For the inaugural edition of the Tipoff, Leader Publications featured two players from each of the schools in our coverage area. Standout athletes from the Brandywine, Buchanan, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg and Niles girls and boys basketball teams were featured on individual covers. Newspaper subscribers and single-copy vendors received the cover based on the school district where they are located. THE LINEUP

COACH REPORTS Coach: Nathan Knapp | Years coaching sport: 11

Weaknesses: Extra passes. We are a very unselfish team.

Last year’s record: 13-7

What do you think about your conference? It’s bigger than four teams, so it’s definitely better.

Place in conference: Third place in BCS Key starters lost: Andrew Duckett, Zach Schmidt, Andrew Boocher, Matt Vaughn Key returning lettermen: Austin Knapp, Marquise Davis, Cole Searles, Hunter Slaughter, Vinny Peel, Zach Grishaber Top newcomers: Chandler Plew, Scott Miller, Brady Duvall, Dalton Knapp, Nathan Heche, Antonio Moffitt, Nathan Kemp, Jaden Croom, Toby Latislaw Strengths: We can score inside or out. We are very quick and we have a deep bench.

8 • THE TIPOFF

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? The ability to talk and get after it defensively. Great help-side defense. What goals have you set? We want a winning season and to try to win more games than last year. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Our kids are tough and hate losing, so it’s easy to coach because they always want to get better. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? We need to handle adversity when it comes.

COACH REPORTS

Coach: Josh Hood | Years coaching sport at school: 7 Career record:138-10 at Brandywine; 263-69 overall Last year’s record/place in conference: 23-2; BCS Athletic Conference, district, regional champions Key starters lost: Brooke Smith Key returning lettermen: Makenna Hartline, Michaela Hartline, Emily Erwin, Jaleesa Garner, Makenna Bowen, Rachel Szilagyi Strengths: Experience with eight of nine varsity letter winners back from last year’s 23-2 quarterfinal team. Depth is another strength of this team as we will rotate all 12 players in throughout. Team speed and players who can play multiple positions will also be a strength. Lastly, the ability to shoot the three-pointer from all 12 girls will be a strength of the team.

Mishawaka Marian @ Berrien Springs @ So. Bend Adams Parchment @ Comstock @ South Bend Riley Buchanan New Buffalo @ Bridgman Berrien Springs Lakeshore St. Joseph @ Parchment Decatur

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Commitment and work ethic this off-season and pre-season has been as good as we have ever had since I’ve been at Brandywine. Instead of being complacent and living off last year’s success the girls have worked extremely hard to set themselves up for a successful season. What goals have you set? We always pride ourselves at never getting out-worked and leaving it all on the court. Other goals include working together as a team and taking pride in everything we do as a representative of the Brandywine Lady Cats program.

Weaknesses: Size will be a concern with no girl taller than 5-foot-10

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? We have set our schedule up to face much adversity this season. With 15 of 20 games versus Class A or B schools, we have no time to get complacent in our work ethic or desire to improve every day. We also want the girls to enjoy the ride so we always celebrate wins, have team dinners throughout the season, and do anything we can to build team unity and create memories and life lessons that the girls will take with them when they graduate.

What do you think about your conference? Our conference is loaded with all-state players on multiple teams plus having four schools that are Class B. Each night in the league should be competitive and the conference champ could end up with multiple losses considering the parity across the board.

What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? We need to avoid injuries and continue to work hard every day. The rest of the process of a high school basketball season will take care of itself. At the end of the day, if the team gives their best effort and has fun together along the way, that’s all you can ask for as the head coach.

Top newcomers: Searra Inman, Devon Powell, Peyton Pruitt Strengths: We have six wrestlers on this team who have qualified for the regional tournament in their high school careers. All of them are upper classmen and put in the time to try and improve upon what they did last season individually. Their presence and work ethic feeds a vibe to some of the more inexperienced wrestlers. Weaknesses: We have about seven or so wrestlers hanging around 140 to 145 that are all capable of starting in the line-up. It puts us at a disadvantage to be competitive if some of those kids aren’t in the varsity line-up. What do you think about your conference? It’s

10 • THE TIPOFF

decent and with the addition to Berrien Springs, Comstock and Parchment from the Wolverine to the BCS it brings more talent to an otherwise fairly competitive conference. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? How eager they are about getting on the mat to compete. Several of them aren’t stressing about their weight right now and neither are we as a coaching staff. They seem to have their diets and plans under control to where hopefully they can compete at their scratch weight starting Dec. 9. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Every wrestler reacts differently and us as coaches get to know these kids very well during practice to where we can figure out where their heads are after a hard-fought match. There is nothing more rewarding then busting your butt all week to make weight and beat up your opponent on the mat. On the other hand there is nothing more devastating then busting your butt all week to make weight and lose. With this sport, winning and losing is so personal it really doesn’t compare to others. The kids know it’s up to them on how bad they want to win for themselves as well as the team but also they aren’t on an island isolated like it seems when you’re on the mat. We always have to be supportive and encouraging after every match and take those lessons of constructive criticism back to the practice room to improve.

BOBCAT BOWLING

COACH REPORTS Coach: Pepper Carter Years coaching: Second year Last year’s record/place in conference: Girls: 7-3; second place, qualified for state Boys: 9-1; second place, third at state Key starters lost: Girls: Jessica Stover, Holley Martyniuk, Skye Critchlow Boys: Jakob Szlagyi, Dominic Stella, Blake Lerner Key returning lettermen: Girls: Kori Bunch, Makayla Dierckx, Destiny Bennett, Rebecca Collins Boys: Michael Okayama, Matt Probst, Derek Lloyd, Wyatt Eager Top newcomers: Girls: Taylor Bass, Modalea Frazer Boys: Dustin Ward, Austin Carter, Justin Williamson, Alek Horvath

In front from left are: Wyatt Eager, Derek Lloyd, Dustin Ward; back row: Michael Okayama, Alek Horvath, Justin Williamson, Matt Probst and Austin Carter.

Strengths: We have kids who have been to state and know how to work to get there. Weaknesses: Most of the new kids have never bowled, so coaching new kids will be a challenge. What goals do you have? Stay positive, keep focused and improve our team average. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I believe my bowlers handle the highs well. What team doesn’t? For the lows we remind them what they did well and how to improve on what they didn’t do well.

COACH REPORTS Coach: Reid McBeth | Years coaching sport: 15 Last year’s record: 13-9 / Second place BCS Place in conference: Third place in BCS Key starters lost: Tyler Flynn, Christian Catalano, Eli Lewis, Dustin Grey Key returning lettermen: Tim McCaffrey, Josiah Smith, Jarrett Thomas, Dalton Riddle Top newcomers: Dante Phillips, Rae Griffin, Christian Hall, Kyle Leazenby, Andrew McGuirt, Chad Adkerson, Ahmad Thompson Strengths: We have a hard-working group with several exceptional shooters. The bigs we have are aggressive and will help us on the boards. Weaknesses: We lack a ton of varsity game experience

and we also are on the small side. It will take huge efforts from our undersized players if we want to compete on the boards. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? We have good team speed and we have nice shooters that are able to stretch the floor. I think we have the ability to be pretty good if we continue to play unselfish basketball. What goals have you set? We do not want to base the success of a game or a season on wins and loses. We will focus on playing to the best of our ability each time we take the floor as a team. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Obviously in the course of a season you have rivals who you want to play well against. Our goal is to bring our “A” game to every game we play and that starts with bringing a positive attitude and a great work ethic.

COACH REPORTS

Coach: Gabe Miller | Career record: 31-12 Years coaching: Third year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 19-4, second place BCS Conference Key starters lost: Selica Jones, Chelsey Bennett Key returning lettermen: Jade Mosier, Brooke Wesner, Ali Kyles, Myeshia Mayo, Jayla Bibbs, Nikki Mucha Top newcomers: Morgan Zelmer, Allie Stephensen, Brooklyn Krumrie, Lyndsey Haroff Strengths: We feel our experience this year is an asset and something we can count on in tight games that we may not have had in years past. On defense, I feel we will be a strong rebounding team who is aggressive and opportunistic. On offense, this year we feel we have the skilled players to score in transition, or space the court in the half-court offense and score points from a variety of areas. Weaknesses: We lack size and varsity experience off the bench. What do you think about your conference? This is my third year, and my third different conference. Each year the challenge is greater. I feel this season it will be a very competitive league with some high quality, competitive basketball being played each night. Obviously Brandywine returning seven of their top eight players is the team to beat. When you combine their experience, athleticism and ability to score in bunches off transition and the three-point shot it makes

for quite the challenge. Additionally, both Parchment and Comstock are two well-coached programs that will be great additions to improving the quality of play in the league. Parchment knocked off Benton Harbor two years ago in the Class B regional final and has an all-state guard from that team returning for her senior year. Comstock has their own all-state sophomore guard and showed great improvement last year as a team. Bridgman is well coached, and has the size that very few teams can match up with. Every night we will need to be focused and prepared to play in order for us to challenge for a league championship. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? I have been impressed with the potential and focus we have shown in practice. Additionally, we graduated our two captains last year, but the leadership I thought we would miss is coming from a variety of areas. What goals have you set? Like all teams, we want to improve and give our best effort every night. However, ultimately we want to continue to not only mold great basketball players that make our community proud, but mold great students and citizens of our community who represent the name on the front of the jersey with class and pride. Then, as the athletes move on, they take the value of the life skills (work ethic, listening, dealing with adversity) they gained playing for the program and apply them successfully to their future endeavors. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? We will need to continue to improve our focus in practice and make sure we are ready to accept the challenge of the season ahead of us. Our practice habits need to line up with our goals.

COACH REPORTS Coach: Frank Mucha | Career record: 574-270-3

Top newcomers: Jay Strozewski, Al Ferguson

Years coaching: 36 years as head coach, four as assistant

Strengths: We have a veteran core of experienced wrestlers returning.

Last year’s record/place in conference: 24-7, fourth place BCS Conference

Weaknesses: It is very difficult to fill all 14 weight classes with experienced wrestlers.

Key starters lost: Eddie Washington, Colin Wheetley

What do you think about your conference? Bronson looks to be the top team.

Key returning lettermen: Trevor Kline, Caleb Kline, Matt Strozewski, Adam Eger, Jacob Graham, River Fox, Wes Springer-Grounds, Max Carrigan

What goals have you set? Our goal is to be at the top of our game when we get to February. THE TIPOFF • 15

COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING COACH REPORTS Coach: Shannon Blackwell Years coaching: Third year Last year’s record/place in conference: Fourth place, eighth place at districts Key starters lost: Gabriella Copeland Key returning lettermen: Karissa Kennedy, Tyra Longcrier, Jessica Lee, Gabi Borst, Rebecca Tabor and Hailey Maust

What do you think about your conference? I’m happy with the conference lineup this year. I think it’s an even playing field and every team has the opportunity to be in that top spot. We are always excited to see Berrien Springs and LMC at meets. They are what we call our “sister teams.” We encourage and cheer one another on, which helps each team perform. So my team and I couldn’t be happier.

Strengths: Stunting, precision of motions and vocals.

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? Their drive. This is by far the most driven and determined set of athletes that I have coached. They come into practice every day ready to perform and they give it their all. As a coach, it’s refreshing to see and that give me more motivation.

Weaknesses: Confidence. We have quite a few newcomers and they aren’t used to performing on a mat and having to use their voices while jumping and doing motions. This is something that is typical for the beginning of the season, but give them time. Once they perform at their first competition then confidence just comes along with the territory.

What goals have you set? Other than winning, we really focus on self-improvement. We come up with a game plan that they can see an ending result and we focus on it while also coming together as a team. It’s encouraging to know that we support each other and that we are their family outside of home.

Top newcomers: Alexis Heller, Brenna Ropp

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? It starts with me. I have to make sure that I portray a manner that I would want my athletes to model after. I make sure that I’m the same coach if we come in first or last. We don’t focus on the negatives, but we will go over them and correct what we did wrong. I try to focus on the positives and I feel that if I set that example for them, then they are going to model what I do. So I maintain my sportsmanship so my team will conduct themselves in the same manner, no matter what the placing is. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? Support. I am their biggest cheerleader, but I’m only one person. So we need the support from the parents, students, school staff and community. It’s hard when we have other schools that are just as big as us and their cheering section is so loud and then ours is like crickets. We have some dedicated parents and they do their best, and I love and appreciate them, but we definitely need more support.

Editor’s note: The Buchanan competitive cheerleading squad was unavailable to be photographed prior to press date.

COACH REPORTS Coach: Kenyon R. Ellison Years coaching: First year Last year’s record/place in conference: Fourth place, eighth place at districts Strengths: Our strength will be in experience with a great group of seniors leading the pack this season. Conditioning will also be a strength for us this year. Weaknesses: Our weaknesses will come in the large number of freshmen we will have. It will take some time to break those guys in to the varsity wrestling lifestyle, but once they are there, they will be a great fit. What do you think about your conference? As a first-year head coach this will be my first experience in this conference. Coming from Niles wrestling and then eventually coaching under Todd Hesson, the Big 16 is really all I know. But I am looking forward to what this conference has to bring to the table. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? I’ve seen great senior

leadership. They are eager to lend a hand in any way they can. Also our freshman class is eager to learn. They are always asking questions for clarification in technique; from a coaching standpoint that is what you love from your athletes. What goals have you set? A team goal I have set for this year is to strive in the classroom as well as on the mat. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I think they will handle the highs and lows of winning and losing with the same attitude as they would if it were not a competitive sport. I have stressed to them that you win like you won before; and you lose like you have as well. I told them it is OK to be upset; but they will not embarrass our school, our team, or I as their coach. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. You have to know what it is like to lose to ever be a great champion. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? One intangible that will be needed is that everyone makes weight and is eligible. That will absolutely be crucial to our success.

32 • THE TIPOFF

What goals have you set? Stay healthy and build confidence, character and work ethic into these young men. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Every athlete is different. Your coaching style needs to be consistent and positive. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? Health, mental toughness and a desire to push past what they perceive their limits are so they maximize their potential. They are a very talented group if they believe in themselves.

COMPETITIVE CHEER

COACH REPORTS Coach: Heather L. Hartley

are working very hard at perfecting what we have.

Years coaching: 10 years total, six years of competitive

What do you think about your conference? I love our conference in the fact that everyone has a positive attitude and are always willing to help if needed.

Last year’s record/place in conference: One firstplace, six second-place wins; second in Wolverine West Division Key starters lost: We lost 11 very talented seniors last year. Key returning lettermen: Brittany Bowman, Joelle Eaves, Kalli Mead, Jenna Merrill, Samiyya Scheretie, Cassie Harrison, Hannah Nusbaum, Mallory Sager, Caity Wimberly, Alyssa Pilarski, Kylee Pinkston, Arika Fell Top newcomers: Chelsea Philpot, Abbi Nugent, Lauren Quigg, Courtney Leach, Hannah Philpot, Rayven Jarvis, Kaylin Wenger, Valeria Badilla, Courtney Thoren, Elise Karaman Strengths: We work very well together. We all want one thing and the only way to get there is to be encouraging towards one another. There is no way shape or form this is a single sport. It is all in or nothing at all. Weaknesses: I would have to say our weakness is going to be our tumbling, as far as skills go. However, we

What goals have you set? We always set individual goals for each athlete. But as a team it is to score higher than 200 in round 1 and 2 and higher than 300 in round 3. Or in any combination of them to get us to over 700 points overall. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? My team is humble. They know that they are not the top dogs. There is such a drive to constantly do better. Even when they reach their goals, they say, “What next?” They get excited when they see that they have accomplished something, but then it is always, “What next coach? How can we keep pushing ourselves?” They compete first with themselves then with teams. As long as they are accomplishing their goals, that is all I care about. Yes, a trophy is always great, but did you succeed as a team in getting that or was it a given?

In front from left: Samiyya Scheretie, Kaylin Wenger, Arika Fell, Rayven Jarvis, Chelsea Philpotk Second row: Cassie Harrison, Abbi Nugent, Courtney Leach, Brittany Bowman, Joelle Eaves, Elise Karaman, Hannah Philpot; Back row: Jenna Merrill, Hannah Nusbaum, Val Badilla, Caity Wimberley, Lauren Quigg, Alyssa Pilarski, Kylee Pinkston and Mallory Sager, Kalli Mead. Missing from photo: Courtney Thoren, manager Brianna Brabham and manager Brittany Dickson.

What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? Positive mental attitude. Willing to help others and take constructive criticism. This will never be an individual sport. Team will always come first. THE TIPOFF • 33

has one of their better teams and Benton Harbor should be very good. Both Portages are much improved.

Years coaching: 14 years overall/10 at Niles Last year’s record/place in conference: 5-15/last place SMAC West Division Key starters lost: Gabe Stokes, Ray Glen, Also lost seniors Adam Langmeyer, Sammy Rodts, Jalen Alexander, Dontae Murphy Key returning lettermen: Seniors: Gavin Rasler, Tyler Phillips, Derek Brown, Devin Kuemin. Juniors: Jake Hamm, Alex Harpenau Top newcomers: Seniors: Donovan Jennings, Gatlin York; Juniors: Bryce Lake, Austin Curran, Dustin Anders, Dawson Clemens Strengths: Decent size, plenty of experience. Gavin is in his third year on the varsity. Tyler, Derek and Jake had lots of minutes last season. Weaknesses: Ball handling and attention to detail. Shot selection is a work in progress. What do you think about your conference? Lakeshore 36 • THE TIPOFF

What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? The kids are playing hard enough, but not close to smart enough. Guys have shown that they are willing to defend which is wonderful. We have also shown a complete lack of understanding of who should shoot the basketball and when. What goals have you set? A mark around .500 would be a terrific accomplishment for this group. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Kids are resilient. We need them to mostly just play. We are fortunate to have a lot of kids who love basketball. Our job with them in the gym has always been a pleasure. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? Our team needs to execute on the floor on game night. Be where you are supposed to be and do what you are supposed to do. They have a chance to achieve this by listening to their coaches and teammates. Last year’s group proved that listening to people in the crowd doesn’t help anybody.

LADY VIKES

COACH REPORTS Coach: Phil D’Amico | Career record: 14-8 Years coaching: Second year

Last year’s record/place in conference: 14-8; Third place SMAC West Key starters lost: None. Key returning lettermen: Jazmin Brann, Elyse Zimmerman, Maya Brookins, Emily Gaines, Antonia Palmer Top newcomers: Jaycee Myer Strengths: Experience, team speed, good athletic team, tenacious defenders Weaknesses: We need to improve shooting percentage from last year; early season injuries may force newcomers to the lineup. What do you think about your conference? The conference is very tough, very competitive, very athletic. Very well-coached teams, with some very good conference talent. Every game is a grind and there is no team you can overlook. What have you seen from your team so far that has surprised you? We were in better shape and condition

than I anticipated, and how well all the newcomers to the team, six new varsity players, have jelled with the returning players. What goals have you set? There are some teams and games that Niles has not beaten in several years, so getting over the hump will be critical for this team to get to the next level. I think a team goal is consistency and to play well early, remain at a high level of play, and play hard all the way through the end of the season. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Last year was a microcosm of the previous two years. They played well early and then hit a tough stretch in the middle of the season, and then tried to get it back at the end of the season. I think this year we need to coach our team to be more consistent through the season; I need to get more players time early in the season as we can get some rest early, and get more experienced players later in the year. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? We need to shoot better. Last year we struggled offensively and went long stretches in games where we didn’t score much. We had too many turnovers at key moments, which we have to cut down, and we need to find a way to incorporate our newcomers into the team. So team chemistry will be important.

Front from left: Antonia Palmer, Tegan Bays, Elyse Zimmerman, Maya Brookins, Emily Gaines, Taylor Gibson; back: Steve Johnson (assistant coach), Jessica Johnson (JV, assistant varsity coach), Alexis Preston, LaJan Mitchell, Jazmin Brann, Aynsley Myer, Jaycee Myer and head coach Phil D’Amico.

What goals have you set? Improvement throughout the season. Understanding the importance of work ethic and discipline. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Our kids are fairly resilient. They understand the schedule and the need to prepare for the postseason. We try to coach the effort both on the mat and in the wrestling room. We urge them to show up everyday and invest in the program and follow the plan. What intangibles will be needed for you to have a successful season? Solid leadership. We have all new captains who will lead by example. Mental toughness. Duals are won/lost by pins and bonus points. We need to learn to stay off our backs.
