EASY SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS
Warmer days are here and what better way to spend them than cleaning? Although enjoying the great outdoors is probably high on many a to-do list come spring, by the end of winter, homes can do with a much-needed overhaul. Owners and renters can rely on temperate days to throw open the windows and engage in some easy spring-cleaning projects. The earlier one begins spring cleaning, the more quickly he or she will be able to head outside and bask in the warmth of spring. Spring cleaning tasks can be stretched out across several days to make the jobs more manageable. While certain spring cleaning tasks can be time-consuming, many projects can be started and completed in 30 minutes or less.
LOOK UP
Start by looking up at ceilings, molding and ceiling fans. Chances are strong that some cobwebs and dust have formed in these areas. Always begin cleaning by working from the top downward so you don’t have to clean any tables countertops or floors twice. Static-charged dusting cloths work well to catch and contain dust. Use a pillowcase on ceiling fan blades to clear the dust and keep it from cascading to the floor.

BLINDS & CURTAINS
Heavy window treatments can be removed and replaced with more gauzy fabrics. This lets in more light and warmth from the sun. Many curtains can be freshened up right in the laundry, but blinds may require a bit more effort. If the blinds can be snapped out of the brackets, place them in a tub full of vinegar, dish soap and water. Allow them to soak and then rinse with the shower nozzle. Stationary blinds can be cleaned with using an old sock over your hand dipped in a vinegar-and-water solution.

GROUT CLEANER
Grade school science lessons can be put to use as you look to remove stubborn dirt. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces a reaction that causes the formation of gassy bubbles. These bubbles can help to break up dirt that clings to crevices, such as grout between tiles. Some light scrubbing and then subsequent rinsing can rid surfaces of hard-to-remove dirt.
VACUUM VENT INTAKES
Many houses are heated by forcedair systems. The air intake vents can become clogged with dust and other debris. Vacuum these vents so that air flow is not impeded. Let the heat run for a few minutes to catch any small particles that become dislodged, and then change the furnace filter.
CLEAN OUT THE REFRIGERATOR
Now is a great time to remove any of those mystery containers growing fuzzy experiments in the back of the refrigerator. Take the food out of the refrigerator and use a food-safe cleaner to scour the shelves and inside of crisper drawers. Spring cleaning is a necessary task, but it doesn’t have to be a headache. Break up the work into manageable chunks of time, and projects won’t feel like such a hassle.

VINEGAR The cleaning aisle is full products designed for specialized cleaning. There are sprays for windows, cleansers for electronics, carpetcleaning foams, and scouring solutions for tubs and showers. Although many of these are effective, the average person can rely on just one cleaning aid for a wide variety of tasks: vinegar. Vinegar is a versatile product that can be used in everything from cooking to pickling to preserving foods to household cleaning. Vinegar is made by two distinct biological processes, offers The Vinegar Institute. Via fermentation, yeast will first change the natural sugars in the vinegarto-be material solution into alcohol. The second process involves a group of bacteria called ‘acetobacter,’ which convert the alcohol into an acid. Vinegar can be made from any fruit or natural material containing sugar. For the purpose of generalized cleaning, white vinegar is the most common and is typically made from corn.Utilizing vinegar around the house is quite simple, and there are various ways to do it.
Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to overnight and then rinse away the mineral deposits. Brighten laundry. Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle. It will help loosen stains and brighten clothing. As an added benefit, the acid will reduce static cling. Disinfect cutting boards. Give cutting boards an extra cleaning by spraying them with straight vinegar, then rinsing to clean. Clean the disposal. Make sure food residue doesn’t clog garbage disposals and lead to odor. Mix vinegar and baking soda in the drain and allow the bubbling action to remove built-up residue. Use a scrub brush for extra scouring. Get streak-free windows. Mix a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Wipe away with a microfiber cleaning cloth so no lint is left behind. Eradicate pet odor. Pour a little bit of vinegar into an empty litter box. Let stand for around 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Vinegar can also be used to blot up pet stains on the carpet. Just test color-fastness in an inconspicuous area first. Banish water stains. Fix water stains and rings on wood furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a soft cleaning cloth moving in the direction of the wood grain. Polish using a clean cloth. These were a few of the dozens of ways to rely on vinegar. Just steer clear of using it on natural stone and marble, as the acid could cause damage. For more information from The Vinegar Institute, visit versatilevinegar.org.

Safety Gear
every homeowner should have: Suitable safety gear could be the difference between a minor or major accident. Depending on your project requirements, conduct research on the types of safety gear that would be of long term use. When purchasing, opt for safety tools and equipment that are reusable and durable. DIY home repair is only safe and fun if you’re not overwhelmed by the task at hand, be sure you don’t bite off more than you can chew. For example, if you’re uncomfortable in the crawl space due to claustrophobia, leave those repairs to a professional. The same holds true with jobs that require specialized tools. Before you start a job, consider your clothing, head to toe. Don’t work in your flip-flops and shorts if it isn’t appropriate for the job, dress for safety. Sturdy clothing, work boots, and gloves will protect you.
SAFETY GLASSES & GOGGLES
Wear impact-resistant safety glasses or goggles whenever using power tools, hammers, or other striking or cutting tools. Eyewear should completely enclose your eye area and shield along the sides and top edge of the lenses.
EAR PLUGS & EAR MUFFS
If you’re using a drill, electric saw, or other type of power tool, you will need ear protection, such as foam ear plugs or headphone-style ear muffs.
DUST MASKS & RESPIRATORS
Dust and fibers can be hazardous to breathe. When working in situations where you could be exposed to dust or airborne particles, wear a dust mask. For some materials or situations you may need a certified respirator. Many varnishes, strippers, solvents,

home decor
Big Drama, Small Budget Redecorating a room or an entire house can change the entire feel of the space dramatically. But an unpredictable economy has made many consumers a little more particular when it comes to spending on home decor. Changing elements in a room does not have to be expensive. A few updated pieces or accessories can give a room an entirely new look without breaking the bank.
KNOBS & PULLS
Breathe new life into older furniture by changing the knobs, draw pulls and handles. Many times furniture comes with standard brass knobs that can look dated over time. Using sleeker, more streamlined knobs can make traditional furniture look more modern. Changing pulls from metal to wood can make a room look more earthy or country. Home improvement stores and accessory retailers stock a wide variety of handles and knobs that can transform just about any piece of furniture. And what cannot be found in a store can most likely be purchased online.
PAINT OR STAIN
Painting a room’s walls a different color can provide immediate results. But furniture can also be painted and stained. Many times older furniture is made from quality wood, not the type of composite or pressboard wood of some less expensive furniture options. That means that finishes can be stripped and replaced with new stains. Turn a dated dresser into something that looks brand new with a new stain color or a coat of paint. Think about painting or staining using foam sponges to reduce the appearance of brush lines.

the room and can provide a pick-me-up for neutral design tones. Older lamps can be given a new look by replacing lamp shades. There are many affordable options at discount stores and major retailers.

Area rugs can also transform a room with little effort. Bring in a new color scheme with a different patterned rug and carry the pattern to stairways with runners.
BARE MINIMUM
Sometimes less is more. Revamping a room can be done by subtraction as well as addition. Homeowners can explore the option of taking out a piece of furniture that may be cumbersome and blocking foot traffic. Removing knickknacks from shelves and thinning out the use of collectibles can make a room more airy and inviting. Before money is spent on changing furniture or accessories, people can look into what they can remove from the room to freshen it up. Giving a room a new look and feel can be done without breaking the bank.

Renovating an historic home Living in a historic home can be a labor of love. The history and the distinct architecture of historic homes draw buyers to such properties, but what historic homes have in regard to history they often lack in the conveniences of modern life, forcing many historic-home owners to make renovations to bring their homes into the 21st Century. 10
HomeFront
Spring 2018
Historic-home renovations differ from other types of modifications. According to the Victorian Preservation Association, renovation is getting a home back to where it may have been when originally built, while making concessions for today’s lifestyle. Preservation is the act of maintaining a structure in its current historic state, and restoration is returning a home to its original state. Unless a homeowner plans to use an outhouse or live without electricity, the majority of work done on historic properties is likely to fall into the category of a renovation. Renovating an aging structure can be fulfilling and help to make a home more functional. But make no mistake, such a renovation is a major undertaking. Before beginning, it pays to hire a professional consultant with expertise in renovating historic properties. He or she can inspect the property to determine which areas of the home are safe and which will need to be upgraded. A professional inspection can also determine if any deficiencies lie hidden in the structure. Potential concerns can be toxic paints and other substances, building code issues, rotting, and structural settling. Professionals will know what to look for and guide homeowners accordingly.
Leader- Telegram
Before any work is started, homeowners should find out if their home is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. According to the United States National Parks Service, property owners can do whatever they want with their property so long as there are no federal monies attached to the property. However, the property owner should also contact his or her state’s historic preservation office, or SHPO. The SHPO is the state agency that oversees historic preservation efforts in each state, and there may be state or local preservation laws that the owner should be aware of before renovating a historic property. Craftspeople should have experience with historic homes and a sensitivity and appreciation of renovating older properties. Homeowners should always see examples of a craftsperson’s work and verify references from each contractor before hiring anyone to work on the property. Homeowners who want to include traditional hardware and other period details in their homes may be able to find quality replicas of historic milling materials, while others may want to scour antique shops or salvage yards for era-appropriate materials. Historic renovations can be costly and have a tendency to go over budget because of unforseen damage and hazards that have to be repaired so the building is up to code. Going into the project with this in mind can help soften the blow of extra costs down the road. Historic homes can be beautiful and appeal to buyers who appreciate the one-of-a-kind nature of older properties. Renovating a historic home takes time and money, but the results are well worth the effort.

Homeowners may also want to consult with a preservation association, community restoration group or general owner-builder group. These people can refer homeowners to the craftspeople and materials that will be needed for a job. Homeowners can request to see other historic properties in the area and learn what those owners did to maintain the integrity of a home when using newer materials.

it’s about the story By Nikki Lanzer
Stuffed with heaps of clutter and a handful of ancient treasures, the attic rests in peaceful slumber just above the rafters. Every item in this rarely-visited space—cushions sunken from countless tales told on loving laps, eternal smiles plastered on porcelain faces, linen petals embroidered through dexterous fingers, and yellowed stacks of timeworn headlines that flaunt their ripened age— wears a silky skin of dust to preserve the passage of time like Pompeii ash.

Sometimes, one or two of these long-forgotten mementos hold more value than its owners realize— collectibles, vintage wares, and antiques that not only represent days gone by and memory-provoking nostalgia, but that maintain a rarity and worth that collectors seek. Several antique stores have cropped up in the Chippewa Valley over the past decades like dandelions in spring, making the area prime hunting grounds for serious vintage-seekers and casual knick knack browsers alike. One of the most popular of these local shops is The Shed, an antique store and flea market headquarters in Altoona that has been drawing in curious customers for

CONTEMPLATING
ANTIQUES? Here’s how to buy
Antique furnishings, decor, coins, and toys remain popular among consumers. Unlike the massproduced merchandise of today, antiques have history, and their endurance through decades, if not centuries, is a testament to the quality craftsmanship and materials used to create these often timeless pieces.
an entire decade. Housing a diverse variety of items from over 70 vendors, The Shed has taken its rightful spot as not only one of the largest, but perhaps one of the most sought-after antique hubs in the Chippewa Valley. “It’s a destination stop,” said owner and operator of The Shed, Ed Bohn. Walking into an antique store can be a little overwhelming if you’re not exactly sure what kinds of things to look for or which items are valuable. The good news is, as Bohn explained, that the items considered “collectibles” are constantly changing. Similarly, becoming a coveted item doesn’t just depend on changes in taste over time—it also results from the trends between different locations. “Everything is a collectible,” Bohn said. “But one hot item in the Chicago market could be completely off the radar for buyers in the Minneapolis market.”
Antiques also might be more affordable than many shoppers think. Savvy shoppers may find mid-range ‘brown furniture,’ which constitutes some antique wood pieces, more affordable than reproductions. Homeowners and apartment dwellers who want their rooms to stand apart often rely on antiques to provide a unique ambiance. Antique shopping also is a ‘green’ endeavor. Antiquing is an ecofriendly practice, putting to use items that have been recycled and reused. Antiques can be a good investment, as they generally retain their value while adding texture, contrast and personality to any room of the house. Understanding antiques can take time, but even the novice can develop an eye for pieces that strike their fancy. And thanks to the wealth of information about collectibles and antiques available online, shoppers have constant access to information about antiques at their fingertips. Shoppers may even be able
So what are the top-sellers these days in the Chippewa Valley? According to Bohn, customers are gravitating towards old-fashioned wood. From vintage ladders to six-pane windows, wooden items have reached peak popularity. Apart from that, Leinenkugel and Walter’s brand items maintain their reputation as longtime favorites and highly-desired collectibles among Wisconsin antiquers.

Despite these trends, the future of antiques holds its fair amount of uncertainty. In fact, according to Bohn, the younger generations aren’t collecting things anymore.
to comparison shop on their mobile phones. Mid-range antiques can be particularly easy to buy thanks to the available inventory. Novices may want to begin by exploring mid-range antiques. As they gain more knowledge and expertise, shoppers who covet antiques can move on to more expensive highend pieces. Some antiques are put in the same category as fine artwork and are considered just as valuable.
“Younger people don’t want old things,” Bohn said. “They want modern things, so a lot of antiques end up getting thrown away.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that collectibles will go extinct, however. Certain items, such as record players, are making a huge comeback. Young homeowners are also flocking to antique shops for finds they can repurpose into unique décor.
Another reason to browse and shop antiques is to learn about the value of similar items homeowners may already own. For those looking to downsize a collection or simply liquidate an estate, antiquing is a great way to get hands-on experience.
“Many of these people tell me they found an idea on Pinterest,” said Bohn, who, ironically, admitted to never having visited the picture-based social media site. “Someone even came in looking for a cultivator to turn into a wall decoration.” Whether an antique holds great monetary worth or not, there’s no denying its value in the history it holds and the memories it carries from one pair of owner’s hands to the next. Bohn, of course, couldn’t agree more. When asked what he believed has been the most rewarding aspect of running The Shed, he responded with no hesitation.
Rummaging through antique stores or markets can be a relaxing experience as well. And many antique enthusiasts find shopping for antiques is like a treasure hunt to find that coveted piece and unearth a bit of history in the process.
“The people,” Bohn said. “Meeting the people and hearing their stories.” Because without stories, there could hardly be antiques.

Reclaimed wood adds instant appeal to home projects
means everything
MATCH OLD-GROWTH WOOD. New regulations may prevent certain species of trees from being cut down. That means it can be challenging to match old wood in a home, particularly if you’re looking to maintain historical value and authenticity. Relying on salvaged wood items can alleviate this concern, ensuring that you can find rare woods that are no longer available brand new.
Repurposing salvaged wood is a popular trend in the home improvement industry. Not only can using salvaged wood give a home a one-of-a-kind look, but it’s a handy way to incorporate the three Rs of green living into your lifestyle: reduce, reuse and recycle. Reclaimed wood is often used in flooring, beams, wall treatments, and doors, but it also can be turned into furniture or home accent items. Reclaimed wood adds warmth and historical interest to a home’s decor that newer materials may lack. Although finding wood that can be salvaged takes time and some legwork, such efforts can quickly pay off. Many businesses are now devoted to reclaimed timber, which can help make the process of finding and using salvaged wood even easier.
SALVAGED WOOD HAS CHARACTER. It’s difficult to mimic the natural age marks and character that older wood may have. Instead of being raised on farms, wood harvested decades ago probably grew in natural environments, making the wood both durable and strong. The color and grain of salvaged wood may also be unique.
Homeowners considering reclaimed wood may be interested to learn that such wood can serve various functions aside from benefiting the planet.

LOOK AT OBJECTS IN A NEW WAY. Doors are versatile pieces of reclaimed lumber because they’re already flat and rather large. Doors can be turned into headboards, tables or benches. Staircase or porch posts can be turned into candlestick holders, and wood shutters can dress up walls and provide a place to hang artwork and other wall items. RECLAIMED WOOD CAN BE FOUND EVERYWHERE. Most people do not have to look too far to find wood they can salvage. Check salvage yards, landfills, dumpsters in front of older homes being renovated, or older, unused barns in rural settings. You also can collect driftwood or discarded shipping crates. In fact, Dell’s Architectural Antiques of Eau Claire is the perfect spot for Chippewa Valley residents to meet all of their salvage construction needs. Dell’s has been in operation for nearly two decades by owner Jeff Nelson, who continues to expand his collection of restored housewares. From bathtubs and stoves, to collectibles and fireplace frames, Dell’s has everything you need for your next home restoration project. And when it comes to reclaimed wood, there’s never a shortage of beams, flooring, doors, and more for any of your home lumber remodel plans.

Tips for
STAINING WOOD Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns may absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads
are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward.
Strip paint-caked door hardware: Buy a thrift store crock pot, fill it with water and add 2 T. of liquid laundry detergent. Drop in hinges, knobs and escutcheons. Heat on medium overnight, by morning the paint will be falling off.
Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pre-treaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time.
Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

local food
this little city
goes to market By Nikki Lanzer
When the lip-chapping, knuckle-numbing Wisconsin tundra begins to thaw, signs of life materialize over the landscape as shovels and ice scrapers return to the garage for hibernation. From maple buds to clover patches, Midwesterners can count on springtime flora to herald in the warmer, brighter season. However, most will agree that locally-grown produce resides at the top of the list of long-awaited plantlife. After months of canned and packaged cuisine, cold-climate dwellers are never ones to take fresh fruits and veggies for granted. Because of this, the start of spring in Wisconsin initiates the beginning of farmers’ market season—the part of the year where communities can share and indulge in healthy, natural products sown from the earth. Unlike most grocery stores, farmers market visitors have the ability to speak directly with the people who grow, raise, and produce the products, which ultimately promotes food quality and transparency.

Thankfully, the Chippewa Valley has a strong reputation for its farmers’ market scene—one as diverse and abundant as its vendors’ goods. A visit to the market isn’t just for checking off items on the grocery list either—a trip to one of these fresh food havens has become a social outing as well. Saturday mornings at Eau Claire’s Downtown Farmers Market perfectly demonstrate this trending activity. Swarms of college students, families, new friends and old acquaintances alike come in search of food, music, artisan wares, and an exciting hustle-bustle atmosphere. Even for those who don’t think they need anything, it’s nearly impossible to leave without a fistful of blossoms and an overflowing carton of raspberries.

A Living Legacy By Nikki Lanzer
When it comes to buying real estate, there are those who search for stateof-the-art, modern architecture and those who value the character and charm of antique dwellings—Victorian-era homes whose cosmetic flaws are overlooked by the appeal of their ancient design. There are pros and cons to both, of course, but which style a buyer chooses completely depends on which characteristics they find most crucial in the long run. The same comparison can be made in the agricultural realm. When it comes to growing produce, hybrid seeds fall on one end of the spectrum, while heirloom seeds make up their vintage counterpart. Even though arguments can be made for the endorsement of both, heirloom seeds have increasingly taken a backseat in popularity over the last century as efficiency, abundance, and uniformity have become top priorities in commercial American culture. Despite this shift in planting trend, there are many reasons to consider growing heirloom seeds or purchasing produce derived from them. So what exactly are heirlooms anyways? Passed along through multiple generations, these old-time seeds are typically pre-World War II varieties that have been preserved despite contemporary changes in growing methods. Unlike hybrids, these seeds are open-pollinated, which means they are pollinated naturally through birds, insects, wind, or humans. This yields plants that not only have greater genetic diversity, but also remain true to their specific type every year. Whether you’re an heirloom veteran or a potential first-time planter, there are several reasons why these seeds are worth a place in your garden.

Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Victorianera candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers ALLIUM to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe. Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible. Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed. That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen. To begin growing - and eating edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use.

TIME TO TAKE IT OUTSIDE The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built. Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 ‘Cost vs. Value’ report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale. When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized. The following are some popular outdoor living space features homeowners may want to consider.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS Outdoor kitchens allow homeowners to prepare more than just traditional backyard barbecue fare. A standalone charcoal grill in the backyard might get the job done, but a built-in gas grill complete with burners and surrounding granite countertop makes for a more functional outdoor entertaining space.
BARS Indoor entertaining areas often include bars, so it makes sense that homeowners want to include a place to prepare and serve beverages to their guests. Homeowners with room in their budgets may want to install wet bars where they can rinse mixers, glasses and other items needed to prepare drinks for their guests.
WARMING FEATURES Features that can keep homeowners and their guests warm after the sun sets include outdoor fireplaces and firepits. A 2016 survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects found that fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016. Such features can provide a focal point in the backyard while also extending the outdoor living season into autumn and even early winter.

PORCH SPACE Outdoor living spaces are often found in the backyard, but homeowners with bigger front yards than backyards may want to expand or open their porch spaces to create more space outside. Porch swings and rocking chairs provide a great place to relax, and porch spaces are covered, meaning homeowners can continue to enjoy time outside even when it begins to rain.

Outdoor entertaining areas are popular among homeowners, and firepits are one of the most sought-after additions to such spaces. In fact, fireplaces and firepits were the most popular outdoor design element in 2016, a trend that seems to be continuing into 2018. Various styles are available to homeowners who want to add firepits to their backyards, and choosing the right type may come down to budget, the amount of yard space available or even personal preference. Homeownership Expenses Despite the volatility experienced by many homeowners as a result of the 2008 housing market crash, homeownership continues to be considered by many an essential component of the American Dream. As stated by Prosperity Now, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization dedicated to economic mobility for all, “homeownership has long been the primary way for families to build wealth in the United States. Owning an affordable home can offer working families stability, security and a legacy to pass on to the next generation.” (retrieved from https://prosperitynow.org/ topics/housing-homeownership) In Eau Claire, nearly 60% of all households are homeowners (U.S. Census, 2015). While homeownership offers security and stability, financial complications such as low-credit score or lack of adequate savings to secure a down-payment can be a barrier for many community members who wish to purchase a home of their own. FamilyMeans, a local non-profit organization, can provide valuable one-on-one assistance in understanding personal finances.

Cathy Majkowski, FamilyMeans Financial Solutions certified credit professional in the Eau Claire office, helps homeowners and hopeful-homeowners with budgeting, credit questions and debt repayment needs. Cathy states “FamilyMeans has been helping homeowners in the greater Chippewa Valley set up spending plans and savings plans for over 20 years. An important part of owning a home that is often forgotten involves planning for maintenance and repair. The roof, furnace, and appliances aren’t going to last forever and it’s important to plan-for the inevitable replacement of these items over time. We can help you get a handle on your current expenses while planning for the long-term, future needs, too. “ Cathy went on to say, “We can help the hopeful-owner, too! Mortgage lenders refer prospective buyers frequently, to get them ready for homeownership. Some just need help preparing for mortgage payments, taxes and insurance, while others need to pay-down unsecured debt and improve their credit before applying for a loan. We can review the situation, work on budgeting and saving, or calculate a Debt Management Program to reduce credit card, medical and collection debt quickly. Our Budget and Debt Counseling appointment lays out various options to stabilize and improve an individual’s financial situation. And – the initial appointment is free! Thanks, in part, to the support of United Way!” Planning ahead for expected and unexpected homeownership expenses is one way that Chippewa Valley residents will be more financially stable. Gas firepit: Gas firepits are touted for their
convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fires. Upon being connected to a gas source, gas firepits provide fire at the click of a switch. Gas firepits are also appreciated for their safety, as there is little or no risk that flames from gas firepits will grow too large and become difficult to control.

Gas fire tables: Gas fire tables might be ideal for those homeowners whose sense of decor favors more modern looks. Gas fire tables come in a variety of shapes and sizes and, like gas firepits, there’s no need to struggle with lighting a fire or carrying firewood.

Tabletop firepits: Homeowners, condominium or apartment dwellers with limited backyard space may want to consider the convenience of tabletop firepits. Restaurants may use tabletop firepits in their outdoor seating areas because they provide warmth and ambiance without taking up much space. Tabletop firepits fueled by gas will not need to be connected to a gas source, which may appeal to consumers who want something that’s simple as well as small. Fire urns: While they might not technically qualify as firepits, fire urns provide a similar effect as firepits. Fire urns are typically gaspowered and may be an ideal choice for homeowners who are looking for a unique, aweinspiring feature for their outdoor entertaining areas.
Beat the summer heat and make sure your system is operating at peak efficiency.
