounted in the New Troy Community Centers Friends Garden. There will also be a free breakfast for runners thanks to the many donors from local bakeries, stores

and restaurants. All participants will also receive goodie bags with nutrition foods and helpful items, along with a free t-shirt. The Run to the Center of the World 5K Fun Run begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 20. While early registration ended Sept. 4, runners and walkers continue to register until the day of the race for $35. Registration forms may be picked up at the New Troy Community Center or the Center of the World Woodshop in Harbert, or online at www. FriendsofNewTroy/ announcements/. For more information, contact Terry Hanover at (269) 426-4199 or the New Troy Community Center at 269-426-3909. The New Troy Community Center is located at 13372 California Road, New Troy, Michigan.

Collectible lunchboxes

T

his season, children are sprinting from the breakfast table to the bus stop as the school year gets underway. As consistent as the bus rolling into neighborhoods near and far is the lunchbox. In the early 1900s, lunchboxes were nothing more than metal carry-alls that protected the mid-day meal of immigrant factory workers. By the 1950s, lunchboxes were one part container and one part consumer product. Marketing to children became synonymous with this portable promotional tool. Post-war lunchboxes featured television, cartoon, and movie characters. The first lunchbox focused on the ever popular Hopalong Cassidy as his images was placed on an Aladdin lunchbox in 1950. Hopalong’s image was transferred to a lunchbox by way of a decal that was stuck on the side of a traditional metal lunchbox. A few years later, American Thermos introduced the

dollars from collectors. Like TV characters, icons from the movies are popularized on vintage lunchboxes found at flea markets, yard sales, and at online sales. Values range from about $25 to $500 depending on various factors and based on when you decide to sell your lunchboxes. The most active time to trade away your vintage lunchbox is during the month of September when those school buses are back on the streets of your neighborhood. The lunchbox teaches us a lot about how collecting vintage objects is much more than just child’s play.

SPOTLIGHT

The show must go on Buchanan's Tin Shoppe Theatre hosts 'Old Rugged Cross' despite construction

I

By Jill K. McDonald

n the heart of Buchanan, Michigan, lies a true gem. It is where stories are told and songs are sung, and is filled with rich history. Anyone who has ever been to downtown Buchanan or the Farmers Market has been just steps away. It may be under renovation, but visitors shouldn’t be fooled. Once they step inside, they will see the Tin Shoppe Theatre truly come to life. In its 30th year of live community theatre, the Tin Shoppe Theatre is considered a landmark with rich history and a gem worth preserving for generations to come. It was originally built in 1865 by a Buchanan merchant who used it for a furniture factory. It has since operated as a lumber business and a manufacturing plant for Clark Equipment, to name a few. In 1984 the building became a theater, and remains an asset to the Buchanan community. The building is currently under renovation, adding insulation and new siding. This will allow the theater to have a longer production season, which typically is May through September. A major funding drive is under way to fund the project, with support from Gateway Community in Buchanan and the City of Buchanan. Tax-deductible contributions are greatly appreciated to help offset funding costs. Gracing the stage at the theatre for the next two weekends will be “The Old Rugged Cross.” Organizers describe the show as a family-friendly production about a pastor who tries to keep control over the church and the

Travis Smith. This will only be the second time the production has been performed in Michigan. Buchanan’s rendition of the musical is comprised of 14 cast members, with veterans to the stage and newcomers alike. Cast member Julie Blaylock, who plays Phyllis, said people should come and enjoy the play because “It’s fun, and there are great hymns,” This is Blaylock’s fourth production at the Tin Shoppe and she loves working with Kring. Cast members are: Patricia Baltazar, Bobby Blaylock, Julie Blaylock, Garrett Brackett, Jennie Brackett, Phil Brackett, Brendan Cross, Rebecca Cross, Mary Diethrich, Trevor Hough, Nora Kaltenbach, Kari Prouty, Abigail Weldy, and Stephanie Weldy. Stage Manager: Lyndi Shepardson. Tech Operator: Megan Goodrich. Music Director: Carol McKeen. Assistant Music Director and Pianist: Judy Earnst. Show dates and times are as follows: Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 12, 13, 19, 20 — 7:30 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 14, 21 — 4 p.m. Those interested in purchasing LEADER PHOTO/Jill McDonald tickets should call the box office Bobby Blaylock (Bill) and Julie Blaylock (Phillis) perform a scene from "Old Rug- at (269) 695-6464. ON DISPLAY

Enjoying the beauty of Southwest Michigan New artist featured at the Inn at Harbor Shores

S

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — During their stay, guests at the Inn at Harbor Shores are greeted by a beautiful view of Lake Michigan outside the facility. Beginning next weekend, guests and community members will have the opportunity to see another beautiful view without ever leaving the building. An artist reception featuring “Watercolors” by Robin Maxon is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 18 at The Inn at Harbor Shores, 800 Whitwam Drive, St. Joseph, Michigan. Maxon, of St. Joseph, is the second featured artist to be displayed in the area’s newest gallery. Maxon’s watercolor paintings feature various Southwest Michigan scenes and will be on display now through Nov. 3, 2014. “When I paint I attempt to capture the light and color of something common, natural or unexpected. I appreciate the beauty of a simple moment or expression and the play of light on the subject,” Maxon said. The Inn has a unique relationship to the arts and in celebration of this relationship is planning this reception to introduce guests of The Inn and the community to the artists that comprise the permanent collection along with the featured gallery artist. The art program at The Inn has two components: the permanent

Artists tell complex stories with more subtlety and elegance than

traditional media,” Wilczak said. The Inn hopes that guests will come away with lasting impressions and an understanding of the history and fabric of the community. “Ultimately, I hope the viewer will enjoy my attempt at capturing the emotion and expression of a subject and that it remind them to

observe these simple moments in their own lives,” Maxon said. The signature permanent piece at The Inn is, L'eau d'Vie, a glass installation consisting of over five hundred hand blown pieces, by April Wagner of Pontiac, Michigan. The installation greets guests as they enter the lobby and can be seen

from the first and second floors. Inn guests, community members and art enthusiasts are invited to celebrate the talents of these artists featured throughout the Inn at Harbor Shores from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014. Several of the artists will be attending.
