Buchanan gets a brewery

Lehman’s Orchard to put tap room in former Clark building

UCHANAN — A new brew pub is getting set to open in downtown Buchanan.

Steve Lecklider, the manager of Lehman’s Orchard in Bertrand Township, said the business plans to make and sell its own line of beer, spirits and wine at the former Clark Equipment Building at 204 N. Redbud Trail.

Lecklider finalized the purchase of the 12,000 square foot building from the City of Buchanan earlier this month.

The new establishment — which has not been named yet — will be a licensed distillery, brewery and winery, meaning all three activities can take place on site.

Lecklider said the plan is to renovate the building and begin selling some of its own products like jams, jellies, wine and cider this fall.

Then, if everything goes smoothly, he plans to open a tap room in the spring of 2016, complete with tasting and a light menu.

“The timeline is still flexible,” he said. “It will take a couple months to finish the roof and start the store.”

Lecklider said the beer lineup would change with the seasons. For instance, they will offer heavier beers like stouts or porters in the winter and fall, and lighter beer like Kolsch in

Acorn Theater connects community, offers opportunities

T

HREE OAKS — The mission of the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Michigan, has long been to provide a venue for fans to experience high quality performance and for artists to cultivate their talents. By transitioning to a nonprofit status in March of 2015, the theater is evolving to further that undertaking.

According to board member and founder, David Fink, the change was necessary to give the theater the freedom to make “decisions based on mission, not finances.”

Moving forward, the theater should not appear any different to the audience. Theater leaders still plan for the Acorn to be a destination for traditional theater, comed, and music ranging form rock to opera to jazz. If any differences are noticed, it is the hope of Executive Sandra TDirector Thompson that it is that of more quality and diversity in local and affordable live entertainment.

The Acorn’s weekly open mic night is one of

many projects that is hoped to benefit from the non-profit status.

Thompson’s desires for the Tuesday night event are lofty, with her desire for it to be “the most phenomenal open mic anywhere.”

The popular, free event provides a professional sound engineer and a space where artists are listened to and nurtured. The theater works to include artists of a higher caliber into the evening, giving both audiences a guarantee on entertainment quality level and the newer artists the chance at being mentored by those more experienced. According to the Acorn Theater, the event regularly brings in close to 15 performers and an audience of around one hundred people.

The Acorn Theater is also known for its work in finding and promoting emerging artists. Each year, they host the Singer Songwriter Competition, in which musicians are invited to submit music, with the chance to perform on stage before a live audience and judges,

some from the entertainment industry. They can win cash prizes and garner attention for their work. Thompson refers to the event as a “real value for aspiring musicians.”

Maintaining and expanding these programs and finding other methods to provide value for artists and the community was the main motivator for the change to non-profit status. These events, while

beneficial creatively, didn’t provide profit for the theater and, in many instances, were not financially sustainable.

The theater hopes to sustain itself going forward with assistance from the c o m m u n i t y.

Crowdfunding and membership programs will provide supporters with special benefits, such as reserved seating and access to special events.

Ivy Tech, Fire & Water team up to host food and wine festival

ICHIGAN CITY, Indiana — Michigan City is bringing wine tasting a little closer to northwest Indiana this autumn. More than 70 local and international wines and locally brewed beer will be featured at the Fire & Water Food and Wine Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3.

To kick off the event, teams of culinary students from Ivy Tech Community College will battle each other not just for bragging rights, but for a chance to win a scholarship.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our students to gain real-life, hands-on experience," said Michigan City Campus President Rick Soria J.D. "And, we are honored to join Fire&Water in showcasing the value our community college to our community."

The winning team will win a culinary scholarship, which is funded by proceeds of the event.

The Fire & Water Food and Wine Festival is from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 CST. The event is located at Fire & Water 6 on Lake Michigan near Washington park in Michigan City, Indiana.

Thompson explains that different contribution levels will receive different rewards, comparing it to public broadcasting fundraising.

The comparison is apt, as an Acorn Theater coffee mug is one of many rewards available to participants in their IndieGoGo campaign.

Designed to cover the annual expenses of the open mic night, the fundraiser offers a number of rewards in exchange for theater supporters helping to cover what it costs to open the doors and pro-

duce the event each week.

The event’s popularity is exemplified in the positive response the campaign has already received.

“I’m very excited,” Fink said. “It’s a sustainable model. If the community continues to embrace us financially as they have artistically, we’ll have a long solid future.”

The specific open mic campaign continues until Oct. 17, and regular memberships for general support of the Acorn Theater will be coming soon.

Give peace (water) a chance

A

ll 80 Indiana wineries offer something a bit different.

Sometimes that’s good different and sometimes not.

Many have a unique niche’ in the Indiana wine industry.

Peace Water Winery, Carmel, is one of the state’s newest and probably most unique wine operations.

Owner Scott Burton owns a winery in Northern California. He employs a California winemaker. His wines aren’t sold there.

The Peace Water Winery tasting room is in downtown Carmel, Indiana.

“Indiana has many wineries,” Burton said. “But several (of those wineries) source fruit and juice from outside of Indiana to supplement grapes grown in state. We grow all our grapes from the vines and do everything in Napa. The entire process from vine to bottle occurs in California but we sell all of our wine here in Carmel; therefore, making us the only locallyowned California winery in Indiana.”

The concept is certainly unique but it doesn’t stop there.

Burton, a very successful corporate lawyer and entrepreneur, opened the winery in the fall of 2014 as a family business and as a philanthropic endeavor.

He designates 50 percent of his winery’s profit to seven different local charities. His seven children picked the charities which would benefit from wine sales.

The unique twist is when a consumer buys a bottle of Peace Water wine at the tasting room they are given a ticket. They drop the ticket in a basket representing one of the seven charities of their choice.

“It’s an interactive experience,” Burton explained.

“A lot of businesses have a charitable aspect. Here, you have to physically go make your donation instead of participating in a mindless transaction where you have no concept of who you’re helping. It resonates a lot better when you make that decision yourself.

Hopefully, it creates a more lasting impression.”

The business has been a success in its first year.

Burton said wine insiders said he’d be successful if he could sign up 100 wine club members in his first year. In late August, his wine club membership was more than 200. “Local restaurants have been talking to us about our wines so we’ll be on menus soon.

That’s the next phase of our growth.”

His urban-feel tasting room was filled on a late August Thursday evening.

The newly opened patio was also busy. His wines have done well already in the wine competition business.

The high-end Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc both scored well at the World Wine Tasting Championships in Chicago.

The Cabernet Sauvignon “Passion” has been his biggest seller. The $32 bottle

is a good representation of California wine. The wines are definitely made in a consumer-friendly, fruit-forward style. The winery tasting notes suggested a lusty red with notes of blackberry and plum - right on target.

Most of the Peace Water wines range from $25-$48. The white, Rose’ and two reds tasted during my visit were all wellmade wines. I particularly enjoyed the reds.

There is one indulgence and that’s “Nirvana” — a

T. JOSEPH, Mich. — The Gallery in The Inn at Harbor Shores is proud to host an artist reception featuring selected oils and pastels by Susan M. Henshaw and ceramic works by Lynne Tan in an exhibition titled: Fluid Movement, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23.

This exhibition will be on view through Jan. 2, 2016.

Both artists incorporate organic use of shapes and lines in different ways: natural rounded abstract forms based on those found in nature much like fractals are seen in the work of Lynne Tan. Flowing waves of Susan Henshaw capture the movement of water and freeze that motion and allow the viewer to examine the detail of the fluid nature of that element.

The Gallery at Harbor Shores celebrates the talents of these artists and exclusively showcases Michigan artists in the rotating exhibits located on the second floor of The Inn at Harbor Shores. months in a refugee camp in Austria, the family was granted asylum in Canada.

There, in St. Catharines, Ontario, a five-year-old Tomáš witnessed his first circus. He became passionately interested in clowns, circus, theater, and magic.

At age nine, he presented his first performance before a circle of elderly magicians. By age 13 he had an agent. He performed in coffeehouses between folk-music acts and while still in his teens, he made his circus debut with a Brazilian clown duo as the rear half of a two-person horse. There was no turning back.

Working any and all jobs related to showbiz, the enterprising Kubínek was able to save money and travel to Europe to study with some of the world’s greatest teachers of theatre including Monika Pagneaux, Pierre Byland, Jaques Lecoq, and Boleslav Polívka.

These studies, combined with his own tireless experiments in the art of live performance, led to the cre-

ation of his award-winning solo stage shows which play to capacity crowds at theaters, international arts festivals, and in television broadcasts throughout the world.

Kubínek has worked with theatre artists around the globe. He has been featured on Czech National Television with the celebrated actor and clown Boleslav Polivka on Mr. Polívka’s annual TV Specials. With writer and comedian Frank van Keeken he has performed in numerous guerilla-style absurdist theater sketches at

the HBO Workspace in Los Angeles. He has appeared with the U.S. theatrical circus Circus Flora. As “guest villain,” he masterminded an elephant kidnapping, terrorized spectators, and later plummeted 40 feet into the ring after fencing on the high wire with Tino Wallenda of The Flying Wallendas.

Glass, photographs featured at artist reception

NION PIER, Mich.

— A Southwest Michigan gem filled with art glass and nature photographs depicting the area’s beauty is waiting to be discovered off Red Arrow Highway in Union Pier.

The Artists at Ateliers opened its doors in April 2015 with the largest collection of fine art glass in the region. Two of the area’s finest photographers have added their interpretations of the landscape to the mix.

All the artists reside in Southwest Michigan.

The gallery where the art is displayed fits perfectly with the transparency, light and nature of the art.

“The glass and photos represent and harmonize with the water and landscapes that are found in our area. We wanted an open, natural structure that would help set the tone for our vision,” said Cindy Fielding, one of the coordinators for the gallery.

The glass comes in a wide array of forms, ready to complement any home or office.

“We have statement pieces as well as accents for your home. The artwork also raises gift giving to another level. Giving a on-of-a-kind piece, specifically selected for the recipient is a treasure that can’t be found in the mass produced market.

The Artists at Ateliers consists of 16 artists, eight of whom are permanent.

The artwork displays are updated on a regular basis.

Fall getaway offered

ARSHALL, Mich.

— Cornwell’s Turkeyville is preparing for their family friendly fall season of fun, frights, and memories.

Every weekend in October, Cornwell’s holds its family friendly “Haunted Adventures,” open from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Some of the activities include a pumpkin patch, spooky hay ride, and Haunted Barn. The Mid Michigan Railroad is scheduled to have their train rides running every weekend in October.

Each year the owners alter the theme of the Haunted Barn to explore all of the aspects that Halloween has to offer.

Some past haunts have been Alice in Wonderland and classic Halloween.

This year’s theme is reminiscent of the things that caused your imaginary night time fear of monsters: shadows.

All of the walls have spooky shadows thrown across them; but participants be warned, there are things lurking in the shadows, so prepare to be spooked. The haunts found

in the barn are appropriate for even young children, and employees willing to help out the most scared of kids. Wristbands include all activities and last all day, and cost ten dollars per person, excluding babes in arms.

The dinner theatre will be hosting two different shows during the fall season. The first is “Nunset Boulevard,” showing through Oct. 24. The musical is about sisters invited to sing at Hollywood bowl, and then become disappointed it’s at HollywoodBowl-A-Rama, a bowling alley with a cabaret lounge; they were hoping to be performing at esteemed “Bowl.”

The sisters soon find out that an audition is being held by famous director James Todd about a famous movie star becoming a nun, so during the intermission of their performance the girls go to audition. The question remains whether one of the girls will be lost to Hollywood, or whether they will all return to perform, once again, in Hoboken.

The second show to be performed is “Abra Cadaver,” an interactive murder mystery held on Oct. 30 and 31.

Parking Day Outdoor fun fills downtown Dowagiac Leader photos by TED YOAKUM Before people began to pack the stands at Chris Taylor Alumni Field for the Chieftains’ home game against Allegan Friday, many stopped by the tent pitched in front of Beckwith Park downtown to see what was going on with the engineer scarecrow that had set up shop on Front Street that afternoon.

Volunteers with Wightman & Associates and the City of Dowagiac greeted people who visited the temporary park that afternoon during the city’s first ever Parking Day. Popping up for only a few hours that day, the event was a way to give visitors to downtown a fun way to spend a few minutes, as well as to solicit feedback what people love about Dowagiac and what they would to see in the city. Around 100 people showed up to the event, with organizers receiving dozens of comments, which were posted on the scarecrow (which will be featured during next month’s Under the Harvest Moon Festival).
