SEASON SCHEDULE What is your can’t-miss game this winter? We play 10 games against Class B schools. For us it is the Bridgman and Buchanan games. All the teams in our conference are tough, but those two — the Bees and the Bucks — our kids circle those games. Who are some of the top players in your conference? Dalton Riddle — Buchanan; Julian Sheriff and Ryan Chang — Bridgman. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Just to play as a team and fight together one game at a time. Enjoy the moment. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? They do not like to lose, so they always bring the hard work after losses. When we win we act like we have been there before.

quarter. The plan is nonstop pressure and playing very fast.

Years coaching sport/at current school: Eighth year

Weaknesses: Experience and height. We lost our top seven scorers to graduation from last year’s final four team. Throw in two sophomores and three freshmen in the top rotation and we will be learning on the fly. We also have no girls over 5-foot-8.

Last year’s record/place in conference: 243; first place BCS Red Division Key starters lost: Jaleesa Garner, Makena Hartline, Michaela Hartline, Emily Erwin, Alyssa Bolen. The first four mentioned were all-state players. Key returning lettermen: Makenna Bowen, Mia Stella, Cassie Luczkowski, Chelsie Luczkowski Top newcomers: Nicole Sachman, 10th; Zakiyyah Abdullah, ninth; Kennedy Byrd, ninth; Megan Schmidt, ninth; Madison Bailey, 10th Strengths: We should be able to play at a fast tempo and rotate 10 girls through each

What is your can’t-miss game this winter? Every game is important. Who are some of the top players in your conference? Brooke Wesner and Jayla Bibbs (Buchanan); multiple girls from Comstock and several athletic players from Berrien Springs. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? This year we are focusing on the process. We will worry about results when the time comes. That seemed to work

out well for the Chicago Cubs as it was their philosophy throughout the season. We will approach each day and game with the mindset of working hard to do our best while having a lot of fun along the way. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? It will be interesting to see. We have so many young, new players that we aren’t sure how they will react to the highs and lows of a varsity basketball season. At the end of the day it is the coach’s job to make sure the team is prepared, competing at the best of their ability and if that happens the results will take care of themselves. We are very excited about the season and as a coach I look forward to watching this young team grow throughout the year. They are sponges right now and getting better each and every day. The progress will be fun to watch and track from what we look like in November to how this group will look heading into March Madness. THE TIPOFF • 9

the conference. We should be able to fill an entire lineup this year, where in the past couple of years we would have to wait for some to make a weight class or for a late recruit to come out so we could fill the void.

(White Pigeon 2016 All-Stater); Sam Burge (Brandywine 2016 state qualifier); Adam Eger (Buchanan 2016 state qualifier); Nathan Caudill; Chase Gibson; Cole Houtz and David Erwin (Bronson; all of them 2016 state qualifiers).

Weaknesses: We do not have a whole lot of numbers this year to avoid injury or next guy up. We have to be able to maintain our weight as well as stay healthy in order to be competitive.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Just go out there and don’t be scared. We have 10 weeks how to figure out Decatur (ranked third in Division 4) as they are the obvious favorites to win our regional, and they should be because they have a lot of excellent wrestlers back this season. With all due respect to the teams in our district we should come out ready to lay the hammer down for our 11th straight district title based on who we have coming back compared to our opposition. In the conference we would like to finish in the top three. Individually we want to get as many to regionals and state as possible. So many of them have wrestled during the offseason by going to camps and such so it will be interesting to see how much they have improved.

What is your can’t-miss game this winter? Our individual district in Cassopolis is by far one of the most difficult districts in the entire state. On top of that we for sure have the most difficult regional in Bronson the following week so we will really have to earn our way to the Palace as individuals. Teamwise we always have a good dual with Buchanan and we shall see how we match up with Bronson. Who are some of the top players in your conference? Nik Andeverde (Mendon two-time state qualifier); Wyatt Cool (Mendon 2016 All-Stater); Kyle Black

Top newcomers: Ben Hack, Josh Wilson, Trae Dixon, Ashley Hernadez, Sage Nemeth, Morgan Crocker Strengths: We have more experienced bowlers than new ones.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? We encourage bowlers to try to reach their average or better this year.

Key starters lost: Michael Okayama, Wyatt Eager, Justin Williamson, Kori Bunch, Makayla Dierickx

Weaknesses: We have new bowlers that have never bowled.   What is your can’t-miss game this winter? Brandywine vs. Niles is always a good match-up.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I think we’ve taught them to enjoy the moment and then move on to the task at hand whether it was a win or a loss.

Key returning lettermen: Derek Lloyd, Austin Carter, Dustin Ward, Destiny Bennett, Rebecca Collins, Kiya Lintz, Moddi Frazier

Who are some of the top players in your conference? Tori Sarratore (Niles); Ronnie Harner (Niles); Dru Brown (Niles)

What has the team improved on most during the offseason? Actually being a team. Everyone seems to get along better.

walk onto the court, be it practice or game. I think if our kids do this we will do a great job representing the Buchanan basketball program. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? We attempt to do everything we can to put our kids in adverse situations every day at practice. We want them to respond to adversity in the same way they respond to success. Winning is great, but working hard and playing strong both physically and mentally is what will lead to long-term success. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I think many of our kids have really worked to improve their attitudes. Last season was full of many highs and lows and we often were left dealing with nonbasketball related issues. It seems that this group has grown up and that they are ready to have a great season, regardless of the cost or the commitment.

What is your can’t-miss game this winter? I would still say the conference goes through Brandywine until someone beats them. the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? This season the team goals we have set as individuals and as a team are: 1) As a team and individual we will strive to be better today than we were yesterday. 2) To have fun and play for one another. 3) To represent our community in a positive manner. 4) To be role models for future Lady Bucks. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? The highs and lows of winning and losing can be challenging for young athletes to process. The goal of the coaching staff is for our players to take each opportunity (win or lose) and look at is a chance to learn something about themselves or the team, and then turn that lesson into a positive or something to build on. Losers tend to quit when they fail. Winners learn from their failure and grow from it. With such a long season, it is these challenges that build the character needed to be champions on the court, and later in life off the court. THE TIPOFF • 15

What is your can’t-miss game this winter? Our home tournament. Who are some of the top players in your conference? Bronson and Brandywine. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Our team goal this year is to get better as a whole for the kids, along with the parents, to buy into the system by putting the effort forward to be

successful, to do more than just what is required. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I think my players do well with both. Granted I can’t expect them not to let the loss affect them because you learn from your losses, so I want them to think about it, yet not dwell. I coach this by teaching them you win the same way you lose. You show your competitor the utmost respect in victory or defeat. I coach it by embracing adversity. We put that into practice with drills and conditioning. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? The returners have found the weight room.

COACH REPORTS Coach: Jesse Becraft and Brian Bird (0-0) (co-head coaches)

Top newcomers: Noah Tinkham, Jacob Reece

Years coaching sport/at current school: Becraft has been an assistant coach six years at Edwardsburg prior to this year; Bird was assistant coach for one year prior to this year.

Strengths: We have a pretty experienced team with a lot of guys who have seen meaningful mat time in their careers to pair with some young guys who will be inserted into the lineup that have a lot of matches to draw experience from.

Last year’s record/place in conference: 7-2, third place in Wolverine Conference Key starters lost: Hunter Vargo (sixthplace at state); Michael Higley (4-time state placer); Blake Parsons (state qualifier); Lucas Marks, Bo Thomas Key returning lettermen: Joey Hess (state qualifier); Austin Cline; Nick Bradley; Jacob Andrina; Josh Harris; Josh McMann

Weaknesses: I would say a weakness is our depth. What is your can’t-miss game this winter? We do not have many home meets this winter, but the two nights that I would think would be the ones that will be the most exciting are Dec. 14 against Dowagiac and then team districts when we host Niles/Lakeshore/St Joe. Who are some of the top players in your

conference? There are a lot of top players in the conference but as a team I would say Allegan is the team to beat. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? A couple of goals we have for the team other than what is listed above are to always be the most aggressive team when we are on the mat and to never let anybody be in better condition than us. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Our wrestlers usually stay pretty even keeled and handle winning/losing like they should. We coach that by instilling that one match does not make a season and to always keep their end goal in their sights. THE TIPOFF • 33

Strengths: I would have to say without a doubt our strengths this year will be our stunting and tumbling. Weaknesses: We have a lot of new athletes to this program. However I don’t anticipate that being a weakness — more or less a strong learning curve. What is your can’t miss game this winter? We are hosting the Wolverine Conference championship on Feb. 1 this year at Edwardsburg. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? It is always a goal to perfect our showmanship on the floor along with tumbling and stunting. This year we have already reached so many of our goals we have to keep setting new ones. We are hoping to score above and beyond what we have ever scored before

and I know we can do it this year because of all of the athletes’ willingness to work hard every day and never give up. It is amazing to me to see this group of girls reaching goals that they have set for the team every day at practice, that we have to keep setting new ones. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I would say without a doubt there is always something to reach for. As far as highs and lows throughout the season of winning and losing as long as they have given it everything they have on the mat that is all I ask of them. They know that if they mess up in a round they have two other rounds to make that mistake up. Every one of my athletes understands that this is not an individual sport and it is team based sport. Even if a girl is not in a round those girls cheer them on because a win is a win, no matter who is on the mat.
