Taste of the season Apple products tent a popular destination during festival

N

ILES, Mich. — From seeing the rustic brown leaves get carried away by the breeze, feeling the cool wind on the back of one’s neck or smelling the rich aroma emanating from a late evening bonfire, nothing quite stimulates the senses as the beginning of autumn.

If there is a single taste to complement the season, it is sweet juiciness that can only come with taking a bite out of a crisp apple.

True to the name — and theme — of the this year’s event, “It’s a Sweet Festival,” organizers with the 2016 Apple Festival will again offer visitors a chance to enjoy the flavor of this crop during the upcoming gathering, which takes place Sept. 29 through Oct. 2.

The festival will again host the apple products tent, located near the main office of the festival grounds in the concessions area. Volunteers will sell different kinds of apples and apple-

related products to customers inside the tent, which will also have seating for customers, said Craig Crocker, a member of apple products tent planning committee.

Added to the festival around 15 years ago, the tent allows people to stop by and have a taste of the event’s namesake.

The tent will have different apple-related goods from sev-

eral local companies, including Country Bake Shop, Holloway Orchards and Jolly Orchards, Crocker said.

“We try to sell different things each year to keep up the variety, but the big things are always the baked goods, cider and the apples themselves,” Crocker said.

In addition to selling a different assortment of fresh apples,

the tent also has racks of freshly baked apple treats, like pies, cookies and dumplings, which are often enjoyed with a scoop of ice cream, Crocker said.

“The bakers work around the clock to keep up with the demand,” Crocker said. “It is nonstop.”

People can also buy cider, either in cups or by the gallon, he said.

While around 20 volunteers with the festival will staff the tent on Thursday and Friday, organizers will offer several local nonprofit groups a chance to earn some extra cash through working inside the tent on Saturday and Sunday, Crocker said. On those days, members with several local groups, including churches, Niles Service League, Project Graduation and Boy Scouts, will serve customers visiting the tent, with the festival paying them all a wage for their service.

People who have had their fill of apples will have a chance to sample a variety of different tastes during the festival, as organizers have 65 vendors lined up to sell their dishes in the concessions area. While some will also have apple-related products, many will serve classic fair fare, such as corndogs, elephant ears and French fries.

“The Apple Festival is like the last hurrah of summer, so a lot of people who come out want to eat fair food,” Crocker said.

A fond farewell

Retiring Niles mayor to serve as grand marshal

N

ILES, Mich. — In 1998, Mike McCauslin marched in the Four Flags Apple Festival Parade behind a vehicle loaded with signs that read “Mike McCauslin for Mayor.”

Since then, the mayor to Niles since 1999 has been a presence at the Four Flags Apple Festival, whether riding a float or watching from the sidewalk with his wife Lucy and kids.

“I have watched the parade every year for many years,” he said. Even through undesirable weather, the mayor was there to see the parade with the rest of the town.

“We have sat through the parade in torrential downpours,” he said.

This year, residents of Niles can expect to once again see McCauslin at the 44th annual parade that starts at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1, only this year he will be honored as grand marshal after 17 years of serving as mayor and many, many Four Flags Apple

When: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 Where: Through downtown Niles, ending at Niles High School Festival Parades, McCauslin will make his final run in the parade as mayor.

“I think it will be really just nothing more or less than an opportunity to participate as one of the final acts of being mayor,” he said.

When Katie Lowe, from the parade board called McCauslin to ask him to be the grand marshal, McCauslin said he was delighted.

“Well I was surprised and excited,” he said.

Lowe said the decision was made by she and co-chair Veronica Pockrandt.

“We knew he was retiring this year,” Lowe said. “And thought it would be nice to have him in our parade this year. We like to pick people who are (part) of this community.”

As for his duties as grand marshal, McCauslin said the hardest part is showing up. The board will provide him with a convertible and he will ride through the streets in the nearly five-mile parade with

his wife Lucy.

But for McCauslin it isn’t really goodbye. Even after his term as mayor ends, McCauslin said residents can expect to see him at the parade and Four Flags Apple Festival.

“I really just think it is a great festival,” he said. “The neat thing about the apple festival is it has something for everybody.”

After this year’s parade, McCauslin said that he and Lucy plan to take a walk around and visit some of their favorite activities such as, the craft booth. And he said, who doesn’t like to indulge in a little fair food?

This year he said they are also hoping to catch the firework show and enjoy as many apple products as possible.

As for what he will miss about being Niles mayor, McCauslin said there were just too many things to divulge in a single interview, but at least the Apple Festival won’t be one of them.

Rocking the Apple Fest Free live entertainment offered Friday and Saturday

housands of people are drawn to the Four Flags Area Apple Festival by the sweet smells of apple treats and the sight of large carnival rides full of smiling faces, but another big draw is the sound of high-quality entertainment throughout the weekend.

That will not change this year as Chris Higbee returns to the festival to perform Oct. 1 and Endless Summer performs Sept. 30.

Higbee is not only a singer, but a talented fiddle player who writes songs as well.

He grew up a farm boy who was curious about music.

That curiosity quickly became a passion that led him to a life as a professional musician.

He founded the PovertyNeck Hillbillies in 2000, which disbanded in 2007. It released a pair of albums and drew international attention.

Since that time he has released two full-length albums and an EP, which better reflect his musical roots — “Chris Higbee,” “High Five Fun Pack” and his latest “Ready or Not.” His song “Fiddle Rock” off his first release is a tribute to his late father and was co-written by the album’s producer Tommy Harden and Don Rollins, who wrote “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” the smash hit for Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett.

The song “Angry American,” off his latest release “Ready or Not” really gets the crowd fired up during

his high-energy show.

“They will see energy, excitement, fiddle playing and craziness,” Higbee said. “We do a song I wrote called ‘Angry American’ and people stand on stage and hold the flag, usually veterans. My wife is a veteran. It is a pretty magical part of the show. My family is on stage with me. Our show is everything. From the time that I walk on the stage to the moment I walk off the stage is the happiest for me.”

Higbee said that he could write a new verse every week to “Angry American” considering what the country is going through right now. But instead of getting mad, he writes songs and performs them.

“I love being on stage,” he said. “Everybody is crying and bellyaching about peace and everybody getting along while other people are trying to kill us.

"Man it is some screwed up times and it is hard to know what to think about it. So rather than getting upset and taking my frustration out on everyone around me I write music and I sing that song. It is a little therapy for me I guess.”

Higbee performs more than 150 shows a year and is looking forward to returning to Niles.

“I remember all the apples,” he said. “The board members took me back and let me try every kind of apple that they had picked there and I found out my favorite was the Fuji apple. What I remember the

most was how awesome everybody was. I really cannot wait to come back. In fact, we are planning to do a lot more shows in Michigan next year. I am really excited to come back and see all the people.

Higbee will perform at 8 p.m. in the entertainment tent Oct. 1.

Fruitful competition

Prizes up for grabs in various contests

ILES, Mich. — Apples are a huge part of the culture of southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, and people of all generations in the area have likely tried their hand at activities related to the apple harvest.

Each year, the festival offers a number of contests where people can show off those skills — and earn cash while doing it!

Biggest apple contest Area farmers keep an eye on their biggest growing apples throughout the season and give those fruits just a little more attention. Once the apple gets to the right size, they carefully pick it and deliver it to the Apple Festival, where it is displayed until judging.

Apples are measured from stem to bottom and back to the stem, as well as around the middle of the apple.

Growers can submit their apples for judging between 4 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 in the Apple House. Judging is at 5 p.m. Friday. The biggest apple grower wins $100. Second place gets $50 and third place wins $25.

Scarecrow contest Geared toward people of all ages, this contest judges artistic ability in creation of fall staples.

Scarecrows can be scary, funny, themed — anything family friendly goes.

Scarecrows can be entered between 5 and 8 p.m. Friday or 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the Apple House. Scarecrows will be displayed throughout the festival, and judged onsite at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Prizes are awarded in three categories: original, funny and not so scary. First prize for each category wins $50. Second place wins $20 and third place wins $10.

Old-fashioned log sawing contest Teams of two race to see who can saw a log the quickest in one of the most competitive events at the Apple Festival.

Eight categories will award prizes: boys ages 5 to 7; girls ages 5 to 7; men ages 14 to 17; women ages 14 to 17; men ages 18 to 60; women ages 18 to 60 and seniors 60 and older.

First prize in the 5 to 7 yearold categories win $10. Second place wins $5.

First place in the 14-17 yearold categories win $50. Second place winners get $25.

Top log sawers in the adult and senior categories win $80.

Second place winners get $40.

The contest is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. under the tent. Everyone is

invited to cheer on the participants as they compete for the fastest time.

Anything apple Bakers compete to see who can create the best apple treat. Entries can be submitted in one of three categories — pies, cakes or pastries — and are judged on taste and appearance.

First-place bakers in each category win $75. Second-place baked goods win $50 each.

Bakers should enter their goods in the Semco tent from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Live judging will take place at 5 p.m., and winners will be announced shortly after.

Beard and mustache contest Faces get fuzzy during the fall season, and festival coordinators have a long tradition of taking advantage of facial hair for an annual contest. Bears and mustaches are judged on bears and mustache length, greyness, darkness, lightness and uniqueness.

Prizes include trophies, T-shirts, gift cards, hats, combs and hair care products from local salons.

Those wishing to enter can do so at 5 p.m. Saturday in the entertainment tent.

Apple seed popping This event offers fun for area

youth. Participants stand behind a line and flip their seed as far as they can, and seed poppers with who pop the farthest win cash prizes.

There are two categories for this event: girls and boys ages 14 and older and girls and boys 13 and under. First-place in each category wins $50, second-place wins $10 and third-place gets $5.

Registration is at 10:30 a.m. and the contest begins at 11:30 a.m. in the activities tent.

Harold Galbreath “Galley” Memorial Horseshoe tournament Starting with two-person teams, horseshoe competitors advance through several elimination rounds to determine the best horseshoe players. The last team standing wins.

The process repeats with four-person teams and a singles round.

The event lasts throughout the day Sunday, and costs $10 to enter.

Lip Sync contest Those participating in this contest must have pre-registered prior to festival, but everyone is invited to sit back and relax to the live entertainment as lip syncers of all ages perform to popular tunes from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the entertainment tent

Winners will be awarded in three categories: ages 7 to 12, ages 13 to 17 and ages 18 and over.

First-place winners receive $300. Second-place winners earn $200 and third-place winners get $100.

Apple peeling contest Just as the name describes, whoever peels the apple fastest is declared the winner. Contestants are also judged in longest continuing peel.

Those interested can give it a try at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Apple House. First-place winners get $30. Second-place gets $25.

Apple pie “eating” contest Apple Festival coordinators say this is one of the most entertaining activities to watch, as it can get a bit messy. Contestants compete to see who can clean their pie plate the most in one-minute — using no hands!

Winners in four categories will be awarded: youth girls and boys, and adult men and women.

First place youth win $50.

Second-place youth win $10 and third-place youth win $5. Adult first-place winners win $100 each. Second-place winners win $20 each and third-place winners get $10 each.
