How Jacqueline Harvey Became a Children’s Author Jacqueline knew she wanted to be an author at a young age. Winning a minor writing competition as a teenager, for a melodramatic piece called Waiting…For My Life inspired her to think that maybe, sometime in the future, she might be able to write books. Unfortunately, back in the days when Jacqueline was a child, it was very rare to have an author or illustrator visit your school and there was no such thing as the Internet, so finding out how to be a published writer was a lot more difficult than it is today. It wasn’t until she was teaching at a gorgeous school in Mittagong, called Gib Gate, that she came across her first real live children’s author. Jane Carroll had written several books and to Jacqueline, she was awe inspiring. Jane came to the school for a week as writer in residence and Jacqueline remembers asking her so many questions she thought the poor woman’s ears might be in danger of falling off! But it was at that point Jacqueline wondered, if with the right amount of persistence and perseverance perhaps one day she could be published too. So she wrote poems and stories and plays for her classes. Some, like The Adventures of Texas Jack and Tootle Loo Tutie were performed to great acclaim. It wasn’t until she took some time out from full time work and moved to the idyllic surrounds of Byron Bay that Jacqueline really put her head down and tried to write something that was good enough to be published. Her husband Ian asked her if she was just going to talk about being a writer for the rest of her life or was she actually going to give it a proper go. It was a valid question and Jacqueline decided that she didn’t want to die wondering. Since then, Jacqueline has published eight novels for young readers. Her first picture book, The Sound of the Sea , was awarded Honour Book in the 2006 CBCA Awards. She is currently working on Alice-Miranda’s next adventure and a new series called Clementine Rose of which book one which will be published in September.

A short Q&A with Graeme Base Q. W hat’s the book you’ve read most often? A. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien I first read it when I was about 12 (decades before the films came out) and it blew me away. I have probably read it ten times since.

Q. D o your ever cheat and read the end of the book first? A. Never! Who would do such a thing?! That’d be like eating icecream before pizza.

Q. Do you skim the boring bits or read every word? A. Nope. I read everything - and I mean everything. I just about proof-read the books I get into, noting punctuation choices, the frequency of particular words, even the style of sentence construction (I got into grammar as a kid!) As a result I am an incredibly slow reader.

Q. Did you like to read as a child? A. I wasn’t a really great reader. I was more into music. It was not until I found ‘The Lord of the Rings’ that I really understood how engrossing and wonderful reading could be.

Q. Estimate the number of books you own. A. Thousands.

Where’s the strangest place you have ever read? A. In a hot air balloon. I was reading a map to try and figure out what part of Melbourne we were flying over.

Q. W hat author or illustrator has most influenced you? How have they done so? A.
