The Ramblers had a bunch of memorable games during their undefeated season. A thorough domination of heavily favored Darlington in the Division 6 state title game was their most complete and most impressive performance. The dramatic comeback against Grantsburg was probably the most exciting. But it was a Week 2 showdown with Stanley-Boyd that set the tone for the entire year. As good as Regis had been in recent seasons, Stanley-Boyd had always been better. The Orioles had handed the Ramblers four of their 10 losses over the previous three seasons. The 2016 season wasn’t supposed to be any different. Stanley-Boyd was picked to win the Cloverbelt. The Ramblers struck early and often to jump out to a 24-7 lead, but the Orioles slowly came back. When Seth Hause found Brandon Herrick for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 30, many Regis fans probably were thinking the same thing: here we go again. But the Ramblers made sure this wasn’t going to be another gut-wrenching loss to Stanley-Boyd. The game’s final drive was a thing of beauty. Noel Ortiz ran for two third-down conversions. A third was converted when Sam Forden outjumped a defender to haul in a 29-yard pass. Alex Rocksvold finished it off with a 3-yard plunge into the end zone on one of the Ramblers’ patented power running plays with 25 seconds left. “We hadn’t beaten them since 2012,” Regis coach Bryant Brenner said. “There were always some great games the last few years, but we always came up on the short end of the stick. So this one feels really, really good.” Brenner also made it clear after the game that that one win wasn’t going to define the season, but in a way it did. The game-winning 67-yard touchdown drive featured the run/ pass balance and the never-quit attitude that came to define the Ramblers all year.

Durand’s run to the state tournament was anything but uneventful. The Panthers’ two sectional wins were both thrillers. The win over Colfax in the sectional semifinals made Durand believe anything was possible. And it showcased just how good of a player Ambree Schlosser was. Colfax was coming off a stunning regional win over Regis. The Vikings’ young squad that had taken its lumps and lost a number of close games finally was coming together, and Colfax built a nine-point second-half lead. Cue Schlosser. The Durand senior, who finished her decorated career with 1,239 points, scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half, including a clutch 3-pointer late. The Panthers came back to take the lead before Colfax tied it with 35 seconds left. There was never any doubt Schlosser was getting the ball on the final possession. She drove to the hoop and, after getting her initial shot blocked, she made a go-ahead layup with 1.8 seconds left. “I told (Schlosser) that great players play big in games like this,” Panthers coach Lionel Jones said. “You have to be able to play against tough competition, and she did that tonight.” But the drama wasn’t quite over. Colfax coach Joe Doucette drew up a play that the Vikings executed perfectly. Kameri Meredith’s baseball pass was on the money to Savannah Henricks at the top of the key on the other end the floor. A double-teamed Henricks went up high to make the catch and quickly tossed it to Alyssa Dachel on the wing, but her wide open 3 at the buzzer rimmed out. Two days later, Cameron also had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Maddy Otto’s shot wouldn’t fall, sending the Panthers to the state tournament.

The two favorites in the Large-Dunn St. Croix Conference met in a pivotal early season showdown. Not surprisingly, both teams threw their ace. Durand sent Josh Biesterveld to the mound. Elk Mound countered with Trey Mohr. The result was a pitchers’ duel. The hard-throwing Mohr was not sharp early. A four-pitch walk to start the game, a stolen base and a bloop single put Durand up 1-0. But Mohr quickly found his stuff. He struck out 11 of the 19 batters he faced the rest of the way and gave up just the first-inning hit. “Usually my offspeed pitches are my backup,” Mohr said. “There were some times tonight that I was so confident in those that I was throwing them at will. When the middle innings rolled around, I was on fire, couldn’t miss. That matched with a good defense behind me made for a good combination.” Elk Mound, though, couldn’t do much against Biesterveld. Dane Lew managed a game-tying RBI single in the fourth, but the game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when the new pitch-count rule took effect. Biesterveld walked two and retired one before being pulled because he reached his pitch limit. Isaiah Whitwam came on and couldn’t get out of the jam. An error set up Ethan Kjellberg’s walk-off sacrifice fly. The Mounders struck first blood, but Durand got the last laugh. The Panthers beat Mohr in the rematch to earn a share of the conference title. And when the two teams met in the Division 3 sectional semifinals, Durand rolled to a 10-0 win.

Oct. 22 / Volleyball Bloomer 3, Altoona 2

Feb. 2 / Boys hockey North 4, Memorial 3 (OT)

June 2-3 / Track and field WIAA state championships

Altoona looked like it was well on its way to a berth in the sectional after handling Bloomer fairly easily in the first two sets of a WIAA Division 2 regional final. All-Area player of the year Kristi Springer showed exactly why she would soon have such a title as she jumped out of the gymnasium and killed every ball with authority. But Bloomer never quit. The fourth-seeded Blackhawks, armed with a loaded senior class that would go on to state tournaments in basketball, softball and track and field, started to turn the match’s momentum. One big dig here. A well-placed lob shot there. An ace. You name it, the Blackhawks did it. After storming back to tie it at 2, Bloomer could do no wrong in the fifth set. A Chandler Zwiefelhofer kill ended the match and sent the Blackhawks to the sectional. This match had a little bit of everything. It showed the complete dominance of the area’s best player. It showed how valuable a deep bench is as nearly every Bloomer player saw the court and contributed. But most of all, it had the largest momentum swing you’ll see. Altoona cruised to a 25-21 first set victory and then stormed out to a big lead in the second set. Even though Bloomer lost it 20-25, the Blackhawks got some precious points back at the end and proved they belonged. “They got some confidence and knew it wasn’t over,” Bloomer coach Elizabeth Bohl said. “I feel like we just found the right combinations to make it work.” From there, they couldn’t do wrong, winning 25-16, 25-17, 15-11 in sets three, four and five. It also served as a precursor for other playoff games. Many of the same players from Bloomer and Altoona met up in the basketball and softball playoffs, as well.

With under 15 seconds remaining in overtime, North peppered a desperation shot on goal at Memorial netminder Trevor Hudecek. The puck hit off Hudecek’s pad and trickled along the boards, right to where captain Zac Stange was drifting in from the blue line. Stange skated in a step and flicked a shot from just inside the point that beat Hudecek, who was screened on the play, low to the glove side and tucked into the corner of the net. It set off a celebration 11 years in the making. Stange’s goal with 10.1 seconds left in overtime lifted the Huskies to their first win over their city rivals since Feb. 24, 2006. “To be honest, I don’t remember much of it,” Stange said. “I picked up the puck, saw a little opening bottom left corner, went for it and I got a nice redirect and it went in.” It was particularly fitting Stange was the one who tallied the goal. In his freshman season, North went 5-17 and was a bottom feeder in the Big Rivers Conference. The transformation of the program in the past three years under Ryan Parker has been dramatic. The Huskies made back-to-back sectional appearances. It was extra sweet to beat a state power they share a rink with, particularly after the Old Abes beat them in overtime a month earlier. “It’s about the players,” Parker said. “Those guys, they come in and put the time in every day. And to play against a top program like Eau Claire Memorial competitively, that’s the biggest thing and what it’s about. To get a victory tonight, that’s just icing on the cake.”

By now, it’s no secret in northwest Wisconsin that Rice Lake sprinter Kenny Bednarek reigns supreme. The mega star became a viral sensation after running a 46.19-second 400 meters at the sectional meet in Medford. Bednarek, who won the WIAA Division 2 state titles in the 400 and 200 as a sophomore while setting a state meet record in the former, broke the all-time state record with that 46.19 and became the first prep runner in state history to go under 47 seconds. When he got into the blocks for his preliminary heat of the 400, it was clear the whole stadium at the state meet in La Crosse knew who he was too. The public address announcer paused when he got to the man in Lane Five. “Ladies and gentlemen, this one is going to take a while,” he said. He proceeded to list off each bullet point of Bednarek’s resume: Defending state champion, the state meet record holder and the first Wisconsin athlete to break 47 in the 400. The capacity crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium stood on its feet to give him a standing ovation — before the race even began. It was a moment that sent chills down spines. And when the gun went off, Bednarek made it showtime. He shot out of the blocks like a cannon and made up his stagger before the first turn. The crowd, on its feet, gasped as many were watching him for the first time. “I came in just thinking to start off with a bang and try to maintain,” Bednarek said. He crossed the 200 mark in 21.5 seconds and came to the home stretch with the whole stadium buzzing. Bednarek, because of his two other races that day and three more the day following, eased up a bit to save his legs and ran a 47.74. He wound up going 46.82 in finals. But the reception he got in prelims made it clear his efforts gained attention statewide.

Oct. 20 / Boys soccer Memorial 4, Chippewa Falls 3

Feb. 6 / Boys basketball McDonell 71, Altoona 70

June 10 / Girls soccer Bay Port 3, Memorial 2 (OT)

Memorial has produced a lot of talented soccer players in the past decade. Jack Longville might be the most gifted of them all. That’s not to say he’s the best player to pull on an Old Abes jersey. He has a chance to be, though. He’s only a junior and far from the finished product. But he is capable of some special things. This game was Longville at his best. He scored all four goals to help Memorial come from behind to beat Chippewa Falls 4-3 in the WIAA Division 1 regional semifinals. Three of those goals came in the second half as the Abes dug out of a 2-1 halftime hole. “We came out flying,” Longville said. “That’s what we needed to do.” Longville — who’d finish the season with 36 goals — scored two of his goals on the counter attack, where he’s terrifying to defend and fun to watch. He has a rare ability to accelerate and can hit top speed in just a dribble or two. He’s also highly skilled, which he demonstrated in this game with a first-half goal on a free kick. It was a wild game. The Cardinals twice took the lead in the first half. The Abes rallied to take the lead in the second. Then Cole Oliver scored in the 88th minute to set up a frantic finish. It’s hard to beat a seven-goal thriller. And in this one, Longville was the star of the show. “We do lean on him,” Memorial coach David Kite said. “Its nice you can lean on him because he’s got a vast wealth of experience and you know he’s going to finish those goals. A captain’s performance.”

Monday games sometimes can be a bit sleepy. Not this one. It was great on multiple levels. On the surface, it was an entertaining game that ended in dramatic fashion when Hayden Baughman drilled the game-winning 3-pointer on the buzzer, capping a furious second-half comeback by the Macks, who were down by 16 at one point. Altoona, which played so well for most of the game, looked like it had grabbed a win that would alter the course of the Western Cloverbelt Conference race when Evan Olson made a big-time shot in the lane to put his team up two with 2.7 seconds left. But then Baughman hit a pull-up 3 from the top of the key to win it. So it was a great game at face value. But what made it stick in the memory was the context of what it might mean for the future. Baughman had shown flashes of brilliance when he helped McDonell win the WIAA Division 5 state title as a sophomore. But this was a breakout moment for a kid who could become the area’s best player next year, his senior season. He scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half and wanted the ball in the crucial moment. It was the latest sign he was becoming more and more comfortable in the spotlight and was ready for an even larger role. “It was pretty cool,” he said afterward, trying to play it cool himself. That was Baughman’s first game-winner. It may not be his last. Alex Ohde and Grayson Knowlton, his frontcourt running buddies for two wildly successful seasons, graduated. So did underrated guard Nathan Hoglund. As a senior, he’ll be the unquestioned go-to guy for McDonell. If he’s hitting from the perimeter like he did against Altoona in February — he hit five 3-pointers in the game — he could turn in a monster season. If that’s the case, consider this game the sneak peak.

Considering how good Memorial was this year, it might seem odd to single out one of the few games it lost. But this was a memorable one. Not because it was the most stylish game, filled with highlight-reel-worthy goals. But because it had the drama that only a hard-fought sectional final can provide. In many ways, this was a weird game. It featured a stiff breeze that wreaked havoc on goal kicks and punts and was full of slips — brand new soccer balls tend to be sticky — and deflections. But it was tense and a fun one to watch. It was a stylistic clash. Memorial was the more skilled and technical team. The Old Abes’ 3-5-2 formation was pitted against the Pirates’ 4-4-2 with a narrow diamond midfield. Memorial wanted to use its width and work the ball outside, back inside and then through to the forwards. Bay Port was content to play directly. Find a target forward, look for a flick-on and play off of that. “I’d say both teams were pretty even,” Memorial senior captain Sydney Gonyea said. “We worked the ball well left and right. Sometimes games are just odd. Sometimes you play evenly and it just doesn’t go your way.” Both teams came from behind. Ali Bowe scored a nice free-kick goal for the Abes. And unsung hero Jacquelyn Beaudrie scored a crucial equalizer in the second half. But ultimately Memorial suffered heartbreak in overtime. It was a tough end to a great season for the Abes. But it was a worthy sectional final. “Soccer’s a finicky sport,” Memorial coach Scott DeRusha said. “The ball bounces your way sometimes and doesn’t bounce your way other times. Today we didn’t have a whole lot of luck with the bounces. It happens. The kids played outstanding. They worked their tails off. It was a hard-fought game.”
