FanTaSTiC Worlds Q& a with John Flanagan author of Brotherband: The Outcasts 1. What is your new series Brotherband about?

If you like Rangers Apprentice, you'll like this. Some characters ( Erak, Svengal and so on) appear in Brotherband.

I've always enjoyed the Skandian Seawolves as characters in my books. They're loyal, straightforward and brave. And they're also wonderful boofheads who provide a lot of humour. I thought they deserved a book set in their own country - and I liked the idea of a half Araluen, half Skandian boy who wasn't quite accepted at first. 3. At the start of the book you explain a few sailing terms. Are you a keen sailor? I used to sail a Laser many years ago and I loved that. But I’ve always been interested in sailing and old fashioned navigation methods. 4. Who will this book appeal to? For a start, I think this series will appeal to all the kids who've enjoyed Ranger's Apprentice. Namely, people who like fast moving action, a lot of adventure and humour and characters that one can grow to identify with and love.

rangers apprentice 11: the lost stories John Flanagan Paperback RRP $17.95 Everyone knows the legends of the Rangers of Araluen. But no one has heard the whole story - until now. Inspired by questions and letters sent by his loyal readers, John Flanagan answers all your burning questions about the world of the Rangers. If you want to know what's gone before and what comes next for Will, Halt, Horace, Alyss, Evanlyn and Gilan, The Lost Stories is an unmissable read.

The Brotherbands are a Skandian concept, in which 16 year old boys are grouped together in bands of 9 or 10 and trained together in warfare, weaponcraft, seamanship and navigation. The central character is Hal. He's half Skandian, half Araluen. Because of this, he's a bit of an outcast. When the brotherbands are selected, he's left with the group nobody wanted - the rejects. But somehow they use their unusual skills to compete successfully with the other bands. He has also invented a new kind of sail for wolfships; (It's the one described in Book 10). But at first, the Skandians don’t accept his revolutionary new idea.

hiROShima hima NagaSaki NagaS agaSaki Saki Paul Ham Hardback RRP $ 55.00 Paul Ham, the award-winning author of Kokoda and Vietnam: The Australian War, turns his attention to the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He challenges the conventional view that dropping the bombs which killed over 100,000 people was the ‘least abhorrent choice’ available at the time. Instead, he argues that the bombing was the culmination of a strategic Allied air war on enemy civilians that began in Germany. He movingly describes the destruction through the eyes of more than eighty survivors, from 12 year olds working in war factories, to wives and children facing a day when ‘the sun fell on their heads’. A gripping human story.
