CAN’T MISS GAMES : The Mounders beat the Buffaloes twice last year, including a 21-14 decision in the playoffs. Brady Redwine scored the winner in the waning seconds in that game. : The Warriors are the defending D3 state champs, but the Cardi-

nals will have the experience edge with almost everybody back.

: The one turned out to be the Big Rivers championship game last season, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if it is again this fall. Last year, Justin Evans ran for 312 yards and five TDs, including a pair of fourth-quarter

scores to put it away for the Mustangs. But senior quarterback Keyser Helterbrand and the Raiders get Menomonie at home this time around. : Both are rebuilding, but it’s always a good atmosphere at Carson. Plus it’s Homecoming for the Old Abes.

: The Orioles have owned the Cloverbelt’s best rivalry, winning four of the last five meetings, including a 31-2 win last season at Carson Park. But the last time the teams played in Stanley, the Ramblers scored a TD in the final minute to win 37-30 in one of 2016’s wildest games.

LK MOUND — Brady Redwine is quiet and polite — a speak-when-spoken-to kind of kid. At least to those who aren’t around him everyday. But when he gets between those lines on a Friday night, he unleashes a side not seen in virtually every other interaction with him. Redwine, third in the state in both rushing yards and touchdowns a season ago with 2,598 total yards and 36 scores, goes into beast mode for a lack of a better term. He’s explosive through the gap, and several area coaches have described him as a “violent” runner. The senior is fast, quick, powerful and strong. He, along with 14 other seniors on the defending Dunn-St. Croix champions, is back this fall for Elk Mound, making the Mounders one of the more intriguing teams headed into the season. “Sometimes I do all I can do to avoid contact, but sometimes you’ve just got to be that violent runner and run through guys and make the hit instead of take the hit,” said Redwine in his usual soft tone. Redwine is quick out of the backfield and just needs a sliver of space to explode through. He’s a threat to score as he soon as the quarterback voices the cadences. “Just give him a lane,”

senior tight end Marcus Kinblom said. “He doesn’t need much. Just a split second and he can go all the way.” He rewrote record books last fall and had games of 350 and 338 yards on the ground, twice besting Elk Mound’s former state player of the year Jack Morris’ career bests

from the early 90s. This fall will feature a lot of No. 28, who is 2,677 yards away from the area’s all-time career record. And he’s got a plethora of guys back to help him as the Mounders look to carry out the momentum of last year’s run to the DSC title, their first under coach Dave Lew.

Elk Mound started last season 0-2 before finding a serious groove and ripping off nine straight wins to advance to the Division 5 quarterfinals. The Mounders scored 13 total points in the first two games. In their wins, they averaged 39. Their welcoming party was a 53-0 drubbing of Osseo-

Fairchild in Week 4. In that game, Elk Mound found its bread and butter and rushed for 378 total yards and six scores — 251 and four of those coming from Redwine. “When we felt like we were slipping and didn’t know if we were going to make the playoffs or not, we knew we had to step it

up,” senior lineman and linebacker Brett Lew said. “That Osseo-Fairchild game is kind of when it all came together.” Now there’s a feeling of familiarity as several key cogs are back to defend the crown. The Mounders are big up front and have playmakers on the perimeter defensively. And most importantly for coach Dave Lew, they know how to play with one another and handle pressures that may come with being conference champs. “They don’t worry about it,” Dave Lew said. “They know to come out and do their jobs, and they’re trying to teach our young kids to get better at technique and the little things, and everything will take care of itself on a Friday night.” Redwine carried the ball 342 times a season ago. Early in camp, Lew has been impressed with some of the other backs. That will allow Redwine a chance to stay fresh. Because come crunch time, having life in Redwine’s legs is a luxury many teams simply don’t have. “We’ve found a few guys that can really carry the ball and give Brady some breaks and make him maybe even more effective,” Lew said. “It gives us some different looks.” Actions are louder than words at Elk Mound. Don’t expect Redwine and the Mounders to be too quiet between the white lines this fall.

HIPPEWA FALLS — Despite it being high noon and the temperatures creeping past 85 degrees with nary a cloud in sight, the goosebumps on Noah Weimert’s arms were hard to miss. A year ago at this time, the center and defensive lineman from Chippewa Falls McDonell didn’t have a home on the football field. In fact, he thought his opportunity to play high school ball might be gone for good. The Macks canceled their 2017 season because of low numbers and folks being timid about playing 8-man ball. But after a grassroots effort year that included lunchtime meetings with kids in school and performing football workouts on his own — with a few other classmates too — the Macks are back. They play their first game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Northwood/Solon Springs at Dorais Field. Under first-year coach Jason Cox, a former Leader-Telegram sports reporter, Weimert and his teammates will start a new chapter of McDonell football as it begins its first season under the 8-man format. “It’s super special honestly,” Weimert said. “It really is. Honestly, just thinking about it gives me chills.” It certainly wasn’t an easy decision to cancel the 2017 season, and it was far from an overnight process

to field a team for 2018. Cox was a student teacher at the school in the spring of 2017 before taking a full-time position the next fall. He said that not fielding a football team was never a permanent thing and that the goal was always to put a squad back out there the following season, which is now. Early indications didn’t look great, and Weimert also admitted there wasn’t much hope. But then a formal meeting in the spring arrived, and a lot of guys showed up. It was clear right then and there that football would be coming back. “We definitely have some guys out here who want to play, who are hun-

gry for success, and really hungry to just play football,” Cox said. A storied program — with a 2009 trip to state to prove it — has returned to the gridiron. “A lot of people realized how sucky it is to not have a team,” Weimert said. “A lot of people wanted to get out and play again.” Now the Macks take the field with a different look. With more space on the field in the eight-man game and a former slot wide receiver as head coach, McDonell will have a spread look on offense and use its athleticism defensively. “It’s a lot more fastpaced. You have to be ready at all times, especially on defense,” senior

Eli Swoboda said. “You can have three guys go out for a pass, and you have to cover all of them. A lot to cover, but I think we have a good team to do it.” It’s a new look certainly. But for sure it looks better on the field for the Macks than sitting at home on a Friday night. As for Cox, he’ll get his first taste of being a head coach at the varsity level. A native of Palmyra, Mo., Cox was a three-sport athlete in high school before attending the University of Missouri and eventually making his way north to the Leader-Telegram. After leaving the paper to teach full time, Cox was an assistant on the boys soccer and baseball teams

last year. Despite never being a head coach before, he’s learned how to interact with kids outside the classroom and channel their focus toward a common goal on the field. “I haven’t done any football coaching, but just being able to figure out how to interact with kids on the football field as opposed to the classroom and figuring out the types of things they need to do,” Cox said. “A lot of these kids are guys I know from the classroom, and I had them in baseball too, so I kind of know what they respond to and what I need to do to get them on the right page.” It’s an open environment at McDonell. Cox is open for conversation

among his players, who are just as eager to learn in order to put the best product on the field this fall. “He’s a great guy to play for,” Swoboda said. “Everybody likes him, and he knows what he’s doing for sure. He’s not just throwing stuff at you. He listens to us, and we listen to him. A lot of respect both ways.” McDonell is finalzing its schedule, and the Macks don’t have a conference. But there’s plenty to play for this fall. These guys have the pens in their hands to etch the first sentences of the next chapter. They couldn’t be more excited. “We’re the first ones to set the tone,” Swoboda said. “Have to make sure it keeps going.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH : Helterbrand is arguably the top returning quarterback in the Big Rivers this year. He was a first-team all-conference selection after throwing for over 1,200 yards last year to go along with nine touchdowns. The dual-threat QB also ran for over 500 yards and could be poised for another standout year with an experienced team around him. : Tasked with replacing All-Northwest player of the year Justin Evans, Schultz will take the reins at running back this year. He rushed for 600 yards and 12 touchdowns in a backup role last season and should see

more carries as a primary option this fall. : The speedy sophomore will have a bigger role in the Old Abes’ offense this year. He ran for 369 yards and two TDs last season as a freshman, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. He’ll look to tap into some of his sky-high potential as he and Andrew Roberts try to fill the big shoes left by the nowgraduated Jack Brown. : The Cardinals’ defensive end has garnered Division I interest after a standout junior campaign. He made 36 tackles, recovered five fumbles and recorded three sacks. He

could be the next in line of great area D-linemen: Fellow first-team All-Northwest selections Cormac Sampson of Memorial and Cole Godbout of Hudson now play at Wisconsin and Wyoming. : The two cousins were a force to be reckoned with for the Heart O’North champion Blackhawks last year. Zach passed for 1,233 yards and ran for 855 in the ground game. He totaled 22 total offensive TDs, and also had a pick-six on defense. Caleb rushed for 1,121 yards, good for an average of over 100 per game, and scored 11 TDs.

: The versatile Rambler was a first-team All-Northwest defensive back last year, but might make an even bigger impact on offense this season. He’ll be among the team’s primary running backs, a position he gained 406 yards and scored six TDs from last year. : The dualthreat QB is the top returning offensive weapon for the defending Cloverbelt Conference champions. He threw the pigskin to the tune of 1,402 yards and 21 TDs as a junior last season, in addition to rushing for 329 yards and seven scores. : Perhaps lost a bit in the shuffle of teammate Brady Redwine’s record-setting season, Lew had an outstanding junior year of his own. The linebacker received all-state honors after making 97 tackles, one sack, one interception, and forcing one fumble. : The Buffaloes like to toss the ball around and Christopherson is a big reason for that. He threw for 2,066 yards and 18 TDs on his way to first-team all-conference recognition last year.

Menomonie must plug holes in trenches Back-to-back unbeaten championships and a 17game Big Rivers Conference winning streak. It’s put the cap on a state-record 28 straight playoff appearances, eight trips to the Division 2 finals and five championships. It’s a tradition that this year’s Menomonie football team faces a challenge to maintain. “We lost 21 seniors and that puts the pressure on the next year,” said coach Joe LaBuda, who sits two wins from 300 in a remarkable career with the Mustangs. With only two starters returning on each side of the ball, the Mustangs will have to mature quickly. “We will rely heavily on underclassmen and that’s hard to do in the Big

Rivers,” said LaBuda, entering his 30th season. There are no starters back up front and that poses a problem, he said. “We have to be patient

as coaches to develop the offensive and defensive lines.” There are strengths. No. 1 is the Menomonie winning tradition. There is

good team speed and talent in the defensive backfield. Another would be the return of quarterback Jake Ebert, who kept defenses honest a year ago by passing for 1,000 yards. “We didn’t have to have him do a lot because we had a great offensive line,” LaBuda said. Getting the job of replacing All-Northwest running back Justin Evans, who ran for nearly 2,000 yards and 31 touchdowns, is expected to be Kade Schultz. As a junior, he ran for 600 yards at an impressive average and scored 12 touchdowns in mop-up roles. “He’s a pretty good back,” LaBuda said. Another strength is the return of speedy Logan Sorenson, a leading receiver and in his third year in the defensive backfield.

Blechinger. Quarterback Buckley, halfback Marquez Clerveaux and guard Jimenez were staters at state. As a junior, Buckley developed into one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Rivers. The 6-foot-1 Buckley passed for more than 900 yards and was intercepted only twice in nearly 100 attempts. Buckley also ran for more than 500 yards while reading the option to help Rice

Lake pile up just over 4,000 rushing yards. DeAirus Clerveaux gained nearly 600 yards, but the top two rushers are gone in Brandon Sutton and battering ram Brown, who doubled as one of the team’s key blockers. “We won’t have a blocker like Brown to follow downfield, but the backfield will be quick and fast,” said Hill. Returning to the defense are end Blechinger and

back Braeden Verbsky. Blechinger, expected to be a force this season after being among the Warriors’ leading tacklers in 2017, is one of several linemen who will see duty on both sides of the ball. That group includes Jimenez and Lai. Other key returnees on defense are senior linebackers Carter Waite and Dalton Drost, both seniors, and safeties Jamion Frazier, a senior, and Bradley Hackel, a junior.

All four were backups in the state title game. Though Big Rivers competition against Division 1 and 2 schools preps Rice Lake well for the D3 playoffs, the Warriors aim to contend again for the conference title, which they last won in 2015, sharing the crown with Chippewa Falls. Over the past four seasons, the Warriors have gone 20-8 in the BRC and finished no lower than third.

After surprise run to semis, Regis hopes high A year ago, a young and inexperienced Eau Claire Regis football team went much farther than expected. The Ramblers almost made it to the Division 6 finals. But a one-point loss in the semifinals ended that chance. “I feel that loss motivated the guys coming back,” said veteran coach Bryant Brenner. “It fueled their hopes for this year and hopefully we can build off that.” Returning from that 103 team that finished 6-2 and third in the Clover-

belt Conference are six starters on offense and seven on defense. That’s a fair to middlin’ start. For any team. “We’ve got a mix of upperclassmen with experience,” said Brenner, who has guided the Ramblers to a remarkable 97-26 record entering his 11th season. “The kids had a good offseason and are excited about what lies ahead.” Among the starters returning on offense is quarterback Isaac Michels, who threw for 1,102 yards and 13 touchdowns, pretty good in a run-based, double-wing attack.

“He has really improved to become the complete quarterback,” Brenner said. “I am excited to see what he will do.” Still, he will spend most of his time handing off to wing backs Cade Osborn and Hayden Reinders, along with Tristan Root and Brooks Wahl. And also to fullback Andrew Ernstmeyer, who has moved into the backfield after starting at guard last year. Osborn rushed for 406 yards and six touchdowns as a starter and Reinders added 270 yards and four scores in an attack that can use up to a dozen

ball-carriers. The others got only a handful of touches. “We’re not super fast,” Brenner said. “The home run ball may not be there.” Receivers are top-threat Jack Nicolai, who caught 10 passes last year, and Luke Rooney. The job up front will be headed by returning starters Jack Curtis, Nick Maenner and Nathan Gorzek. Others looked to are Riley Bauer, Tommy Schmidt, Jackson Woltersdorff, Fletcher Theisen, Henry Theisen and Matt Klink.

Rails ready to just play football ALTOONA — Altoona only wants to focus on one thing this year: football. No off-field drama, just some nose-to-the-grindstone pigskin. Last year was a tumultuous experience for the Rails, to say the least. Coach Steve English was fired midway through the season, prompting several players to threaten to quit the team if he was not brought back. Eventually English was re-hired after

it was determined that then-athletic director James Oliver had operated outside his authority to fire the first-year coach, and the Rails chugged to a 2-7 record. English stepped down in the offseason, and Altoona is starting with a blank slate. Given the rollercoaster ride of a season they had last year, the Rails are OK with that. “We just want to get back to drama-free football and have fun,” said

new coach Martin Adams, who served as an assistant with the team last year. “They’ve been itching to play football, so there’s no challenge there at all.” The young Rails will get to scratch that itch soon, as they look to prove themselves in the tough Cloverbelt Conference.

CADOTT

Adams previously coached with the Chippewa Valley Predators, and is hoping to get Altoona on the right track. “Things are a little bit different, in terms of culture change. That’s what we’re looking to do here,” Adams said. The players have taken notice. “I think he’s brought up the intensity a lot, and he’s increased the discipline a lot,” senior Jayden Salsbury said.

Altoona is fairly inexperienced, but does bring back some veteran players who saw action last year. Nate McMahon returns as the team’s quarterback after starting every game as a sophomore a season ago. The Rails will get one of their toughest tests of the year right out of the gates in Week 1. They host defending conference champion Stanley-Boyd on Friday. Four of Altoona’s first five games this season are against teams which made

the playoffs last year. Six of their nine opponents made the postseason. “We’ll need to execute everything perfectly,” McMahon said of the team’s opportunity to take down some of their toughest conference foes. With plenty of underclassmen on the roster, veterans like Salsbury and McMahon will be looked to for a steady presence on the field as the younger players get their first taste of the varsity level.

senting (our conference) either deep into the playoffs, or making it all the way down to Madison and playing for the championship,” Osseo-Fairchild coach Eric Boettcher said. Some of the conference’s best talent from a season ago is gone. Stanley-Boyd’s all-state linebacker Ben Turner graduated, and Spencer/Columbus running back Hunter Luepke now plies his trade at North Dakota State. But there’s still an abundance of good players. Look no further than defensive back, at which Regis’ Cade Osborn returns after getting firstteam All-Northwest honors and Stanley-Boyd’s Ben Milas was secondteam All-Northwest. Regis also gets first-team kicker Tristan Root and secondteam lineman Andrew Ernstmeyer back, which undoubtedly helped cement them as the preseason favorite. Spencer/Columbus is far from depleted too. The Rockets return with one of the conference’s most tenacious linebackers in Carson Hildebrandt and one of its steadiest linemen in Logan Zschernitz, who is commited to Northern Illinois. Both were first team all-conference picks last year. There are plenty of playmakers to be found elsewhere too, from Osseo-Fairchild running back Caden Boettcher — who rushed for 601 yards and seven touchdowns — to Fall Creek linebacker Joey Kinderman. A number of new coaches also inhabit the conference this year. They and their teams can make their mark on the league

competing against some of the best in the area. Former Chippewa Valley Predators coach Martin Adams takes over at Altoona. Jeff Goettl takes the reins at Cadott, and John Goodman is the new head man at Fall Creek. “When you have a new person in charge, there’s the basic scheme changes, the philosophy of the team changes, and you can see that in the way the athletes play and how they communicate. We’ve got to be on top of things, making sure we’re doing a good job scouting,” Koenig said. Goodman takes over an experienced Crickets team which is looking to return to the playoffs for a second year in a row. They have five all-conference players to build around, including Kinderman and Nolan Hellegers. Cadott will need to replace Michael Emery at quarterback — he threw for over 1,000 yards last year — but has contributors back on both sides of the ball, such as honorable mention lineman CJ Spaeth. The Hornets have a somewhat favorable schedule to start the year: After their season opener against Regis, they face three of the conference’s bottom four teams from last year. Osseo-Fairchild has a couple of key pieces returning, like Boettcher and leading receiver Bret Kostka, but also a plethora of underclassmen who will be looked to for depth. They’ll be tested early, as three of their first four games are against teams that made the playoffs last year.

Dynamic quarterback LJ Schmelzer returns under center for the Orioles after garnering first-team All-Cloverbelt honors last year, and returning defensive back Ben Milas was a second-team All-Northwest pick. Noah Gillingham was a first-team all-conference specialist. Prior to last year’s loss to Stratford in the second round of the playoffs, the Orioles had a four-year streak of reaching at least the state quarterfinals. Macks’ 8-man era begins CHIPPEWA FALLS — First-year coach Jason Cox was a slot receiver back in his high school days at Palmyra High in Missouri. He probably would have liked playing in the type of offense he’ll run in his first season with a whistle at McDonell. The Macks are back in action after not having enough players to field a team in 2017. McDonell moves into 8-man football, and Cox plans on taking advantage with the dimensions and players he’s been given. “We’re going to go with the spread, which I think is a pretty good offense for the eight-man because it takes advantage of that space pretty well,” said Cox, a former LeaderTelegram sports reporter. “We have the athletes that can make that work.” Eli Swoboda, a senior running back/receiver, is a quick and shifty kid who saw time at safety two years ago in 11-man foot-

ball. He’ll figure to get the ball in space and have room to work with if all goes according to plan. “I think Eli Swoboda is going to be a guy who

He might lead us in both receiving and rushing yards.” Kendren Gullo will be the quarterback, and he’ll also fit in well in the spread thanks to his size and ability to move and create. “Tall guy, good arm and

Cox will rely on Mike Scheidler at mike linebacker to snuff out the run. “Mike Scheidler, he’s physical and we’ll look to him on defense to make plays,” Cox said. There are 17 guys on the roster, so health will be a big factor for McDonell this fall. With new pieces to the puzzle and a fresh chapter upon Macks football, there’s an element of the unknown. The Macks, who sometimes need coaches to fill in on scout teams to even out an 8-on-8 format at practice, will use some he’s athletic too,” Cox early games almost as an said. “If we can get him on experimental phase. the outside for some run“I don’t really know if pass option, that will be a we are going to be run- or big thing for us.” pass-heavy yet,” Cox said. Cloverwood a two-team battle While most conference coaches agree the Cloverwood should have some strong depth this fall, they also agree that Loyal and Abbotsford are the two horses to chase for the league crown. Loyal won the conference last

season after going 7-0 in Cloverwood games, beating Abbotsford 8-7 in the final week of the regular season in a de facto championship game. The Falcons got revenge in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs with a 17-0 win. The Greyhounds return a bulk

of talent to the gridiron this fall and will rely on defense, the same one that pitched three shutouts last season. “A hard-nosed football team who just reloads,” Thorp coach Shannon Broda said. “Very big senior class and some very good athletes return to make a run at

the conference title.” Abbotsford has been a staple in late October and early November. The Falcons have made it to the state semifinals the past two falls. They fell to eventual D6 champion Regis in 2016 before bowing out to D7 champ Bangor in 2017.

Coach Jacob Knapmiller’s team returns running back Joe Aguilera, who ran for 965 yards as a junior last year at an 11.1yards-per-carry clip. Chase Sperl was all-conference on the offensive line and returns, and Ezra Kremsreiter was an allconference tight end.

Parity reigned supreme in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference last year. Don’t expect many changes on that front this fall. One year after every team was only one game behind the team ahead of it in the standings, teams in the Dunn-St. Croix are expecting to duke it out with one another in an anybody-can-beat-anybody kind of season. Elk Mound won the conference championship last year, and is looked at as the favorite again. For good reason too, as the Mounders have one of the state’s leading rushers and top linebackers back in Brady Redwine and Brett Lew, respectively. “They’re the champs, and they’ve got their best player back. So until anybody beats them, they’re the standard,” Mondovi coach Craig Loscheider said. Redwine ran for 2,598 yards and 36 touchdowns last year, and he and his offensive line are a big reason why Elk Mound will be the team to beat until proven otherwise. Beyond the Mounders, it’s anybody’s guess who’s going to compete for the conference title. “I think it’ll be a battle every week,” Durand coach Rod Rosemeyer said. “This year more than maybe the past few years, there is more parity.

Every game we play is going to mean a little bit more.” Spring Valley took second place last year, one game behind Elk Mound. The Cardinals will have a younger team this season, which other teams will see as an opportunity to close the gap in the stand-

ings. Durand finished one game behind Spring Valley, and Mondovi was one game behind Durand. Glenwood City, following the trend, was a game back of Mondovi. The gap between the teams in the middle of the standings was minimal,

and there will be plenty of opportunities to climb upward this fall. “Top to bottom, I think our conference is pretty solid. Every week, you’ve got to show up and be ready to play,” Loscheider said.

Conference coaches point to Bloomer as the favorite to repeat for the conference championship, but Northwestern is chock full of talent and ready to make a run for the title too. “Northwestern’s got a lot of people back,” Bloomer coach John Post said. “They’re disciplined, well-coached and they always have hard-nosed kids.” Bloomer returns with some hard-nosed kids too. style of play last fall, scoring a combined 30 touchdowns on the ground between the two of them. Both earned all-conference honors on defense too. They aren’t the only two dynamic runners in the conference though. Northwestern running back Reagan Ruffi rushed for 21 touchdowns last year, and can give any defense in the conference trouble. He helped the Tigers reach the second round of the Division 4 playoffs last year. After winning the conference title, Bloomer went on to reach the Division 4 state quarterfinals in the postseason before eventually losing to state runner-up St. Croix Central. Chetek-Weyerhaeuser was the only Heart O’North team to beat Bloomer last season, but there will be plenty of fresh faces for this year’s Bulldogs team. They need to replace

some good players at the skill positions, but have reigning conference defensive player of the year Bronson Schofield to build around.

“They always have good athletes in a lot of spots. They’re consistent,” Post said of ChetekWeyerhaeuser. “They’ll be solid, for sure.”

The Bulldogs had an emotional season last year, rallying around the death of former teammate Owen Knutson. This time around, the situation is a little bit different. “This year will feel different. Last year we played for our fallen teammate, Owen Knutson. He was the one we rallied around,” Chetek-Weyerhaeuser coach Bill Knickerbocker said. “This year I feel like we have a solid group of leaders, but we will need guys to step up and stay healthy for us to be successful.” Nobody will have bigger shoes to fill in the conference than Cumberland. All-state quarterback Kobe Berghammer is now playing at UW-Oshkosh, which is surely a relief for coaches around the area given his monsterous numbers from last year: 3,201 yards passing and 46 total touchdowns. Some of Berghammer’s top targets do return — Reid Olson caught 52 passes for 820 yards

and Andrew Barnes caught 32 for 561 yards. Riley Bodsberg, who ran for 440 yards is also back. If the next quarterback in line can get them the ball, the Beavers have potential to be dangerous once again. Spooner, a playoff team a year ago, brings back second-team all-conference running back Chase Melton to spearhead its offense in a pursuit of a second straight postseason appearance. The Rails made five straight playoff appearances from 20102014 and are looking to go in consecutive seasons for the first time since then. Hayward and Ladysmith finished in sixth and seventh place in the conference, respectively, and will both be looking to improve. “We have a nice group of juniors that will fill in nicely for the group of seniors we lost last season,” Ladysmith coach Kirk Yudes said. “We aim to be competitive in the Heart O’North and to push for a playoff berth.”

Aiming to build on last year’s conference championship and run to the state quarterfinals. Cousins Zach and Caleb Ruf were both special mention All-Northwest picks last year — Zach as a quarterback, Caleb as a running back — and both return this fall. Will need to replace second-team All-Northwest defensive lineman Payton Dachel on both sides of the ball. Second-team all-conference selections Jayzson Thompson and Loren Stolt return to the line with experience. Blackhawks have made the playoffs 14 years in a row.

Ryan Smith, Tristan Wendt. Season will have a different feel than last year, when the Bulldogs were playing for fallen teammate Owen Knutson. In the difficult position of replacing five firstteam all-conference players. Heart O’North Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-Northwest linebacker Bronson Schofield returns after an outstanding junior season. Second-team allconference lineman Jacob Konvicka is also back. Plenty of opportunities for new players to step into key roles.

Matthew Tomasello who had four interceptions in his junior campaign. With a wealth of talent of experience returning for Eleva-Strum, the objective is clear. “Our goal in 2018 is to qualify for the playoffs and challenge for the top spots in the conference,” Hanson said. Independence/Gilmanton hopes to recreate the success it saw last season even after the loss of many of its key starters. The graduation of almost all of their skill players and three starting offensive lineman will have last year’s runner-up looking to new faces to contribute. “We will have a very inexperienced team this year with a lack of depth at many positions,” coach John Zilla said. The Indees will return two top targets from last year’s 9-2 squad in Sam

Jamieson, OL/DL; Easton Lindus, OL/DL; Tshaj-luag Lee, OL/DL; Hunter Clausen, OL/DE; Thomas Albrightson, OL/DE; Cameron Jacobson, WR/DB; Warick Weyer, WR/DB; Jake Lindquist, RB? Bishop returns as a WR/ DB after throwing for 437 yards and four TDs last year at QB. Robert Crowley had 25 tackles and three sacks.

Killian and Justin Samson. Killian averaged 23.8 yards per catch last season as they both hauled in four touchdowns. Samson’s impact was felt on both sides of the ball as he is also the team’s leading returning tackler (38), with Chase Cooper (34 tackles and five tackles for loss) also slated to help lead the defense. “We are hoping to be competitive but if some of our younger players come through we could surprise some teams,” Zilla said. In Augusta, Derek Boldt takes over for Andy Jarzynski, who took over as the Eau Claire North coach in the offseason. Boldt expects senior Jesse Zamora to be a workhorse for the Beavers, who went 4-5 last year and 2-4 in the conference. After a winless 2017 campaign, first-year coach Andy Nehring of Blair-Taylor has his work

cut out for him. It’s fair to say the Wildcats are in a rebuild with changes needed from the ground up. With their last trip to the playoffs being in 2013 and a conference title as distant as 2011, Nehring has put an emphasis on program values that he hopes will translate to better results on the field. “Our program measures success by creating a culture of trust, consistency and accountability,” Nehring said. “As we incorporate these values into how we practice and play, our team will see success on and off the field.” Blair-Taylor will rely on the leadership of their six seniors, specifically two-way linemen Tony Gonzalez and Mitchell Stegerwald. Gonzalez and Stegerwald saw their 2017 seasons end early as they both suffered injuries and will look to redeem themselves and the Wildcats from the bottom of the Dairyland.

MBC’s run of dominance likely to continue It’s happened relatively quietly. But the Middle Border Conference has had a representative at the state championships in each of the last four years, with three walking away as state champs. Maybe the most remarkable thing? The streak has included three different schools — Somerset in 2014, Osceola in 2015 and St. Croix Central in both 2016 and 2017. And there might just be some new players on the

block to take a crack at the conference crown this year as New Richmond and Baldwin-Woodville have a lot of key pieces returning. The MBC has been one of the most consistent leagues statewide this decade, and that label should stay put this year. “We have a very good league,” St. Croix Central coach Tony DiSalvo said. “Teams have done very well in the playoffs. ... It will be a very good league again this year.” DiSalvo’s crew looks to factor in the mix again. Even though the Panthers

lost their starting quarterback — Collin Nelson — to graduation and many key members from last season’s D4 state runnerup team, Ryan Larson is back and should be one of the top players in the league. He ran for 1,391 yards last season and 19 TDs to lead a potent rushing attack that racked up 4,214 yards and 50 TDs on the ground last season. “We want to be competitive and get better every week,” DiSalvo said. Osceola, which spent much of last season as the state’s No. 1 team in Division 4 and went undefeated

in conference play before falling to Bloomer in a Level 2 upset, lost a lot of players due to graduation. The league’s offensive player of the year is one of those guys. Brett Carlson threw for 952 yards for nine TDs and also ran for 10 more to lead a balanced attack. Nobody coming back had more than 10 carries last fall. New Richmond lost to St. Croix Central by seven, Osceola by one and then fell by three to West Salem in the playoffs. That was it for the Tigers, who were a few plays away from a much different look

than 6-3. Junior Cooper Strand had 49 carries for 322 yards and three TDs last year, and leading tackleer Christian Germain is also back for the Tigers. Baldwin-Woodville looks to factor in the race and go after its first conference title since 2010. Andrew Klopp will transition to fullback last year after excelling at linebacker last fall, while Alex Bishop will switch back to wide receiver and running back after playing quarterback last season. At that QB spot, he had 62 carries for 276 yardss and three scores.

“We have a lot of optimism in our program,” coach Dan Keefer said. “We are lacking depth but have a lot of kids that love the sport and they care about the team. If we can stay healthy and improve, we hope to content for a conference title.” Ellsworth could also make some noise as the Panthers made the playoffs last season and narrowly lost to Bloomer. The league seems to be as deep as ever, and it has proven over the years it usually has a player late in the season.

Plenty of experience back in the Lakeland Second-year head coach Chad Gago of Flambeau has one word for his team’s second opportunity after a 2-7 record last season: finish. “We took small steps forward last year,” Gago said. “We have to finish drives, finish halves and finish games.” After a lot of young faces saw plenty of meaningful snaps last season, Gago said his squad is much more experienced on both sides of the ball with 14 seniors.

Expected to lead the charge is quarterback Ethan Martin, who doubles as a basketball athlete, after he threw for 527 yards and four scores in 2017. Lining up behind Martin will be another Falcon with high hopes in running back Tyler Smith. The senior almost eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark last year with his 916 and five touchdown effort on the ground. Perhaps the most promising piece for Flambeau is its pair of returning second-team all-conference defensive lineman in Carter Verdegan and JC

Shackleton. The senior duo wreaked havoc in opposing backfields last season as Verdegan had eight tackles for loss and threeand-a-half sacks while Shackleton had six tackles for loss and racked up three sacks of his own. As long as the Falcons can stay healthy and build on the foundation set last year, Gago’s squad can be competitive in the newly realigned Lakeland Conference. Clear Lake won the South Lakeland last year and figures to be tough again. The Warriors have several players with all-

conference recognition returning to their offensive line, which bodes well for returning second team allconference running back Nick Sempf. It will be tough to knock off defending champion Grantsburg in the North Lakeland. The Pirates reached the Division 5 state semifinals last year, and are led by Badgers recruit Leo Chenal — an allstate linebacker and threat at multiple skill positions on offense. The Pirates also have starting quarterback Luke Anderson returning, and will be the team to beat in the confer-

ence until proven otherwise. There’s Division 1 talent in other places in the Lakeland than just Grantsburg too. St. Croix Falls lineman Tyler Cooper is a Minnesota recruit. Teeming with returning talent on both sides of the ball are the Lake Holcombe/Cornell Knights, who are switching from the South Lakeland to the North Lakeland this season. Second team all-conference quarterback Luke Geist, who is also an honorable mention all-conference safety, should be one of the best signal callers in

the conference after his 902 yards and five touchdowns in the air last season. Running back Wyatt Viegut led the South Lakeland in rushing last year in his 922-yard and first team all-conference junior campaign. With 20 letter winners coming back, head coach Troy Story’s team will have no shortage of experience or talent. “We are looking forward to this season,” Story said. “We have quite a few returning lettermen who are dedicated to our football program.”
