Key returning lettermen: Matt Vaughn, Cole Searles, Hunter Janowiak, Ashton Kwieran, Chandler Plew, Seth Brown, Zack Grishaber, Toby Fox, Brady Duval, Jeshua Wiese Top newcomers: Austin Balos, Jordan Hunt What do you think about your

conference? The conference is different this year, so things are unknown, but what I do know is that it will be a very competitive league. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? No real surprises or anything. What intangibles will be needed

to push your team over the top? I feel that we should be very competitive this year. I like our make up and experience. The kids have been together for a couple years in high school and many years before this so they really understand each other and our strengths and weaknesses.

Makenna Hartline, shortstop; Michaela Hartline, centerfield;Sydney Carlson, first base; Morgan Crocker, pitcher/ third base; Chelsie Luczkowski, right field/catcher; Destiny Bennett, pitcher/outfield Top newcomers: Lexi Kwerien, second base/outfield Strengths: We are now four deep at the pitcher position and three deep at the catcher position. We have multiple players who can be moved around from numerous

positions. Weaknesses: I am a first-year head coach with very high expectations. What do you think about your conference? With the new structure of the conference I feel we will be better prepared for the postseason. You always have to play tough teams to get better. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? It has to be pitching. We have Kelly Harper back and have added Hannah Hadden, who was

injured, and is back stronger than ever. With those two seniors and my two sophomores, Morgan Crocker and Destiny Bennett, who have been working hard in the off season, I feel we have a great rotation in that key spot. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Being able to rotate my pitchers and keep the hitters guessing and hitting throughout the lineup with no weak spots, so the teams have to pitch to our big hitters.

Missing from photo Olivia DePriest Coach’s name: Joe Marazita (21124-11); Richard Robbins, assistant coach Years coaching sport/at current school: 24th year coaching tennis at Brandywine, 19th as girls head coach Last year’s record/place in conference: 15-0 Lakeland Conference champions (7th title in the past 10 seasons), Division 4 Regional runner-ups and qualified for the state finals Key starters lost: Alli Srmek, Allie Wilson Key returning lettermen: Abbey

Cole, Eishaa Rehman, Shaylee Smith,Emily Erwin, Katie Rose, Krystal Bunch, Rachael Szilagyi, Alyssa Bolen, Hallie Carnes, Olivia Depriest Top newcomers: Hannah Martin, Shelby Fortune, Elizabeth Hartz Strengths: We have a ton of experience returning and quite a few of our players played over the winter, so we should be strong out the gate. We will also be in excellent shape because so many of our players have competed in other sports and been successful. Also, our overall team GPA is very high as we have

two of the three valedictorians on the team (Abbey Cole and Krystal Bunch). Our experience should allow us to apply pressure and force play a little bit more than last year. Weaknesses: Even though we returned most of our team, I have mixed up the positions to give us a little more depth. I hope it works out for the better. What do you think about your conference? We have more schools in the BCS Athletic Conference, so it will be interesting to see where we end up. We all start 0-0 so there is no favorite.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? The team’s work ethic and chemistry have been surprisingly good considering we have not been able to practice outdoors much. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top?To be able to practice outdoors, avoid injuries, and get most of our matches in so the team can develop to its potential. I just expect the team to give 100 percent effort all the time, as you cannot take the elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.

Marty Ward, throws; Andrew Boocher, high jump Girls — Emily Pedzinski, Makena Bowen, Brianna Gleason Strengths: Our strengths are returning lettermen and their leadership, the teamwork, the kids who are willing to fill in wherever they can help, the hard work they are willing to put in and the team camaraderie. Weaknesses: Our weaknesses are the unknowns. We have several young men we are looking at to step up and compete in various events and if they do we will have success. What do you think about your conference? Our conference will be interesting since it is all new. Bridgman will have several athletes back,

Buchanan always has great potential and Mendon has had outstanding teams in the past. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Some of our younger kids look like they are showing great potential. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? How well we improve throughout the year will be important. As the kids get in better track shape, hopefully we will be able to find out where we can fill kids in to make us stronger as a team and will be able to peak at the right time. Girls — Emily Pedzinski has put a lot of time in since last season competing during the indoor season as well as working on the track all summer.

Also, our work ethic and mental toughness. Weaknesses: Youth and defense since we are replacing three starters on defense. We are

looking for some young players to step up and get us some solid minutes off the bench. What do you think about your conference? Very strong conference with a lot of teams this year. Should be exciting and looking forward to the challenge. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Sacrifice and working harder than the other team.

Coach’s name: Amelio Rodriguez Years coaching sport/at current school: Second year Last year’s record/place in conference: Last place in Lakeland Conference Key starters lost: Blake Herwick (regional qualifier) Key returning lettermen: Derek Wismer (senior); Ty Lorance and Lucas Bonek (juniors) Top newcomers: Evan Hernandez and Chase Hanson (freshman) Strengths: Varsity experience. We return all but one player from last season and we have a lot of kids in the program. Weaknesses: We are very young. We have one senior, three juniors and a lot of sophomores and freshmen. What do you think about your conference? This is the first season for the BCS Athletic Conference, so New Buffalo and LMC will be new opponents for us, but Bridgman and Brandywine will both be returning allconference players from last season making them a challenge. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Leadership. I have noticed a couple of my upper classmen taking some of the new guys under their wings and helping them learn the game. Attitudes have been upbeat and kids are excited for the season. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will need all of the returning players to improve their scores a few strokes each, be more consistent than last year, and get some help from some of the new players. If we can be more consistent, then we should be able to compete in our half of the conference.

Coach’s name: Kate Coules — I was Brian Pruett’s assistant coach last year and due to him accepting the assistant principal role at Buchanan High School, I have taken over girls varsity soccer this year. I have big shoes to fill and hope to make him and the program he built proud. Years coaching sport/at current school: This is my second year coaching at Buchanan High School. Last year’s record/place in conference: Last year we won our conference, which was a first for Buchanan girls soccer. Key starters lost: Our key starters this year will be our extremely large group of seniors. These girls have been playing together for close to five

tennis

years now and have great chemistry on the field. It is great fun to watch. Key returning lettermen: Similar to my previous answer, these seniors played together last year on varsity and the majority of them were starters. Top newcomers: Nice big group of freshmen coming in, which I’m looking forward to building the program with. Strengths: Again, great chemistry of just knowing each other’s movements on the field. Weaknesses: Communication What do you think about your conference? Our conference has grown this year and the new additions will add to the great competition this conference has.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? I have been very surprised by the amount of dedication and drive a large amount of these girls have. They are extremely excited for the season to begin. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? One thing I am a big believer of is team bonding. I will be working a lot with team dinners, weekend tournaments and scrimmages, as well as team bonding nights. Understanding to still support each other even if the performance on the field wasn’t perfect; then being able to build each other back up to strive for perfection, I believe is the true meaning of being a team.

Coach’s name: Erin Kratky Years coaching sport/ at current school: This will be my fourth year as varsity coach, but my fifth year coaching. Key starters lost: Spati Dube, Ashlynn Young, Dara Molica Key returning lettermen: Taylor Anthony; Heather Miller; Keiran Baginske Top newcomers: Mya Curran, Peyton Ritchie, Sarah Bianchi, Sydney Hildebrandt Strengths: Our team has some excellent leaders this year. They are driven to do better and excited to be on the court. Weaknesses: We have a lot of newcomers to the sport, but they have a lot of potential and I am The Buchanan girls tennis team consists of Taylor Anthony. The team is coached by Ryan Mohney and Dan Rodts. Some players from the final roster may be missing from the photograph. Coach’s name: Ryan Mohney — Sprint Coach; Danny Rodts — Distance Coach Years coaching sport/at current school: Mohney — 10 years as head coach (12 years working with the program); Rodts — Second year Key starters lost: We had a great group of senior leaders that we lost last year. They have been the heart and soul of this track team for the past four years. Jack Ruggless, Spencer Thompson, Tim Lindamood, Dylan Williamson and Solomon Remmo. It has been hard to replace them and finding the leaders to fill their shoes has been tough. Key returning lettermen: Brooke

Wesner (Soph.) — placed in most pole vault competitions last year. Brandon Jerue (Jr.) — sprinter — one of our fastest athletes on the team last year. He will need to carry our sprint team this year. Top newcomers: Alexander Tobler (Soph.) — has a lot of ability and drive. Strengths: The athletes that make it to practice every day work extremely hard. They have a positive attitude and never complain about a workout. They also know that they have to pick up the extra points where our numbers won’t. Weaknesses: Our numbers are down a little again this year. It is hard to win track meets with such

a small team. Our girls team is growing but will most likely forfeit several of the relays due to the lack in runners. It is very difficult trying to recruit athletes anymore due to the number of spring sports. Male athletes are not coming out like they use to. Golf and baseball have good numbers this year, but the weight room is seeing more athletes in it than the past few years. Athletes are working out more and just not doing anything instead of participating in our schools athletics. It has been a rough start so far due to weather as well but all the schools are dealing with this dilemma so we shouldn’t be too far behind.

What do you think about your conference? Not sure what the new conference is or what the competition standards are. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? The attitudes are very good this year. Athletes are coming to practice and working harder than ever, and if practices are adjusted to push them a little more, they go with the flow and keep pushing through. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Track is a numbers game. We need parents and other athletic departments to encourage athletes to continue to be two- and threeseason athletes.

Coach’s name: Bob Turner Years coaching sport/at current school: This is my second year coaching golf at DUHS Last year’s record/place in conference: 38-7. We won the West Division of the conference and finished fifth overall in the conference after the league tournaments. Key starters lost: Christian Hess and Andrew Wild Key returning lettermen: Jordan Hageman; Jeremiah Guernsey and David Brogan Top newcomers: Zach Davis; Josh Lamphere; Mitch Warsko; Justin Yakim Strengths: We have some depth — seven guys with varsity experience (three played in the conference, district and regionals) and five or six JV guys Weaknesses: We have to figure out who the solid fourth and fifth guys are and whether the top three guys can hold their spots. What do you think about your conference? Conference is tough to say. We are not seeing Three Rivers in the West this year and in their place is Paw Paw. Edwardsburg will be good on the west side and I know Otsego is one of the top on the east side. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Work ethic. We need to continue to push ourselves to get better. We can’t worry Pictured here are the members of the Dowagiac golf team. Coach’s name: Ryan Haines (6-30) Years coaching sport/at current school: Six years coaching soccer at the high school, club/travel and PDL level. Second year coaching Dowagiac Union High School. Last year’s record/place in conference: Overall Record: 2-17; Wolverine West Conference: fourth place; Wolverine Conference Overall: eighth place Key starters lost: Christina Preston and Sarah Long Key returning lettermen: Seniors: Drew Andrade and Ana Manzano; Juniors: Mara Nelson, Cali Rank, and Anne Zebell; Sophomores: Logan McMeeken, Katie Hurrle, and McKenzie Hassle. Top newcomers: Freshmen: Anayda Lucio, Daniela Morales, and Dustie Green. Strengths: The main strength this year will be our returning juniors and seniors. These girls are the

foundation that will continue to improve our program through leadership, dedication, and hard work. They have all bought into the “Chieftain Framework” that I have instilled (academics, development, and teamwork), and have been excellent examples of the “student athlete” that I want from our players. Weaknesses: Last year we lost our field general in Christina Preston. She understood the game so well which has led her to play collegiate soccer at LMC. It is time for someone new to step into her shoes. Also much like last year we are still a young team with only eight upperclassmen. However, it makes the future of our program brighter. What do you think about your conference? I think overall the Wolverine Conference will be as tough as it has been in years past. In the West Division we will be able to compete better than last year against the stronger teams like Edwardsburg, Paw Paw and

South Haven. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Within the first full week I noticed the team is more cohesive than last year. This is my second year as the head coach of the Dowagiac girls soccer program, so most of the girls already know what is expected of them and have carried that knowledge on to the new players and freshmen. I have and will continue to stress teamwork at every practice and game. Our motto this year is “Row the Boat,” which means that we are all on the focused and one misstep can guide us of course. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? This year is all about the continuing development of our program. All practices and games are learning lessons that will continue to make us a better team overall in the future.

Weaknesses: Need to find a second baseman to replace four-year starter Amanda Craft and need to find a catcher to replace threeyear starter Kourtney Mitchell. What do you think about your conference? The Wolverine West is tough. Paw Paw won our district last year. Coloma went to the Final Four last year. Edwardsburg won 30 games last year. It will be very competitive. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Everyone is working hard and encouraging each other. Some players are stepping up to fill some positions that are open. Weaknesses: Very young team with the attitude that there is no way to go but up. What do you think about your conference? Tough conference tennis wise. Small squads versus the large enrollment of our competitors. Distance and travel make it very difficult to compete with all conference teams. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? To sound cliché …”they are ready, willing and able.” What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? What do you think about your conference? We’re going to be in an extremely competitive conference this year. Looking forward to the competition. What has surprised you about your team? What do you think about your conference? Our conference is a balanced conference. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Our team hitting has been a pleasant surprise so far. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will be successful this season if we keep people off balance at the plate and play great, consistent defense behind our pitching.

Top newcomers: Makenna Tinkham, Jamie Roths Strengths: Overall athleticism should be improved from previous years. I think our defense should be an area of strength coming into the season. We return four players from the fivegirl rotation in the back and have two young girls ready to contribute. I also have 14 returning letter winners and 12 who have played major minutes. Weaknesses: We will be untested in the goal this year. I don’t have any girls with varsity experience in the net. Patience will also be a big test for us. Last year, we started games well, then didn’t score, lost patience and forced

the issue to try and score. It never worked out or ended well. What do you think about your conference? I think our conference will be improved from last year. Paw Paw joins the West and are a very good team. Most teams on our side return many good players and another year of growth, so our side should be much improved and competitive. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? We are healthy for now. I have two girls coming off ACL tears, one girl from a broken leg, and one more who missed time with a broken arm. All are on track to contribute this season and

I hope will be back to form soon. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We will need someone to step up as the heart of the team. Someone who will lead with her voice, as well as play, and outwork everyone every day. My most successful years have included a player like this and seems to spark the girls to achieve more. We will also need a little bit of luck with the injury bug. We have had six season ending injuries to starters the past two seasons. This leads to a lot of time for underclassmen, but a lot of lost time for improvement from starters.

half season is going to hurt us. Lost 14 home runs from last year, so power could be a weakness as is youth and inexperience. What do you think about your conference? Lakeshore (state champs last year), Portage Central and Mattawan are always perennial powers. St. Joe is usually solid and has a really solid pitcher so they could be tough. Don’t know much about Gull Lake. Our conference is tough. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you?

Outfield, was a big question mark. I have seen tremendous improvement in this area and I think may be one of our strengths as well. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We are focusing a lot on team chemistry, accountability and working hard. Pitching has been a focus from day one and will continue to be. We have three pitchers getting lessons and have been working really hard. If they continue to progress, we could be a lot better than expected.

Coach’s name: Jo Schau Years coaching sport/at current school: 8 years Last year’s record/place in conference: 7-10-2 Key starters lost: Graduated nine seniors — Alexis Arnold, Maggie Hoff, Abigail Gaines, Sasha Zidar; Heaven Dokey, Haley Akey, Chelsea Best, Emily Gaines, Jaycee Myer Top newcomers: Alexis Smith, Dayleigh Miller Strengths: Aggressive Weaknesses: Young, inexperienced to the varsity level of play What do you think about your conference? We have a very tough conference. We are one of the few teams that do not have over a handful of travel soccer players who play year-round, which makes it tough to compete when the commitment to the game of soccer is only a few months out of the year. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised? Desire to learn the sport of soccer and commitment to compete. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? Find a rhythm with working together with each other and rebuilding the core of the soccer team.

Weaknesses: We are young in the amount of years they have been playing tennis. What do you think about your conference? This is a strong conference. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Their desire to learn and improve. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We need a lot of playing time. Struggling to find that with the weather, but the sun will shine eventually.

Coach’s name: Mike Vota (305-202-3) Years coaching sport/at current school: Entering 17th season Last year’s record/place in conference: 24-12. Finished third in SMAC West Division Key starters lost: Connor Glick; Tate Brawley; Taylor Weldy; Tate Rudlaff; Tyler Clutter Key returning lettermen: Jordan Ham; Jason Hoida; Alex Hardy; Bryce Lake; Wyatt Thornton; Cody Thornton Strengths: Pitching depth, very experienced infield, overall team speed and athleticism Weaknesses: No true No. 1 pitcher, lack of power in the line up. What do you think about your conference? Our conference is very tough. Portage Northern, Portage Central, Gull Lake should be the front runners with St. Joe, Lakeshore and us in the second tier. What intangibles will be needed to push your team over the top? We need to develop through the year. Many need to log some innings at the varsity level and become acclimated to varsity. We must stay healthy with a real lack of depth at some positions.

Pictured here are the members of the Niles baseball team. In front from left: Cody Glick, Fred Kemp, Jordan Ham, Austin Lintz, Alex Hardy, Bryce Lake, Drew Huffman; Back row: Cody Thornton, Jason Hoida, Chris Frantz, Jacob Hamm, Wyatt Thornton, Jake Huffman, Johnny Morrison.
